- Is Phil Foden World class? Is Bukayo Saka World Class? Rio Ferdinand caused a stir yesterday after Man City beat Copenhagen in the Champions League. He came out to say that Phil Foden is world class however Bukayo Saka is under the level. Do you agree? Would this opinion be different played for Mkiel Arteta in opposite to Pep Guardiola?

Trophies are not the ONLY metric to be considered world class but it is most definitely part of the consideration. You can’t just discard all trophies when judging a player cause even tho they aren’t everything they are undoubtedly still worth something

Saka has carried Arsenal so much since his teenage years, you need to realise this is a player that his team completely relies upon, he barely misses a game, rarely gets rested cos hes so important to the team, i dont think City can rely on Foden same way Arsenal rely on Saka

In Foden’s positions ( which is midfield and wings) we had players like mahrez, gundogan,Bernardo in same position as well and still Foden managed to get the numbers starting from bench. When we had injury crisis this season where most of our staters in such positions were out, we all saw how Foden carried the team

Saka is a winger, Foden is a CAM who is played on the wing because of Silva but is most dangerous centrally. Saka is more effective on the wings and his numbers back that up. We won't see Fodens true potential until he is played centrally consistantly. So the debate should be who is better Silva or Foden?

@@BlackChrishi he does his best work centrally. I think he would be a great false 9 or a partner for Haaland. Pep trusts other players more in those positions, so Foden is often pushed out wide. The Saka Vs Foden debate frustrates me because they are different players. Saka is more effective and consistent whilst Foden looks silky on the ball and his best moments come from central positions. His inconsistency is because he is rarely played there. Personally I think he lacks the tenacity of Silva or Odegaard and that's why Pep doesn't trust him.

The fact that Foden has been the most influential player at City this season is mad given the stars that are in that team. Fans of the red clubs are never logical when it comes to anything related to City.
If Saka was at City he would be far behind in his development because he was benched a lot given the talent City has. An example of that is Cole Palmer, he left City coz he wasn't being played and went to Chelsea where he plays. look what he is doing.

This is why fans out there should leave social media abit . Saka wouldn’t have started over Bernado Silva all these years until this season !! When Foden started to play regularly at city he was 19/20 and sane , Sterling , Mahrez , KDB , David and Bernado Silva where still in the team . There is no player in that list who Saka would have benched . Foden is a better overall football player and versatile which is why he was able to play on the wing despite not being a winger and benched Sterling in 2020/21 season and was one of the best players in the world that year at 20 years with a goal or assist all the way to the UCL final . Saka isn’t versatile and wouldn’t bench Mahrez mate. Wouldn’t bench sane . Foden had to compete with world class players . Saka had no competition at Arsenal that’s why he plays .

Iv seen play Saka as a 10, I think it was vs wolves a few seasons ago and was brilliant. Saka all round game is very underrated! He’s consistently getting doubled up! He’s going to get better. Fodan is easier on the eye! But talent wise there’s not much difference

I think a world class player is any who can walk into any team in the world and start right away or give the manager a selection headache irrespective of who was playing in the position before he came.
Harry Kane hasn't won anything but if he walks into any team in the world right now, he will start or be in contention for starting a match irrespective of which striker they have. Same for Vigil, Alisson, Salah, Rodri, KDB, Bruno Fernandes, Saliba, Rice, Vinicius, Jude Bellingham etc.
The flaw with the method is that foden would be considered world class due to being able to play LW, CAM, RW, and false 9 and still be at his best, while At the same time saka wouldn’t start ahead of salah ruling him not world class.
On current form I think they’re both world class but overall I don’t think either are world class just quite yet.

Agreed neither of them are world class yet from an overall perspective. If we’re talking ab current form I think both are world class in this moment, but overall it’s way too early to state that
If Bukayo played at City he would not be the same player he is now for Arsenal. 1stly at Arsenal he was allowed the room to develop as a RW he was played when he was in and out of form. The team is built around him even when he has a stinker he will still get game time and that will has helped him develop into an elite RW. On the other hand Foden plays for a team with elite players in every position. He is not the room to have stinkers back to back as soon he is not performng he is benched. Saka is a better right winger than Foden at moment but I think the same would be said about him if he played for City. Both players are Elite Foden edges it slightly because of his versatility and how good he is in all those positions. Both are not at the stage of World Class but you feel they are few seasons away from getting into that bracket. Bukayo is consistently producing brilliant numbers and his overall game is improving while Phil is slowly looking like he is taking over as the main man at City after KDB.
If trophies make you world class, than Kalvin Philips is also world class and Harry Kane is not.

