I was once wearing 4 sprays of Amouage Interlude Man in the office.A colleague of mine was astounded by it and was raving for it. As soon as i left the office being happy, 2 women were walking on the pavement and as soon as i passed them , they said "Bliach ! He smells like an ashtray ! "

I had to take a short trip round the corner to the post office yesterday and just before I left I sprayed one tiny, TINY little spray of Naxos (barely anything came out), but I got stuck in a huge queue in a small shop and had multiple people around me coughing and choking. I couldn't believe how much it was projecting. It never worked that well on my skin before. I was wishing the world would just swallow me up! We really do need to be very careful how much we spray, as normal people just aren't as used to it as we are.

@@jzed9138 Nor me usually, but on this occasion it stank the shop out. I have the type of skin that is sometimes very dry and sometimes very oily, so fragrances react on me differently day by day. Sometimes I get great performance, sometimes I get virtually nothing.

Facts folks: There are some fragrances that only need 1 or 2 sprays. Conversely, some fragrances actually do better with extra sprays because you get to smell more nuance. Test at your own risk.
Wish fragrance houses gave you some idea of how powerful a fragrance is. Informed shoppers is a happier shopper.

I wore Eros Flame for the first time and oversprayed. I’m in IT and was helping an older gentleman with his computer in his small office. His cough started small but then became more and more aggressive and I knew right away I was choking him out. I tried my best to quickly finish what I was doing and went to the bathroom to try to wipe off what I could so I wouldn’t choke anyone else out. 😂

Me being new to fragrances went into a perfume shop years ago and sprayed invictus victory elixir 8x and pdm layton exclusif 3x on my body (i live in the caribbean and it was summer). Walked out and by the time the sun hit my body, i became walking biochemical weapon, i almost killed myself because i couldn't get away from my own body. I walked into a supermarket to get some snacks and then i walked to the cashier and she stared and me and held her nose. I then looked back and saw people glancing at me all over. I hurried out of the supermarket to go catch the bus and by the time i got into the bus fully sweaty, colognes projecting at its MAX, lets just say it was a very interesting bus ride home. Still didnt learn my lesson after that 💀

I think it's okay to over spray depending on the notes of the fragrance. For example, i can over spray Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue and no one ever seems to complain vs something heavy like Red Tobacco. Just know what you're spraying, when you are spraying.

I haven’t had anything as bad as these stories (yet), but I just have to wonder how many times people have been put off by my smell or said to another, “Yeah, Henry’s a nice guy but have you noticed how he always smells like cologne?” People pick up on these things and don’t say anything, in my experience.

there are some fragrances that are much weaker and have more subtle scents, and with those you can put on a lot. 20 does seem like overkill even for those weaker ones. And if you are going to be outside, then you can overspray since you'll never be filling a room.

My college campus has really bipolar weather. My weather app said it’d be 35 degrees, so I put on my really smoky, oudy clone of By The Fireplace. Turns out there were no clouds and no breeze which made the day feel like springtime. The scent was so strong it made me nauseous and I had to change clothes halfway through the day.

I too was excited to wear a new frag I had just received. It was PDM Carlisle and we were heading to watch an elementary school program (it was winter at least). Little did I know that the entire place was basically standing room only, and I had no idea how the fragrance performed. I'd say I did four sprays, which was probably one too many. Some teenager near me kept doing the exaggerated cough cough cough thing, though he was eventually scolded by his mother. Ha.

It’s like if you have the aux in a car and you’re really deep into a niche genre of music. If you play that in the car of course no one else is going to like what you’re playing and they’re trapped in a car listening to it 😂. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice scents you love to be considerate of those around you and go with something with some more mass appeal. There’s a balance between wearing what you love and not caring what people think. Just a time and place for each scent.

6 sprays of Mancera Black Noir. I think it isn't very strong but the sillage is great. I wore it to an outdoor concert, 60F, 15mph winds, wearing a coat. Maybe someone will smell it?... A homeless guy down the street called me out. I was standing with 500 people so I guess people noticed. Once you gain experience with these powerful fragrances the volume in your head gets turned down. The gammut of human perception is unpredictable. I am often surrounded by people with no sense of smell so the window creeps too far.

