Nafem Agreed. The only reason I’m interested in science and education is because of UA-cam. Education, in my American experience at least, doesn’t teach to inspire interest and is usually taught inefficiently or not at all. Also it’s not centered around the individual. School should teach well everything NEEDED to be a productive citizen and then add classes that the student finds important. I’m sitting in a required floral class right now... yeah.
most young people today don't understand the importance and functions of education so they take it for granted. others perceives it as wasting of money and time but earning a degree at least is one possible contribution to society.
Are you in high school or college? (Either way, floral classes is not a very common option, much less a requirement. I'm intrigued as to why, and where) I ask because I'd be interested in discussing your ideas on creating a world or system of more quality education, and if you're heading towards a career in education.

It's beautiful how people are pointing out various world's needs because at the same time they are showing what kind of missions they're more involved in.
It's beautiful how you're able to put a lot of my inner thoughts and beliefs, which are firm enough for me but difficult to express in casual conversations, into clear and concise films. Thank you.
Dropping the ''change the world' and 'what society needs' ego bullshit helped immensely. Chances are my soul came into this world to enjoy,to experience,to play ,to create not to be burdened with hugely exaggerated tasks of only relative importance , or slave to the imposed ideals set by society.
great argument. Absolutely zero empirical evidence for a soul. Do you believe in unicorns too? Cause both are equally substantiated. Get your head of your ass and realize your thought bias.
Just another one stuck in platos cave can't see anything beyond shadows on the wall ... trust me dude i'm a mensa member i base my belief on personal experience+patterns of common thoughts of great thinkers,philosopers,teachers...
Amazing! - this is so true. I had so many plans & ideas, but decided to actually write them down to see which made sense. Now I'm also down to just 2 missions in life!
This is exactly what i started to do a couple of years ago. After some tremendous griefs i slightly changed my way of thinking things in life. Took a while but now i'm happy. I'm committed: i'm on mission. I sometimes imagine me as a soldier who has to fight on the front line; this push me through difficult tasks.
This is exactly what i needed. I thought that for some reason i can't complete project on my own because i was always distracted by other things that also interest me. I always likes this quality of me that has so many interest and willingness to learn something new, but lately I've been thinking maybe this is exactly what hinders me to be great at anything and just stops me at being "good enough". As always School of Life never disappoints. I always finds topics i need ❤
My mission: to utilize space to solve our problems here on Earth. I think it's very important that we find ways of maintaining our resource-intensive societies without killing our planet. I also happen to have skills that support this view. My specific ambition in this regard is to engineer a propulsion system from Earth to space that's 1000x cheaper than a rocket. That's the first step: access to space. Once that's figured out, then the fun can truly begin. I know most people don't prioritize things this way, but space will slowly become one of the most important domains of human life on Earth in the next several decades. We will use it for energy, resources, research, manufacturing, entertainment and leisure, and all manner of the industrialized activities that make our existence on this beautiful, pale blue rock tenable. There are other things one could create a mission about. This particular one affects everyone in 40 years, so I find it prudent to spend time working on.
My promise was to do good if I ever got out of the gutter that was my life. I've been homeless and it's no joke. Now recovered, I can finally focus on my life long mission (always had one) instead of just surviving. What chilling timing, very accurate.
The good part in life is that you don't always need a mission to earn experience : you can start drawing for fun and then be part of the School of Life because you want to improve people's life!
My thoughts are that "happiness" is two parts: things you give to yourself (pleasure), and things you give to others (meaning). An excess of one or the lack of another can leave life feeling empty. My purpose or "mission" is to essentially promote personhood, but that doesn't mean I won't spend time reading a good book. ^__^ Still, a great video! That's why i subscribe, thank you.
Years ago I had a religious group knock on my door and ask me what my purpose in life was, I answered him squarely, 'I want to help to stop climate change'. His response was that nobody had ever been able to answer that question when he asked it. I know what my skills and interests are, the legal system and working in law, so I am now working towards becoming a barrister so that I can help change the law to make the government act on climate change. Literally, #Lifegoals
I wish you the best of luck with that. Climate change is a real and serious problem, it's sad that the majority of people either deny it or do not care about it.
Most of the comments are saying "mission is not only for others need." Just admit it you are taking no mission and living for your ambition it is not a problem it just annoyed me how everyone misleads the thought.
lacrymam ikr , there is always negative people who would try their best to drag other people down out of jealousy because they themselves are failure in life . what a bunch of pathetic lowlife -_-
I like the school of life so much and it has helped me with self-love, self-esteem a lot. But I don't like this one too much. not only because the importance of having a mission has been claimed by so many authors and nothing really new but also because an idea that one has to have a mission has deranged me a lot. I would rather want the school of life to talk about why it might be okay not to have a mission. I think it is not only me that has the same problem. We know it is important to have a mission, but we just cannot find it. And being told that its important over and over just increases anxiety. (But I do thank you for most videos!)
