Jobs are not for citizens. The third world “asylum seekers” need to feed their families. Review the government’s own job statistics and see where the jobs are going. The sad thing is union workers keep voting for their own demise.

Workers usually get pay too. The unions stock up money to pay out during strikes. The problem with unions is that they have been undermined by politicians since Regan. See Right to Work, and At Will Employment.
That is only 1 problem with the union. The unions force feed their lifestyle on the backs of the 300 million of us that are not in their private lil club.
@@1cdmapif it weren’t for our “private lil club” you and your family wouldn’t have food on your table or be able to get your prescriptions from the pharmacy and a boat load of other stuff. The ILA has suffered for the past 4 years ever since Covid. My brothers and sisters have died to keep this world running. We’re not “force feeding” anything on anyone. Bottom line is if it weren’t for us the world is screwed. We would love to come to an agreement with USMX. They are refusing to sit down with us and talk this out. They have made BILLIONS of dollars off the sweat of longshoremen’s backs and we have seen little to none of that in return.
Unions are like the Mafia, they take your money and act like they really care about the workers. Yet they continue to get shitty deals for their workers! Companies shouldn't be making record profits while paying low unlivable wages
Mersk shipping company has broken the current contract agreement of not adding automation. They put automation in a port down south. This is why the unions have backed out of negotiation talks. They are breaking the current contract.
All usmx has to do is take out any automation in the new contract. The raise they propose is 40% over 6 years. The union wants more to fall in line with poor raises over the last contract ( 6 years). That raise amount is an easy fix. Health plan is an easy fix. Container bonuses is another negotiable fix as is retirement funding. Automation and the elimination of American jobs is NOT !!!!
Sitting here in the American Midwest, just north of Chicago, I’m wondering how this will impact not just the coasts but the interior waterways. I started seriously following this channel when the Canadians were about to go on strike to see the impact it might have on the Chicago/Calumet City port of the St. Lawrence seaway system. I found the channel around the time of the Suez Canal blockage and started watching almost daily since the Dali/Frances Scott Key Bridge collapse. It’s amazing the impact global shipping has on our lives even if we aren’t always aware of the factors at play. I appreciate Sal explaining this industry, its past, present and potential future in impacts on our daily lives. My question: with East Coast shipping at a standstill, how will goods move to the interior of the US? I’m assuming with the port of NY closed containers won’t be offloaded to smaller ships that can travel through the St. Lawrence Seaway system and since New Orleans also part of the ILA strike the Mississippi will have the same issue. Trucking from the West coast won’t be at scale. Budgets are already tight for the upcoming quarter leading towards the holidays and end of the year so just another hit to the economy we don’t need. I really do hope the current administration has a plan, even if it isn’t being shared with the public, to pressure both sides to go back to the negotiating table.
I export containers for a living out of CHS and SAV. Customers have been freaking out about this for the last 3 months. Hopefully ILA and USMX figure this out. Based on some of the videos I have seen from the ILA president, I think we are going to have a strike.
This was a great description of the real crisis at hand…! Now that I clearly understand that this strike would affect my deliveries of aged rum from Costa Rica but ALSO my supply of reserve Port wines from Portugal this negotiation must be brought to a successful conclusion !
The percentage impacted could be a good bit more than 51%. The tonnage slide you showed says the only Gulf Coast port represented there is Houston. So that's not taking New Orleans, Mobile, Tampa, or any of the smaller ports.
And don’t forget, California’s push for all their shipping trucks to be all electric for “emissions”… if that goes through and more starts coming through LA, watch prices soar even more
and the empire ends... with a whimper... not a bang... long time coming... and the workers do deserve better... theres no easy answer... the truth will come out after, and all of history will condemn these utterly worthless executives... all of whome deserve not the barest of mercy for the criminal acts they have long perpetrated... pretending to be in control... pretending to be aware... while they ground the world down to nubs. I hope they can see the harm they have caused, in their dreams.. I hope they never escape due justice.
I'm not going to say this executives are greedy, but the union leaders are just as greedy. They wouldn't be doing this if they weren't getting something for it. Union leaders don't give a shit about the workers, just there own pockets. You want to say the usmx are causing harm, well the union is causing just as much harm if not more cause they are willing to shut everything down and when a contract is finally reached, it's going to take time for things to go back to normal, so they are causing even more harm. It also sounds like they aren't willing to compromise otherwise they'd be at the table.
I was a union miner in Australia in 1990 and they offered me AU $35,000 tax free to leave and I took it only to be replaced with contractors. Maybe their union members may think it is an offer too good to refuse.
Thanks! Haven't hit the super like before, so kind of doing a catch up to you, Sal. My wife is also an Alum of Campbell, so I felt doubly compelled. Thanks again, ha e a good one!
Greedy union,, you want' 100% pay increase, NO ONE has ever gotten that in any union, you'll make inflation ever higher and and WTF should a new 2 year union member deserve to be paid more than someone who's been in the union 20 years?
I think some large interests have realized/remembered that disaster can be very profitable and another excuse to ratchet up prices that never come back down. This will certainly blow over eventually one way or another but not without hurting some people while making others richer.
Sal -- Very good, and timely update. The automation issue is inevitable but squarely counter to union objectives. Tough situation. Have you ever seen the language on automation in the most recent West Coast ILA contract? I've looked but cannot find it. Thanks for all of your work.

