We have some interesting in month 3 of our winter compost experiment. After adding LAB that we made very inexpensively, we saw instant results.

Oh what an outstanding video concept, spring hasn't even kicked in and your compost is almost ready, when it warms up can only imagine the epic level of worm activity LAB inoculation rapid breakdown, I added LAB to my manure piles but didn't quite record the outcomes, i'd imagine if you cover it, it'd break the manure down and make it plant nutrient ready within 2 weeks? I've found the worms LOVE bokashi, not sure why content creators say its too acidic for them? Probably needs to be looked into, honestly, im at the point where i need food scraps because bokashi is such a hit.
We've had great success with Bokashi as well !! In fact, we made bokashi from Lab and added early on to this pile!!
Wait until you see the next couple videos, I'll be incorporating Vermicomposting to finish this pike, albeit it's happening already but stike for the next steps once the pile cools a bit :)
We trialed lab against Super Soil and other amendments on lettuce last spring, and it held its own!!! Tons of fantastic uses for it !!

Nicely done. I’ve been doing KNF for about 4 years and I’m still finding new uses for LAB. Most recently cleaning silver jewelry. Anyway back to compost…. I use LAB from start to finish in all my composting. It helps retain nutrients during the thermophilic stage when most of the nitrogenous inputs would otherwise burn off, it helps keep temperature in the 130 range longer, heats up quicker, matures faster and controls smell. I use it to Bokashi all my “uncompostable” household waste and weeds that have gone to seed and then hot compost them. As long as you start with enough carbon you should smell nothing when adding Bokashi to your hot compost. It also makes your compost nutrients more bio available to the plants you grow. You can even wrap up a LAB drenched compost heap in plastic to exclude oxygen and let it sit for 3 months with no flipping (Bokashi Compost) and have an amazing transformation. Lactobacillus is a facultative bacteria that work in both oxygenated and non oxygenated environments so it works in all types of compost approaches. I also have worm bins and since adding LAB they grow larger and eat faster. Soil drench, foliar feed etc… however you decide to use it you will see results.
This is fantastic!! We used bokashi bran to basically close the loop on household waste last year. I learned the hard way 🤢lol, but there that became sold on it. We used it in lettuce trials, powdery mildew, and now composting to great success. I to made a thistle, seaweed LAB "stew" last year and it was fantastic!!
I wanted to use it in isolation to see for myself, and it's hard to dispute our graph. That being said, increased moisture, the N from the kelp becoming available, and aerating the pile all played roles. But it was great to see. I've only been gardening/composting for coming up 2 years, and the marriage of chemistry, biology, soil structures, and textures is fascinating to me !!

@@clivesconundrumgarden I grew up with my home surrounded by corn fields and sugarcane of that gives you any idea. My career prevented it for a while but I got back into it about 20 years ago, about 10 years ago I started transitioning into organic and 4-5 years ago found KNF and haven’t looked back since. Like you said the whole soil biology part fascinates me and seeing the results is 100% confirmation. Plus the taste, omg the flavor and Brix of my fruit and veg is off the charts. My wife thinks KNF is nerdy but she will be the first one to brag about our garden. Go figure

Anita is the best !! Here, videos on LAB are fabulous, and she stressed the point of "do your homework."
The more people we chat with, the more I think it was the combination of 3 main factors : Moisture released by kelp, aerating the pile and the LAB.
We've definitely see results in lettuce trials, making our own Bokashi and fighting off powdery mildew:)

It'll be interesting to see how it goes but I'm so glad we tracked the temps. The graph definitely shows the combination of amnendments definitely increased temps, not that was the point. But I'll definitely continue to make LAB foresure.

When my compost bin rots completely I may turn that area into a two bin turning area, impossible to do at the moment. Lovely update Jason and I will be putting my pond weed in my bin in the future.

Honestly, Terry, I'd love to have your system. It's kinda of a perfect combination of hot and lazy composting, with the added benefits of massive amounts of worms!!
That being said, as we get "more experienced" in life, as wise man once said, "it's good to think about the future, and how we can make things easier on our bodies"
That's a pretty tight area. Perhaps having vertical doors that you could swing down and harvest from the side would save you jumping in and harvesting? As usual, it's clear in my head, but it is difficult to explain lol !!

@Terry King's Allotment Gardening On A Budget hmmmm, I hadn't considered that, but it makes a ton of sense. The only thing is, we've turned all our piles, and this one's unique in that regard. This one had a much higher "brown" ratio than others, especially our spring and summer ones...