Why do we need to have a mission at all? Why can't we work (dilligently) in whatever field we like and just enjoy life because I think whatever work we do, meaning whatever job we do, we are directly or indirectly contributing in the development of the world. But I agree thinking about what we want to do is useful to narrow down the choices and have clarity.
Many workers don't fulfil themselves in their works. This is called 'alienation of labour'. In our modern society, most people don't work in order satisfy their own needs, they work in order to get paid a regular salary so they can survive (not necessarily live happily). Instead, they work for the satisfaction of the needs of other people. Many people experience that this evokes a void inside them, a feeling of not being a whole human. This video can help these people. If these people finds their mission, where they can utilize their full potential, they will feel fulfilment instead of void.
I felt my mission become apparent to me around a decade ago. I still feel this burning urge to start or commit to this mission, but i am held back at the moment by medical issues in my way. It is not something in which I am procrastinating on, or dreaming about doing one day. I just do not have the abilities to start just yet. My life's dream is to be in a physical place where I can start my mission. It's one I feel is of importance to me which came about by learning a valuable life lesson very young. I hope one day to leave behind something in which I have implemented others to continue on their mission too. If we all put others needs first in the world, we could become a kinder race to each other, and no, I'm not living in some type of 'utopia' or am unaware of the natural instincts of mankind and the world in which we live. Just a small step of kindness once a day to another human being purely because we can.
My missions: reduce animal suffering ( my job is at an animal sanctuary) and make the world a little more joyful with art ( need to do art to feel sane)
Chloe doesmakeup. You're welcome :) One of my dreams is to help seals and dolphins. Wonderful animals. But looking after all animals is important and necessary!
Your mission also doesn't need to serve humanity in any way. If I set out to make beautiful artwork, then that is my mission but it doesn't serve humanity, it serves myself. But it's no less valiant a mission then anyone else's goals. There was this underlying message throughout this video that whatever you decided to do, it needs to be to further society. And, at least to me, that seems false. A mission should be (in my eyes) pursuing the mastery of something that brings you joy.
If you're after personal hedonism and don't care about others, then do crystal meth. Just save enough first, so you don't get into lows and withdrawals. You're welcome.
movement2contact but I'm not a chemist. If I was a chemist who only wanted to make money, then that's cool. What I'm getting at is you can do other things with your life than "try to save the world" because that task in itself is impossible
woodland weirdo fair enough. I must have missed that part on my first watchthrough. I still feel like there is nothing wrong having an ambition over a mission. Following your own pursit allows others who have the same goals to see that it is possible.
Looking back on this years later, I can only wonder what part of Musk's mission statement involved buying Twitter and turning into the internet's richest troll.
To help refine missions, consider the four basic needs for a healthy global system: body health (food and water inputs and body waste "recycling"), home health (healthy spaces to live in, for all), community health (public meeting/working spaces, transportation, energy production, history collection), and cultural health (stories/visions of a better future and defining who we are as a planet full of diverse animal, vegetable, and mineral life). Pick one to focus on and then do whatever you love to do in that area to help improve access to these things for some individual or group.
What happens when you focus on one thing and fail completely? Life is too short for this type of thinking, I say try to be happy and be kind to others.
Though the one thing I sort of disagree with is that you mission has to center around other's needs. I believe your mission has everything to do with your ambition and can be very much selfish. Maybe for example, a persons mission in life can simply be to become a more well-rounded and educated person I think that that has nothing to do with the success's their mission may achieve. Don't know if that makes any sense at all but anyway, I love the content in this video!
I like how this comment as well as similar ones, reflects the chronic individualism of today’s youth. We Millennials have been targeted for being the “Me Me Me” generation. I think part of the reason why this generation struggles with depression and feeling empty is the fact that we tend to be very self-absorbed. Serving humanity and being part of the bigger picture is a essential piece of fulfillment in one’s life. In your quest for knowledge you’ll probably come to a conclusion similar yourself.
specter290 the problem is that capitalism itself is responsible for so much exploitation and destruction to our world. As well, as creating selfish mindsets like the one above where young people shun helping others and are only interested in themselves.
