This is my 3rd year reefing, and I have to say BRS have helped me so much in cutting out the grey areas in this hobby and focus on what helps...love you guys 😉👊
Thank you so much for running this series. I am currently in the process of cycling my first saltwater tank, and these videos have made my experience much smoother than had I not discovered you.
Your vids have helped me so much! Getting about a thousand dollars worth of stuff from you tomorrow and my Red Sea Max S 400 Friday. Going to be an exciting weekend! (Ignore the people on here nit-picking like they’ve never made a mistake. Ugh).
Love your videos, so informative, not just a basic explanation either they're always in depth, I'm just starting up my first marine tank, I have kept discus before and bred them so I know a bit about water conditions and keeping livestock. Your videos are helping me so much learning new things and knowing what I need. Thanks guys!!
Best in the series so far. I've found understanding the livestock options the hardest part of the hobby. The range is so large and the books seem disconnected to the current state of the hobby. I suspect because it changes so quickly. Trouble is that on any days the LFS or even online stores has such a small subset of what is currently the stock rotating through the industry. You ask about other options and get given a heap of names that don't mean anything to you (or are confusing - so what type of montipora is that "Superman"?). So you don't know if you should buy that coral in front of you or wait and see what else might show up in the next 6 months... It's great to get a such a good overview which goes into some detail too. This vid saved many hours of hanging out in the LFS interrogating busy staff. Can I suggest a BRS cheat sheet on each of the coral types. Especially listing the commonly available named clones currently trendy would be fantastic. Now if you blokes would just ship to Oz. And talking of Oz I'd like to plug our local Cairns Marine. Maybe your LFS in the US might like some sustainably caught Australian corals. Thanks again for the vid.
Another nice video, Ryan! Was glad to see UC included in the list of suppliers. I use them often. You mentioned it being run by Tony and Joe Caparatta, but you didn't mention Scott Fellman. A lengthy conversation with Scott is what sold me on UC, and their quality items made them #1 in my go-to list. I love the low S&H, too! Just wanted to give Scott his props and thank you guys for another interesting and informative video!!!
+BulkReefSupplyCom I wasn't aware of that... thanks for the update! UC has always delivered great corals, and the one occasion they sent a wrong coral resulted in me getting to keep the coral... and getting TWO of the corals I had originally ordered! Amazing customer service and they certainly aim to please!!! Your videos totally rock, and I appreciate the work you put into them. The information they offer is invaluable to folks trying to make sense of the overwhelming amount of data on the internet. Keep up the good work!!!
Just bought some frags from Saltwater Empire in Bloomington, MN. This is where brs shops locally, WHAT AN AMAZING STORE!!! They have one of the biggest Ricordeas i have ever seen in there main frag tank. also have a great selection of acans.
I've gotten quite a few frags from Matt at Austin Aqua Farms. His shop is about five minutes from my house. His stuff is awesome. What you see in the pictures is literally what he has. True WYSIWYG.
I understand not making a big deal of this for fear of scaring off new reefers. But due to the risk I'm always surprised when no one mentions that zoanthids and palys can contain one of the deadliest toxins in nature. It is impossible to know which do and don't without being a marine biologist with a speciality in those corals. Not trying to knock BRS at all. Just surprised it wasn't mentioned. I love BRS and I'm glad I have the luck that I live only a mile away. (*cough* Hire me as an IT guy *cough*) The main reason I point it out is simply due to trying to keep others safe. Just in the local club here in the twin cities. One of the members almost went blind in one eye last year because he forgot to wash his hands after moving some zoas around and rubbed his eye. It can be scary stuff, these animals evolved to protect themselves. Wear gloves and wash your hands. Now to stop being the harbinger of doom. Another great video. I have a few more to catch up on after being on vacation.
This was such a great idea for a series. Really entertaining and amazing production quality. And the weekly topics and build were so well planned out! Ryan could easily hold a job as a proper tv show host at this point. The level of improvement in public speaking skills, body language, and camera shyness from the earlier videos on this channel is staggering.
