- Mosquitoes are attracted to me and it's likely due to my genes.

Some things we know make mosquitoes more attracted to you:
Exercising, higher metabolism, higher body temperature, more body odor, being pregnant, type O blood, infrequent bathing, lactic acid, ammonia, acetone.
There are a number of folk remedies people believe protect them from mosquito bites like drinking alcohol, eating garlic, or taking vitamin B. These do not appear to provide any benefit in lab studies and in fact drinking alcohol is associated with increased mosquito activity because it causes blood vessels near the surface of the skin to dilate.
And apparently some of your attractiveness to mosquitos is simply genetic. This may be mediated through your immune system, which is what a lot of the genes identified were associated with.

The ultimate non toxic mosquito repellant is cloves mixed in ordinary cooking oil. Olive or rapeseed oil. Mix the powdered cloves in oil, let stand for a few days, filter the clove powder out, and apply the oil. Tested and proven in Finnish midsummer with a lot of bloodthisrty mosquitoes. One got as close as one inch from my arm when it got the scent and braked and got away.
As someone who lives in Texas, thank you
Does the oil then have a strong scent of cloves to others too?

Years ago, I took my family and my brothers family on a camping trip to Fire Island one summer. Out of 8 of us all but my 2nd son Calvin was eaten alive by mosquitos. Amazing! My husband is extremely attractive to mosquitos and, to my knowledge, I have been bitten only a handful of times in my 60-plus years of life. We have frequently joked that he is much sweeter than me. Very satisfying to understand the scientific explanation.
I did 15 years in the navy and had to do a couple tours in Afghanistan. While prepping for tour I was instructed to take these pills once a day everyday for a year to keep from contracting malaria if bitten by a mosquito known as doxycycline.
What I found out about malaria was it was mostly common I. Northern Africa. I also found out that most of the people who live in Northern Africa who either have sickle cell anemia, or the trait developed this as an evolutionary defense mechanism to the microbe carried by the mosquito that’s known to cause malaria. So basically, if you have sickle cell, your blood cell shape is not round like healthy cells and instead take on the shape of a sickle, a cutting tool shaped like a crescent moon. Because the blood cell is shaped like a sickle, it isn’t as strong and takes up less surface area compared to a normal healthy blood cell and it also dies off quickly compared to round blood cells as well. The malaria virus when contracted, has a very difficult time entering and reproducing more copies of itself in sickle shaped blood cells due to the lack of rigidity and weakness of the sickled cell thereby making it damn near impossible to be infected by it.
I also learned that the hiv virus has a hard time reproducing in sickled blood cells for the same reason thus making a person with sickle cell less likely( but impossible ) to contract certain viral diseases.

Coz the mosquitoes which bite are FEMALE 😂 as said in this video 😂
I get bit less than most male people around me (with the exception being my dad, I probably got some good anti mosquito genes from there!). So it's not a catch all. Hormones can change the odours you give off I believe, however a lot of the reasons they listed (high metabolism, sweat etc) are actually generally higher in males. So females being more attractive to mosquitos is kinda counter intuitive to that.

I have read for years that by gentically modifying certain strains of mosquitos they could be rendered extinct. Sounds like a good idea whose time has come. Anybody know if that has been done? And if so, why are we still tormented by those buzzing vampires?
It's because we aren't sure yet that the extinction won't cause any unknown effect like will any animal eating mosquito be affected? To what extend? How will that affect other animals connected to it? Will we be able to handle this? Is it worth it? Are you a red head?
I am... Mosquitos love me..
When I say i’m allergic to mosquitoes some ppl say “yeah duh everyone is”. But like they don’t understand. I had two mosquito bites on my thigh when I was like 7 and it swelled up so big i couldn’t walk 💀 Same things happend on my foot, and my arm has once doubled in size from 3 😃 idk why but that’s why I freak out when ever I see one :p
My brother had the same problem, when he was younger, he would swell up so bad, once his ear swolled up so bad, my mother had to clarify, he wasn't born like that, he was just allergic to mosquito bites 🤣 he's 15 now, and he's no longer allergic, but I always found it interesting as to why he was , and for me mosquito bites would last for 2 hours minimum
Mosquitos rarely bite me and I never even get a welp or any kind of mark from it lol
Don't go to Philippines then.
I was wearing leggings one day and I went hang out with my friend in his back yard , I was the only one getting bit and the only exposure I had was my ankles , when I tell you they swelled up sooo bad they were kankles by the time I left his house . It was hard to walk , I had to put ice packs for the swelling to go away .
OMG SAME 😭i finally found someone else who's actually allergic 😭
When I visited Cuba some years ago, my sister and my friend returned home with about half a dozen of mosquito bites each. I had more than 40 bites on me, even after spraying myself with that horrible sticky and smelly insect repellant for a whole week! They even bit me under the fabric. 😫
Thanks for the sharing this is very true
“Mosquito man” *door opens* That’s a regular man😡🥺

