Many years ago? As a matter of fact Genesis retired on 26.03.2022, when they’d played their very last concert in London. That’s not so long ago. After his return in 2007 Phil remained a band member.
I don’t think people understand that all the members of Genesis had solo careers at the same time they were members of Genesis. They never left, just slipped in and out. Phil had the best, most successful, solo career, but the other members went solo, too.
OMG, Phil Collins is one of the greatest drummers. I have all of the Genesis record slbums. I feel so bad he is so sick. Bless you, Phil! You're still #1 in my books. ❤❤❤
My dad taped together a bunch of plant pots and cut down some drumsticks for me when I was 2 and a bit years old for that exact reason. One of my earliest memories.
When you gasped and said “I love that guitarist”: That’s the legendary Leland Sklar, top-tier LA studio and touring bassist for the past 54 years. Still touring and working on albums. And, btw, a top-tier human being and a very good friend of Phil Collins. And a dead ringer for Gandalf! 😏✌️

Understatement. Phil Collins is one of three artists that has sold 100 million albums both in a group (Genesis) and as a solo artist. The other two are Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and Michael Jackson (The Jackson 5/Jacksons)
You use the right choice of words one of. There have been many great drummers throughout the 20th century. The problem is a lot of young people in today's generation do not acknowledge that do not do what's necessary to find out who they are. 🤔
Phil was the drummer for Genesis, a progressive rock band. When their lead singer Peter Gabriel went solo they searched a long time for a replacement only to find they had a great one, Phil, already in the band. Phil also had a great sense of humour that he injected into his shows. I believe he was the only man who took the super sonic Concorde from the UK to the US to perform at the Live Aid charity concert in both cities on the same day. He started in the theatre as a kid as the Artful Dodger in the play "Oliver".
What many dont realise about Phil is he introduced the new sound of drums in 80's. It is gated reverb drum sound. Before him the drums sounded dry and hollow and would never cut through the song. During one recording session with Peter Gabriel and producer Hugh Padgham they discovered this technique by accident but Phil perfected it so well everyone was using it in 80's and later to this day. And it is this drum sound that allowed many songs today to exist and without it they would never become hits.

I've seen Phil Collins many times in concert, both as lead singer of Genesis and on his solo tours. He's one of my heroes, as I am also a drummer. So glad you liked it. This is the best rendition of the song I have seen. I had the pleasure of attending an outdoor concert in Dallas which starred Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and of course Phil Collins!! That is an incredible trio!! Phil performed this very song. Later, Clapton walked up to the mic and broke into Layla and in that instant a bolt of lightning came down and branched out under the clouds!! He kept right on playing and then the rain came. We all stood with out lighters burning, with our arms stretched out above us.!! The rain stopped shortly after he finished the song!! To say that it was a spiritual event... well, it was. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. Everyone!
I also recommend (no reaction required) this song from "The Live And Loose In Paris" concert this live versus and the Paris.. The version you just reacted to and the Paris version are my two best favorites. Haunting & Hurtful song "In The Air Tonight" is born out of Phil Collins divorce. His other song to come because of his divorce"I Don't Care Anymore" That he hardly did in concert because it was to emotional. But thank God "In The Air Tonight" made it to every song list on all live concert dates.
Phil was the drummer for the band Genesis......after awhile he decided to go onto a solo career which skyrocketed him in the 80's. I got to see Phil Collins once. I was in the nose bleeds at a Robert Plant show "Principle of Moments" tour and had no idea Phil was even playing drums until the end of the night when Sir Robert introduced his phenomenal band and Phil just waved to the crowd and left after one more song. Total professional.
Collins was in the band Genesis. This is from his debut solo album "Face Value" released on February 13, 1981. In 1979, Collins began to write songs during a break in activity from Genesis. This song was used in a superb way in the series pilot for the 80s show "Miami Vice," which was a great show about Miami undercover cops trying to deal with the Florida drug trade, where so much money is involved that the criminals can easily make a million dollar bribe to get what they want. Thanks for letting me know about this channel over on your movie channel.
We had Genesis at our school dance back in the very early 70's, they had not long brought out Nursery Cryme, with members Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and Steve Hackett. Brilliant night I think, I was dosed up on parsnip wine at the time.
From Wiki... "Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists.[10] He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band.[11][12] He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.[13] He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013."
SInging while playing drums requires real talent, as singing requires proper breath control, so playing the drums while you sing is extremely difficult. Now, if you want to listen to more of Phil Collins... there is a TON of truly fantastic music both from his solo career and from his time with Genesis
Check out Cadbury gorilla advert and interview with Phil breaking the myth that it was him in costume it was a guitar player given 30mins to learn how to play drums then did it in one take the attitude of gorilla's movement was amazing please who doesn't know Phil lead singer and drummer with genesis a unique sound on all songs and film tracks
Please check out more Phil Collins and his band Genesis. This is a cool performance. However the studio version doesn't have all the added electronic sound effects. I'm not a fan of cheesy vocal effects. His voice doesn't need it.
Phil is one of the three artists ever to sell 100 million records, both with a band and solo. His band was Genesis. The other two are Michael Jackson, who was in the Jackson 5. And, of course, Paul McCartney who sold 100 million solo and tons more with the Beatles.
Phil is a man of many talents . Singer / Drummer / Actor . He started life as an child actor in London's Westend Theatres playing the role of The Artful Dodger in Oliver . He starred in childrens tv movies as a teenager & even got a cameo role in a Beatles movie . In the late 60s he started his own band The Phil Collins Band / Flaming Youth , a few years later joined Genesis as drummer/vocalist and went on to be lead singer . After Genesis he had a huge solo career and at one point was 3rd in the world after Elvis & Prince to sell over 100million solo albums . In 1988 he played the lead role in the movie Buster and in 1999 he did the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan .
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the live performance of In Air Tonight from Phil Collins . You might remember the song from the TV Miami Vice . That you might have seen on repeats . she looks a bit young to remember the original show from the late 80's .
Phil still is my biggest drumming influence. 🙂 Next to Genesis and his solo career, he was a session musician and record producer for a wide range of artists, such as Robert Plant, Philip Bailey, Frida (from ABBA), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Adam Ant, John Martyn, Gary Brooker, Paul McCartney and many more. 🙂
@@aleclewis9123 fantastic band!,, so much talent in there……man, they were tight! I love the video of the medley at…Glastonbury I think it was….1990? Not sure of the year.

