  • In recent years, Asian tiger mosquitoes have taken a ride on cargo ships and planes, settling across the globe. The insects can survive cold and hot temperatures, as well as wet and dry climates. Some are harmless but others carry dangerous diseases. France is monitoring their expansion and impact on public health, a year before it hosts the Olympic Games. Our Science reporter Shirli Sitbon looks at what makes tiger mosquitoes different.

They spread in the Washington DC area about 20 years ago. I some places you could suddenly get 20 bites in 5 minutes in your garden in the middle of the day. Luckily biological pesticides easily take care of the larvae without toxicity.

Aedes aegypti ... these have been in Sicily for quite a while but not carrying any diseases. When they do carry though, they carry pretty much everything that is nasty (yellow fever, zika, dengue, chikungunya, you name it) . Be careful about mosquitoes biting during the day, specially if they have while/black stripes (the others bite during sunrise/sunset/night). For them to carry a disease, they'd need to bite someone that has it, otherwise, like in Sicily, they're harmless.
