Okay Stacy, a history lesson from a guy who was there, sort of. The Monsters of Rock concert was a free concert put on by the Russian government. It was held at the Tushino Airfield in Moscow, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. They estimated 1.6 million attendees. Being American I was not allowed to go but I was in the US Embassy about 3 miles away. If you look at the crowds those structures you see are actually speaker towers. The concert was so loud that inside the Embassy we still measured the sounds at an average of 96db. According to an official memo received by the Embassy in following days, there were 54 deaths attributed to the concert and the following day over 126k people were treated for hearing loss. And those helicopters you referenced had a dual purpose, one was to move the air around in the crowd and also be on standby in case an emergency rescue was needed. Also, the Russian military was doing security. Any other questions that I can answer, just let me know. 😁👍
That's awesome! I knew some of this stuff but to hear it from someone who was that close is incredible. 3 miles away and 96db? That's insane! I am surprised that only 126K people had hearing loss. I'm willing to bet they were all those people I the front and anyone in the vicinity of those speakers you spoke of. Is there a complete video of this concert? This is the only one I've ever seen Id love to see more of the entire show
1.6 million people. Military helicopters. Soldiers who were there to keep the order gave up and just joined the crowd One of the first shows by western bands that were allowed to play there as the iron curtain started to fall
@@shannonherb2048 Yeah it basically turned into a national celebration of finally being allowed to be a part of the rest of the world. Instead of just listening to smuggled records and tapes or pirate pressings of albums on old x-ray plates (yes that was a thing because it was readily available vinyl sheets)
Hi Stacey, I saw that most of your questions have already been answered. I will add one more thing, because I was at this concert, I was 19 years old at the time. It is one of the best memories of my life, and certainly better than my wedding or buying my first car. :) The concert was held in an empty field in the middle of Moscow, this place is called Khodynka, and in the old days there was an airfield, at the time of the concert there was a vacant lot, and now there is a residential area. Admission was free. There were 5 bands playing at the concert: the group E.S.T. from the USSR and Western bands Pantera, Black Grouse, Metallica and AC/DC. The concert started at 2 p.m. and ended around 10 p.m. Since there were so many people, the police had to cut the crowd into several sectors to create a vacuum, otherwise people would have crushed each other. Those who were not in the first sector were outraged that they were being pushed further away from the stage, creating a vacuum, and then fights with the police began. In addition to fights, empty bottles were thrown at the heads of the police. I saw wounded people both among the audience and among the police. Many were drunk. Soldiers from the military communications unit arrived to help the police, since it was simply the nearest military unit. A helicopter was flying over the crowd, I don’t know why, but its door was open and there was a videographer sitting there, smiling and filming us, and we were showing him the middle finger. The sound was about 130 decibels, my chest vibrated like a sheet of plywood. The next day, SNC radio reported that there were 600,000 people there. I don’t know if this is the biggest concert in history, but it is the biggest concert for Metallica. I was standing close because I arrived around 10 a.m. I saw people sleeping around fires - these were the people who occupied the area the night before. A lot of people were not from Moscow, but from different cities of the Soviet Union, they had flags with the names of their cities. Some people traveled 4000 kilometers by train. Never in my life have I seen anything more epic than this. As soon as Metallica started playing, all the fighting stopped, as if a wizard waved his wand. Later, the soldiers relaxed, broke their chain, turned to face the stage and started having fun with us. This concert is the greatest gift I have ever received in my entire life. We had been listening to Metallica for 7-8 years before this concert, copying each other's tapes until the 20th or 30th copy allowed us to hear something. And we never expected to see our idols live. When they saw this huge crowd and the disobedience against the police, they realized that if everyone wanted to get a souvenir and climbed on stage, it would be death. They wanted to cancel the show. 600,000 drunk Russians is not a very safe society. But they didn't know that on the contrary we were ready to fight with anyone not to let them be offended, and just to see and hear them, our beloved Metallica. They found their balls and went on stage. They played for about an hour and 20 minutes. After that, Metallica gave concerts in Moscow three times in different years and once in St. Petersburg, and I was at one of these concerts in 2007. We are waiting for them again and again. Now our countries are going through the most difficult page in the history of our relations, and when my heart hardens against America, I just turn on their music, any of their albums, and am glad that they exist. Russians love Metallica and wish them well and peace.
