This song is 40 years old and could have been released yesterday... Truly timeless! Others to check out by them: Love Comes Quickly You were always on my mind Scandal Opportunities Domino Dancing What have I done to deserve this In the Night
@@marinamartinez6886 I used to live in London and would walk around with this song on my iPod. You wouldn't believe how well it worked - sometimes on a tired morning I mistakenly thought some of the sounds were genuinely coming from around me (the car noises, the footsteps, even those little saxophone blasts sound like the noise of buskers).
As a 14 year old boy I can not tell you how much I loathed this song.. which, like many top40 hits, seemed to play every 10 minutes everywhere you went.. but as a 52 year old man I can appreciate its artistry and greatness. Like many 80s songs it's pretty dazzling in retrospect.
Pet Shop Boys are brilliant. This was their first single in The States and it blew everyone away. They are still together and putting out music, their newest album came out last month. Other songs to check out: What Have I Done to Deserve This, It's a Sin, Love Comes Quickly (extended version), Love Etc., Opportunities, Domino Dancing, It's Alright (extended mix), Was That What It Was, Paninaro.... I can go on and on. Amazing music!
So COOL, right? You would LOVE the Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield on this song- "What Have I Done To Deserve This?". It was made not too long before she died. As always- you're amazing with your analysis ! Fabulous!
🇬🇧 PSB were HUGE in 80s, and still touring now. They have so many hits for you to check out. "Its A Sin" "Domino Dancing" "What Have I Done To Deserve This" & lots more. Enjoy. 🎼👍
I believe "Opportunities" was their second hit, and it was massive. Check it out, the 8 minute extended version is BOMB. These guys collaborated with New Order to create a new band called "Electronic" and a great example song from them is titled "Getting Away With It." Great stuff.
LOVE Pet Shop Boys and also, the bands: "New Order" song "BLUE MONDAY"; and the band: Information Society, songs: "RUNNING"❤ (which is my FAVORITE of all these songs) and "I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING" remind me of them. They are also really good. 🙌
This song reminds me of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl." Same idea, "east end boys (east end is rough) and west end girls (higher class)." If you ever visit London, you'll know what part of town to hang out in.
The new wave English invasion of the 80's, one of those bands was The Pet Shop Boys they were one of my favorites.❤ They had numerous hits check out " What did I do to deserve this" featuring Dusty Springfield another good one is "I'ts a Sin". Peace ✌️ Gary 😊

This song is in my top 5 of classic New Wave songs along with "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "You Spin Me 'Round" by Dead or Alive, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" By Culture Club and "Don't You Want Me Baby?" by The Human League.
Yes they are British duo and still successful. They have just released their 15th album which is getting rave reviews. You should react to their epic song 'It's a sin'!
So glad to see you digging this! I'm an avowed headbanger, but thanks to Depeche Mode, I minor in the keyboards, too, and PSB always delivers groovy tunes. "It's a Sin" seconded. It's an awesome track.
Oh, my, what a rabbit hole you've stumbled into. This band/group was super huge during the 80's and 90's, mostly on the dance and pop charts. They had several big hits, but my favorite, lyrically, is the song "Rent".

"Being Boring" is a fantastic maximum nostalgia song to check out. One of my faves of theirs. As for another massively popular band from the same era, check out OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark) and their song "Walking On The Milky Way".
Six double tequila shot per night and I was ready to partaaay! Not seven - the seventh one made me throw up! Now I don't drink at all, but the eighties were my time.
The West End is the area where you go out in London. It's packed full of restaurants, theatres, clubs and so on. They also talk about a Dive Bar. This was actually real and was a basement bar underneath the Kings Head pub in Chinatown near Leicester Square that I used to go to back in the 80's.
Thank you for reviewing this masterpiece ! I follow PSB since 1993 and this is one of their best songs ever! Glad you liked it! Keep reviewing good stuff !
I think the word you were looking for is "ethereal" which perfectly describes this song. I was in college when it came out and it's still one of my favorites.
i don't know for a fact, but i have heard that it's Grace Jones doing the background vocal. god, can it really be 40 years ago?? can you imagine the London clubs in the 80's, with all the great alt/new wave music??
Try to imagine how different and ground-breaking this was in 1985, especially in the US! I think it was released a year earlier in the UK, but that was often the case with new music back then. A lot of the sounds you hear, including that "aaahhhh" vocal sound, was done by using a Emulator II, a sampling instrument which was fairly new at the time. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF
One of the best debut albums of all time. Yeah, I said it! Opportunities, Suburbia, Love Comes Quickly. They came out the gate running. Their first 5 albums (including the remix album Disco) are pretty much perfect. They just released a new album last week, too. But this song was their breakthrough hit after a couple of false starts. So cool.
Fantastic!!! Great song and great reaction. You are on such a journey and I love that you are so open to so many songs and artists that you have never heard of :) Keep enjoying the 80s and 90s because they rocked the first time through and I am loving seeing them now through your reactions...

Good discussion of the song with some subtle thoughts on the lyrics and the music! The song is about the conditions in London in the 1980s. The West End and the East End are different parts of London. The rich live in the West End, the poor in the East End. And due to the poor political conditions in England and London at this time, conditions were very tense with a high level of crime in the East End in particular. The focus here is on the class differences between the rich and the poor and the associated inner-city pressure. The rich wanted nothing to do with the poor. The rich didn't want to have anything to do with the poor. And the poor wanted a share of the wealth of the rich. At that time in London, starting in the East End, there were a lot of criminal cases, including deaths. That was new and frightening in European cities at the time, especially in London. In the USA, that had been happening in big cities for a long time, it was normal there. In this respect, if you want to understand the lyrics of the song properly, you have to know the conditions at these time, otherwise the whole song and the video will not make sense... You have to know that when you talk about the song and its video, I think. I'm from Germany, I know those times in England and in other European countries. And the music of the 1980s anyway, I grew up with it as a teen and a twen!!
This was the #1 song on the US top 40 charts on my 14th birthday. West End girls are the wealthy girls, and the East end boys are the working class/tough guys. Such a great song. PSB have a huge catalogue of music. But if you like the electronica stuff, need to go to the real gods of the genre--Depeche Mode. Try out Strangelove 87.
