Fun Fact: the Person the made the manga actually told the voice actors for both Japanese and English to just say whatever they want for the animation but to make it sound like it has some sense.
It had to hit key plot points but beyond that go wild.
On the DVD the Japanese(English subbed) is a regular horror show, but it did so poorly in Japan that when ADV Films got it they told them to make whatever for the English dub and try to make back some of the money. @@Skyte100 I haven't heard the original Japanese was not a direct reading, is there a source for this. (would be cool to know either way)

😂 I can't believe this is the actual official dub. I had to check Crunchyroll a while back just to be sure. The story behind it being the anime didn't sell well in Japan so they told the team that was dubbing in the US to do "whatever" to make it sell as long as they don't change the names of ghosts.
Note: This is the story that ADV told. This is NOT the actual truth. That's why I said "the story." It did fine in Japan not with the original dub team is the actual truth just not the story that was originally told.

Please stop spreading these rumors, the anime didn't bomb in Japan, it actually did pretty great. What did bomb for this anime was it's previous dub in the U.S(which aired on channels like Cartoon Network). While it's dialogue stayed true to the original, the voice acting was pretty mediocre when compared to other dubbed kids anime like "Pokemon" and "Yu Gi Oh", forcing them to cancel their dub less than halfway through. Which is why they handed the responsibility of dubbing it over to Steven Foster and his team, asking that they do whatever they can to make it popular, as long as they stayed true to the original story.

Fun Fact: You can tell if someone is a respectable anime watcher or one you want nothing to do depending on their stance on Ghost Stories. If they hate it and claim it's offensive and shouldnt exist, then you want nothing to do with them
I normally don’t like humor like this, but even I find this show hilarious. The jokes don’t feel like they reflect the voice actors’ own views. It was purely just them fucking around.
The series is hilarious. Especially when you learn each personality and they keep it rolling through out the series. It’s the most random yet unrandom thing every😂😂😂

when this show was given to the studio to play with it wasn't fairing in Japan as well so they were like "yeah you can go nuts with the dub." and go nuts they did. making the purple hair chick a born again evangelical was just chef's kiss.
I think the dubs are even funnier after seeing the subs from the original Japanese... cause its like watching an abridged series.

Actually fun fact this is the actual American version yeah the director's they didn't really give them much Direction all ABC told them was this make up your own lines as long as it stays closer than narrative that's just basically the best way to explain it that's literally what they said that's actually what they did

The video game the characters are playing is Dark Cloud for the PS2. It was supposed to be Sony’s answer to The Legend of Zelda, but only had 2 games, unfortunately. Fun games, although the weapon durability and building mechanics in the first one were…. Really frustrating. Long story short, you break your weapons, they disappear forever, and when you’ve been building up your weapons into stronger ones, it gets worse to have to start over from scratch, afterwards.
Something like this dub will probably never happen again. I'm so glad it exists. Everyone gets hit, and it's mostly funny.

So, there's a lot of misinformation surrounding this official dub. But, long story short, despite popular belief, they didn't really have the green light to do whatever they wanted. That's the guy who was in charge of the dub twisting the words of the people who gave him the dubbing rights.
Also, the show was not a flop in Japan. It was actually insanely successful. As in, according to statistics, it was out performing DRAGON BALL Z of all things, which is massive in of itself, and i think even POKEMON, or at least it was close to Pokemon. Not entirely sure on the Pokemon thing since I'm taking a lot of this from a video by MercuryFalcon titled "The TRUTH About the Ghost Stories Dub!" I haven't watched it in over a year so my memory is shotty, so feel free to go watch it for yourselves and correct me if I got that Pokemon part wrong.
Also, the guy in charge of the dubbing has done this sort of thing with multiple anime, not just Ghost Stories. He literally has his own website where he brags about it, it's kinda crazy he's even allowed to keep working in the industry.

This Anime did so poorly in Japan that when they licensed it to America they did not care about what the company that they sold the rights to did with it. Normally Japanese animation companies are strict with their properties, and will not allow any major changes, but this one they did not care. The voice actors saw how bad the dialogue for the original script was, and asked if they could do whatever they wanted to, and they were given the green light. The voice actors would go in to do their lines and it became a running joke to say the most outrageous and offensive things to shock and get the other voice actors to try and outdo them. The humor is very much of the time it was made, and they would get canceled today if they tried it. I grew up when this type of humor was common and still find it funny. But I feel embarrassed that I find it funny and would probably be one of those people to say it is too much nowadays. But if you can find a subtitled version of the original Japanese version you would understand why the voice actor did not want to do the original script.
This is the only localized dub I support when it’s stupid like an abridge from the get go and not meant to be a serious translation thats when you say whatever you want. or Yugioh GX wihich was as close to the stupid of an abridgeas you get without being one though I enjoyed it not as much as Yugioh the abridge though.
