If this this young driver was not fully eperienced in failed brakes, 110 years was way, way too much. Remember the rich kid who was drunk and killed several people. the excuse was that his family and wealthy and pampered him. The criminal justice system is not fair, money talks and bull## walks.

I am a truck driver, so I know he made mistakes, he panicked, but 10 years is fair, not 110!!! Now the company that did not have him drive with a trainer for the first 3 weeks does need to be held accountable!!

I'm thankful that his time was reduced BUT the sentence for a truck driver in Indiana who was under the influence of BOTH drugs and alcohol and also resulted in the deaths of 4 children didn't get as harsh of a sentence as this drivers reduced time. Our justice system needs to review penalties for crimes to insure fair sentences. This driver didn't intend to harm anyone and wasn't drinking or on drugs. I don't know if he knew he had brake issues before the runaway truck ramp OR after, but figuring that out would be the difference between deserving some prison time or none. If it was after then any prison sentence is unjust.

Truck drivers MUST be held accountable for mechanical failures. If they are not they would not be as careful (about their brakes).
10 years is probably a little lite. But he has to live with what he did. He passed 4 runaway ramps and killed 4 people. All because he didn’t want to be out of work for a few weeks. I think if he does all 10 that will be ok but he will likely be out in 5
There was a case in the Tampa area where a street racer hit and killed a pregnant woman. He got 24 years. If Mr. Madero was knowingly going 85 in a 40, I'd argue that this case is analgous to the street racing: they are both inherently dangerous.
Different state. Do people think all states have the same exact laws, sentences, etc? We don't have a one size fits all system for every state because we have states rights designed to meet the needs and feelings of it's citizens

There still could be 10 billion signatures. And the Governor might decide not to do anything about it. It's a miracle for people who don't know you to help you. Miracles are not mysterious but may be above one's comprehension. Thanks to the petitioners and the Governor.

They also need to investigate the company that Truck driver worked for, and make sure all their trucks are meeting proper safety standards, as well as if that company had prior knowledge to the drivers involvement due to the break failure that occurred, if so there may be some legal ground for a potential lawsuit for the victims/families against that company

The company was based out of Texas and hired at least 2 people with questionable English proficiency. The company also had over 30 safety violations prior to this incident. They have since gone out of business for some reason. You can guess why. 😑

Anyone who is blaming the company he worked for, or saying it was an accident and to shrug it off, has no clue how to drive.
They only know that they can step on the gas, or push the brakes, they cannot fathom a concept based around using the engine to slow down.
@DolphinsWIthIgloos Growing up in that area of Denver, that makes some sense. Truck drivers generally don't go down that stretch of I-70 at high rates of speed. I am not a truck driver, but couldn't he have used the engine to slow the truck down by downshifting when he was in the flatter area? He had at least 2-3 miles of fairly flat roads before the point of impact.
Glad someone came to their senses and reduced the jail time. They need to get rid of these mandatory minimums because they are just a cash cow for the private and state run prison systems
I did 30 months for possession with intent. 11 grams of marijuana in the early 00's because it was in 2 bags. That's two and a half years for having a $40 value of pot on me for personal use. 4 years later my state decriminalized it, and what I did time for is now not even a ticket.
Reagen did a number on this country with his policy, and people still seem to praise him for some reason.

Jail shouldn't exist at all unless the police are absolutely sure. There shouldn't be arrest ever. No one should be sitting in jail waiting for bail. If you are accused of a crime without any concrete evil you should be issued a subpoena for court. If you don't come defend yourself then they multiply the charges.

You want to believe that he’s some innocent person, that’s on you, but the reality is people burned alive because of his inability to act.
HIS brakes DID NOT FAIL! He did NOT know what he was doing, he LIED about knowing how to drive in the mountains. He over heated his brakes and then they failed. There is video of his brakes ON FIRE, miles before the crash actually happened!! He did nothing to slow his truck, he continued!! There is actually a video of him swerving towards a truck for absolutely NO a reason at all! He could have ditched his truck into the median or grass so many times it’s almost disgusting, but he decided to slam into occupied cars.

This isn't a one-off. There are plenty of people sitting in jail/prison with ridiculous sentences due to man-min requirements. This is just the one case that got so far out of hand that it exposed the flaw in the system. As long as they address this one problem they can go back to business as usual overcharging and oversentencing people.

This. Why on earth sentence the guy to jail? The company will hire another dude and that new guy will continue to endanger people in his place. *Do you realize that he was going twice the speed limit before the accident?
*Do you realize that he lied about his experience and qualifications to get his truck drivers license?
*Do you do realize that he had a history of driving his truck recklessly..
*Do you do realize that he disabled his trucks monitoring system so that his company couldn't track his speed?
*Do you realize that he failed to do the required maintenance on the truck (including the brake maintenance)?
*Do you realize that his brakes were already smoking on the way down the hill and he pulled over to notify a company representative and they told him NOT to continue driving! Instead of listening to his boss he got back in his truck and continued driving down the hill anyways..
*do you realize that he drove by TWO safety ramps designed to stop runaway trucks?
*Do you realize that several people reported seeing him driving recklessly on the highway before the crash?
*These people burned to death in there cars because of the truck drivers lies and negligence! He shouldn't even have a truck drivers license, he lied to get his CDL and he is horribly unqualified! A qualified driver would have used the emergency ramps! These deaths were NOT accidental but they were 100% preventable!