I found after living on a boat and at the mercy of mosquitoes, what you eat makes a huge difference. I completely stopped eating bananas because I found that within an hour of eating a banana the mosquitoes would be all around me. This effect would last a couple of days, slowly waning.
Back in the day when I went backpacking, mosquitos where a problem and here is how I dealt with it including commercial chemicals that can be applied to clothing and skin.
Mosquitos are most active in the morning and at dawn.
So keeping this in mind for the evening when we would all be eating dinner and later just sitting around talking before we started our campfire for the evening.
I would not eat anything sweet for dinner because it makes your skin and breath more attractive to mosquitos.
No fruit, no candy, no hot chocolate with marshmallows, no honey, no granola bar...
I would chop up some raw garlic and swallow it down with a swig of water.
That in combination with commercial chemicals applied properly, I rarely ever got bitten whilst the guys and gals around me did.
Eat a lot of garlic then go to the woods. Insects don’t like you
Lmao you living in donkey Kong 64 huh?
Yes. Garlic is not to their taste and if you eat a lot of it not only your breath but your blood will smell like it.
But be careful. Garlic is an antibiotic.

worst experience was when i visited the Baltic Sea once in august and after just one evening i looked like i was suffering the final stages of the bubonic plague. it was so awful i didn't sleep for three days straight because of the itch and pain.
as we were sitting outside near the beach i was swarmed by those pesty mosquitoes- i had on a pair of jeans and long sleeves because i knew it and i witnessed the suckers stinging through the jeans and sleeves ...and those weren't gigantic but small malicious black nightmares. this year i was already stung 11 times when i visited a friends garden at noon! when i think of this menace i'm so happy living downtown otherwise summertime would be insufferable every year 😢
As estonian i disagree
I am not sure how attractive I am to mosquitoes, because my body doesn't react to mosquito bites. I used to think mosquitoes didn't bite me at all, until I saw one bite my ankle and I never got a bump or was itchy where I was bitten. I am glad that I don't feel bug bites but the only thing that worries me about it is possibly getting sick from a bug bite and not knowing where the infection came from, or getting misdiagnosed.
I heard wearing a face mask and shield along with some gloves while out in public offers protection against mosquitos... 🙄
I love mosquitoes, I meant they are very supportive when I do sport, like running, they encourage me to run faster when I slow down.
🤣
That's an interesting way to describe this motivation
BRAVO, nice one.
Lmao 🤣 🤣
My mom told me that the amount of sugar in your blood was what attracted mosquitoes. I got bit like crazy by them as a kid, especially, and the reactions I had were intense. Huge hard red swellings. One on my shin I scratched so much with the heel of my shoe during PE that at some point it became grossly infected. I saved it for a day when I really really wanted to stay home from school....and when I showed it to my mom and my big brother, they were appalled. It had turned green at the center, where the scab started originally, and dark red all around it. I decided it was ripe and crossed my fingers and hoped it would work so I could stay home and watch some classic musicals I was anxious to watch (back then you had to plan these things after looking through the TV guides to see what movies you were dying to see would be televised). Well, I f*cked up and had to go to emergency. But I got a whole week off from school.
Hahaha the idea of saving your medical emergency for a rainy day is just immaculate kid logic
Add b-1 or benfotiamine to yr diet.sprinkle brewers yeast on skin around pants bottoms, collar of shirt, rinse hair with vinegar, dogs coat, kids hair for lice.
My mom used to tell me the same thing, she told me I have bitter blood because I almost never get bitten
I call it appointment t.v. because if you missed the appointment you didn't get to see the show. Lol
Same here, except not the story though, my mom also told me it could be from your blood type but I’m not sure
It’s amazing how he feeds them their own blood
When I was in Girl Scouts, we went to camp and I was the mosquito magnet. I had so many bites I actually got sick. My sister and her friends counted the ones on my face …just my face and I had them all over…and I had 106 just on my face. I was so happy having moved from NY to Utah so I got no bites ..maybe two in 24 years there. My husband none! In Colorado ..I’ve been bitten a few times but my husband zero times!
God, scientists are awesome. It hurt every part of my body to see him stick his hand in that box
For the sake of science
I'm in awe actually at how dedicated this guy is to his studies of them just sticking his arm in the box to feed them. I've always had horrible reactions to mosquito bites they swell up to like 4 times bigger than most peoples and can sometimes be so bad (especially on an area likemy hand or fingers) that the appendage is practically unusable, I'm pretty sure if I stuck my arm in one of those boxes I would have to amputate it
yeah lol
@@hycoperosity5843 I would assume demographic research and product development mostly, but yeah it’s still kinda scary that they can kinda just hide the fact that you’re essentially selling your genome in exchange for a service
Probably you didn't get bitten enough. I'm basically a decoy for mosquito... When among a group of people, all mosquitoes will usually get to me. The first few years, each bite swell enormously! If I got bitten in the arm, I the swelling was like another bycept appearing! After several years of getting bitten, no only a small red bump appears.
@@s.bgaming6134a
Same thing happens to me. What I found out is that any irritation to the mosquito bite of any kind causes it to swell much more. Even if something just barely brushes up on the bite. Best thing to do is just ignore it completely and pray it goes away quick, the itchiness is the worst part for sure
3:56 The better correlation for identical twins than for fraternal twins is not striking at all.
Can you pls do an experiment if sounds have effects to mosquitos? Will it repel them or attract them? So that we can really know what is going on? Thank you.
This is a great video btw. :)