The Metallica concert in Moscow on September 28, 1991, drew an estimated crowd of between 1.6 and 1.8 million people. It was part of the Monsters of Rock festival, which also featured bands like AC/DC and Pantera. This massive concert was one of the largest free rock concerts in history and took place at Tushino Airfield. It’s particularly remembered because it happened shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union, symbolizing a moment of newfound freedom and cultural change in Russia.
Metallica is not a concert, it is an experience. They give 1000% every show. They did an opening gig on an Ozzy tour back in the 80s. It was the last time this band was not at least a co-headliner. I've been lucky enough to have seen 8 Metallica shows since the 80s. I've never been disappointed. If you get the opportunity to see them, I strongly recommend going. You will not regret it.
I have seen Metallica live so many times. They are so good. Live on CD the same shit. They are very very good. I miss Jason newstead so bad he he was. He was the band too. I really don't care for Robert trugelio of suicidal tendencies don't care for him too much.. Well what can you do? Metallica came out October 1981 right after MTV debuted 1 August 1981. The first song for MTV was by the bugles video killed the radio Star. I have that on tape and CD. Cool song. I still like it that followed the flock of seagulls. I do believe I am a rock and roll junkie. I love music Metallica it's fucking awesome
Stacy or whoever you are, you're a beautiful woman 1.5 million. I do believe I've seen Metallica so many times. They never cease to amaze you but Jason newstead's not with the band. No more. You are fucking pretty girl you are and you talk so adequately unreal. Good luck! Wow you're a hottie I wish you would stop talking and let the video roll Sandman is one hell of a song and video. Oh my God Metallica debut October 1981 yes ma'am metal up your ass was originally what it was called. They had to change it. Look it up. The rest is history. I have the shirt. The original shirt metal up your ass. It's really cool. I am a major rock and roll geek. I'm 58, I live in South Florida
This is a special show. People forget Metallica wasn’t the headliner, AC/DC was. But it’s significant because they were on the monsters of rock tour in Europe while the black Album was blowing up at home. This was the last time they were ever an opening act with one exception for a one off stones show. They are becoming the biggest band in the world right here in real time.
Metallica's concert at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow, Russia in 1991 is considered the largest rock concert in the band's history, with an estimated 1.6 million people in attendance
Largest for Metallica but not the largest concert though if you can believe it. Rod Stewart performed in front of 3.5 million in the early 90s for new years.
This was one of the first Western concerts in the USSR before the Soviet Union fell. It was in Moscow. These people were anxious for anything from the US.
You have to realise that for people back then, and especially the crowd in that particular concert, the music wasn't just about the sound, it represented a whole worldview and way of life.
This concert was probably the coolest thing these people have ever seen in their lives. Every single one of them grew up under the boot of the Soviet Union. I can't imagine the energy in that crowd.
When Metallica went to my country in 1993 I was 18 yrs old they play 3 nights on row and they had every of those night 160.000 people in the Vélez Sarfield Stadium It was the best concert of my life in that time Argentina….. 30 yrs after here in Edmonton-Canadá i went to the concert I went we my daughter without me knowing and she did it, took as an early b-day present it was a surprise I’d cried my eyes out I couldn’t believe I was there at 50 yrs old w my baby girl and I went back to that last night back in 1993….. and they sound perfect .
It was the biggest Metallica performance in its history. I was 21 and no stadium in Moscow would have accepted such a crowd. The concert took place in Tushino, a military airfield. After that, Hetfield fell in love with the Russian people and came to visit us many more times alone without Metallica.
My heart goes out to anyone oppressed by communism. It was very emotional for me to see this amazing crowd's introduction to Western ideals and freedom. It helps keep me grounded to not take my way of life for granted. Many blessing to you friend! Greetings from Atlanta Georgia USA.
@@davidmiera8858 Thank you for your heartfelt words, FRIEND from Atlanta!!! I am also watching what is happening in the United States and I am worried, "capital" is dragging the American People into a civil war...
@@davidmiera8858 WHAT IS WRONG ABOUT COMMUNISUM? IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR GENERATIONS IF NOT CENTURIES. DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THE PEOPLE IN CHINA AND RUSSIA HAVE NO FREEDOM AT ALL. It’s not about Metallica. It’s about The People. The First time these beautiful people were “Allowed” to have/attend/see a Concert. It gets me every time. It’s really sad Reactors don’t know how important this was.