This guy gets it.
Jobs are not for citizens. The third world “asylum seekers” need to feed their families. Review the government’s own job statistics and see where the jobs are going. The sad thing is union workers keep voting for their own demise.
Always on target. Keep up the good work.

Sal : I lived in Baltimore, on the Seaplane Lagoon, in 1968. Containers where just being introduced. The ILU thought the right way to handle them was to have each box unloaded at the pier side and then repacked all by a Union member. Lee's Bro
Another great video Sal! Thanks for what you do!
Great presentation on the possible economic impact of the looming Port strike. Love the channel!
Finally subscribed to UA-cam's best global shipping channel.

Union's been on strike, he's down on his luck
It's tough, so tough
Thank you for the news as always Sal! My colleague and I were just discussing the severity of this potential shut down today.
As a drayage driver, im glad i have my side business....but not everyone can wait till they get their crap together!!! Even a shut down for 2 weeks will be really bad for a lot of people
I made money during strikes by buying empty containers. Buy low, sell high. Or work chicken boats. This was in Charleston.
Yelp sucks its be crap last 2 years. Every time got a good amount saved gotta use some. Especially with parts being 3x the price and crap anymore. Luck I got things I can do for money.

I live just outside of Mobile and have been thinking about the expansion of the container port here. Seems like just when they've built up the infrastructure to handle a bigger slice of the pie, the pie might not be there. Thanks for the update Sal.
You're the best, Sal👏👏👏
Perfect timing. Its all part of the plan.
The problem with unions is the management gets paid while strikes occur. They give up nothing while workers suffer.
@@1cdmap
You sound like fun European bootlicker
I haul containers so it’s going to slow us down big time here in KY. West coast ports ain’t too far from shutting down.
It's been a beautiful day!
Because of your excellent reporting of this issue I’ll let you know what we will work…. Cruise Vessels and military vessels….That’s it!
I appreciate Sal explaining this industry, its past, present and potential future in
impacts on our daily lives. I really do hope the current administration has a plan, even if it isn’t being shared with the public, to pressure both sides to go back to the negotiating table.
your cargo rail system will be greatly affected
Thanks Sal from one old salt to another. The definition of an old salt is, "Long time, no sea."
I export containers for a living out of CHS and SAV. Customers have been freaking out about this for the last 3 months. Hopefully ILA and USMX figure this out. Based on some of the videos I have seen from the ILA president, I think we are going to have a strike.
Yikes!!!
This is the first I’ve heard of it!
Seems like it would be big news
Thank you! I enjoy your explinations on whats happening in the world shipping economy.
This was a great description of the real crisis at hand…! Now that I clearly understand that this strike would affect my deliveries of aged rum from Costa Rica but ALSO my supply of reserve Port wines from Portugal this negotiation must be brought to a successful conclusion !
The west coast shut down at the end of covid was one of the major reasons companies could claim shortages and rise prices and inflation.
Thanks Pete!
This is preeeeefect for inflation…. Federal Reserve would love to use this for a scapegoat
I hope they never escape due justice.
you apparently have no clue what these "workers" make. Its allot more than the executives 80% of the time.
This ship never ends!
It’s ship- less !!

Well then..... thanks Sal. ❤️

I think some large interests have realized/remembered that disaster can be very profitable and another excuse to ratchet up prices that never come back down. This will certainly blow over eventually one way or another but not without hurting some people while making others richer.
I’m here in Norfolk yes they are going on strike. Was just talking about this today
I’m sure that they would love to see what negotiations look like with me being in the same room and lay out the facts and truths

That's the end of the contract term 6 years. Not really planned. They didn't want to negotiate the past year and here we are
Usually the companies want to use the elections to beat the worker down
Sal -- Very good, and timely update. The automation issue is inevitable but squarely counter to union objectives. Tough situation. Have you ever seen the language on automation in the most recent West Coast ILA contract? I've looked but cannot find it.

Ok, so we know what is coming. What do we do about it? Log onto Amazon and pre-order everything that I might need for the next few months? I can do that! Thanks for the heads up Sal.
Yes, Amazon - That'll help fix _all_ the problems.
@@UnitSe7enI’m sure Amazon doesn’t cure all the problems but at 80 years old it definitely helps fix some of mine. I just can’t get around like I used to so it provides a way for me to do some of my shopping.
Even better, it provides jobs for all the people involved in bringing the packages to me, like the Amazon driver, warehouse clerk, etc. As well, there are jobs for people who made the products, sent them to the ship that sailed to the Port that the longshoremen unloaded.
@@tinap.5064 Amazon is an awful company to work for. It's just an awful company, full stop.
