THE club vibe of the 80's. Extended version kept you on the floor for 30 minutes. What a time that was
I sweated so much!
Making sure we got our cardio for the day. 😂
Yup. Even a couple of years after this came out when I was in college, this song was played in every club. So many great memories.
I'm 50 years old. We used to go CRAZY dancing to this music when we were around 21 years old. Amazing dance club memories ❤❤❤
What??? This is from1983, I was 16 and now I'm 57...
@@oskarobit whatever. So my math is off... or they were still playing this music when I was in the club. Either way, not the point.
@@user-or1ye3iz6d
I'll try to explain your 'whatever': Hardfloor Mix (1995): ua-cam.com/video/YHp8HjkFhQc/v-deo.html.
Take some phosphorus and magnesium and dance while you can! Cheers!
I still crazy dance to this (I'm 46).
Me too!!! My club days in NY ! I was 16 or 17...1983
"Blue Monday" is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.
'nuff said.
Bc it was only available on 12 " :)
next from New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle & True Faith
I used to hurt myself dancing to True Faith
Don't sleep on late 70's/80's synth bands. Depeche Mode, New Order, Gary Numan, etc. There are some songs that rival a lot of the current electronic music. You should check out the German group Kraftwerk. There were the first electronic group to ever hit the mainstream, and some people call them the inventors of Techno (Even though the genre of actual Techno music was invented in Detroit.). Many of the biggest names in Detroit Techno are heavily inspired by Kraftwerk.
I Remember seeing Kraftwerk as a kid on U.K. BBC TV science program called "Tomorrows World" showing their experimental way of making music in the late 70's, other German forerunners i would say is Can, not for electronic music, but for their experimental hypnotic style.
Isn’t Camouflage another one? Maybe I’m mistaken.
@@jonibz1456 I'm only 40, but I'm from Detroit, so Kraftwerk has been in my arsenal for a long time. It's crazy to think they still perform with a rotating cast, and two founding members.
Depeche Mode!!! Yeeeeessss
@@carlacarla3384 I would start with Blasphemous Rumours, that song was so dark and felt like a big shift from the pop stuff
80’s dance club music! We used to dance our asses off to this song back in the day. If you want to see a mid-50’s white person drop everything and start dancing just put this song on.
New order is awesome, hopefully this will lead to Joy Division discovery!
This is one when you hop in the car, roll the windows down, turn the volume up, and get lost in the sounds.
One of the most acclaimed synth pop tracks of all time. This was created utilizing homemade synthesizers and an Oberheim DMX drum machine. They even had a scientist who helped them design a circuit that could make the sequencer and the drum machine talk to one another because that technology did not exist yet. It bridges the gap between 70s disco, 80s electronic music, house music and techno. However when I was 18, 19, 20 years old, dancing to this at the clubs, I had no idea of what any of that meant other than this was my Jam!!! ❤
I think they also used a Moog Synth for that track.
As weird as it sounds, this was the song to kick off the dancing at our reception. When the DJ turned up the volume, most everyone didn't know how to react. It was amusing. Followed by Rock Lobster. Our taste was not typical.
Sounds like an absolutely legendary wedding.
That's one wedding I'd actually want to go to! 😆👋
Epic taste
Love that you connected this to house music. These pioneering synth bands like Kraftwerk, Tubeway Army, New Order, Pet Shop Boys...helped pave the way of the evolution of techno/house/dance music.
don’t leave out front 242, bauhaus, pil and cccp
You also need to include Gary Neuman, Herbie Hancock (even though I was not into his music I understand his contribution to EDM/techno/house). Also Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby (NOT “she blinded me with science or “hyperactive” but songs like “dissidents” or “the flat earth”).
Great reaction. You’re among the smartest and most intuitive reactors out there. This song is credited with being the start of house music and the rave scene. There’s lots of synths and drum kits and the signature New Order guitar. Check out “Your Silent Face”, by New Order. Thanks
Imagine hearing this in 1983. Felt like the future, blew my tiny mind
So glad you did the longer mix. A religious experience.
yep, but this is 88 mix, not the original.