What a great video! It encourages me to try some of my challenging colognes again, and this time plan it better and with better occasion selection. I had the same happen to me a couple of times. First time, I decided to wear Mancera's Red Tobacco, I had heard so much about this scent and when I got it I wanted to wear it and enjoy the delicious scents. Well, it was during the summer, I sprayed it at home, put it in my workbag and went to work. I enjoyed it on my skin, but then my nose went blind. I applied more, then in the afternoon I went to put my workbag in my car. Before I closed the trunk I decided to apply more because I couldn't smell it anymore. When I stepped out of the elevator, a woman was coming in and walked into that wall of Red Tobacco that punched her on the face. She just made a face and said something like 'whoah'!. I hope she doesn't have to see me again. The other one was a few weeks ago as the summer was ending but still pumping some heat. I received my long awaited Xerjoff Alexandria II, another one with many comments and recommendations. My wife asked me to go with her to pick up some items at a bakery for a program that night. I decided to try the Alexandria II. I sprayed it once, just loved the scent! I got so excited that I sprayed probably 6 more times. We went to the bakery. As we were waiting to be called, a woman that was standing close to us literally gasped for air and ran to the other side, still trying to breath air without Xerjoff. I knew it was me because I could smell myself and it was strong for me. I tried to stay still, hoping the scent wouldn't pump into the air. I have to say, I feel sorry for my wife riding in the same car with the windows closed and not saying anything. She's a great and brave wife. I will use what you shared with the many more challenging aromas I have purchased. Thanks again.

I over sprayed Mancera Red Tobacco. It's winter time and i need to go pick something up at a electronics store, so i take a hot shower which is my first mistake and quickly throw on a bunch of layers and throw on the fragrance thinking ill be fine its cold out (probably far more than 2-3 sprays cause i have a travel spray so less juice is being sprayed). Well i immediately start sweating cause my body is still warm from the shower and the multiple layers plus being in a rush. When i get to the check out i'm asking this girl about something and this younger guy who is also behind the counter made a comment about the smell. So i knew it was me, i got a little embarrassed which made it project even more. Then by the time i'm checking out the guy makes a loud statement "someone smells like an old lady."So by the time i leave the store i'm probably turning a bit red and trying to hold a laugh in. To all the young people not every thought has to be announced to the world thank you and don't over spray Mancera Red Tobacco. I don't think i have worn it since.

Awesome video idea! Let’s be real though, if you’re in the hobby this type of things is gonna happen to you at least once lol. Scent is just as powerful as fashion, and everyone HATES to be gaudy.
My worst story was actually when I was sitting in a classroom late in my junior year of college. I had just recently gotten and fallen in love with “Bracken Man” by Amouage, as it made me feel so dapper and actually grown up in a very busy and work filled time in my life. Unfortunately, my classmates thought I smelled like a dentists office, and it was the one and only time I had a 2 seat buffer on all sides between me and another student. Safe to say I learned my lesson, better to be understated than overstated.
Would love to see a video kind of like this with scents that in your opinion CANT be over-sprayed, for however you interpret that prompt I guess.

I had an embarrassing situation with the original Layton. I had just got it in and was excited to wear it. I was getting together with a group of friends at the local beer garden. It was a late summer/early fall evening. I put on around 5 sprays before leaving the house. After a few hugs, no one said anything and I felt a little disheartened. I thought at least one of the females in our group would tell me I smelled nice. We decided to walk over to another more “clubby” bar and it was so busy there was a line to get in. As we’re standing in line waiting a couple guys in front of us turn around and one of them says “yo who smells like peach schnapps? That shit’s strong” and one of the girls in our group said “I think it’s you, Jonny” and I was like “yeah probably” and it was a pretty embarrassing situation. I’ve also been told by a coworker that I smell like their grandparents house while wearing Layton. So I rarely wear Layton anymore unless it’s really cold outside and even then only 2-3 sprays.

lol that's the scary part, I couldn't care less if people like what I wear, I wear it for my enjoyment. But I certainly don't want to smell repulsive. And I just experienced this type of thing first hand with my mother wearing gucci flora orchid, smelled floral and nice to her on her skin but zero floral smell only sugarcookie and toffee with 15 feet of her. She would have never known, but thankfully returned it since it was new. Something like that makes me wonder if there is something I can't smell as the secondary wafting notes around me. Scary haha

Justin love your channel. I worked night shift as a psychiatric nurses aide. I sprayed Muglers Angel Men twice on my chest. When I was in shift report with the other nurses they kept giving me hateful looks. The next day a memo came out from the Nurse Manager stating no cologne or perfume should be worn at work. I'm self-conscious now about wearing A-Men cologne except for at home.