I've been in this hobby for a year now and recently discovered this channel. More than anything, I appreciate the efficiency of these videos. Plain language, well written, information dense. I binge watch BRSTV like it's Netflix. Maybe I'll get myself a tub of chocolate ice cream. In fact no. It’s not like I haven’t spent the past days, weeks, months planning a new rig. I have I have and it’s all coming to a head right now. This is Atlanta. People here feel so marginalized they amass on the freeway and I can’t bring myself to care about any of it. A rimless low-iron aquarium sits on my table, you see. Still in the stretch-wrap. Packing peanuts on the carpet. So I say no. Not chocolate. Rather something with peanut butter cups mixed in. I have a diamond hole saw and I am not afraid to use it. Thank you, for that BRS.
I noticed the pulsing only occurs when it’s obvious that there is t much ware movement in the immediate area. Leading me to believe that the pulsing is the Xenia creating its own water movement.
Fantastic vid, made this Englishman very Happy! Packed full of informative info, plus answered all the questions I have in mind, beats going through pages of forums on google! Especially when you are just starting out on the quest of reef keeping. Big up BRS.
I lived in Tampa for a few years and they have some decent local shops. However after recently moving closer to the Orlando area I took a drive over to WWC and can honestly say they are as awesome as advertised. I have not purchased any corals online I prefer to actually see what I am getting with my own two eyes but after visiting WWC in person I would not hesitate at all from buying something from them online. If you are making a trip to Orlando you should definitely check them out and hey Reef-a-Poolza is next month so.
I'm starting a 35 gallon in a few weeks I just bought some dry rock from you guys should be here by Friday I love this channel you cover everything and make it really easyyy
Dear Ryan, days ago I came across a Craigslist post about a guy who was selling high end coral frags at affordable prices in his apartment. He doesn't has an aquaria store. Yesterday I went to visit him and I bought a few nice frags including one called "Armor of God" (Palythoa). The guy just fragged the corals at that moment but he didn't mount them on plugs, so they were swimming lose in the container (I guess that's why they were cheaper). Today I'm reading that Palythoa coral is poisonous. He fragged his Palythoa colony with a razor blade, no glasses and no gloves for protection. If that guy is an experienced reefer (he got 5 mature reef aquariums) I'm wondering why he didn't take any precaution... If Palythoa coral is severely toxic why nothing happened to us?? Arriving home I mounted all the frag on plugs with glue. I was handling the frags bare hand. Now I'm seriously concerned after reading this. What do you think about it?? Thank you.
Been watching all these videos to make sure that I understand what I am really getting into before I start the hobby, I love the ocean and want a little piece of it in my house. I had a few questions though; how do you isolate the corrals, polyps, zoas, etc.? How do you know which ones need to be isolated? Also how do you frag them? Do you all have a more in depth video about corals and anything else I have asked?
lol. world wide coral has a huge online "presents".. either they are giving lots of gifts or they ment presence :) great video BRS. This whole series has been great. sorry I poked fun at a simple typo.. I "REEFER" people to your videos frequently. please keep up the 1st class work.
+Jeremy Wedderman I caught it as well. I did chuckle. Easy to happen I guess. Typo aside, these guys do great work, Ryan does excellent in front of the camera, they give great advice, and the store has never once treated me wrong. +BulkReefSupplyCom is fantastic.
I can recommend World Wide Corals if you have very, VERY deep pockets. Make sure that you dip or quarantine well. I got a Paletta blue stag from them with a big ol' acro eating flatworm on it.
+neuwave1 I didn't report it to them. I figured with an aefw that big, they would know about it already (there were no eggs on the frag or the plug). Listen, I don't want to come off as a WWC hater. I just got another delivery this week from them, and I will order plenty more.
It would be great if you define low, medium high intensity lighting in terms of Par levels....because I'm not sure how much is low, medium or high intense lighting
The reason pulsing xenias pulse is because they are normally found in low flow environments in the wild, so they pulse to create more flow around them. Therefore they may stop pulsing because they have enough flow.
I was told by a marine biologist that the pulsing on a xenia was down to a mutation that allows them to thrive in low flow, the pulsing acts as artificial flow.