@@oskarobitIs this the version off the Substance 1987 album? I wanted that album so bad when I was a kid but it was always too expensive. My husband finally bought it on LP for me for my 50th birthday.
@@tammyford2357 The Substance version is the original 12" from 1983. 'Blue Monday 88' was remixed (the following year) by Quincy Jones and another guy.
Substance is a really great record, a compilation of all the 12' released as singles which were never on the albums.
Depeche Mode, The Smiths, New Order… what a great time listening to WLIR in NY and getting all the brand new hot music from Europe.
Me too... WLIR!
The entire Substance 1987 album is amazing!
There was so much good music in the eighties that it would be difficult for me to choose five songs that identify the decade of music. This song here would definitely be a candidate for my list because the sound is so iconic.
We were very spoiled in the 80's with good music & better yet good Dance music! Looking back on it after several decades we somehow believed that this was just "regular" music and in retrospect now it really wasn't! 👍 to one of the best Decades in Music!
Peter Hook's high octave bass lines for the win.
Hooky, one of my favorite bass players.
This entire genre of music (British Synth Pop) is a combination of dance, rock, synthesizer, and pop music sounds combined. It's really a magical combination. New Order has many, many great songs.
Many of these bands released extended and different mixes of the same song, and often ( but not always!) the extended mix was better than the original song.
this song was a game changer when it came out. was at first a bit 'underground' in the dance clubs, then it entered mainstream. whatever the case, it always packed the dance floors. probably still does!
This was the most played song on college radio in the US for the entire decade of the ‘80s.
Bro I've been doing a deep dive on all your reactions and your on of the most genuine, objective, and insightful. Truth be told, what are the top three songs your playing right now that you've discovered from a reaction that no one would expect? Much love man!
I appreciate you, that means a lot! Artic Monkeys - do I wanna know, she’s gone - hall and oats, and when it rains it pours - Luke combs are big go to songs for me right now🔥
@@shon1303 I love those three. I truly believe in rocking out every genre.
from 1983, they were on the forefront of electronica. So not odd it gives you house vibes.
One thing you should know is that this song was a huge feat of programming. With the technology at the time, especially the limited storage space, they would have to switch out disks at certain points. With digital technology it's so easy to forget.
Truly one of the greatest songs ever. And it's still hugely influential.
The lead singer from Joy Division committed suicide in 1983 (check out their song 'Love will tear us apart'). Instead of breaking up, the other band members formed New Order and carried on writing music. This was a huge hit and the band helped fund a nightclub in Manchester, England called 'the Hacienda'. The iconic nightclub helped spawn many different bands and acts including Happy Mondays, 808 state and The Stone Roses. All huge UK bands, many of them groundbreaking. A young glass collector at this nightclub took inspiration and formed a band with his brother. The young man was called Noel Gallagher and he formed Oasis.
There is a little known independent film which tells the story of Joy Division and the Hacienda nightclub and its record label. It is called 24 hour party people.
This could be a massive rabbit hole for you if you wish to explore some real gritty UK bands of the late 80's and in to the 90s.
Enjoy.
Lulu’s back in town
Ian Curtis passed away on 18th May 1980. Just before Joy Division were due to commence a U.S. tour. Always remember it as it’s the same date/ month as my daughter’s birthday.
Hey Shon, so glad you enjoyed this group. They're basically an English synth-pop band formed in 1980. Some of their tracks such as this song "Blue Monday (1983) and "Temptation (1982) demonstrate a blending of two genres rock and dance together. Here's the song "Temptation to give a listen, if interested. "New Order - Temptation (Official Music Video) [HD Upgrade]" (by the channel; New Order) It was fun rocking with you and thanks for sharing.
Information Society "RUNNING" is amazing!!! ❤❤❤
I saw Information Society live in 1992. I can't lie it was one of the best shows I have ever seen.
@@ICTS22I can only imagine ❤
they really were a great concert. i saw them around then on spring break in destin fl. it was a lot or roller skating and playing air drums.