React to MV of Nothing Else Matters!!!!! This concert moment will never be repeated again! Imagine getting to hear western music for the first time in your life! They didn’t have radios that went outside of the Soviet union. Had just been allowed on radios from outside of Russia for less than a year, the people were hungry for anything that they never experienced. They were dying for freedom. Many traveled for a week on foot to get here. Many died, many were injured. All for this moment in history.!!!
@@amyaeschbach3581dude we lived in ussr not mars. While yes concerts like these weren’t a thing there were plenty of Russian rock bands and we all had Michael Jackson records and Metallica and Beatles. Enough with the Soviets were bad narrative
I've seen Metallica live on stage twice. The first time was absolutely amazing. The boys put on an incredible show. Each song was given 180%. The playlist was executed so well. Each song complemented the next and so on. When we left, my ears were ringing for 3 days. I was so happy. Then, when they came back several years later, they played with the same passion and forethought. But my local government had, over the previous couple of years, legislated legal noise limits. So while the concert was great and loud. We walked out at the end and was able to hold a private conversation in a crowded area with no need to shout or repeat ourselves. That was the last concert I was to. Over 20 years ago.
James (Hetfield, lead singer) has the same stage presence today. Yes, they are still touring, my son and I went to see them at Twickenham in 2019 (second time we'd seen them). They've been performing for so long that you can find 3 generations of fans from the same family going to see them together. They sound just as good now as they did in the 80s. You're going to have a blast with their back catalogue. One, Master of Puppets, Fade to Black, Creeping Death (from this concert), Nothing Else Matters. You'll hear of all these and more in the comments. They've got over 35 years of top class material.
Too bad everyone just reacts to the main radio singles and never any others. My dad just saw them a week ago (I live in another state or id have gone with) my dad said they still did a 16 song set which is unreal at their age while still maintaining the energy and stage presence all these years later
Which is a crazy concept to me because my dad could have taught them all in highschool, and I'm 25. His first year teaching out of college was 1978. Imagining having a grandpa that loves them is impossible to me haha
@@ImThe5thKing Well, I'm a grandfather. I went to my first metal gig in 1978. Def Leppard. Though my granddaughter is a little too young to be taken to a gig, not yet 1. But she's been sat behind my drum kit and loved the sound of the cymbals (played softly) especially 😁
James has the same stage presence, but unfortunately not the same sound to his voice. This was the last tour that he actually sounded amazing. He started taking singing lessons before recording the black album and I personally think he was better off without them. I have seen them 16 times and there was really nothing like hearing him sing and the band as a whole on the Damaged Justice tour in 1988-89. That was when they were at their best live.
@never2late_mtb349 I went to see them last summer in Jersey. Still rockin out after all these decades. My wife & daughter went to, my daughter was totally blown away. She's not really a metal head but she was banging her head as hard as anyone else. Metallica, bringing families 2gthr with speed & aggression like no one else can.
That's it Stacey today is the point of no return, you are discovering Metallica and nothing will be the same again. This group, based on all the music that I suggested to you on Twitch, will make you experience grandiose and unique emotions... I am so happy and proud of your journey, we will always be there at your side to help you discover the best of Metal. Another reaction masterclass from you Stacey, you always have very accurate words. You speak about music with a wisdom that deserves respect. Imagine that I have been listening to Enter Sandman for almost 32 years and that when I started listening just now it still gave me goosebumps... Another example of the power and quality of Metallica. Bye'n'cha my friend 🤘🤘🤘☺
YES! YES! YES! ABOUT TIME YOUR GOING TO LOVE THIS, played in Moscow's Tushino Airfield in 1991 as part of the "Monsters of Rock" festival. The concert drew an estimated 1.6 million attendees, making it one of the largest concerts ever held. The performance took place just months before the Soviet Union's collapse.
@@jrc01718 it came before the internet, obviously. it was an estimation of the organizers for the amount of people present there over the whole weekend.
