This was helpful. I come from streetbikes, where the rear brake is only roughly 20% of your stopping power. So dirt riding is different in that aspect

yzfBrandon front brakes the same way just about for dirtbikes. that's to control speed for sharper cornering

Hey, I was a fan of this guy back in the 70s. He was noted holeshot specialist.

I run my rear brake high as I mean higher than my foot peg this helps me not have to have my knee move forward when standing using the rear brake. Plus when your in the pro expert class your standing a lot more than the c class just cause of speed and how rough the track gets. It is weird at first but once you get used to it you will never go back. Gary bailey is the instructor who made me run my brake like this. Gary semics and Gary bailey are definitely top instructors in country . Take some classes and learn proper technic and you will get faster. I promise you this.

Yeah I road raced and we basically use the front brake and never even use the rear brake at all, zero, motocross when I first went to a pro race I was blown away by the top fast guys and there brake talent and skill they were so much finesse of the brakes I was in awe...because I'm good and these guys were from another planet they brake technique was so controlled and a thing of beauty.I was just standing there grinning from ear to ear, laughing nobody new why I was so excited.

Ive always liked my brake pedal the way Gary says it should be. But I race woods and many of those guys(Old school A and AA) are telling me to adjust it way lower like the guy he says is doing it wrong.
They say in woods you don't have time to be moving foot back n forth so it should be covering the pedal all the time.
I tried it because I felt with my leg hovering off peg it was causing cramps.
The problem I have is I can't brake standing that way. I like to shift weighty back standing and brake that way.
    I've found a happy medium.
But I wonder what's correct for woods racers.

Yeah, I know what you mean, as I did a 3 hour GNCC a while back. My upper right leg got really tired from holding it up above the brake so long. It this case, it would be better to lower it.

I thought ,when cornering you are putting weight on outside peg

of course you are. your braking before apex when its most needed. in transition. get braking done, weight the peg when you pivot and on the gas

That's more for when you begin to exit the corner. Not so much while you are still braking.

maybe the super low ones are people that do wheelies and i know for a fact its alot easier to use the brake when its low

Actually harder to cover the rear brake during wheelies if its adjusted low

Man what da heck I mention the word dirt bike in a comment next thing I know I m getting motocross videos again, hear a reason to go to a school and learn how to ride,u mite think u have all your whole act together when it comes to riding or racing then u go to a track or a surface that is totally out of ur norm,I was lucky when I was riding I used to hunt around for different place to ride and there for i accidentally could ride on any surface, when I moved to Florida, family,I found out about a sand track and went out there they were cool enuf to loan me a 500 of all things, most surprising was the fact that they were surprised I could ride the deep sand at all,I didn't have the heart to tell them, that other than when its wet and goggles get junked I love riding in the sand, versus hard pack, just like the freedom of it and the rougher it get the more I enjoy it,timing the big whoops and really having to work the bike.thanks Gary, its a shame I didn't have this internet stuff back when I got into racing,I got started racing,at like age 27 and got pretty far just on talent,it would have been cool to get some real MX knowledge to realize my dream, just naturally talent I get the holeshot every time I race, being a little to old to be factory sponsered I changed my goals to just reaching the pros and qualifying for a SX or National it would have been good to get to know u...thanks again and keep preaching the gospel, today bikes are so mean and ready,if u think u know it all your wrong open your mind and learn its more fun I learned the hard way,hey but at least I learned some of my friends were stubborn.I won't go there, thanks