@@billmittenzwey3021 They didn't do the roller skates because the stage was too small. They did another thing were they put on hazmat suit and ran into the crowd with smoke emitting devices. It was a crazy show. They are playing in my town this summer and I want to go see them even though I know that they are past their prime.
Shon-please check out a song by The Cure. ANY song. IMO they’re one of the best bands ever.
Yeah they have so many great songs, where do you start?
@@jonibz1456 A Forest would be my choice. It’s from early in their career and it’s SO GOOD!
@@reddwarf3069 yeah good start and work onwards from there, but then again their last album was epic.
Not after 1986, please.
@@niekoohoek64 What do you mean? Disintegration was an amazing album, and that was released in 89
Part of their unique sound is bass guitar player Peter Hook playing the bass guitar like a solo guitarist, where bass guitar sounds are more central to the tracks, rather than heard softly in the background as with most other music.
Ahh, bringing me back to my clubbing days. Danced my ass off. 😂
a MAASIVE tune here in the UK at the time, still a banger even after all these years
The first time I heard this we were at a bar affectionately known as the "vampire" bar, just based on how people dressed and their clientele. Brings back so many great memories! 💜
New Order and the Smiths. My two favorite 80s bands. I still listen to them by the whole album, like it used to be.
This was literally the birth of techno and house music. The 80s, I loved it!!!
Famous band still kicking around today. Huge number of hits - iconic, and with good reason. Try "CRYSTAL" From them which spawned the band THE KILLERS from Las Vegas.
🇬🇧 One of THE best songs from the 80s, I mean.... It is I-fkin-CONIC..... LOVE IT. What you are hearing are Synthesises (not drums) 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I still love dancing to the song
This was a new-wave techno combo. Major in the dance clubs back then. ❤
This song literally stimulates every part of my brain. Truly a masterpiece. Great content, subscribed!
Bought this in 1983 and still listening to this amazing tune to this day.
This is the granddaddy of house music. House wouldn't exist except for building on these pioneers
What a great reaction from somebody who knows good music when he hears it.
The 80s were awesome! It had a level of coolness and passion that seems to be lost today.
Yes, they were Pioneers of house music and complete innovators of the sound. A slightly different lineup of the band in 1991 was called Electronic, and their big hit was called.Get the Message. Be sure to check out the official video.
Classic!! 💯😎💯😎💯
The drummer's name is Stephen Morris and this is at least a decade before House.
A violin...wwoow early synths had a job of doing any instrument accurately That made me smile
Joy Division is a MUST.
New Order was formed by Joy Division after Ian Curtis passed (Joy Division lead singer)
Your silent face by New Order is a must!
The iconic bassline and drum patterns were crafted using cutting-edge synthesizers and drum machines, setting a new standard for electronic music production. In fact, the production cost of “Blue Monday” was so high that the band reportedly lost money on every copy sold due to the intricacies of its packaging.
Their song "Regret" is maximum nostalgia for me, I have loved that song for decades. Am listening to it again as I write this, damn, it's been too long. It came much later, released 1993. This band was fantastically creative, one of the trend setters back in their early days.
Classic 808!!!
This was meant to be the best selling single of all time, i don't think it made them any money though due to the cost of the original 12inch sleeve that looked like a early computer floppy disk. The bassist was Peter Hook who gave that distinctive sound. New Order was originally a band called Joy Division, that change happened after Joy Divisions singer Ian Curtis took his own life. Joy Division "Love will tear us apart." or "She's Lost Control" is worth checking out.
True Faith by these guys is incredible!
My babies were raised with this…along with everything else! 😹 But I used to dance with my husband in clubs in SF back in the day…so reminiscent! 😽💋🎶
As far as a breakdown, there is a vid on the Toob where a group plays this song on instruments available in the 1930s. Bands name is Orkestra Obsolete….
So glad you had such an affinity for this one - wow wow wow, I'm 52 now, got my first fake ID at 14 and was up to the clubs at Syracuse University, absolutely going wild on the dance floor to this one. You, see, we Gen Xer's were raised on disco, which was yanked away from us for a time, and this track smashed through the wall of discontent and made it cool to like electronica again. This track was definitely a major influencer for future house music producers.
