This option is used if you have lights sources close to your drawing, to make it affect the color. 2) if your canvas is hidden behind the cube, dont worry you will see in the next step how to move it. To people saying "use empties instead of boxes for the 3D cursor" ... The problem with the empties is that you need to leave your drawing tool, switch to object mode, then select the empty, then press shift+S, put 3D cursor to selected, go back to the greasepencil object, switch to draw mode.... And continue to draw. With the boxes, while you draw, you just press shift + Right click on them, and don't even need to leave the drawing tool :-). As an illustrator, i know that leaving the pen just to reposition a cursor is very bad for the creation workflow... So with this technique, you just need to place the boxes once for all
Also if for those who don't know, if you press N you open up a side bar menu, in one of these menus you can adjust the XYZ co-ordinates of the 3D cursor so if you set everything to 0 the 3D cursor will move back to world origin. Was stuck at 28:22 with the color until I wised up and actually read your pin. This tutorial has been amazing and is getting me motivated and moving. Thanks Dedouze, you are an awesome teacher and fantastic artist!
Note for those who are using Blender 2.83+. If your colors are too dark and changing color managment does not help. Uncheck "Use Lights" on every layer in your Grease Pencil Layers list. Second note: If you can't see your canvas (that square grid thingy in middle) even when it is turned "on" it is possible that color of background match color of your canvas. To change it go to that panel where you have grease pencil layers, then Viewport Display > Canvas and change color :) Third note: in Blender 2.83+ for fill you can use vertex paint which is faster but using materials have some benefits. For example you can quickly change colors in every layer.
Hi, thanks for the tips. The problems i've ran into with the canvas is that it is being obscured by the cube. If i look inside the cube I can see the grid.
Just finished this first part of a tutorial and I LOVE IT SO MUCH i learned more than in my art school lol Thanks to all the people that uploading such great tutorials
I'm about 34 minutes into this video while following along, and I feel like I'm at a point where I can say this has been super helpful in learning the basics of blender. Thank you Dedouze!!
Someone might have already given this tip but... in order to hide any kind of object in the final render you can also click the "funnel" drop-down list above the Outliner and select the "Disable in Renders" toggle, natively it's hidden. It's basically the same operation but in the long run and in more complex scenes it helps you visually keep track of all the objects. Absolutely brilliant tutorial nonetheless!
I joined a digital media class to learn how to animate and by the second year hated my art entirely. You've resparked my love for my own art and introduced me to an awesome new way of creating!
This is a great tutorial. A little tip, I'm not sure if it's the same in grease pencil but in every other tool that uses a brush (especially sculpting), the hot key F will allow you to resize the brush without having to adjust the slider. I forget but i think shift F allows you to adjust the opacity/hardness of the brush. Also if you press the TAB key it's a shortcut to change modes (object mode, drawing mode, sculpting mode, etc.), a littl wheel will appear and you can move your mouse and click yo change modes, if you're quick it will change to the mod3 you move your cursor to if it's done quickly. Also if you press Z you can switch between the views (render view, wite frame, texture preview, etc.) so you don't have to click in the top right. I'm sure you probably knew these but if you didn't here they are and if you dod well i hope this helps someone in the comments ^-^.
For the weel you actually have to press ctrl + tab, but yes, thats very useful! (Edit: also, the "if you do it quickly" happens when you move your mouse whilst still holding down the key (key or tab). The mode will change as soon as you let go of the key.)
even tho some funktions are different now (seems so) it helps me a lot following this tuto. i love the relaxed explanation, that little animated figure that visualizes the narrator, and its so friendly. i love it. its perfect for me as a non native english speaker.
you make blender seem so simple, i’ve always been intimidated by the complicated menus and the massive amount of STUFF in blender but you do such an amazing job of making it easy to understand, much better than my CAD teacher lol

Dude, you explained this so eloquently. These concepts can be hard to understand when explained badly. You made it simple and it takes a lot of talent and knowledge to do that. Thank you very much for sharing this ♥️
Wow, amazing tutorial! Not only is it awesome just to see your process, but you explain everything really well, in a nicely structured way (the concepts, Blender's quirks, your workarounds). Also, your voice is quite soothing. Using GP definitely looks less arcane to me now, makes me want to play with it. Thank you so much for making this!