Here is what I really want: I want to become a fashion designer but I DONT go to fashion school, I want to be a writer but I an not doing literature degree and my mother wants me to be a civil servant and I am preparing myself for that. But deep in my heart, I want to help people and our earth, I want to eliminate (or at least I can try) child labor and educate the masses. I am from Pakistan and more than 18 million children still don't go to school and it's heartbreaking because if you aren't going to school, you either are working or in the hands of extremists. Both are very harmful. I am 19 years old, despite knowing my talents, I still can't decide what I am going to do with my life and it's depressing!
aashi khan I am your age, and in the same spot! I kinda figured what I want to do but I'm still not completely sure. I say just keep honing your skills and talents. You could even combine all your talents and skills (it would helpful especially in this generation. Even admirable.) You dont have to focus on just one thing. Something will come along and you can research different jobs that are for multi talented people. I definitely think you could combine your passions and help people. (Like make clothes for the children?)
Maryam Rodgers I know! That's exactly what I am going to do. I drew my future and for once and leave the rest and follow what I love i.e. fashion and literature. Good luck to you too! I hope you have a good life :)
Focusing on a single thing is dull to no end. Also not everyone shares that sense of community. The first step towards success is to give a damn and unfortunately for me I do not, so, down I go.
This is exactly what I've been thinking about lately. I've even had in mind that thing about Elon Must coincidentally. This video came out at the perfect time.
Nice video and music. PS : Did you (Alain de Botton) asked yourself the same question : what humanity needs the most before starting The School of Life ?
MY MISSION RIGHT NOW is to get enough views and subscribers to qualify for youtube's monitization policy,.. use that money to buy better teaching equipment and make all your children THE GREATEST GENERATION TO HAVE EVER LIVED!
Squatting 450 lbs is of no direct benefit. However, it benefits society if you can use that accomplishment to inspire and teach others to take care of their bodies as well.
I prefere the art of keeping a secret. Only my dearest loved ones know... Explaining my task to a wider group of people subconsciously demotivates me. Anyone else feel like that?
Oh man... I am that guy with all the creative hobbies and no mission. I have a job where I help people a lot but it's actually not that fun. I'm a reasonable man swept up in the missions of others and spread thin over my varied areas of interest. I have some deep thinking to do.
What If I can't do what this video proposes? What if my interests are too broad and not deep enough? Can I still be successful, somehow, without a mission?
I can't belive this! Yesterday I spent the hole day searching for tips and gidelines for finding my mission and today there is this! It's a miracle or The School of Life is spying me.
Can you please expand on what seriousness means to you? Maybe it's just me, but I find that playfulness is a much better attitude for focus and energy. And seriousness seems like a hampering of imagination.
Steven Kotler has his "Passion recipe". Four steps including what it´s mentioned on the video about Elon Musk, asking what can we contribute to the world, but before write down your interests, search for overlaps and meet people with same interests.
This is kind of discouraging for those of us who are disabled. I'd love to do a lot of things but can't do most of them. Having a mission only makes me feel more inadequate than I already feel because of the grand importance that society places on what a person does for a living.
This seems to completely ignore that Elon Musk co-founded the company that eventually became PayPal and got extremely rich there first about 1 to 2 decades before Tesla and space-x, but a universal payment system didn't seem to be included in this video.
Very romantic, yes, but not all missions of grand scale are that meaningful. Even with so much ambition, reality often restricts our options. Those who were lucky enough might pursue things as you say, but most people struggle even to have a decent life, no matter how hard they might work for it. However, people who pursue grand MISSIONS, cannot achieve them by themselves. Humanity, after all, depends on one another. No scientist, astronaut or entrepreneur would have never achieved their goals without people with missions of much more modest scale, people who keep society safe and working to ensure good conditions to thrive for people like Elon Musk. Humanity is less about a few well known individuals who make the change, and more about the chain of generations working together towards from accident to success.
I wish it were as simple as determining what others' needs are and applying your knowledge, skills, abilities, talents, and interests to addressing the needs. But experience has taught me it isn't that simple. There are bullies in the world who will obstruct you from achieving your mission. They are the ones to be wary of, for if they have power, they will undermine all your efforts to achieve your mission. Sometimes, they will be oblivious to what they are doing: an casual word said in innocence. Often, in contrast, they will be deliberate. And worse, they have a ready excuse: if you weren't so vulnerable, it wouldn't let them bully you. I don't have a solution to the bullies of life, excepting to avoid them as much as you can. That often means you expend a lot of energy in fleeing strategies and in protecting yourself. (Be care of this because sacrificing others to protect yourself is a frequent bullying tact.) Ruining a bully makes you just as bad as te is -- and then te can reveal you to be the hypocrite that you are. If te can make you into a hypocrite, te will succeed in ruining or at least injuring you.