The level of understanding how the transportation industry eludes you, truck drivers are coersed and forced to go above and beyond by their companies whether its a safety issue hours violation load weights or whatever and almost always get no responsibilities from courts, its just easier to go after the truck driver then the owner of the company.

I'm a trucker and don't stand for him at all. He knew brakes were bad and drove, he passed runway ramps, passed multiple side places drive truck off and tried to run after crash. Deserves life for taking 4 lives.

The gross negligence was on the drivers part, that man's brakes long burnt up before the crash, there was no smoke in the crash footage coming from his brakes just before it happened. That is because they burned up a long time before then, driver either didn't pay attention or simply didn't do what we are all trained to do in that situation. You drive off the road the first chance you get. Whether up an escape ramp, onto a field or even scrap along a guard railing to use friction to slow it down and stop. Whatever the case you are to keep everyone's safety in mind. HE TOOK 4 LIVES, THEY WILL NEVER COME BACK.

He didn’t use three emergency exits…THREE!! He was flat out negligent. He had plenty of chances to avoid this and chose otherwise. I can’t believe he killed four people (could have prevented it) and gets TEN YEARS! 110 was crazy and then they went crazy the other way with 10. Having an opportunity to prevent it and don’t isn’t an accident…it’s negligence, and should be punished accordingly.
He didn’t have a CDL, he doesn’t speak English, and he knew the breaks were bad. He deserves at a minimum of 40 years.

Like many others, I'm no expert in law,& sentencing. That said...when I first saw the 110 year sentence I was caught off guard to say the least. The loss of life by those involved in the accident should NEVER be forgotten, but I don't believe that the initial sentence was justified.

He should have at least 10 years per each life he ended, the waste of skin rode his brakes until failure, then almost drove a pickup truck off the **LEFT** side of the freeway instead of using the runaway truck ramp.
He had every ability to prevent this, don't disrespect yourself and the people he killed by hoping for his sentence to be lessened due to the fact that he sniffled in court, if he was really so caring about his actions then he would have done everything in his power to prevent it from happening.
That sentence was ridiculous. Kudos to the governor for reducing it.
Folks that are defending this wreckless trucker need to understand the details. Truck brakes work differently. They heat up and you have to let them cool down. His heated up because he was riding them and then when he smelled the smoke he just kept pushing to make deadline. He caused them to fail by not pulling over. And he knew they were overheating, he called his boss! Then he just closes his eyes like a coward and rams into a truck killing 4 people.

Whats happens is the standards begin to lower…and in any aspect that it is a bad thing…aim low and you hit low…he should’ve been made an example…the pre-inspections and the ramps are in place for a reason
A 24 year old white lady from indiana purposely blew through a school bus stop and ran over killing 3 siblings kids and disabling a 4th . Showed no remorse , laughing at trial . She got like 2 years. I agree with the new sentence but he was going too fast and rode them brakes. He lied about his experience. I drove trucks for 14 years and going down a mountain you should be in the lowest gear and the brakes won't go out.He shouldn't be allowed to ever have a cdl again in life

That is my personal opinion. I'm not aware of any evidence that this is true, I just think this is the most likely scenario.

I would think 20 years would be better for him considering that he could of use the ramp or downshift as he was going down that dangerous hill. As a former trucker and knowing how dangerous them hills in Colorado is anyone who drove trucks know you are responsible for your truck. You have to do a pre trip inspection before getting behind that wheel. You know your brakes and how your truck drive 110 years is a lot of time but them people who lost loved ones behind a trucker that wanna drive 80 MPH on a Steep Hill deserve justice as well let him get 10 years and his company can do 100 years.

GREAT...the sentence, in the beginning, was ridiculous...our petition helped. This man did not deserve that original sentence. Some sentencing was appropo...but it needed to be fair. A little justice for this man makes the rule of law more powerful.

110 years is way too much for a crime like this, especially when you have murderers and rapists that are sentenced to way less than this. It's sad people lost their lives but the time sentenced didn't fit the crime. Reckless driving shouldn't get you life in prison.

Bottom line is the driver of this truck did commit a crime by driving 40 mph over the speed limit, and that atleast partly led to the crash that caused loss of life. I'm a Republican, I'm not trying to give him a free way like democrats constantly want to do to get money and votes. I'm just saying the sentence didn't fit the crime. I don't agree with parole after 6 years, I don't think he should get that. I do think a straight up 10 year sentence fits the crime though. Not 110 years. I also agree that he should never be able to hold a Class A CDL license again in his life.