It took me quite a while to learn to sing while playing first rhythm and then lead guitar. I can play drums quite basically, nothing like as powerful and nuanced as Phil plays, but I can't sing while doing so to save my life. The man is an inspiration.
Phil was in Genesis as their drummer throughout 1971-96. In 1976 he also became the singer, succeeding Peter Gabriel, bringing in Chester Thompson on drums for live tours. The band had regular short hiatuses where the individual members recorded solo projects. First Steve Hackett, then all three remaing members with Mike and the Mechanics, Tony Banks/Bankstatement and Phil Collins respectively. Phil released his first in 1981 after his divorce. After leaving the band he joined for the single Carpet Crawlers 1999 with Peter Gabriel. Also on the tours Turn it on again in 2007 and finally The last domino tour in 2022.
7:14 That bass player (or bass guitarist) is Leland Sklar. One of the best bassists in the world. He has his own channel here on UA-cam where he shows how he played this song, really fun to watch. An impressive dude with an impressive beard 😊
I've talked with a few drummers who said the drum cadence used in this song is extremely difficult to play.. I wouldn't know cause I can barely play the radio!
Phil started in the band Genesis as the drummer, with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. When Peter left the band, Phil took over as lead singer. He started his solo career in the 80s but still performed with the band. Check out other songs like Against All Odds, Another Day In Paradise and Easy Lover, then check out him in Genesis with songs like Mama and Land Of Confusion. He also starred in the lead role in the 1988 film Buster, about the 1963 Great Train Robbery in London, UK.

Thank you so much for your fantastic and beautiful reaction to Phil Collins. I have seen this video so many times (I'm in my late 60s).I love the reactions of younger generations today to something that was there probably before they were born.,your respect, was lovely to see. I smiled when you said when is this going to start, and then how much you loved the intro, I thought to myself, well if you love the intro you will probably be blown away by the end of it. I swear that I knew you would love the iconic guitarist and his cool layed back look. Well anyway, just THANK YOU, again, take care, Tony here in the UK 🇬🇧
In 1985 he played this song at the Live Aid Concert in London, Wembley Stadium. Later, at the same day, he performed "Against All Odds" in Philadelphia. As a worldwide part of this unforgetable concert.
He was the drummer for GENESIS, until Peter Gabriel left to start a solo career. That's when Phil stepped up and became the lead vocalist for the group.
You can see and hear his London music and drama training In this performance. He sang on the London stage, starring in the musical 'Oliver' before becoming a professional drummer, eventually joining the rock band Genesis. His leading role in a cool episode of the TV cops and robbers show Miami Vice (called 'Phil the Shill') got him a movie role. He starred in 'Buster', a love story/drama about a real-life 1964 train robbery. While all this was happening he was still with Genesis.....even with a solo career. He is a complicated and talented man, now retired and living in Switzerland.
Hes a class A legend, brilliant songwriter and incredible world renowned drummer. In 2003 he was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame and in 2010 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame as a part of Genesis.
I remember phil starring in a late 80s maybe early 90s movie called Buster where he played a common criminal who planned one last big score to retire on , a modern day train robbery . It was actually a good movie and he was a good actor

Nice reaction video 👍 Phil Collins is known worldwide as one of the best drummers ever, and of course an excellent songwriter and singer. He’s won several Grammys…Golden Globes & Brit Awards… plus other awards too! I’ve been a fan of his for years, as well as the band “Genesis” I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour. The drums that he used actually came up through the floor just before he got to them (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video) I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal! What a performer!