TBH, I think I'm starting to understand the underlying reason for this ongoing battle of the sprays 😁.
People that prefer say 2-4 sprays as the norm will be mainly spraying around their head and neck area. So I think they assume that people that use significantly more are doing the same.
This is an inaccurate assumption as most people that have outlined their routines generally spread the sprays out and will also have many on or under clothes. This also matches my personal routine (fragrance depending) and I haven't oversprayed in quite some time (as in actually using too much and choking people out) as I learned from past mistakes and test new fragrances at home first, starting with minimal sprays and slowly adding until reaching the desired result.
Think of it like this, if you're cooking and use lots of spices you can develop a deep flavour profile, but use the same amount of only one type of spice and it will be overwhelming.
Some people swear by a sprig of thyme and a pinch of salt and pepper being enough, others prefer a bit more.
Comes down to taste at the end of the day and neither side needs to "learn" if they're happy and aren't bothering those around them. 😊

Something I learned is that the majority of people don’t like strong fragrances, something like Sauvage Elixir, Tuscan Leather, Layton, middle eastern fragrances etc. It’s a true that not many people want to acknowledge. I’ve oversprayed Fierce by A&F and other fresh fragrances and no one has complained, they have actually complimented.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  Місяць тому +5

Thanks! I usually start with a spray or two on the hand, and try to avoid smelling up close right away. I want to experience it in the air. If I can’t smell it very strongly, I’ll smell it up close to get all the nuances. If I like what I smell in the air and/or up close, I’ll give it a full wearing out of the house on a different day with a modest amount of sprays (2-4) and see how it goes.
But as I said, I’ve still messed up the full wearing! Should have gone with 2 sprays of the Argos and not 4!

Oh man, wore Duc de Vervins L'Extreme to work. It's a bitter, herbal aromatic fougere. Very handsome scent love that there is little to no sweetness and with it being a mature forward scent my coworker was looking around, breathed in and made a frowning face 🤣 then she said "what is that smell" as she said that she looked up at me and stopped talking she put the pieces together and knew it was me and awkwardly tried to excuse herself. Was so hilarious but it still one of my favorite fougeres

I loved this set of stories. You're an awesome dude to be self-aware and not in a IDGAF mode.
in short, I've had some times where I wore too much and I now work in a pharmacy. I'm pretty good with not wearing too much these days. I generally do one spray in my shirt and one spray outside of my shirt and i dont wear on skin much. I think this helps me not be "too much". Skin vs clothes probably isn't talked about enough but I like clothes better overall. Less to worry about because projection is mild-moderate and it lasts longer. My two-"scents".

Rule of thumb...strong sweet fragrances no more than 3-4 light sprays max! Sweet fragrances (especially gourmands) tend to smell much better when only hints of it are caught from a distance. It can be alluring in such circs and it will invite people closer to get a better whiff.
Fresh (cool) fragrances on the other hand....spray up to 6 sprays because even if the scent is pretty strong in the air it still tends to be pleasant and maybe even garner compliments. Plus such a fresh fragrance tends to die down much faster.
Of course that rule can be tinkered with and modified depending on the fragrance, occasion, circumstances and of course, conditions...but I think its a good place to start.
Just this weekend I breached the rule and put on way too many sprays of D&G Pour Homme and felt like a real goon when someone said she could smell me from a mile away. I immediately started to feel hot with accompanying sweating no doubt caused by embarrassment. Never a good thing. 😅

Had a few moments like that in my journey but that made me smarter. I’ll give two experiences: one I was on a second date with someone and the plan was she was coming to my house for a home cooked dinner and Netflix movie (😂). I was new to the fragrance journey and had a sample of bond #9 governors island. I sprayed it 3-4 times but for whatever reason I couldn’t detect it (the fragrance is notorious for that). So I sprayed it 3-4 more times and still it was faint.
So I gave up and just went about my business, she arrived like 15 mins later and the cologne opened up FULLY. Suffice to say I choked her out (and myself out) and ran into my bathroom and tried to wash as much of it off as I could 😂.
Second time, again still in my new fragrance journey, I sprayed on tobacco touch (tobacco vanille clone) pretty heavy, around 6 sprays, and was in a clothing shop, and asked one of the young workers there a question or two, now granted this was during 2021 so she had a surgical mask on. I went about shopping and from like 10 feet away I heard her speak Spanish to her coworker “omg I hate that smell” and her coworker remarked “yeah what is that??”, and the girl whispered something to her and all of a sudden I felt eyes on me 😂😂😂😂. I speak Spanish btw 😢.

First time I was definitely overexcited with 5 sprays. She approached me in the same manner Ross (TLTG) mentioned yesterday on the live stream regarding Overture man.....
With a quiet, low voice (dripping with disapproval and disappointment) she said 'I do not dislike the scent but yeah...cool it dude' 😅
Ok, but she's not a fragrance lover so I considered this somewhat of a win since she did not dislike this Oudy fragrance.
Next try I did 4 sprays. Nope