This isn't about guilt. If someone gets 15 years for shoplifting and that sentence gets overturned, that doesn't change the fact the person is guilty, just that the original sentence was inappropriate.
It's easy for people to speculate on what a person should/could have done in an accident situation in which they are not involved. It is quite a different thing to be in an accident having to make split second decisions, that may or may not turn out to have been the best upon looking backward at the outcome. I've had the unfortunate experience of being in accidents that involved equipment failure or other conditions that were unknown until moments just before impact. There are so many variables and very little time in any immediately impending/possible accident situation (especially at highway speeds where unknown factors such as equipment failure are in play) for someone to be able to pinpoint, analyze and make the best of all decisions to preserve life and property with few if any seconds before impact. Looking back and being honest within my own heart as I can be, my last thought before any accident was to hold on for dear life, and pray everyone will be okay...vehicles can be replaced but not life or always health
This was a monumentaly horrific and heartbreakingly tragic accident with precious lives lost. My heart grieves for everyone who suffered loss and pray for everyone.

The company takes some blame for telling him to press on with caution, but he was behind the wheel and ignored the runaway truck ramps. None of this would have happened if he just took one of them.

Wrong. The prosucter is the one bringing the charges. They know they have a certain minimum but sill tried to charge him with 40+ counts. The prosucter is the one that makes up plea deals and has the power to agree to them. They also have the power to reduce charges aswell.
Mandatory minimums always shift power to prosecutors. The DA petitioned to have a lesser sentence only after the backlash she received . Prosecutor’s charging decision often dictates a sentence that a judge is powerless to avoid. Your statement about power to a legislature makes no sense.

The company is liable vicariously because the defendant was driving in furtherance of the his employer's interest.
If he was licensed to drive that truck, he had to pass a test on the safety laws. He was well aware on the speed limit for trucks that big and for him to be speeding at all is the problem. If he wasn't going well above the speed limit, his brakes failing wouldn't have been an issue. He would have been able to react faster.
I watched a video that showed all the signs (going up the hill) and then coming down it that warned of the dangers ahead. He didn't speak English very well so that's partly to blame. But seriously if he didn't know how to handle that truck, he never should have gotten behind the wheel. I hope he is never allowed to drive again once he gets out of prison.

I think the governor was moved by the four million people who petitioned rather then looking at the facts. There is no way he should get ten years for killing four people especially without looking at all the facts surrounding truck safety whether or not he done his due diligence to prevent this sort of tragedy.

If you research about the story, the driver was driving recklessly fast for his truck and load before the large downhill descent, and he inexplicably passed up a well-marked failed breaks ramp. He didn't deserve 110 years, but definitely deserved a major prison sentence of some sort.
This is NO ACCIDENT. The driver had EVERY OPPORTUNITY to get that truck off the road, but could not understand English, AS REQUIRED BY FEDERAL DOT LAW!!! Lessons learned by this verdict: DOT standards are pointless. Drivers need not be responsible. 2.5 years a life is pretty easy price to pay for negligence.

There was nothing split second about it. He also turned down a plea deal. And I've drove down that hill in my fully loaded truck thousands of times with no trouble. You gear down and let the engine do the work. Zero excuse for this to happen.

As a truck driver, this young kid (23) had no business behind the wheel by himself. Some companies don’t let fresh drivers behind the wheel until a veteran driver drives with them and signs them off. A co worker of mine flipped a truck because he lost all his air on a steep mountain, the person he was with didn’t ask if he knew how to drive downhill and the driver didn’t say he didn’t know how. Long story short he flipped the truck because he didn’t know he could down shift on an automatic truck or use his engine brakes. Luckily no one was seriously hurt as it was a private road.

Being from Colorado I remember the carnage he caused and what made it worse was its been revealed that during attempts at a plea agreement he only expected to be ticketed. Those nearby the crash risked their lives getting out the survivors out before they burned to death but four didn't and his tears were for himself not them. To many are worried about his future than the lives he took or changed forever and that's the problem since it ignores the fact he should never been behind the wheel to start with. Mederos couldn't read the signs he passed even before the devastation he caused and its why the warning that were posted to truckers on that part of I-70 and its runaway ramp were useless. Reducing the sentence should of been for the Courts and his victims to decide not politics as those rushing to his defense can't just say it was an accident like any other. What came down at those on the highway that day was more than just a vehicle but a juggernaut who in more experienced hands would likely of been just a truck stopped on a runaway ramp and its driver greatful that it was there....
His family can see him in jail , but the families of the lives lost he caused they will never see them again.

What safety violations? Guy was driving too fast, and was overheating his brakes more than half an hour before the accident. The brakes got hot, it wasn't a mechanical failure.

They tried to throw the book at and bury underneath the jail a Hardworking Immigrant Truck Driver in which his brakes failed and had a fatality accident ! The government need to put a system in all truck stop where they check all trucks to see if they have safety maintenance done. There are a lot of them that don’t do maintenance until it’s needed and it should not be like that! The key is safety first! If it is not done, they should pull that truck and cargo out of the roads!

Allot of 4 wheelers (cars) don't understand and keep getting in the way taking away safety distances and have to brake sooner while trying to keep weight and using engine brake power to balance a safe speed. And Everytime the car just gets in front we have to brake again not giving time for the brakes to cool down while using the engine brakes. And gets hot really quickly whick willead to brake failure.