Regarding online vendors, I’ve been surprised at how expensive fish and coral seem to be online compared to local stores. I’d expect local stores to cost more given both the supplier and the store need to profit, plus I’d pay a premium to see it in store and get to ask questions. Any thoughts on why this is? And I’m even talking about before shipping.
after accidentally finding BRS I'm now starting my own reef tank and totally hooked , fantastic videos (30 years as a freshwater tropical planted enthusiast ) . anyone know of a good place to order softy's in the UK , not too impressed with my LFS ( Maidenhead aquatics )
Any chance you can do an update video separate to this series? I see you have a number off fish that weren't introduced with the original fire fish. It'd also be interested in how your finding any detritus (or lack off) on the marinepure blocks in the sump as I'm looking at these as an option
I need advice. I'm eventually getting a led light but for now I'm using the aqueon t8 light on a 20 gallon long. It's about 11.5 inches from the light source to the base of the tank. I was wondering if I can put corals like the ones from the video like Pom Pom or zoos'. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I have two mushrooms a Ricordea florida and a Rhodactis both isolate on a huge rock and they have grown too about 4x the size in 2 months but wont split! Will they split on there own or should I make them split?? Awesome video by the way cant wait for LPS! My favorite type of corals, soft corals are always a nice touch in a mixed reef though I also buy most of my corals from Tidal Gardens or the LFS!
+BulkReefSupplyCom I completely understand, I am just one person too and recording and editing videos is quite a lot of work. One tip that might have worked for you and maybe for other videos is to first do all of the corals from one company and then from another etc so that you don't mix them. It looked kind of better in my opinion to mix the order up (as to not give any preference to any company) but it is definitely more work. Keep it up guys, I always learn something new from you.
my green toadstool was just placed in my tank yesterday (store bought) and has yet to open up. I also bought a green Star Polyp which is fully open and happy. Is this behaviour normal for a toadstool? is it stressed? Also, how does the BRS team handel green star poly growth? I love the coral but i dont want it to take up all my space. Thank BRS . You guys live rock
As a NPS reefer, all of the sites that you mentioned have very little of the corals (2 - 3 frags, if any with more emphasis on the later) that I am interested in. I primarily shop at my LFS, however I will also use LiveAquaria's Diver's Den for NPS corals and SaltCritters.com for most anything else.
My boyfriend and I have been running our reef tank for over a month. There is live rock, live sand, clean up crew, and 3 pajama cardinals. We have a 40 gallon long (about 3 ft long and 18 inches high) No coral is in the tank yet but we already have a 75 Fowlr tank so this 40 we want as a reef. Totally a beginner reefer and have a lot of questions. We have one kessil A150 blue. I'm wondering if we can have a few soft corals with just one kessil or do you really need 2? If so, what great beginning coral would be good to put in a 40g long with one kessil light and moderate flow. If we need we can get another kessil next year as $400 for another kessil needs to wait. Let me know what we can put in now with what we have
Thank you BulkReefSupply! We got our first coral order, a Blue Dot Mushroom and another fish a royal gramma:) Getting the shipment in about an hour! We got them from BlueZoo Aquatics! I will let you know how they do
I've always wanted to venture into the saltwater/reef hobby, but when I go to the local saltwater shops I come out with the impression it costs hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. All I want is a small tank set up that I can set on my home office desk, so that I can enjoy and relax while viewing the marine life. Is this a possibility? Maybe 1 clownfish and a live rock?
Hey John, I've been collecting stuff for my reef aquarium since November 2016. Yes it's expensive but there's no rush. There is so much to investigate and information to absorb and I've been having a blast learning everything about this hobby. So if you enjoy the adventure getting there before you know it you will have everything you need to start out just the way you envisioned. The last of all my stuff has arrived today and I'm extremely excited to begin building my reef. BRS TV has become my go to if I need to brush up on anything reefing. Anticipating getting fish in my tank the beginning of May. :D
What Kind of filtration should I use if I'm on a budget and I want too start up a 30 Gallon reef tank with soft corals and maybe live rock? I also have a 30" fluorescent light and I was wondering if that would be bright enough to sustain them? If you can help me out I'd really appreciate it. It's my first saltwater tank
what is the ideal temperature for salt water tank that house live coral and fish? at the moment i have a couple of hammer heads, hairy mushroom and a zoa, all frags. I keep my temp at a steady 81 deg. is that too high? I'm new to the hobby and trying to learn the correct ways to maintain a reef tank/fish.. Thank you
I am not sure I understand what is meant by isolating a coral to an "island". Does that mean mount it on a small rock away from the main aquascape or just take the plug its attached to and stick it in the sand?