i realized awhile ago that great songs have something in common.. they're all created from a perfect storm... the perfect voice, lyrics, melody and hook.. often great bands rise to the top because they had a mix of great people.. a great voice.. a great guitar player.. a great drummer... metallica rose to the top for a reason... there one hit wonders because it's hard to find good hooks and voices that work with many songs.. one of the best songs ever i think is Passenger's let her go.. almost 4 billion views.. the voice is so unique but it only fit that one perfect song it seems.. while other voices like ac/dc thunderstruck and back in black .. and guns n' roses axl's voice is just insanely good.. so many great bands.. creedance cclearwater revival looking out my backdoor.. iko iko.. don't worry be happy.. so many unique voices and catchy songs.. of course some don't have super unique voices but they're still identifiable like eminem.. but metallica.. was just perfect .. and they made so many perfect storms.. i wish you would of watched more of them.. there's so many.. but gnr is such a close second to them.. almost equal really.. but there was many more like bon jovi and skid row and def leppard.. so so many.. and lots studied music.. had some of highest rated guitarists like slash and richie sambora... it's not like they just got lucky.. maybe to find each other sure.. but they rose from thousands and thousands of bar bands around the world.. because they were the perfect storms.. the beatles michael jackson .. you name it... they had the hooks.. the catchy lyrics and voices.. maybe if more realize this they'll find their perfect storm.. even one is enough
The years of the 90s were great,,, I would be at Yankee stadium wearing my favorite closers jersey,, still have it,, it's 26 years old... and when my pitcher came out... this song was playing loud ... letting everyone know it was night night...❤❤❤
To put this in perspective: Taylor Swift, who has been an international icon and phemonenon for many years, has recently played three back-to-back shows each attended by a record 96,000 people. And that's still 16 times less than this concert, held in times when there was no Internet.
Also Russian youth was banned from western influence and music. So most people couldn’t buy a Metallica album so most had a to copy a cassette tape or burn a CD. And still showed up in huge numbers!
Well Metallica has talent and they do what they want. Swift has no talent and is bought and paid for. Metallica and swiffer aren’t even comparable. The swiffer fans won’t last because they don’t actually care about music. Metallica will live on forever. The fans are hardcore. Metallica will be in encyclopedia. Swiffer will go the way of the fidget spinner.
When Taylor Swift organizes concerts, the ticket prices are hefty. The Monsters of Rock concert was free for visitors, apart from the travel costs to Moscow.
@UltraViolent21 who are you to say that Taylor Swift fans don't know anything don't care about music I'm a Taylor Swift fan and a Metallica fan what do you got to say about that
In 1991 the iron curtain came down in Russia , Boris Yeltsin became the president of Russia,, He went around asking college kids and young adults in general what they really wanted> The overwhelming majority was a rock concert,, Metallica was on tour with ACDC in Europe at the time.. They were contacted and agreed to do a free concert.. 1.6 million + showed up,,The helicopters were there to keep order, but to also keep people cool,, this was held in Moscow .
evrytime someone posts a number it gets bigger>LOL originally estimated 500,000 people for Metallica's show and over a million for the entire weekend of shows
Honestly. If it was the first time I'd ever seen the video I would have had tears. That band. That crowd. That time in Russia. Epic. Touched a chord of humanity.
Monsters of Rock 1991 on the 28th Sept at Tushino Airfield Moscow - the line up was AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera, The Black Crowes and a Russian metal band E.S.T. The, then collapsing Soviet rule allowed the tour and the event was basically free, the attendance is not really known, but legend says it was 1.6 million. It was almost certainly over 1 million. As you can see, security was literally a division of Soviet troops, many of whom joined the crowd. Something to think about; most of the attendees were likely in their teens and early 20s (at that time, I myself was 18 then I'm now in my 50's). Now it is 33 years later and I wonder how many of those young people are still alive today, I wonder how many (if any) are now important or powerful people in Russia, how many may be politicians or military commanders in Russia or Ukraine. An exceptional moment in time and history. It is tragic to see what has become of the nation(s) that welcomed that amazing tour.
Having grown up with Metallica in my teens, I’ve seen them in concert 11 times. Watching this intro still brings tears to my eyes. Not hundreds and thousands, that crowd is hundreds of thousands!! Metallica and now also 5FDP are staples still in all of my playlists!! They’re a Bay Area (San Francisco) group of guys. I lived in N. CA most of my life. I always loved the stories of them going into small Bay Area bars for the night, fill it up, lock the doors and play. I was never lucky enough but a buddy of mine was. My biggest regret was not having YT at the time of this event. When the first VHS tapes started to come out I couldn’t wait for it to be on tape lmao
Current members James Hetfield - lead vocals, rhythm guitar (1981-present) Kirk Hammett - lead guitar, backing vocals (1983-present) Robert Trujillo - bass, backing vocals (2003-present) Lars Ulrich - drums (1981-present) Session/touring musicians Bob Rock - bass (2001-2003) Former members Dave Mustaine - lead guitar, backing vocals (1981-1983) Ron McGovney - bass, backing vocals (1981-1982) Cliff Burton - bass, backing vocals (1982-1986; his death) Jason Newsted - bass, backing vocals (1986-2001)
Dave Mustaine was fired because he partied too hard. Can you imagine the guys in Metallica telling you "Hey man, it's just not working out. Your lifestyle is over the top"?
