My suggestion, if you prefer a straight clean edge like that instead of natural, is to set it up on a table saw with the blade set at about 60 deg saw it off and then sand it smooth. I am not sure why you would go to all that dirt, dust and trouble to get a uniform edge.

I'm doing my own live edge slabs and was hoping I'd find a less dusty way of removing bark other than the wire brush on an angle grinder, but that seems to be the most effective way to deal with really difficult pieces. I use a variable speed machine at about 4000 RPM, outdoors. This is definitely a project that's messy, but worthwhile.
One of the ways! Unfortunately you’re removing a lot of material so dust is almost unavoidable
@@SawdustandStuff Yeah. Wood work is inevitably dusty, but at least the dust is more forgiving compared to composites and metals.
chisel then wire brush by hand.
I use my jigsaw on bevel to get rid of the bark, following the contour of the live edge..
The peice I have already had most of the bark removed but unfortunately the remainder and the first layers of sap show sign or early rot...i think ( new to this) so my main concern has been how far do I remove it

I just watched this video. I'm new to live edge wood. I make small tables from cookies or rounds. I left the bark on them but want to start taking the bark off. so I'm working with a round surface. would you use the same tools? thanks for any input.

Seems like if you aren't going to leave the natural surface of the sapwood under the bark, you'd just rip the edge off. I want to remove the bark while leaving the hopefully un touched surface beneath.

You affected the surface under the bark. I have an edge where half the bark is already gone naturally and I want that surface all the way, but have to remove the remaining bark. I just don't want to mar that surface.

Yeah, it's just not an obvious, black and white line. There's a lit of grey area and I'm not sure how much grey I want to get into.

It is. I was confused about this too for a while. Live edge refers more to the natural shape of the slab than what's on the exterior. This is still live edge because it's not squared up to just be a plank. There are more extreme variations of live edge that are a rip cut of the intersection of branches (because I'm culinary trained, I think of this every time I slice broccoli). Loose bark like on walnut has to go if you want the piece to last. I've kept the bark on small pine pieces, but they're more decorative than they are functional furniture, and the pieces I used had the most stubborn bark I've ever seen. =)
@@user-ed5sw9fj4t I would say that its not really live edged because the process he is using with the power shaper and draw knife is not just removing the bark, its also changing the shape of the edge. Ia m not saying its unattractive, but it is losing some of the natural character of the tree. You could fake a live edge using this method and it would look about the same.
@@kesselrunheroj8497 Yepster! Just below the bark is the so called cambium layer. just a few microns thick often. if you can retain this layer you get a true natural edge with colour contrast. so rustic style with subtle techniques and tools.
Video needs some better editing as your sound cuts in and out.