It's pretty crazy but the more comments I get, the more I'm leaning to "maybe" on the LAB. I think there's no doubt lab helped, but I think the material absorbing the water from the kelp and aerating it also set it off. Definitely will have a more controlled test down the road. Can't wait for the next step. 🪱🪱🪱

Very interesting, even though I champion Seaweed, it did surprise me how quick your Kelp (much bigger than the UK version) broke down. The carbon dominated composts definitely hold their mass much better, and I look forward to see how they perform in the garden. That Lab treatment is of very great interest, thanks for introducing that element as it is unknown to me.
This made. My day coming from you Mike!! To be honest, it's probably a combination of the N in the kelp becoming available, the massive moisture increase, and aerating. Although it's hard to get around the graph. I'm really fascinated by it and plan on running trials in a more control/singular approach in the future.
It's incredible to my how long it's stayed "active" for considering the CN ratio. Lots of takeaways, albeit a little "blurry" atm!!

Wow!!! Just wow!!! AWESOMENESS!!! Black gold 🖤 Jason I love the addition of LAB to compost, it’s just amazing! Interesting about the worms too. High carbon is great to see too, very interesting! You have no idea how much joy it brings me to see you and others getting onto LAB, this stuff is SO FREAKIN powerful! Yep I totally swear by LAB, it has been my powerhouse and I believe the key to increased soil health, and therefore higher performing blooms. The biggest thing I’ve noticed with LAB for me has been disease reduction in plants, I mean INCREDIBLE reduction! It prevents mildew type diseases straight up! It’s insane! It does require consistent application tho, that’s key, so I apply every 1-2 weeks during growing season I use a watering can over the whole plant. Loved seeing your compost guys, just love all your doing! Will keep popping in when I can ok 👍 keep up the awesome work, you guys are the best!!! 🙌🏼💐💓🌻🌱🍃

Yep LAB was something I wanted ro use from day 1, when I got into gardening a couple years ago !! The hard part is, there's so much anecdotal information on it. But hearing people like you swearing by it tweaked our interest. Then, using Bokashi bran, to precompost was a game changer !!
Totally agree with consistent use and most importantly, "doing your own homework". It's definitely something to be used mindfully!!

Making a hot compost can really turn into an art, I think a new Claude Monet has been born.
Never tried the LAB, have used urine to get a pile hot after things begin to cool down, this seems a lot easier.
The DNR removes milfoil from our local lakes, have been considering collecting some for use in a hot compost.
The worms will stay on the fringes of "Too Hot". Cockroaches do the same thing in a commercial kitchen. The ones that live at the edges of "TOO Hot" reproduce like crazy and scoot like little rocket ships, I'm sure the worms are doing the same thing.
The biggest trick in my experience (only a few years), is reproducing a successful pile. Most of the time it goes off without a hitch, but once in a while Mother Nature throws you a curve ball.

Ya I was shocked, huge takeaway forsure. But looking back it makes a lot of sense !! Seaweed has to be 95%ish water. Definitely something to keep in mind especially if your making a new pile with more greens!!

Try adding some semi-crushed 100 percent hardwood charcoal in that composting process..in the end you will have finished compost mixed with biochar!
Awesome call, I did a trial last with biochar and bell peppers last year. There was a noticeable difference. I totally try it on our next pile !!

Thank you so much for your kind shout out, Jason. May I offer an alternate / supplemental explanation for the spike in temperature? When you added the LAB, you also added some water (albeit only 1 L), plus water seems to be coming out of the kelp. Additional moisture will greatly increase microbial populations and distribution through the bin. We're definitely going to head to the beach to go kelp hunting!

I've not ever used LAB but I must say I'm super interested in trying it!! The seaweed seems to really be beneficial. We're heading to the beach ( hopefully) next weekend. It's like a 3 hour drive so I plan on trying to find some. I do use comfrey quite a bit though & weeds.
And the temperature increase is really interesting & cool, did you happen to note the outside Temps?
You're gonna be so set by planting day 🖤

I don't know how seaweed would smell after 3 hours in a car. It might not be worth it lol. And it's often buggy, so watch out for that if you decide to risk it. Jason says you could try putting it in a cooler. But make it disposable.
We have general outside Temps for the area, but we don't have a thermometer where we need it to keep track. Definitely something we want to do in the future.

Did you also chart exterior temps? It would be interesting to see the contrast between the two. I think it was the lab that got the pile going again. I have tried the ammonia trick when my pike was carbon heavy. It does work.
We did initially, but I totally forgot to keep it up, lol !! We've had big temp swings but generally have had temps between 5 above and under 0 the past 3 weeks.
It's hard to quantify "what did what" but I'm super glad we tracked it :)

I used last year to build our lasagna inground beds. Definitely didn't hurt, as we were blown away by how well the soil performed last summer.