52, this was the song everyone went crazy too on the dance floor. Great memories💋❤❤❤
If the crowd was flat the DJ would crank up Blue Monday and the vibe instantly exploded. 😎😎😎
This song always packed the dance floor. Just find your spot, catch the poppers on their way by, get lost in it and dance baby, dance!
Good one!
New Order have a lot of fantastic songs. Like: Run, Vanishing Point, Temptation, Ceremony, Your Silent Face
Ahhh........The good old days at the dance clubs!! What an amazing time in the late 80's!!
Next up.......'Blizzard Love Triangle'!
And you should react to Front 242 'Head Hunter'!!!
This and Being Boiled by The Human League 13” version, absolute bangers! Dance music went deep in the 80s ❤
Packed dance floors is what happened when this song was played. Not a butt left in the seats. Check out Orchestral Manoevres In the Dark (OMD for short) or Yazoo.
Almost 40 years old and still....you just can't keep still. In '83 this was like it came from outer space, soooo huge and unique. Enjoy!
years ago I read about this was about the WWII in a scenario like "Operation Overlord" (Normandy). In that context a lot of the lines in the song makes more sense.
And yeah, there are real drums because New Order is the band formed after Ian Curtis (Joy Division) cometed suicide: guitar, bass, drums and synths.
This is the best selling 12" single in history but they almost lose money because the cover was real expensive: it was a black sleeve with perforations on it as it was a floppy disk and a silver inner sleeve. The cover has no band name or title on it, only a couple of stripes with a colour code.
Bernard Sumner (guitarist, singer and lead composer) buy the pieces to build his own synthesizer! Electronica was a brat!
More trivia: the classical kick drum is inspired by Donna Summer's "Our Love": the voices like a choir is from "Uranium" by Kraftwerk: the bass lines are from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for "For A Few Dollars More": took things from "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester and "Dirty Talk" by Klein + M.B.O.
BTW this was a double sided single: Blue Monday / The Beach, wich basically was quite the same, but instrumental.
There’s a lot that went into this, which I think you’re picking up on in terms of how it builds. The drum track (which took several days to program) was inspired by an old Donna Summer track and some Italian disco, the twangy bass is like music from a spaghetti western (Ennio Morricone) and the choir sound is a sample from “Uranium” by Kraftwerk.
It's safe to say today that this song is epic.
Not a bottom left on the seat when this started to play!
Have a listen to Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Joy Division morphed into New Order after the singer killed himself.
Basically Joy Divisions guitarist became the Singer in New Order along with the other members.
Joy Division who were classed as New Wave Punk in the late 70s, also experimented with synthesisers and New Order just took that one step further.
Mid 80s. My club days! ❤❤❤
this style of music is termed ''synth pop'' loads of great artist to look into >>> Yazoo, Talk Talk, Depeche Mode, OMD , Duran Duran, The Human League, Eurythmics, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Visage and more !!!!!!
I remember when this came out and my older sister got it! It blew me away. I was like 6 and totally changed!
You mentioned at the beginning of the song violins, it was actually a sample of monks chanting; amazing! There is a UA-cam channel, Produce Like a Pro, that breaks down the recording of this song. Check out: Songs That Changed Music: New Order- Blue Monday. It's fascinating. New Order ruled the dance floor in the alternative music dance clubs in the 80's. Other must hears to check out: Thieves Like Us, Bizarre Love Triangle (extended mix), True Faith (extended mix), Touched By the Hand of God (extended mix), Subculture (extended mix), Regret (Fire Island Mix), Perfect Kiss (extended Mix), Shellshock (extended mix)... I can go on and on. Their dance/extended mixes are incredible, sonically jaw dropping!
Check out a movie called 24 Hour Party People. Its is loosely based Factory Records and the bands like New Order who were signed to Factory. The original sleeve was a floppy disk...and had to be die cut. They sold each copy at a loss. Over time this is biggest selling 12" single of its time in the UK. This single has sold over 1 million copies. The first time it was released it sold 700K copies back in 1983. This song would bring everyone with a pulse to dance for 7 insane minutes. Amazing times! Listen to the Beach---if you like instrumentals!