Hello, TSoL! I'd be very happy to see a video on asexuality on your channel. Or maybe aromanticism. That's a very interesting topic in general (in terms of history, culture, representation in art) and also it may be important to people who feel this way. Keep up the good job!
Your mission of popularizing philosophy is quite admirable

Senior in high school. Well we have to have an art credit even though we don’t have a typical art class. So the options are band or floral.
I’d love to talk to someone about this. I want a future in education but I’m not sure where to start or if I should major in it. It’s become a drag to go to school when all you can see is the flaws. I feel like Sisyphus.

One of the most important videos on UA-cam
This one of the if not best videos done by The School of Life. Bravo!
I really feel like this video was directed at me. Perfect timing in so many ways. Thank you school of life 🙏🏻

Lol. Nice vid as usual, SOL. 💓
Excellent video. Very insightful.
Chris News yes but human are impatient and they want things to happen fast.
aashi khan your mission doesn't have to be part of your career. It's something personal that you do out of your ordinary life
I love your mission goals by the way! Don't give them up. The world needs more people like that.
Focusing on a single thing is dull to no end. Also not everyone shares that sense of community. The first step towards success is to give a damn and unfortunately for me I do not, so, down I go.
Thanks, needed some advice to help out my partner when they go through things of this nature
A mission sounds a lot more exciting than a goal
Thanks!
Very neatly described. Thank you.
This is exactly what I've been thinking about lately.
I've even had in mind that thing about Elon Must coincidentally.
This video came out at the perfect time.
This one finally made me decide to take on a grand mission: To change the music industry
Super cool illustrations in this video!
Nice video and music.
PS : Did you (Alain de Botton) asked yourself the same question : what humanity needs the most before starting The School of Life ?
MY MISSION RIGHT NOW is to get enough views and subscribers to qualify for youtube's monitization policy,.. use that money to buy better teaching equipment and make all your children THE GREATEST GENERATION TO HAVE EVER LIVED!
oh my goodness! Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major! : D great piece great vid
Not sure how it would benefit the society, but my mission is to squat 450 lbs.
Александр Мотузов hell yeah!
Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.
The “Strawberry Fields Forever” pizza in reference to north Liverpool at 3:15. I see what you did there Alain... 😂
¡Hermoso!
Oh man... I am that guy with all the creative hobbies and no mission. I have a job where I help people a lot but it's actually not that fun. I'm a reasonable man swept up in the missions of others and spread thin over my varied areas of interest. I have some deep thinking to do.
really wish uni lectures were delivered thru animation
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
My mission is the mission of the king from the worlds end.
To have a good time.
#themarkIIstanderd has all the answers. Each person has a mission for good and it will full fill them.
Suuure, because we all really really need a good and well thought out idea like the Hyperloop
What If I can't do what this video proposes? What if my interests are too broad and not deep enough? Can I still be successful, somehow, without a mission?
This one struck a chord.
I have this as a homework for something
Worth noting that people with "missions" can be hugely damaging to society.
MARAVILHOSO!!
I can't belive this! Yesterday I spent the hole day searching for tips and gidelines for finding my mission and today there is this! It's a miracle or The School of Life is spying me.
We need more of this Pewds. We need more nightmares. Urgently.305
Iiiiiiinteresting, thank you so muchhhh
I've been struggling with this for some time. It would be great to know *how* you can figure out your mission in life.
try to revert to ur childhood memories, they usually contain some of the unfiltered, undiluted toxic free dreams, visions and passions
Didn't he explain that in the video?
You don't wait for your mission. You decide.
Please do a video on how to free self of the guilt
I understand the way you feel. There's so many things I'd love to do but illness is stopping them. I hope you find some happiness In other things
Space X is like a world health organisation, only World Space Exploration Organisation
This seems to completely ignore that Elon Musk co-founded the company that eventually became PayPal and got extremely rich there first about 1 to 2 decades before Tesla and space-x, but a universal payment system didn't seem to be included in this video.
Is that the BWV 1048 (an allegro from the Brandenburg Concertos) in the Bach... I mean back?
Did't know it's possible to get two ads on one video, one after the other
the world needs better ingredients and better pizza.
True. Very idealistic, but far from realistic.
eluukkanen very true!
(Be care of this because sacrificing others to protect yourself is a frequent bullying tact.)
Ruining a bully makes you just as bad as te is -- and then te can reveal you to be the hypocrite that you are.