Erik Marshall has been on stage multiple times as a touring member, when James was rehabbing from his Pyro burns and a couple times on the Summer Sanitarium tour when James was hurt and couldn't do the show, he played some of the guitar parts (others were filled by guitarists from the other groups, mostly System of a Down's guitarist)
My dad was at this "Monsters of Rock" Moscow '91 edition (I was 5 months old) and he arrived home only 3 days later because of police. Cops was arresting a lot of random people who wasn't drunk, who doesn't fight with cops ect ect. But still when my dad remembering this crazy festival, he smiles a lot) Yeah, "Monsters of Rock" was attended by over 1.000.000 people at Tushino airfield and it was free for audience
Stacy, I looked this up not long after first hearing about this concert. It is tied for fifth for the world’s largest rock concerts. Some of the bigger ones have been more recently. It’s still crazy the number of people who were there.
I was 18 when this happened. I'll never forget hearing about how many people attended this concert in Moscow. Metallica was almost the only band I listened to in high school. Growing up in the era of the end of the Iron Curtain, I didn't think anything like this would be possible. Imagine my surprise when they announced it. I was floored.
The real quiz is their performance of Harvester of Sorrow at the same concert. No one reacts to it and it is one of the greatest live performances of all time.
One of the largest concerts ever, and also one of the most symbolically significant concerts ever. First proper concert behind the iron curtain. 1.6m estimated I think? Must have been something to see live…
not entirely true... Iron Maiden went on a full fledged tour through Eastern Europe in the mid-80's, and they were not toned down concerts. Also, 2 years before this one was the Moscow Music Peace Fest, which, while not having as many people because it was in a stadium so "only" 100,000 people could attend, was more significant because it was before communism was falling in Eastern Europe and all, it was the first really big rock fest behind the Iron Curtain (Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Scorpions and Cinderella played)
To this days this stands as, if not the biggest, one of the biggest concerts ever. It was in 1991 in Moscow, Russia. It's a crazy thing that those bands gathered so many people... around 1.6 million people... I doubt any musicians nowadays can accomplish such an achievement...
everyone seems to forget this little tidbit.... "The British heavy metal band Iron Maiden first played in Poland on August 9, 1984, in Warsaw, as part of their World Slavery Tour. The tour supported their fifth album, Powerslave, and took place across Communist Eastern Europe in the summer of 1984. Iron Maiden was one of the first major rock bands to play big shows in the Communist Eastern Bloc at the time"
Uriah heep played in 1987 in Russia, the scorpions in 1988 and in 1989 there was the Moscow Music and peace festival, with Cinderella; scorpions; Skid Row; Motley Crue; Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi+3 Russian bands.
FYI this was an all-day concert featuring Pantera, EST, The Black Crows, Metallica, and AC/DC. Apparently nobody died, at least not officially. It was really hot and I don't want to imagine the toilet situation. Massively epic.
I know, I always hear people throwing out numbers. Like, thete was this many deaths, this many women "hurt", this many bones broke, and so on. I can ABSOLUTELY ASURE YOU, these numbers are fabricated. If for no other reason than this was the SOVIET UNION!!! And, we still don't know what happened to 9 hikers on Dyatlov's pass (Dead Mountain), because the USAR doesn't want "BAD" press, but, somehow, someway, people I'm the UNITED STATES, mind you, got heavily secured Russian state secrets? And what double agent did you get these from again?
Well over a million people squished into 1 concert, people died, and the people at the back couldn't see or hear a thing. This was in 91 at the end of the Cold War
It has been said many times that there is no reliable confirmation from any credible sources that anyone died there, it's just a rumor. There were some riots and even injured people, but no deaths.
This was a freaking AMAZING concert!! There were a lot of bands there but this one in 1991 eas definitely headlined by Metallica. They also had another one of these on 1989. Over 1 million people at both of them.
On Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the Bellville Velodrome. Cape Town, South Africa. I saw Metallica live in concert on their world tour, it was EPIC!!! Been a fan for YEARS!! Music is a universal language. Stacey the lead singer's name is James Hetfield he is amazing!
Not all. I caught this tour in Berlin by sheer coincidence as an American student at the time. AC/DC was my 1st concert ever and got into Metallica with Ride the Lighting. So my 2 favorite bands (yes I’m a Beavis & Butthead) we’re co headliners! Metal head heaven.
May be someones beleive that, but i promise you - Metallica in Russia was (and still) waaaay more popular. AcDc - is band of one song. Like Europe or Eagles
The Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow back in 1991 was an epic moment in rock history! Held at the Tushino Airfield, it featured live performances by legendary bands like AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, Pantera and E.S.T.. But what made it truly remarkable was the context: it took place just a month after the failed August Putsch, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Imagine this: 1.6 million rock and metal fans converged in Moscow for the first ever open-air rock concert. And guess what? The concert was completely free, which drew even more people to the event. The helicopters were there to manage the excitable rock fans, and even military personnel shed their uniforms to headbang along! there are some reports that the helicopters were flying over the crowd to cool them down.. don't know if that's true or not. This wasn’t just a concert; it was a cultural invasion, a Western rock armada landing on Soviet soil. I think the local mayor said that he thought only about 300 people would turn up.. don't underestimate loyal Rock and Metal fans lol. If you love this then you MUST check out Metallica live in Seattle 1989 this whole concert is legendry with us Metallica fans. They were just Brutal at this show.. my all time top Metallica concert.. been into them for over 35 years.. you are gonna enjoy this rabbit hole.
The helicopters weren't there for security but to fan fresh air into the crowd. 1.6 million by one estimate. This was one of the first concerts to play to the people of the soon to be disbanded Soviet Union. Although there are a lot of theories out there, I firmly believe that it was rock music that toppled the Soviet Union. From the first bands (Cliff Richard, Uriah Heap, Nitty Gritty Dirt band, etc) to play within the Iron Curtain came a crack in the oppression of the Soviet system. This concert proved that the Communists could no longer control the young people who ended up gathering the courage to bring down their sacred Soviet Union. In short, rock music accomplished what almost 50 years of anti-communist rhetoric failed to do. Topple the Berlin Wall! Damn, we good! Loved your reaction to this, Stacey. You always bring a fresh, intelligent take on the music that I've loved for over 60 years. Blessings!
I was going to mention the helicopters fanning air, but figured I would check the comments first. From someone who spent a good amount of time underneath them, I can confirm that it works very well. 😎👍
I thought it was David Hasselhoff that toppled the Soviet Union. Yes, I am joking, but he probably thinks so, since he was asked to sing as the wall was coming down...lol.
Hello. I am a huge Metallica fan and I enjoyed your reaction to enter Sandman. I remembered when Metallica's Metallica entered at #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 18 million copies in the United States all of their shows were sold out including the show in Moscow, Russia which was 1.6 million people.
You're damn right about that. This girl is so hot. It's unbelievable and so is her voice. Stacy, you're beautiful. Wish I had a girlfriend like you. Unbelievable. I like how you jam Bob. Your head gorgeous smile. That's what we do. This is a concert I've seen Metallica a million times. They never disappoint you just like AC/DC. Unbelievable jam in my car. Same shit. I'm 58 live in South Florida
Live Aid was also broadcast around the world. plenty of people watched from home. But yeah this was when western bands began being able to play here and so for a first time turnout, it was destined to be huge.
From that same concert Pantera played too. There is a song called Domintation youll have you watch. One of the best guitar solos ever. This was after the fall of the Soviet Union. This is the first concert played from bands from The "West" ever played in Russia. Estimated 1.6 million people. It was a FREE concert. It was called "For Those About to Rock: Monsters In Moscow" Metallica, ACDC, Pantera and The Black Crows. whats crazy is seeing the soldiers and the crowd together . This is the Monsters of Rock concert in Moscow I believe. This is shortly following the Berlin Wall coming down. Metallica, The Black Crowes Pantera and my favorite band, AC/DC performed there also

Hi Stacy, im a cat dad and a huge Metallica fan. Their was an estimated 1.6 million people in attendance. It was held at an air field outside of Moscow.