"What is the purpose of my life" XDD oh gosh that me haha, thank you for this tutorial !!! I've been wanting to get into the grease pencil tool for a while now
I also have problems with the canvas! he is behind the cube, and also very very pale (faint ? slight? my english super bad) but the lesson is super, thanks! you are wonderful :)
Thanks for the tutorial! Honestly, till I tried it myself, I didn't think it was possible to properly use blender for 2d. I just have a small problem (and I've seen several other people with the same issue). In Blender 2.83 my straw gets overlapped by the box in certain camera positions. I opened the same file in 2.82 and the problem vanished. I -would- use the old version, but I can't get my pressure sensitivity working in it :/
I am using Blender 2.93 and am also having the same issues with this overlap 'flicker' effect between the box and the straw as I move / pan the view port (or camera) around. Both the straw and box are in '2D Layers' Stroke depth order as per this tutorial. As a test, I created an additional simple circle shape within the 'box' object / 'side float lines' as the active layer (followed by 'side float colors' to fill with a color). In case it is relevant, I created this on the same plane / X position as the side floating shapes, but around the same Z and Y position as the straw. Next, in edit mode, I selected all the points for line and fill of this extra shape, and pressed 'P' and separated these strokes by selected points, making it a new separate Grease Pencil object. Interestingly, this newly separated object 'Box.001' properly Z sorts with the straw... But *only* with the straw! Not only is there no flicker, but they correctly overlap with each other depending on which one is closer to the cam / viewport. There seems to be no option to sort objects by priority in 2D layers, yet these two objects just work. However despite successfully 'Z-sorting' with each other, the straw and this test 'box.001' object still both have the flickering issue with the main juice box object itself. Strange.... So we know that correct Z-sorting is possible, but either there's a bug with Blender, or there is a particular set of circumstances in the hierarchy / object data which determine whether or not this undesired effect occurs.
Wow thank you so much for this video. I just switched to linux and have basic navigation and modeling 3d objects with blender, I recently decided I wanted to start making animations using 2D objects and after a bunch of searching for different programs (after already installing blender and not even considering it for video editing) and trying shotcut and davinci I found myself back at blender. I'm amazed at the complexity of the software and am beyond grateful for this video! I didn't even know there was a grease pencil tool! I've been using blender for probably 30 hours before watching this video. Blown away, and subbed!
Anybody knows why when I click "show overlays" and then I click to see the canvas it's overlayed by the cube? I mean the canvas is not in "x ray" mode. How can I solve this?
Repost: Maybe might help for the canvas issue in 2.83. Grease Pencil Object Selected-> Object Data Properties (Green icon) -> Vieport Display -> Canvas -> Increase the scale. This doesn't solve the issue but at least you can change the size and the color.
not sure if this solves the problem for you - i'm using 2.9 and there is a little "Canvas X-ray" icon on the right side of the "Canvas" option (where he clicked canvas). if you click that, it will make the canvas more visible like it is in the video.
3D animation software has come so far since I used it back in high school. I remember with Z Brush was just a plug-in and Ink and Painter modifier was revolutionary. This is amazing. Thanks for sharing Dedouze!
Hi, really like the tutorial, but I have a problem with the canvas, when I add the canvas they don’t really appear. It’s like the cube it’s solid enough to not let show the canvas line. Hope you can help me with this.
it happened to me once, i dont remember how i solved it.. First you must be sure that you're not on "surface" mode in the top rule. And then, for me, i think i switched the preview modes in the top right corner of the viewport, or went back to other modes like sculpt or object, the back to draw mode...
thank you for making this! As a student, I'm broke lol so it's amazing to be able to have access to high quality tutorials on here, excited to learn :- )

This is the best Grease Pencil tutorial I've ever seen.
35:51 Tip:
Alt + D to create an Instance (changing one object's properties affects all)
Shift + D to create a Duplicate (each object is unique and treated differently)
Was stuck at 28:22 with the color until I wised up and actually read your pin.
This tutorial has been amazing and is getting me motivated and moving.
Thanks Dedouze, you are an awesome teacher and fantastic artist!
I love this tutorial cause u talk about mistakes u made and how to avoid them, thats a huge value u know
Note for those who are using Blender 2.83+.
To change it go to that panel where you have grease pencil layers, then Viewport Display > Canvas and change color :)
Third note: in Blender 2.83+ for fill you can use vertex paint which is faster but using materials have some benefits. For example you can quickly change colors in every layer.
Thanks for the "use lights" tip, that was just the problem I had!
@@trenensen8592 Sure, no problem :)
Hi, thanks for the tips. The problems i've ran into with the canvas is that it is being obscured by the cube. If i look inside the cube I can see the grid.
omg thanks for the color tips so much !!
I really need this, thanks man👍👍👍👍👍
Just finished this first part of a tutorial and I LOVE IT SO MUCH i learned more than in my art school lol
Thanks to all the people that uploading such great tutorials
Terrific! 🍭
Didn't expect your legendness in a non music video :-P lol
I'm about 34 minutes into this video while following along, and I feel like I'm at a point where I can say this has been super helpful in learning the basics of blender. Thank you Dedouze!!
And to think, this is mostly for the grease pencil !!!
This is one of the most valuable blender tutorial channels due to how rare are good grease pencil tutorials are thank you Dedouze!
Such stunning work. We need more tutorial makers like you out here!
this is what type of videos i was looking for when i was a beginner, bro is answering every question that a beginner will face, thanks bro
This is awesome, need to sit back and watch again later to learn this!
even tho some funktions are different now (seems so) it helps me a lot following this tuto. i love the relaxed explanation, that little animated figure that visualizes the narrator, and its so friendly. i love it. its perfect for me as a non native english speaker.
you make blender seem so simple, i’ve always been intimidated by the complicated menus and the massive amount of STUFF in blender but you do such an amazing job of making it easy to understand, much better than my CAD teacher lol
Thank for Grease Pencial tutorial, this is the first time I use it. Great tool.
34:50 You can Add Plane at 3D Cursor then move Cursor. When you want to go back, just Shift + S > Cursor to Active / Cursor to Selected.
That was amazing dude, thankyou so much. Can't wait for part 2! Also... that part you mentioned at 42:46 was so bloody helpful! You don't know how long I've been trying to sort that weird 2D layer issue out. Thankyou so much!

