3rd wall breaking is when the characters are talking to each other specifically about whats going on in the episode, which kinda gives the audience a heads up about what's gonna happen
It’s a legit anime. The voice actors talked about it several years ago, they were given the rights to dub the anime since it didn’t do well over in Japan. The could change whatever they want as far as dialogue goes but they had to keep the story of each episode intact to some degree. The voice actors also talked about how they would essentially race each other to the voice booths to get the better lines. So I’m each episode of once character is particularly funnier than the other, it’s because that specific characters voice actor got to the booth before everyone else did and took all the funny dialogue. They characters break the 4th wall a lot since the story for each episode is pretty predictable so they just have the characters call it out and make fun of it. That’s also why some of the unimportant characters, ie the bus driver or the board mover are just called by their jobs. Like: “You’re not paid to stand around “I’m not paid at all.” “Whatever, just fill the hole, hole filler.” “Jackass.” The American studio essentially took one of the worst performing animes (in Japan) and made it into one of the best animes of all time.
The whole "it didn't do well in japan" thing has been debunked countless times, it did quite well in fact and how it did had nothing to do with the freedom this dub received lol
Breaking the Third wall is when a character acknowledges directly or indirectly that they are in a movie, tv show, comic book, book. (Ex: a manga character says “This situation is insane! It's not like we're in a manga or something!) Breaking the fourth wall directly references the audience. there you go : )
Update, this is what I could find hope it makes sense: Breaking the First wall is where a charcter acknowledges they, or other characters, are engaged in a literary device (ex: a character forgets their cell phone at home every episode of a tv show leading to comical circumstances. Character: Is anyone else tired of this running gag?). Breaking the Second wall is when a character acknowledges a story like structure or plot to their life or to the day. I dont know if that includes the character knowingly copying something they say they saw in tv, but it does include acknowledging that you’ve seen “this plot” (that’s happening to them) in tv/media. Like if a character says he can easily runa 1000m run in record time, then someone on the track team gets hurt and now they are asked to stand in. Character: This happened in a show i saw… now if only i could remember how they resolved it… (I found all the answers In Quora btw)
So for anyone who doesn't know: Ghost Stories did so poorly in Japan that the Japanese team told the American team to just do whatever they wanted to do with the dub, because they were desperate just to break even after the sales tanked. Also, the cat can speak because it’s possessed by a demon which is then trapped inside it in the very first episode. It's absolutely the official dub. The Japanese version was so bad and performed so poorly they just told the English voice actors to do whatever they wanted
Just wanted to comment since you guys were talking about it at some point in the video: Breaking the third wall is actually a completely different device from breaking the fourth wall. The fourth wall is broken when a character in a work, be it a movie, play, tv show, or book, communicates directly with the audience, acknowledges the audience as a real thing, etc. For example, Zach from Saved By the Bell does this a lot. The THIRD wall is broken when a character in a work realizes that they are a fictional character. So the character did in fact break the third wall, and not the fourth. A good example of a character that regularly breaks the third wall (and also the fourth) is Deadpool. That does beg the question about the first and second walls, though.
To finish what the crying woman was saying that was cut out: Shirotabi, I know now that it could never work between us. Not because because you are a rabbit--- but because you're black. " Lady had a full on relationship with a bunny. Kinda fucked up but it comes out of nowhere.
This is really the actually dub and some of the other jokes are just great. They also meantion the insurance company geico i think in the last episode.
I still can't get over the fact that I watched this dub unknowingly and unironically when I was like 10/11 years old. I was sooo confused at all the sexual jokes loool. I sometimes still see my immature and confused old youtube acc comments on the episodes still up on UA-cam
I can promise you this is 100 percent real 😂 the dub actors basically abridged the whole show lol. Hillary, Greg, Chris, and Monica are hilarious when given free reign lol
To sum up why this anime dub exists, the anime apparently didn't do well in Japan and when it was licensed for a dub to America the studio basically told the dubbing studio: "Do whatever you want, nobody's really interested". So the dubbers basically went: "How messed up can we make this dub?"
Definitely watch. Its easily one of the better underrated gems amongst all the anime out there. English dub saved this show since it didnt do too well in japan when it initially aired. The English voice actors were basically given unlimited freedom with their lines, as long as the overall story stays intact. Thats why youll hear and see a ton of hilarious real world references by the characters. Its that good man lol.
This is indeed a real anime, and this is infact the real dub !! The voice actors were basically told to just to wing it and do what they could to make the show popular.
