Pedro Pascal's Parents Were Political Refugees
• Pedro Pascal's Parents...
Imagine telling someone that your parents had to flee their country because they were probably going to get tortured and killed and you say "that's cool! My parents weren't that cool"
I`m sorry to say it but chances are his parents were much much worse. My parents were repressed, my grandpa barely survived and my great grandpa got killed. That was done to us by communists. They wanted to do the same in Chile but instead the Hunta won and got rid of them. Truth is the Hunta in Chile was thousands of times better than the communists. They play the victim today because they lost not because they were any better.
@@cowboybeboop9420 do you mean junta? lol since you can't spell junta i assume you are not chilean, I am and you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about
@@kapi253 No I`m not Chilean. I`m Bulgarian. Pascal and his parents were communists. He said it himself. Communists are the devil on Earth.
You were quite lucky honestly. Coz you got Pinochet and he left you a good constitution and the richest country in Latin America. We ended up with the communists and the poorest country in Europe. Banishing and taking power away from communists is never a bad thing.
@@cowboybeboop9420 really? Chilean Dictatorship was "better" because they killed "just" 10.000 and communists killed even more?
Pathetic
@@p4blodiabl0 Well yeah. The Hunta killed just 10 000 people and most of them were communists so they weren`t really all that human to begin with. The Hunta in Chile also turned the country from the poorest to the richest in Latin America and solved a lot of the country`s problems including a lot of the freefall for decades on end that countries who are still recovering from communism feel to this day.
I realize 10K sounds like a lot but you have to take it into comparison. For example my country lost 200K people and had half the population and those communists where trying to do a dictatorship themselves so you really missed a bullet there. I feel no sympathy for communists.
To say he downplayed a significant and traumatic cultural event to an embarrassing degree is an understatement. This conversation had so much more potential. It is clear there is a lack of empathy and respect on the host’s part to just awkwardly laugh it off as he did.
There's only so much darkness you can hold... Eventually you learn to see the funny side of things. If not, you would be wallowing in darkness for a long time. I'm sure that's why Pedro laughed along.
True but then that dips into US imperialism territory and calling them out. It was the US who backed that coup. Can't have critical conversations about American foreign policy. Pedro calls his self "very liberal" but my man is likely a socialist but he knows mouth breathing Americans would hear that word and go bezerk
"My parents escaped from a genocidal dictator."
"That's cool, my parents [lame joke]"

@@eduardobarria7181 Cringe.

You probably don't even know how to pronounce Pedro's name.
Pedro: "My parents were political refugees"
Jimmy: "It's kind of cool"
Really Jimmy? Really? How disrespectful.
It's outright retarded. His own country forced the situation. I cringe so bad whenever an American raises objections about dictators
Its like he make's fun of the jews on ww2
people in the us are far more racist than they realize. ww2 was so so terrible because white people was killed. dictatorships in latin america is a matter of jokes because whatever, it was just a bunch of latinos.
Magallanes 2540 what did u say?
@@fabricciozamora3592 The truth, there is enough evidence that the CIA and Nixon contributed to the fall of Allende together with the Chilean oligarchy.
Kimmel: My parents were survivors of 9/11.
Pedro: Wow it's kinda cool.
Kimmel and United States citizens: TRIGGERED.
Was in 9/11 of 1973 the chilean military coup too... Thats courious... or not.
The truth is that his parents belonged to a terrorist group that tried by violent means to establish a Marxist dictatorship under the rule of the USSR, similar to Cuba.

I love Pedro, I love Jimmy... But there's nothing "cool" about being a political refugee. I'm chilean and the wound is still open. Pinochet is part of a very dark and painful moment of our lives.
I'm sorry but, are you chilean? I'm not gonna argue with you about this. The numbers might say one thing but the truth is one completely different. All of our natural resourses are in foreing hands, we have one of the highest levels of inecuality in the world. We might have the highest GDP in South America, but that it's not the reflection of our reality, because the richest 1% controles everything and 'thanks' to them our GDP is high. The ends DO NOT justify the means, we lost more than 2.000 lives just because they thought differently. There's only one thing that i'm thankful of the dictator General Pinochet, and that is that I'm sure that this will never happen again. Not while concious people lives in this country.
@Constanza Venegas - I'm very interested in this topic. Do you have any recommendations for reading material?
I feel like Pinochet has become a big joke, as long as we understand how dark that moment was and we take it in consideration for decision making issues we can laugh about. It's in the past, we should learn from it but also get over it.
@@bluequeen8022 I'm sure you can say the same thing about the survivors of the holocaust, pr 9/11. "It's in the past guys, move on"

Watching this now, I cringe at Jimmy’s Jokes. Like, ....I understand you’re a late night talk show host but...maybe don’t make jokes about a mans parents being political refugees because they had to flee a country where they were literally political targets(as His parents would’ve been killed and he would’ve either been killed or sent to be adopted by a couple sympathetic to the regime) cause they were related to the democratically elected president who was killed in a US-CIA-orchestrated coup to install an authoritarian dictator who killed thousands of ppl...just saying
Like, Pedro was clearly uncomfortable here and trying not to show he’s uncomfortable and I see it and I feel so bad for him

this is extremely disrespectful, as a chilean person who's father was a political refugee, it's not something 'cool', as this unedicated gringo put it, to leave your home, your family and your country because THE UNITED STATES DECIDED TO FINANCIALLY INTERVENE A LEGITIMATE DEMOCRACY AND INSTALL A DICTATORSHIP, it's not something funny and we as a society should prevent this from happening, it's dangerous that someone with his plataform decides to openly joke about a trauma that he never lived, and that he is uncapable to understand.
my parents also were political refugees and they also took me to the movies a lot as a kid. I was six years old when I saw star 80

G A H he's so handsome????!?!? my god.... that boyish smile of his makes me absolutely m e l t ~~
Pinochet and his dictatorship was a disgusting stain on the history of our country and because of abusers like that, people like Pedro's family had to leave. There are Chileans who will always idolize Pinochet because they consider that not standing in line for shopping or having more comforts (issues generated mostly by the ruthless economic blockade at that time) is more important than free speech.
Imagine living in fear of being disappeared for the simple fact of listening music or reading books that went against the military dictatorship... well that's what happened here.

Funny how american avoid Pinochet topic. Hard to be the bad guys just for once?.
wagnar what helping to take down a unpopular Marxist president bringing chile to its knees for a anti-communist general introducing policy's that created the Chilean economic miracle. Sounds like the USA are the good guys to me
Maybe the fact the "unpopular marxist president" (false he was elected democratically) was replaced by a brutal dictator by CIA that killed or dissapeared 3.000 people and tortured around 40.000. Also he exiled nearly 400.000 chileans who lost their home.
Besides Pinochet "economic miracle" was destroying the economy with one of the worse chilean crisis in XX century and leaving the country with worse inflation and poverty than Allende. (there was 45% of people living under poverty line at the end of Pinochet's regime. Today is less than 11%) Chile's economic miracle and boom started with the center leftists goverments AFTER Pinochet. It was Patricio Alywin, Eduardo Frei and others democratic rulers who really opened chilean economy.
Not the once, either. :-(