The pile did pick up a lot of water compared to the end of the last video. On the 2nd flip, you can easily see the steam coming off so it had to be pretty warm. Interesting the worms would still be in the center of the pile with the high temps. I would think they would migrate more towards the outside. Never thought of making LAB for use in the compost pile but it seems to be working for you. The most surprising thing is how little volume of material the pile has lost. My new piles always seem to lose 20% (or more) in the first 60 to 75 days if I don't continue to top them off with new materials. Just curious, did you knock over the spray bottle at least once when it was sitting on the pallet between the bins? For myself, it seems like that would be bound to happen. 🤣
I was so mindful of it I didn't 🤣🤣🤣, I knew if I put it to the side I would forget lol !! Interesting because of the small awkwardness it created, I could feel my back the next day!!
As the pile ate up the 50-70 liters of kelp it definitely over-hydrated it. I'd definitely like to run LAB in a more controlled way, it's hard not to think that it was a combination of increased moisture, N from kelp, aeration from flipping and LAB all working together.
But it sure makes for a unique graph lol, I've not experienced this before.
1 big thing this has taught me is not to get too wrapped up in CN ratios. Like Vermicomposting the only real threat is anerobes. And even that can be mitigated rather easily :)

A few wrong moves and the back makes you pay. 🤪🤣 I wrenched my back picking up a full tray of potted up peppers last year to put them outside. 🙄 took a good week or so to recover. With a good worm population in this pile, some of the extra water could be caused by the build up of castings soaking it up.

No problem!! Comfrey would be best. But any kind of deep-rooted "weed" works well - thistle, neetles, or even Dandelion:)

Hi Jason and Colleen. What’s your fastest time to create compost so far? You’re at 3 months on this pile right with temp pretty constant at 90°?
Jason says he has done an 18-day compost pile, but he felt it was only a decent mulch. He might get inspired to try again in the future, but for now, this way of hot composting seems to be working for him.
He's trying to come up with a compost that will feed the soil with maximum efficiency. He's not looking to grow the plants in the compost as much as he's looking to create a compost pile that will feed the soil that will grow the plants.
Phew! I was dictating that.
Anyway, this pile is about two months and three weeks old. The temps were far from constant, varying widely between 50 and 160F. They rose and fell fairly dramatically a few times. But they did spend a good amount of time above that 131F mark that is so critical.

I bet cha the female bantha's mammary glands would really fire up the compost 🤣 Selfishly, we're making these to reference and rewatch in the future. I think the biggest reason this pile has been so successful was having our "fail" from last year documented. Getting so many great suggestions has helped a ton as well!!

@Digwell Greenfingers that's what's so great about gardening. There are so many ways to great good results!! That being said, I have no idea how this will turn out. At worst, it'll feed the soil :)

Hi Jason, Geoff Lawton says that if you get the ratio right of carbon to nitrogen then you do not loose any mass from the pile. I think its 25 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen, a carbon base and top with small layers of nitrogen in between carbon.. Agree about the ratio, but how the heck do you achieve that. I know science, but it is just hard to achieve, for me. That's why I wanted to try 95 to 5 % browns. I know browns aren't 100% carbon, not even close, and vice versa.
I mean, grass is somewhere in the 12-25 to 1 CN ???
I think a well-balanced mix of materials is a great start. As you know I love overthinking things, but hopefully in a future, that will be a benefit!!

I've actually seen it!! He's a legend !! Just so fiddly to me atm, and I don't have the specific inputs required to make decent 18 day compost. I've tried but it was decent mulch at best. Definitely need to try again !!

It's definitely something to do some research on before deciding if it's right for you.
One thing I'm interested in, is will this out compete fungi. Especially added at such a late stage.
That wasn't the for me. I wanted to see if there was a bump in temperatures. And honestly, there's nothing definitive, even though the graph clearly shows an increase in temps. I'm now actually leaning towards a combination of the increased moisture from kelp, the N from the kelp becoming "more available, and aerating the pile all combined with the LAB to create the heat.
Something I'd definitely like to isolate under more controlled conditions in future piles :)

@@clivesconundrumgarden According to Ashley, the decomposition resulting from lactobacillus does not create heat. So I would have to agree the addition of the kelp, the water introduced with the kelp plus the turning, got the pile going again.
As long as you are turning the pile the fungal communities will be busted apart. For the compost to get the high fungal component it has to rest, or age. When I set my compost to rest is when I introduce native leaf litter. The compost I am using now in my soil mixes has been resting for almost 7 months, has a decent amount of good fungal hyphae and spores. I need to look at the potting mix I made up a week or so ago and see what that is lookin like.

For me, it depends on context, I think.
I've my Bokashi with my LAB and used it anerobically to break down all food scraps, veggies, and meat with good results. Last Sumner, we actually closed the loop at my brother in laws place :)))
We've used to treat powdery mildew
Used it in the last summer lettuce trial. Maybe check out the video. It's pretty cool
Used to pre-seedlings and now compost.
Used to my anaerobic teas, Thistle, weed, and seaweed last year
I have no idea what's in compost accelerators. All I know is that it is too expensive for us to consider using.
The other thing I absolutely understand, I'm no expert so any information is valuable and in the field, with all the variables it's hard to find concrete and definitive answers. Very cool stuff!!
@@clivesconundrumgarden No need in buying any of that compost accelerators, it probably would not hurt, but yet again?. What makes us good gardeners is we welcome our ignorance Try different things until we land on what works, then move on to the next project.