This concert was definitely legendary. There will be a few people in the comments that will poop on the numbers, but the estimate was 1.5 to 1.6 million people going through the gates. It was the first free open air concert in Russia. Like mentioned, there were other bands playing, like AC/DC, but Metallica absolutely killed it. Loved the review! James Hetfield (lead vocalist) always slays it
This show was in Moscow in 1991 i believe there were one and a half million and it was one of the first time western bands were aloud to play Russia. Love, best wishes and happiness, Alex Sanchez
They stopped counting at 1.5 million people estimates go up to 3 million and 55 people died at this concert. It was free and the first time metal music was allowed in Russia. It was just after the fall of the Iron curtain in 1990.
About 300 thousand spectators came and came from other cities to the concert with the participation of PANTHERA, BLACK CROSE, METALLIKA, AS / DS and our EST. This concert was guarded by 11 thousand people: police, riot police, internal troops, rifle divisions of the Soviet Army. When the first bottles fell on their heads and two soldiers were taken away by an ambulance, angry law enforcement officers began to rush at anyone they did not like, beating people with their hands, feet and clubs. The space in front of the stage literally turned into a bloody battle that did not stop from the very beginning of the concert until midnight. According to the ambulance station, 56 people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, of which 16 were military personnel." Oleg PSHENICHNY Photo by L. LAZAREV "Horizon №12'1991

Rod Stewart holds the current world record for the biggest gig of all time, which was performed on Copacabana Beach to a staggering 3.5 million people celebrating New Year's Eve in 1994. I would hate to be in the middle of this, and that Taco Bell you had for breakfast starts to kick in, and your stomach starts to rumble-you're done! 😆I know I'm not the only one thinking about it.
This was the end of the Iron Curtain era. To celebrate freedom one of the things was this free concert. It was held at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. By noon, 300 000 festival attendees had entered the area. When Pantera played there were 700 000 in the audience. As the festival went on the number grew to a million. Metallica reached 1,6 million. Closing act was AC/DC. Heard different rumours (cannot confirm this) about how many people in the crowd got injuried due to violent clashes between the public, the police and even military. To oversee the event, there were 11 000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards and riot police. Very tragic whatever the amount was. This is what was said according to the journalist report.
LOL your logic is lacking, AC/DC was the main act, so the top number of people was at night. no source ever reported 1.6 mil at the Metallica opening show.
I have to say that bands such as Metallica, acdc , iron maiden generally have the best musicians. And the lead singer is really good. Real music. Real bands
For a little context, the concert was in Moscow, the capital of Russia in 1991. The US and Russia had been "fighting" the Cold War for the past 30/40 years, threatening nuclear armageddon against one another for decades before this. Russia (the Soviet Union) was ruled by dictators, was secretive, didn't open up to the world and very much didn't like the US, but it collapsed around this time, the countries that they swallowed up began becoming independent again. All those people (1.6 million or more) had been held captive by their cruel and insane government for years, a lot of them for the entire lives. Metallica, an American metal group, playing in your capital is not only a celebration, but a show of peace and unity. That's mostly why the crowd is so big.
Imagine eating only berries and nuts for the first 30 years of your life, then someone comes along and gives you a steak. That's what it was like for them. The only way they could hear american music was through smuggled media. Imagine being a fan and actually getting to see them performing in your Capitol.
@@SaintPhoenixxI wonder if anyone from that crowd went to the Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989 and saw Bon Jovi ,Ozzy Osbourne,Scorpions,Cinderella and Motley Crue
There's a reason Metallica, a band formed in 1981 has endured in popularity (to a degree) to this day. That's incredibly rare for a Heavy Metal band. So many teenage boys took up the electric guitar because of this one band.
@StacyRPG so great you reacted to this! The first Intro in this video before Enter the Sandman - Is called Ecstacy of Gold. It is originally from a Western movie w Clint Eastwood called The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, directed by Sergio Leone, music written by Ennio Moricone. The next step is to watch the Danish National Symphony Orechestra rendition of "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly/ Ecstacy of Gold". DNSO has over 147 Million views on this one! Observe how an orchestra and choir of ~ 70 people put this sound together - No words are really sung here, just human utterances like ahhs, and hard consonant sounds at times, evoking EMOTION with the voices, the strings, the brass, the drums, the English horn, the electric guitar and bass, the piano, an ocharina ... Not a typical orchestra ensemble - but it gets me emotional every time and I bet you will get emotional too!

After exploring more of their songs and getting a broader feel for their material I think you should watch the concert they did with the San Francisco Symphony. It was recorded and released as an album titled 'S&M'. That's Symphony and Metallica but has an obvious double entendre.