I want to first say, all this judging and categorisation is just all for fun. You absolutely have to put a definition to the categories. Keep in mind, there's really nothing at stake, and it's already very subjective. You could quantifiably assess each player, but if you choose to do that, it's still up to personal value. The way I judge it is that "World-class" is as if you put together a couple of squads who could compete for an all-star world title, or whatever you want to call it.
In my head, I think of World-class players (Mbappe, Kane, Salah, Haaland, De Bruyne, Modric, Bellingham, Messi, etc.); Continental-class players, who probably rotate in and out of that bracket based on form (Son Heung-Min, De Ligt, Bernardo Silva, Musiala, Trent, Emilio Martinez, etc.) - I put Saka and Foden in this bracket - and; Top-class players, who I wouldn't quite make put in a continent's class (Nunez, Rice, Richarlison, De Jong, Gnabry, etc.).
my definition of world class is, can this player play for his country at the world cup. period. This all other non existing definitions are neither here nor there, they have no basis and no merit. Saka is world class, Foden is world class.

I would argue with Rio’s point that it’s the team not Foden, from Rio’s argument, anyone that plays for City is world class which isn’t the case. Neither should be in the conversation about being world class. They’ve got a way to go before they get to those levels.
On the flip side you don't start for city as consistently as foden if you aren't world class. You need to be levels above everyone else just to start at City. You could see it with Cole Palmer Kalvin Phillips. Martinelli would have a better chance of starting for City than Foden because of his work rate. Foden only gets moved around so much because he's not as good as the others in Pep's eyes. Saka was starting for England as left back, left wing back, right back. First two seasons he was playing as left back at Arsenal by the way.
It's clear that Rodri is the most influential based off the results in his absence. Foden is for the first time, being relied on consistently. Saka has been relied on heavily for multiple seasons. He has performed in every test he was given from early on. Also outperforms Foden for England. World Class is someone with the ability to transfer his abilities regardless of where they play. Foden needs players like KDB, Silva and even Alvarez to take on responsibility.
Neither are world class, but Foden just won't show his true potential like this. It seems to me that Guardiola doesn't rate him the way the fans do. And he knows more.

People think that Foden is more technical and Saka is the one that relies more on Pace & Power, when in reality it’s the exact opposite.
Saka is better at receiving and operating in tight spaces, better at combining with teammates, better deliveries and more creative.
Foden is much more explosive. Superior at receiving and playing in big spaces, far quicker in transition, more powerful shooter.
Not to say that Saka is not athletic or that Foden is not excellent technically, which they both are, but the public perception of both has it so so wrong, purely because Foden’s receiving and dribbling style is more aesthetically pleasing. 0 actual analysis goes into it.
ur actually right here, foden looks better on the eye than saka due to his dribbling style. But saka is very effective, dangerous and almost always causes goalscoring opporutnities. Based on attacking and chances created statistics over the past 2 years, saka is actually one of the best rw in europe. Saka has excellent crossing placement and great striking technique aswell which he has now displayed many times with outside the box finishes. Foden is definitely more explosive, and this is what makes his style of play more easy on the eye. more time you will see him suddenly lose his man then accelerate into the box to latch onto a pass and finish a goal.
Rodrygo has done it in champions league 2 seasons ago snatching the match under the nose of Pep and then winning it. Let's see if Saka can do it.

Both are good players. But Foden is a better 'baller'. Technical, finishing, movement, all that. I believe everybody is thinking too much about the word 'world-class' in the football world. 'When someone says, 'world-class', I just think a good player (more than your average player). It's just a generic word for an absolutely good player.

Guys, two seasons ago, Saka and Smith Row ensured Arsenal didn't finish in the second part of the table.
Neither are world class. As a winger, I prefer Saka. As an overall attacker, I prefer Foden and think he's the more complete attacker. It's like Haaland vs Mbappe argument, Haaland is the better striker, but Mbappe is the better and more complete attacker. Foden and Mbappe also pass the eye test more than Haaland and Saka.
If Foden and Saka are not world class then neither is Vini or Bellingham