dude, thank you SO MUCH for this, I'm astonished with the effort you did on it and still released here. I've been postponing to learn blender for a bit time now, but with this I feel like I should not worry about anything and just go into it. also, the tips were amazing! specially the 3d cursor one. I started downloading blender right on the start, but my connection is a bit low so I'm still waiting, but I'll be watching part 2 real soon with blender installed already!
again, thank you!
I'm just fascinated with how you made your avatar animate in time to your voice. It even looks down when making changes. That detail is brilliant

Seriously this is an amazing tutorial, you are providing a wonderful service.
One of the greatest Blender tutorials of all time.
Woah. This got in my recommended and I’m glad it did. My graphics card isn’t good enough for blender but your so talented, chill, and soothing it doesn’t matter. Gonna be saving up for a new graphics card. I hope you get more recognition! 👌😀
Thank you so much for making this!
nibblrrr thank you!! I made lots of efforts for the voice to speak clearly. I don’t usually speak english so it took hours to record this 😅
I'm only a minute and a half in and I'm already feeling like this is a blessed tutorial.
If you're having a hard time seeing the canvas due to it being too faint. You can increase the "Canvas Grid Opacity" in the overlays panel and also change the color by clicking the "green spaghetti" under "viewport display" - "Canvas" - "Color".
wow thanks i was struggling for hours to change the color of the canvas you saved me thanks a lot XDD
this is exactly what i was looking for: animating 2d in 3d media. i love frame-by-frame animation but always struggle with creating believable space and imagining characters actually moving around in it.
you have such a nice + soothing voice! (i'm sure someone has already said this but i just had to compliment haha, so soft sounding)
lumi XR thank you! I’m glad you like it! some other people said it was too smooth, it made them want to sleep instead of finishing the tutorial! Ahah... ASMR 3d animation tutorial 😂
Dédouze, your illustration for blender is my reason to chose this tool! Finally, I found ur channel! I really love the idea that we can make 2D illustrations move like 3D~ love ur work !
33:35 you could also select the lines on editmode, then shift+s and snap the cursor to selected.
Yes, a time saver. I mostly navigate that way when modelling.
Went through a ocean of tutorials on 2D animation in Blender, and never found a more explanatory yet simple video than yours! Thanks a ton mate! Like seriously. 🥂
I've been waiting for this day forever!! :D Can't wait to see more content! Thank you sooo much for sharing your process. Your channel is gonna be a huge step for grease pencil and blender in general :)

What's amazing about blender is that it's base is a 3D software, meaning you can model the box in 3d and just draw over it in any rotation and angle. Truly amazing for a free software
This video is half a tutorial, half ASMR. And I like that

Thank you for the tutorial

I didn't think I would like blender, but you've changed my mind
I love it! Your voice is very calming, too. My colors are much darker than what I have chosen. Any ideas?
Thank you ! well i think you missed an important part, arount 11:03
@@dedouze Voila! merci
Others have said it but it bears repeating... a perfect tutorial voice.
I've barely even started this video but I love it already.
I also have this question xD
I need help with this too please. When I try putting the canvas in xray mode it says it's not available in current mode.
Repost: Maybe might help for the canvas issue in 2.83.
Grease Pencil Object Selected-> Object Data Properties (Green icon) -> Vieport Display -> Canvas -> Increase the scale. This doesn't solve the issue but at least you can change the size and the color.
@dilem koren Hi, i saw that part, but unfortunarly it did not solve the issue.
not sure if this solves the problem for you - i'm using 2.9 and there is a little "Canvas X-ray" icon on the right side of the "Canvas" option (where he clicked canvas). if you click that, it will make the canvas more visible like it is in the video.
I'm having this same problem :/
it happened to me once, i dont remember how i solved it.. First you must be sure that you're not on "surface" mode in the top rule. And then, for me, i think i switched the preview modes in the top right corner of the viewport, or went back to other modes like sculpt or object, the back to draw mode...
@@dedouze Thanks very much! I'll give that a go!
Dedouze what is surface mode?