Thankyou
That's awesome! I knew some of this stuff but to hear it from someone who was that close is incredible. 3 miles away and 96db? That's insane! I am surprised that only 126K people had hearing loss. I'm willing to bet they were all those people I the front and anyone in the vicinity of those speakers you spoke of. Is there a complete video of this concert? This is the only one I've ever seen Id love to see more of the entire show

That was a great story. Thanks for sharing all the details. You should have a lot more thumbs up. :)
Fantastic. 😎👍
Magnificent, my friend

It'll never be repeated. The fall of the wall and the former ussr. An absolute celebration.
At that moment Putin was already planning the KGB take-over and buying

It'll be repeated in 50 years after the US breaks free from the Communist regime that is about to take power.
it will be repeated after the fall of today's eu leadership.

My dad was at this "Monsters of Rock" Moscow '91 edition (I was 5 months old) and he arrived home only 3 days later because of police. Cops was arresting a lot of random people who wasn't drunk, who doesn't fight with cops ect ect. But still when my dad remembering this crazy festival, he smiles a lot)
Yeah, "Monsters of Rock" was attended by over 1.000.000 people at Tushino airfield and it was free for audience
yeah keep beleive this fathers tale for mother, where he was 3 days :))
This is not a rabbit hole. It is THE rabbit hole!
1.6 million baby. METTALICA
Iron Maiden was one of the first major rock bands to play big shows in the Communist Eastern Bloc at the time"
I saw the same tour at Long Beach California. Never forget that show. Especially when they played my favorite Maiden song.... Running Free.
Great info.
Maiden also made a concert in Sarajevo during the explosion of Yugoslavia in the 90's.
People in fact died.
@@Frag_Nasty95 could give the official source where it says that
between 50-60 people died from being trampled FYI

1.6 million people and everyone forgets that AC/DC headlined this concert
I love your reaction. I grew up listening to them, and just to see you liking the music, brings me back to my teenage years.
3:18 1.6 million russians was there 9:36 Theres a lot of bigger concerts, like Rod Stewart in Rio in 1994: 3.5 million people
Nothing more sexier than seeing a woman jamming to Metallica!!
Totally agree
You're damn right about that. This girl is so hot. It's unbelievable and so is her voice. Stacy, you're beautiful. Wish I had a girlfriend like you. Unbelievable. I like how you jam Bob. Your head gorgeous smile. That's what we do. This is a concert I've seen Metallica a million times. They never disappoint you just like AC/DC. Unbelievable jam in my car. Same shit.

This concert was definitely legendary. There will be a few people in the comments that will poop on the numbers, but the estimate was 1.5 to 1.6 million people going through the gates. Boston - Foreplay/Longtime needs to be reacted to. Quite possibly the best song from the 70's.
They stopped counting at 1.5 million people estimates go up to 3 million and 55 people died at this concert. It was free and the first time metal music was allowed in Russia. It was just after the fall of the Iron curtain in 1990.
Technically, Ozzy Osbourne (like Heavy Metal artist) played in Moscow Music Peace Festival two years earlier.
According to the ambulance station, 56 people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, of which 16 were military personnel."

1.6 million !
Heard different rumours (cannot confirm this) about how many people in the crowd got injuried due to
violent clashes between the public, the police and even military. To oversee the event,
there were 11 000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards and riot police.
Very tragic whatever the amount was. This is what was said according to the journalist report.
LOL
your logic is lacking, AC/DC was the main act, so the top number of people was at night.
no source ever reported 1.6 mil at the Metallica opening show.
you just invented those numbers or quoted someone who did.
Reality is: NOBODY counted or estimated IN PERIOD the audience at Metallica show.
I have to say that bands such as Metallica, acdc , iron maiden generally have the best musicians. And the lead singer is really good. Real music. Real bands
these were the times where music is music.... and we appreciate the entire package.. from the lyrics to the melody.. plus its METALLICA baby!!!
Hard to believe by young people these days, but at that time, before the internet, Metallica - a heavy metal band, was the biggest band in the world.

AC/DC headlined this free rock concert as the iron curtain came down. Estimated 1-2million people in the crowd.
3 bands were there, AC/DC, Metallica and Megadeth...
@@TheMrEsseg ok but Metallica said it was just them & ACDC.