Thanks for letting me know about this channel over on your movie channel.
very good singer and musicien .. i like his voice

I got goose bumps - watching your reaction, ❤this performance
That he has not been inducted into the so-called RRHOF as a solo artist is a travesty.
Next to Genesis and his solo career, he was a session musician and record producer for a wide range of artists, such as Robert Plant, Philip Bailey, Frida (from ABBA), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Adam Ant, John Martyn, Gary Brooker, Paul McCartney and many more. 🙂
And a composer for Disney. Huge talent
@@helenespaulding7562 Absolutely. And he was leader of his own big band in the late 90s. 😊
@@aleclewis9123 fantastic band!,, so much talent in there……man, they were tight! I love the video of the medley at…Glastonbury I think it was….1990? Not sure of the year.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 it was Knebworth. They never played the Glastonbury festival.
Yes, it was 1990 for The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert in support of the Nordoff Robbins charity.
Also on the tours Turn it on again in 2007 and finally The last domino tour in 2022.
omg Phil is amazing its sad to see his health declining. The 80's the best
A great reaction, as always
The album Face Value got me through some bad times as a kid . I was 14 when I bought this and still play it 👍❤🇬🇧
We can see a classic scene with this song, on the first episode of TV show "Miami Vice" (in 1984)
7:14 That bass player (or bass guitarist) is Leland Sklar. One of the best bassists in the world. He has his own channel here on UA-cam where he shows how he played this song, really fun to watch. An impressive dude with an impressive beard 😊
When u watch a reaction from a reactor when don’t know he play drums and sings is the absolute best reaction to watch ❤❤
I've talked with a few drummers who said the drum cadence used in this song is extremely difficult to play.. I wouldn't know cause I can barely play the radio!
This is really powerful 😢
Phil started in the band Genesis as the drummer, with Peter Gabriel as lead singer.
When Peter left the band, Phil took over as lead singer.
He started his solo career in the 80s but still performed with the band.
Check out other songs like Against All Odds, Another Day In Paradise and Easy Lover, then check out him in Genesis with songs like Mama and Land Of Confusion.
He also starred in the lead role in the 1988 film Buster, about the 1963 Great Train Robbery in London, UK.
Not bad for a drummer who sings a bit! 🔥🔥
best Live Version ever ...
I love how you thought
that it was an intro for a long time. 😂
Great reaction to a great song. This lady is very pretty too.
Missed that beautiful smile welcome back. Keep up the fantastic job. God bless you and yours. Look forward to the next one.
Boston : Foreplay/ Longtime you will love it . I'm new here 69 years old I love your reactions to the old stuff I grew up on . I'll send you more you should listin to from Tree Dog Night , Chicago, Ten Years After, The Eagles and many more
Thank you so much for your fantastic and beautiful reaction to Phil Collins.
Hi good looking Phil Collins before going solo was the drummer in th 70s band Genesis
Your enthusiasm was lovely to watch.
He was the drummer for GENESIS, until Peter Gabriel left to start a solo career. That's when Phil stepped up and became the lead vocalist for the group.
I hope you checked more videos and his film he is Phil x so talented x
One of the best entertainers of all time.
I remember phil starring in a late 80s maybe early 90s movie called Buster where he played a common criminal who planned one last big score to retire on , a modern day train robbery . It was actually a good movie and he was a good actor
Best opening Red Strat guitar lock of all time! Pink Floyd Red Strat "comfortably numb is the best actual solo of all time! Doesn't get better than a Red Strat guitar! 🤣👍
Nice reaction video 👍
Phil Collins is known worldwide as one of the best drummers ever, and of course an excellent songwriter and singer. He’s won several Grammys…Golden Globes & Brit Awards… plus other awards too! I’ve been a fan of his for years, as well as the band “Genesis”
I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour.
The drums that he used actually came up through the floor just before he got to them (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video) I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal!
What a performer!
Writing the music for 'Tarzan' won him an Oscar for best song that year.
You should check out some more of Phil Collins live with Genesis: "Genesis - In The Cage Medley/Afterglow - 1984".
Back before they used auto tunning on the vocals. Incredible!!! 😍
That group Genesis. The soloists were Peter Gabriel and Phil Colin's there songs still so great..
He was the drummer of the group Genesis and he was alreary making back vocals and drumming at the same time.
yep, he always been a very good drummer :)
super génial phil❤
06:28 "he do drums". Well, he's a drummer in first, singing came later
This is better than the studio version
I always love your videos. I used to love flaying through the streets in my 300zx turbo with this song blasting on my stereo.
John Giblin played on the single and album. He came up with the bass line and a fellow Scot. Sadly passed away last year
you can listen over 100 Phil Collins or Genesis Songs from hard to love songs. And you are then in another World......
yee many people forget.. that Phil is not a singer that know to play drums but tha he is one of the best drumer ever that can sing! since the time he was with GENESIS