Hi BRS Team. Should a softy+fish tank have the same parameters as you mentioned in another video: Ca=420ppm KH=8.5dKH and Mg=1300ppm? I understand from this video that you shouldn’t need to dose Ca/KH for the softies is that correct? Last one: would you recommend Red Sea Salt or Coral Pro Salt for a softy+fish tank? Thanks in advance, keep up the great work
Thank you very much for the answer, always very useful! I am now only a couple of weeks away from getting my first salt water fish, just need to make sure the water is right. Thanks
I've had two GSP's and both have died. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have a 25g with two small damsels, and a Kessil A80 LED overhang light. I've dried to keep them in lower white light, and the LFS can't find anything wrong with my levels when I have taken in samples. Any ideas? I have lots of coralline algae, amphipods, hermits, an emerald crab and everyone is doing great, I just can't get a coral to survive. I'm at a loss.
Can you guys talk about fragging corals in a later week? I am really interested in fragging my corals because they are all starting to grow very large. Unfortunately, I have always been afraid of fragging because I don't quite understand how to do it with 100% certainty that my coral is going to survive.
As a noob (about 8 months in now) I’ve had limited success with softies yet my lps and sps were doing fine (until my skeletor moray snapped most off) couldn’t work it out, then realised my nitrates were too low due to nopox
If they have what u want, u can't beat unique corals, $19 shipping cross country, nobody even comes close, even Florida to North Carolina is $35-$50, which is crazy, WWC is great to buy on a visit but their website barely has things in it, they do allot of eBay sales, vivid aquarium is nice but $50 shipping is high!!
+BulkReefSupplyCom Thanks I guess if I add a few LPS like fragspawn and acans brain and a monti cap or 2 I may need to add calcium and alkalinity.. but for most part will be soft dominated tank
This is my 3rd year reefing, and I have to say BRS have helped me so much in cutting out the grey areas in this hobby and focus on what helps...love you guys 😉👊
10:14 the way that crab looked at the fish😂
It was that "MEERHH... GET OUT OF HERE"
Thank you so much for running this series. I am currently in the process of cycling my first saltwater tank, and these videos have made my experience much smoother than had I not discovered you.
Great info I don't know what I would do without you all
I've always wanted corals, but never quite knew even where to begin. This series is really educational - thanks!
***** I bought a fire & ice zoanthid this afternoon, and one of the polyps is open already :)
You forgot to mention that World Wide Corals runs "Live Sale" events where they offer $5 dollar frags and amazing deals in general! Great video guys!
+AcuaTV Emanuel! Soy sub!
+CygniTo Gracias! ;)
These videos have just gotten better and better. Thanks guys keep it up! Cant wait to start a tank from everything I have learned through these.
I've had very good success with Vivid Aquariums. Nice folks, customer service is excellent, packaging top notch.
checkout our youtube channel for our New ClownFish Documentary!
I waited ages for this episode. Well worth it!
Your vids have helped me so much! Getting about a thousand dollars worth of stuff from you tomorrow and my Red Sea Max S 400 Friday. Going to be an exciting weekend! (Ignore the people on here nit-picking like they’ve never made a mistake. Ugh).
Wow. What a great video. I didn't realise there were so many soft corals. Can't wait for the next video about lps corals.
Just bought some frags from Saltwater Empire in Bloomington, MN.
This is where brs shops locally, WHAT AN AMAZING STORE!!!
They have one of the biggest Ricordeas i have ever seen in there main frag tank. also have a great selection of acans.
favorite episode yet
I've gotten quite a few frags from Matt at Austin Aqua Farms. His shop is about five minutes from my house. His stuff is awesome. What you see in the pictures is literally what he has. True WYSIWYG.