3rd wall is when characters talk to each other about happening in the show/movie. 4th wall is when characters either talks directly to the audience or they use items they normally shouldnt be able to see like using a health bar as a weapon in a fighting game
I believe the story behind this one is when the studio producing it in America realized it was pretty trash, they asked their voice actors to do something, *anything* to make it more interesting. So they did. In a way, you could make an argument that this was the very first anime abridged series.

The line cut off at the end is "But they're not getting their peepees waxed, are they?" This dub, man...
ah the "Abridge dub" before the "Abridge dubs" also the only official "Abridge dub" I know of
Just wanted to comment since you guys were talking about it at some point in the video:
Breaking the third wall is actually a completely different device from breaking the fourth wall.
To fix up the rumours. It wasn’t a flop in Japan. They just were worried how western audiences would like it
I thought it didn’t make money in Japan and the dub is what actually made the studio a bit of money
To finish what the crying woman was saying that was cut out:
Shirotabi, I know now that it could never work between us. Not because because you are a rabbit--- but because you're black. " Lady had a full on relationship with a bunny.
Kinda fucked up but it comes out of nowhere.
Glad they fixed the audio lol
The forth wall is looking directly at the camera while telling people what it is.
This is really the actually dub and some of the other jokes are just great.
They also meantion the insurance company geico i think in the last episode.
I replayed that look out Ted part so many times, the exaggerated superhero voice makes it so funny
I think my most favorite dub anime quotes of all time are "she's a ghost AND a bitch" and "ahahwhehehey"
The reason its so wild is because the studio responsible for the dub were given full control of the script.
I still can't get over the fact that I watched this dub unknowingly and unironically when I was like 10/11 years old. I was sooo confused at all the sexual jokes loool.
I sometimes still see my immature and confused old youtube acc comments on the episodes still up on UA-cam
Brooo, i just realized every one of these voice actors were also in Full Metal Panic. I’m crying
When I hear these voice actors the anime that come to mind are Fairy tail, Clannad, and the world god only knows
This is anime dub was a blessing
The voice actors wrote the script themselves and just did whatever they did 😭
I can promise you this is 100 percent real 😂 the dub actors basically abridged the whole show lol. Hillary, Greg, Chris, and Monica are hilarious when given free reign lol
Oh you better *_BELIEVE_* this dub is real 🤣🤣🤣
"Specially with the Omarion going around"
Me: Somebody finna get touched
These one liners are so much funnier with the context of the whole episode
19:00 keichiro said “these pajamas are gay”
Bulma VA is the va for Momoko the one who always says Jesus
Monica was on something back then
There’s actually a lot of recognizable voices in this anime. The one voicing the Jewish boy is Greg Ayres.
All these ghosts are coming back to life because Hole Filling, Board Movers are clearing out a forest that the ghosts were spiritually resting in.
You guys should react now to the devilman dub...another masterpiece
The fact that I watched this dubbed and still think this sounds way too much like an abridged series. Yet I’m here for all of it 😂😂😂
they said third wall cus they’re all drawn in 2d lol
5:42 He sounded real interested in that offer 💀
at the computer part the bot says "sounds ireh man" he was speaking jamaican
😀😀
To sum up why this anime dub exists, the anime apparently didn't do well in Japan and when it was licensed for a dub to America the studio basically told the dubbing studio: "Do whatever you want, nobody's really interested".
So the dubbers basically went: "How messed up can we make this dub?"
man ghost stories my favorite dub hands down lol remember when i first watched this years ago. had me cryin
I never heard of this but I gotta watch this now. after heavens lost property that show funny asf too
Definitely watch.
This dub is free to do what it wants, like “screw the script! Let’s have some fun with this!”
*saying random words in the mic*
When I binged watched this I had to pause and rewind every 30 seconds or so from laughing and missing quips and such
Thx bro! Funny ass show in the 90s! Someone should reinvent this concept lol 😆
"Ain't no way this is real" Me: *Waiting for them to watch the anime to see it's 100% real*
This is 100% real the OG gag dub anime before dragon ball abridged 😂
It is real. I was exposed to it back in 2007 and it was the wildest binge watch ever
Nah I heard the studio told the cast they could say whatever they wanted as long as it’s with the story so this is 100% real lmao 😂
This is indeed a real anime, and this is infact the real dub !! The voice actors were basically told to just to wing it and do what they could to make the show popular.
It is the official dub. It kinda spawned the 2010s anime abridged phase. Never let the VAs run wild with recordings. They will go feral.
I’m actually pressed that they didn’t show the whole rabbit scene that scene alone makes the anime a must watch
Yeah it’s definitely louder I was wondering why it was quiet thought my phone was trippin