So... this still doesn't answer my gigantic mystery: As a kid, I would get literally hundreds of bites every summer. I was the most mosquito-attractive person I knew by a margin.Yet at one point, just in a year or two, very likely around puberty, I suddenly stopped being attractive and since then have consistently gotten maybe 1-2 dozen bites the entire summer.
*_How can someone's mosquito-attractiveness change like that?!_*
And no, no malaria or something like that, though that would have the opposite effect. I've never found any explanation for suddenly becoming unattractive when literally the only change was a year or two of growing up. I suspect something in puberty must have done it, it was probably around that time, but that's the only thing about the scenarios that changed.
Interesting. Very interesting.
Maybe testosterone or some other hormone altered your pheromones.
It could be because your metabolism slowed down during puberty, so less CO2 = Less mosquitoes
i did some reseaech and it is possible for metabolism to slow down during puberty, according to a study 15 year old at rest spent less 450 calories compared to when they were 10, so that could be the reason i guess

odour..
When I was a kid I was roommates with one of my cousins and he would get bitten all the time. He would wake up with multiple bites. I would have none or like just one. I think what saved me is having him in the room
Yes, I have the universal blood type that gravitates mosquitoes. Although I hadn't been annoyed by any when I first moved here while sitting out at night, here lately I had. So now I keep an insect lamp and several hat/face nets on hand if sitting out, especially at night.
Mosquito man was low key jealous that the other was more attractive 😂😂😂😂
Just what I was thinking!
There was one point where I havnt been bit for like a year my theory is it changes over your age. I'm incredibly unattractive to mosquitoes 2.5 years of not being bit or so
@@luccianoblock5127 It also has to do with chemicals your body produce.
@@luccianoblock5127 Actually, I fully agree! It may not be the main factor, but it definitely plays a part. I have no science to back this up, but I’m using personal experiences. When I was 10 and younger, I was constantly getting bit my mosquitos (like 4-5 bites every 2 hrs I was outside), but now that I’m older I rarely ever get bit. I’m sure if I did some research, I could find some reason of why that is.
After I had cancer treatment, I haven’t got bit by a mosquito. I think it’s the health of a person/chemicals
Btw those shots of mosquitoes biting are on my arm (except for the exotic species)

Love your work !
Sacrifice in the name of science!
Thanks for being a sacrificial chicken (one of the traditional blood meal donors in mosquito work).
They also love the clothes that I have worn.
I use that as a morning trap: I make a pile of my worn stuff in the corner of the bedroom at night and I just smack it in the morning with a book. Usually most escape and a few I find dead in the fabric.
I have von Willebrand's disease which is a clotting disorder (poor clotting) and I'm going to be tested for a mitochondrial disorder. I'm super attractive to mosquitoes.
I don't mind if mosquitoes bite. At least someone is attracted to me.
something* They're not people. lol
Exactly what I wanted to say
i don't mind them feeding off my blood, i DO mind their bites being itchy AF
I've been saying this for years., though sometimes I word it that 'mosquitoes are the only things that want to suck me.'

Diet is also a huge influence. This was demonstrated decades ago. In particular, taking Thiamine increases your immunity to mosquitoes and eating candy and processed foods makes you more vulnerable.
Huh. Funny. I just started taking a natural B1 supplement (allithiamine) for another reason but I noticed I could walk outside for a few minutes wearing shorts without being chased by mosquitoes & it’s been raining like crazy! If there is a mosquito in the area I’m the person targeted.
I've always been a magnet. I could not go out in the evening with bare ankles or wrist and repellent. Since discovering I have a histamine intolerance I've hardly had any bites this year. My diet has changed significantly and I'm taking anti-histamine and pro-biotics daily. The difference is incredible and I was not expecting it. I've been bitten maybe ten times this year but would normally be bitten 10 times a day. Purely anecdotal of course, but a striking difference.