Check out Depeche Mode...Enjoy the Silence or Never Let Me Down Again❤
After visiting the 80's synth vibe i hope you jam some NIN. Pretty Hate Machine is the perfect blend of 80's-90's sound
This will always be a banger lol!❤❤
Check out Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail. Two bands from the same era.
Two bands from the same group: Bauhaus. Neither one can compete with Bauhaus. Peter Murphy is the missing ingredient. I have been lucky enough to see Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy live in concert. I am huge fans of all. But Bauhaus and Peter Murphy solo were epic compared to the Daniel Ash/Kevin Haskins spin offs. I might be a bit biased because Peter Murphy has the most amazing cheekbones ever given to a man (and that is my kryptonite) but I still stand behind what my ears/brain hear 😊
With a beat so straight forward and out front, even those with no rhythm could feel it. It definitely got a lot people moving in the late 80s.
The entire album "1987/Substance" was pretty sic.
I was a cheerleader when this song came out. We had an awesome routine, when the music goes Boom 5x (1:43) the last crash was a toss to a flip. Wish I had a video of it, but that was 40 years ago.
You did as well? what school did you go to.. we had a cheer routine as well..
@@Loveduff Central Florida
I loved dancing to this song at the Palladium in Vegas 🔥🔥
Play it and they will dance 🕺💃
Still gets me racing to the dancefloor
*1980s New Wave, Babyyyyyyy!!!!!* 😎
This song and a friend introduced me to a synth/metal/grunge (I think) band from the 90's that covered this called Orgy...definitely check out this song, Opticon, Fiction, Dissention, or Eva...Vapor Transmission was the name of their best selling album IIRC...it's very sci-fi/cyberpunk stuff...
If you like this mix, check..
(Band) Dead or Alive (1985)
(Tune) You Spin Me Around Like A Record.
Many times played same set list as New Order.
So somewhat spooky story about this song and me, just for the funzies.
I like to play around with magick and occult stuff (kinda how some people ghost hunt as a hobby).
Well i did a ritual once to essentially create my own demon to work with. After about a week, i decided the safest thing was to do the ritual to destroy it.
On the day i decided i was gonna do this, i got in my car to go to work (middle of the night as i worled night shift) and this some came on, start to finish.
It was the most out of place thing, as every other song that night was like modern pop-rock.
It was the most surreal, christine-like experience I've ever had. It was like the thing was trying to guilt me, and tbh it kinda worked.
Wonderful reaction.
My favorite by New Order is “the perfect kiss”. The frog noise still intrigs me 😀
Maybe the biggest club banger of the 80s
True Faith!!!!!!!!!!
Imagine how this felt in 83 when nothing like it had been heard before 🤯
I love this song we had a cheerleading routine to this song. Used to be with the Band Joy Division. The lead singer died of a serious seizure..he had many many
Ian Curtis sadly took his own life 💔
@@karenglenn6707
We weren't told that growing up. Said he literally had a huge seizure
If you like the sound of this track, check out th band Depeche Mode best of this genre a few masterpieces of theirs- "Strange Love" "Get The balance right" "People are people" "Enjoy the Silence" side note they are still making music today so they definitely have evolved.
You are reacting to some epic, epic music. I really enjoy your takes. Keep going on, friend 🙏🙏🙏
I always thought the song was about abuse, not necessarily drug abuse, but perhaps. Anyhow this song is amazing, You shoukd also check out Gary Numan, specifically the song Are Friends Electric(Tubeway Army) or M.E
I like your analysis of such a great song. Well done you to appreciate a track from my yoof.
The best song to come out of the 80s.
Gen X music is the best. This song is a challenge to dance or dance roller skate too. Fast, half beats and body isolation moves. Very intense. Song brings back memories
That guitar string you're hearing is from a Clint Eastwood movie
Their song that was about drug addiction was called "Morning Sun". I definitely would love to see your reaction to the video. I won't say why so I don't spoil it, but it is definitely something to see.
