Montipora Coral Care Tips

  • Montipora are arguably the second most popular small polyp stony coral behind Acropora. This is for good reason. Montipora possess both diverse color variations as well as a multitude of growth forms. The care tips we will go over in this video are intended to provide a baseline that will give hobbyists the best chance for success. They may be overkill for the hardier species of Montipora while the more delicate specimens may require additional TLC to keep them healthy.

For those of you who are new to reef keeping or intermediate. You should listen to this video over and over. There is a TON of great info in this video on corals in general. The parameters that Than gives here are almost perfect in my experience. One of the most important things to remember, don't panic and over feed corals. Your corals will live a long time and not starve. It's better to be careful when feeding than to feed too much. Fantastic video Than!

I might have missed it but I think placement is super important. A beginner is likely to plop one down at the top of their reef, a big mistake ime. Nearly on the substrate is best to let them grow out without shading out huge portions of a reef.

My favorite is Montipora Confusa. It grows plates with digi-like branches.
The rainbow Monti is also pretty sweet! Mine took-off slow, and then started spreading and displaying all sorts of colorful undertones.
Montis have been tough for me. I went on a two week vacation and had an ATO issue. My salinity dropped to 1.020. My friend corrected it by dumping a bunch of salt into my tank. My plating monti was bleached. I thought it had died. When I was about to toss it weeks later; I noticed color coming back. It probably took 4-5 months to color up; but it came back.

Incredible Than! The imagery in this is mindblowing and the info will be SUPER helpful. Starting out I went straight to acros (and a couple of other SPS - a Stylocoenellia (sic?) and a pachyseris but I have always loved Montis - I think as I just have my QT tank and haven't done my build that I feel like they may grow too much and I can always get the types I want.
Generally I think Montis are way underrated and just as good as acros - and in many ways better - they often grow faster and the forms seem to be more diverse.

I beat the Nudibracch by stocking with all kinds of wrasses that i liked, fit my tank and my retailer had in stock. The Montis got very damaged and some nearly died, but after a around 3 weeks the wrasses started doing thier job and the montis recoverd. But i had to frag all the Montis to make them look good again, i will never every set up a tank again without some wrasses and other pest-eating fish.
having them before pests appear is better

May be just by chance, but I had a fight with montipora eating nudibranqs for months, and one day that I introduced lysmatas seticaudatas for the aiptasias, the nudibranqs disappeared together with the aiptasias. Are these shrimps eating also nudibranqs? I never heard about it, but to me it seems like this. Great video as always, by the way!

I personally love the encrusting and plating varieties, but honestly they're all very nice. I'm curious though, what fish would you say would be most beneficial to the encrusting varieties in a fluval 13.5g evo? I just picked one up and my intent is to make it a montipora dominant system, but wasn't really planning on adding fish if possible. Especially in such a small environment. Definitely not looking at clowns

I had an issue with the montipora nudibranchs when I added some “safe coral”. They were destroying my monti.
I successfully killed them all with a high powered laser. I had to wait up at night over the course of 2-3 weeks watching for new spots that were being eaten.
However, when I did find them it was EASY to turn that laser on and literally make them explode.
After only a few nights of checking and killing them I haven’t had any issues again. That was about 2-3 months ago. I did buy a specific laser and would gladly show which one I use. I also have a video on my channel of using them on Asternia starfish.
Hope this helps some of you!
