  • Registratie van de NTR ZaterdagMatinee van 12 februari 2022 vanuit het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.
    Radio Filharmonisch Orkest
    Karina Canellakis, dirigent
    Barbara Hannigan, sopraan
    Wagner - Ouverture Parsifal
Abrahamsen - Let me tell you
    Sibelius - Lemminkäinen-suite

The Abrahamsen is a modern masterpiece. If you are averse to modern music and hear the usual strange sounds at the beginning don't be put off. Stick with it. Profoundly moving. Bravo, everyone - in particular Barbara Hannigan.

97% of contemporary works die a quick death and the Abrahamsen piece falls in that category. No amount of promotion will save it. Compare that to (for example) Elgar's first symphony, which received more than one hundred performances in the first year alone. Or, compare it to an opera by Puccini (La Boheme) which has been performed over 65,000 times since it was written.

What on Earth does Abrahamsen, who was born in 1952, have to do with Elgar??? Or Puccini??? Those are 3 different musical genres, do you also make comparisons between ragtime and bossa nova???
By the way, since when is the value of a classical music work a function of its popularity? I assume you would then save Elgar and Puccini from the fire before Schumann???
Nothing wrong with Elgar, but... what you make of it... Jesus Christ.
Please write me a short book comparing this Abrahamsen piece with all of classical music. You can start with Guillaume de Machaut. Also don't forget Gluck, Sinding and Halffter. I promise you I will read it, and have fun. I will even call my wife for her to see it too.
      I swear, these conservative types...

@@nandoflorestan The REAL test of any work of art is its longevity. I only pointed out that this Abrahamsen piece was trash and that the passage of time will prove me right. How many times have we heard Aida as compared to that opera by Adams, Nixon in China? As the famous British author said, if a book isn't worth reading twice, it's not worth reading once. If it doesn't survive public opinion, it's because it's not good - the public knows much more than any critic.

@@violinhunter2Well, I beg to differ - I do feel like this work will have many many many more performances. Comparing it to La Bohème or the Elgar symphony makes complete abstraction of the immense difficulty of the solo soprano part, as well as its aspect of being tailored to Barbara Hannigan’s qualities and artistry. For the concert organisers who want to organise a performance of this work, they have to essentially choose to go with Barbara Hannigan, who’s agenda and fee is of course difficult to manage. With time, more sopranos will have this work in their repertoire (there are already sopranos other than Hannigan who are performing this piece).
Also, many many many works of the classical canon by Schubert Schumann, Franck, (in reality, you can pick and choose any big composer) were completely forgotten after their creation, and it took a long time for them to be taken up again. So I have to say that the argument of immediate popularity is easily countered. :P
But! Even if I love Hannigan and this work - I don’t find her at her best in this performance, compared to other live versions and the recording - which is perfectly fine, and might explain your reaction to the work?