Best video I've seen on soft corals! Thanks!
(*cough* Hire me as an IT guy *cough*)
The main reason I point it out is simply due to trying to keep others safe.
+BulkReefSupplyCom. You skipped the most important line about hiring me ;-)
This was such a great idea for a series.
Shots fired at Live Aquaria!!!!
+Brett Abbott I spend truckloads of money at LiveAquaria/DiversDen. Still a great company, even after the acquisition.
I don't think I understand your message. Do you recommend Live Aquaria for buying corals?? I'm very new into the hobby. Thank you.
George Arias f**k no ! They are the worst!
I noticed the pulsing only occurs when it’s obvious that there is t much ware movement in the immediate area. Leading me to believe that the pulsing is the Xenia creating its own water movement.
Most of my stock came from Than at Tidal Gardens, Good healthy stock at a reasonable price with good service!!!!
I personally have been extremely happy with ordering from Cherry Corals and Unique Corals.
Fantastic vid, made this Englishman very Happy! Packed full of informative info, plus answered all the questions I have in mind, beats going through pages of forums on google! Especially when you are just starting out on the quest of reef keeping. Big up BRS.

100 percent on unique corals I've order from many online stores and unique was clearly the best everything beautiful and healthy great shipping
very good video lot to learn my dive in Maldive i saw many beautiful soft corals

I'm hoping to mate a goby with a pistol just to see if I can make it happen how many inches of sand do I need I know they burrow for shelter
@@richarddon328 4 inches I would say
the crabs reaction to the wrasse at 10:16 was so funny. i was lol

Great Video Ryan. Never shopped at Austin, but the other 2 have received a lot of my Money!!!
fantastic thanks. helped me ID some of my stuff being very new to the hobby
this was very informative, Thanks BRS
Finally the top I was waiting for.
love it
+BulkReefSupplyCom thank you
I'm looking forward to Sps video ☺
Been watching all these videos to make sure that I understand what I am really getting into before I start the hobby, I love the ocean and want a little piece of it in my house. I had a few questions though; how do you isolate the corrals, polyps, zoas, etc.? How do you know which ones need to be isolated? Also how do you frag them? Do you all have a more in depth video about corals and anything else I have asked?
I decided to get my water tested for the first time in years and my magnesium was a tad low. Not bad for just the occasional water change
Very interesting. Well done video!
cant wait for next week guys
I did my own experiment on Xenia and if you increase the flow by a lot the stop pulsing and when you limit the flow the pulsing comes back.
this was exactly what i needed thankyou 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great video guys!
thank you for responding so quick.
AHAHAAH Emerald Crab at 10:13 "MY FOOD"!!
LMAAAAAO 😂
someone needs to dub all these marine animals 😂
Should being getting a fair sized order from tidal gardens tomorrow. I'm getting a combo of LPS, mushrooms and zoas.
lol. world wide coral has a huge online "presents".. either they are giving lots of gifts or they ment presence :) great video BRS. This whole series has been great. sorry I poked fun at a simple typo.. I "REEFER" people to your videos frequently. please keep up the 1st class work.

+rewris I whole heartedly agree. They are my first stop for anything aquarium related. Their reef calculators are a God send!
+BulkReefSupplyCom hey at least we are all paying attention :)
this is so informative and the coral are extremely beautiful. .. subscribed
Very nice video Ryan! PLEASE do one just like it on SPS too! :D
Great episode.
Manhattan aquariums is one of my personal favorite stores. Amazing corals.
I can recommend World Wide Corals if you have very, VERY deep pockets. Make sure that you dip or quarantine well. I got a Paletta blue stag from them with a big ol' acro eating flatworm on it.
Agreed. Except when there are bite marks on the acro underneath the flatworm. :)
+Rob Bradley What did WWC say when you contacted them about the flatworm?
+neuwave1 I didn't report it to them. I figured with an aefw that big, they would know about it already (there were no eggs on the frag or the plug). Listen, I don't want to come off as a WWC hater. I just got another delivery this week from them, and I will order plenty more.
Good job wit those zoa names at the end. I just call them Zoas lol... All the other names I forget after I leave the LFS...
soft corals look so cool
I agree, honestly better than sps sometimes
10:12 lol!! love that crab
It would be great if you define low, medium high intensity lighting in terms of Par levels....because I'm not sure how much is low, medium or high intense lighting
Zura Akhvlediani in the meantime just adjust light levels by depth in your tank.....high=top shelf medium=mid level low=bottom sand or shaded areas
Thank you for recording this series. Learning a lot! What is your opinion of Reef Bugs as a coral food choice?
Regarding online vendors, I’ve been surprised at how expensive fish and coral seem to be online compared to local stores. it used to be different, the online retailers get away with it now due to the shortage of marine life

I also buy most of my corals from Tidal Gardens or the LFS!
Minute 17:48, you mentioned Unique corals but the banner on the right says Austins Aqua farm :P
The shimmer in that tank is amazing! What lights are you guys running in there
As a NPS reefer, all of the sites that you mentioned have very little of the corals (2 - 3 frags, if any with more emphasis on the later) that I am interested in.
I will let you know how they do
Solid video bro! Shaka
Just have to say, the quote “WWC has a huge online presents”. That eludes to, they have lots of gifts. I guess presence?
My xena would pulse a lot when my oversized skimmer was off but when it was on it would barely pulse
Great video...your friend....'''CHRIS THE HOBBY GUY''
what is the ideal temperature for salt water tank that house live coral and fish? at the moment i have a couple of hammer heads, hairy mushroom and a zoa, all frags. I keep my temp at a steady 81 deg. is that too high? I'm new to the hobby and trying to learn the correct ways to maintain a reef tank/fish..
Thank you
great video hurry up and get to sps!!!
What’s the red zoa in the back at at 8:50 ? I’ve got a frag of it that isn’t growing and it often shrinks if I won’t feed it
Is there a company that offers you to choose which type of lighting option their coral was grown under to better acclimate to your tank? Thanks
I am not sure I understand what is meant by isolating a coral to an "island". Does that mean mount it on a small rock away from the main aquascape or just take the plug its attached to and stick it in the sand?
it means isolating them to their own rock
Will carbon absorb your big 3 and trace element?
I always browse my LFS for new corals but I definitely find the best selection and pricing comes from other hobbyists
Yeah, I am the same. All my best corals are from my reef club
Y'all know what size hole should be drilled on a 50 gallon tank for a 20 gallon sump? Thanks
+Peter Cartert and how many?
Can you guys talk about fragging corals in a later week? I am really interested in fragging my corals because they are all starting to grow very large. Unfortunately, I have always been afraid of fragging because I don't quite understand how to do it with 100% certainty that my coral is going to survive.
Great video!
As a noob (about 8 months in now) I’ve had limited success with softies yet my lps and sps were doing fine (until my skeletor moray snapped most off) couldn’t work it out, then realised my nitrates were too low due to nopox
Zoanthids=succulent of the ocean
But if you eat them....
You wont be here to answer
@@anonymouspeoplesuck6403 too late hes done it already.
Most of the softies safe with a tank of large angels?
How do Xenia’s spread? Do they creep out (like Zerg creep) or do they release water borne spore/eggs.
What is the green tipped coral on the 3:26 mark?
Have you guys ever had any health issues dealing with coral or your tanks? I hear zoas are poisonous.
is it necessary to dose calcium, magnesium and/or alkalinity when keeping only soft corals?
Why is their only few reef shops in UK? !
What light did you guys use on the 160 gallon tank
If they have what u want, u can't beat unique corals, $19 shipping cross country, nobody even comes close, even Florida to North Carolina is $35-$50, which is crazy, WWC is great to buy on a visit but their website barely has things in it, they do allot of eBay sales, vivid aquarium is nice but $50 shipping is high!!
Are 2, 425GPH power heads too much flow for a 32 gallon biocube? For softies
Great video .. would you dose calcium and alkalinity in an softie tank ?
+BulkReefSupplyCom Thanks I guess if I add a few LPS like fragspawn and acans brain and a monti cap or 2 I may need to add calcium and alkalinity.. but for most part will be soft dominated tank
