Jackson is the only man I am aware of that who is doing this kind of work--I share this video over and over and again--because as a woman few are willing to listen to these same words from me as they would be willing to listen to him delivering this same message as a man.

This is so important. Some years ago I became aware of my own misogyny and began the process of unlearning it. And over the years since I’ve challenged my male friends and family members when they’ve said or supported sexist comments or ideas and at first it was uncomfortable for them, but over time I think they began to really appreciate it and our conversations have really matured and so have our friendships.

Hi Imhotep! I think is so great you became aware of it and de-constructed yourself and your environment! Wanted to know, if its okay for you, how did this change process started? how so you became aware and what motivated you to change? It may help others going through that pathway too, or wanting to help loved ones to improve in this regard.
Hope you are having a great day :)

I am very lucky to have never learned misogyny. I wasn't raised by anyone, I had no friends until highschool when I met my best friend who was really popular, which made me really popular and I then gained a huge friend group, and this friend group was very special in that it was comprised of so many different personalities, that there wasn't a hint of judgement towards anyone. so there was no pressure to act a certain way. so i never learned those negative behaviors.

Because it’s one giant gaslight, misdirection and obfuscation designed tap into ignorant monkey brain bias and foment division. All in the aim of harvesting likes. The irony is that this guy is a raging narcissist.
It makes so many completely incorrect claims, misrepresents so many facts, strawmans arguments which sows division and masks real underlying causal factors.
      As a few examples:
Mothers are the greatest perpetrators of child abuse. Single mother families is the greatest causal factor to violent crime. Domestic abuse is not gendered. Men and boys are the greatest victims of violence by a long way.
Despite this, we live at the safest time in human history, largely due to heavy lifting by good men

Now I am a full-time student at Loyola University New Orleans and I came across this video as a part of our material and I'm like hey... I know what he is talking about. It is a great model and I think if somehow this training could hit the whole nation's population it would at least bring numbers down. I think right now, year 2020 would be a good time to somehow boost this video or do another one to bring it into the light. The country is very receptive right now and TED talks have become more and more popular. This material deserves more than 260k views.

Being opposed to Jackson Katz's misandry does not make one an "anti-female woman-hater". Jackson Katz conveniently ignores the millions of domestic violence victims who are men. He makes the situation worse, not better, by perpetuating the myth that domestic violence is something that only men do. We have plenty of data to show that women do it a lot too. We should support all victims of domestic violence, male and female.

      @john thehumanist,
Hogwash! You’re apparently a non-humanist. More like a *BLACK PILLER* misogynist androsupremacist TERRORIST.
Simply bringing up and lecturing on this *en masse social issue* in order to humanise men and boys, to re-educate away from all sorts of abuse types that target ALL sexes and gender identities, globally, but ESPECIALLY women and girls, to the point you *Dark Triads and Cluster-Bs* must be outed as you’ve chosen to NOT CARE and have actively perpetuated abuse against womxn, girls and children *so much* that it’s been a PANDEMIC for several DECADES and *worsens by the day.* It is not suggesting a “gynocentric” society at ALL.
Take your wannabe cult leader self out of such conversations IF you’re going to not assist toward positive change for ALL, meaning away from hatred and abuse of privilege toward EQUITY. Not gynosupremacy, just EQUITY. If that’s too much to expect and request, you’re ungrateful, dangerously unrealistic and insane.
Your lower comment, propagandising yet again, falsely claiming this lecture is a form of “misandry” is a bold faced LIE.
You need to *leave with your misogynistic propaganda* because plenty of viewers and listeners are learning - by the DAY - about you hateful, violent, harmful, criminal, traumatising, cowardly, weak, cowardly, ABUSIVE, DISORDERED b*stards!

He's talking about a social problem in this country from a broader point if view. Changes are made by a collection of people, just like positive changes this country has made in the past...from a broader perspective. He's right. Domestic violence and violence against children is out of controller. I agree with him, you can't change anything if people keep looking the other way. Change can start at the dinner table, or over drinks, or a conversation among peers but it needs to start somewhere.

Sadly, it looks like some of the women in this comment section are defending the male privilege because they may be as much of the issue as the men. I think he presents a fair look at many negative issues men face and how these issues may promote male violence. We raise our daughters differently than our sons. We don't teach our daughters to defend themselves against violence, while teaching (dehumanizing) our sons to be violent.

Women often get blamed for sexual violence towards them which fuels the idea that it’s not men’s issue. This is age old problem. It’s narcissistic abuse, like a nail in the coffin. It’s time for men to acknowledge their responsibility. I’m a CSA and SA survivor myself. I’ve never dated one man who did not become violent in some way or another and I was blamed for it. “No” has to be taken as a final answer. Blaming your victim doesn’t free you from your responsibility and actions.

I mean, I love the idea of free speech, but when you let certain parties have a voice ('cough'Trump/Hitler'cough') you sincerely open the door for these kinds of insidious ideas creeping up on people and causing them to take action - irreparable action sometimes, so yeah, I do think some form of intervention to keep these toxic anti-equality and similar parties from spewing their hatred so freely might be a good idea, wouldn't you agree?

Tell me, have you ever met a man who is attracted to every single woman he meets? I mean every single one, no matter her age or looks. I certainly haven't! Most people are only attracted to people they find attractive :) For me personally, a combination of masculine and feminine features is much more attractive than perfectly aligning with the binary gender norms.

However the problem is calling out or critiquing anything about the woman's behavior or actions as 'victim blaming' is not preventing these events as much as it might be more politically correct. I would tell the woman in my life not to walk down a sketchy ally at 4am dressed overly provocatively because that could actually save them in the short term. Yes I hope one day we can live in a world where that is no longer an issue but until then that 'victim blaming rhetoric' as unPC as it may be is potently saving lives and woman from being abused. Yes the conversation needs to be brought closer to the mind of the general population ofcourse but until then I won't be afraid of the political correctness.

all the videos of women discussing these issues, unless from an anti-feminist point of view, have so many more negative comments and dislikes. the fact that this time its a man speaking and the response is so different, says something about us as a society. • @Shirlyswirly
      @Shirlyswirly 8 років тому +1

David Archer that is because our society sees women as "too weak" to do any harm, and therefore if she hits someone its no big deal because she is just a woman who does not have the strength a man does and therefore he just has to suck it up and "be a man". this is a result of gender stereotypes, and this mindset is why women can often get away with that. If we as a culture work on less pressure for violence and strength in men, and learn to take women seriously the way we do with men, then we can work towards fixing this problem and almost all of the things discussed in this video, because this is the root problem.

My guess is that many people don't agree that to help solve this issue we need to address the problem of how men are brought up and how men act towards women in our society today. i agree with him because I strongly feel that if more individuals (male, female, other) are active bystanders in their communities and don't tolerate violence towards others, we wouldnt be facing such a crisis.

Shouldn't he just say men committing violence rather than specifically against women? In all honesty men are the cause of the majority of violence in the world. Against women and men... mostly men. The domestic violence in our society is probably mostly against women but the rest of the violence, gang violence and fights in the streets and bars, is male on male. 90% of our prison populations are men. Men are filling up our prisons at an alarming rate all due to their incredible violence (I'm not talking about bullshit drug charges). Why are we failing our men so badly? Why are we raising such violent beasts that die so young and go to jail so often. There really is a problem in our society with men being violent, but this kind of divisive talk doesn't really get at that problem, it makes it a feminist issue (although he does say a men's issue) by making it about gender violence when the problem with men isn't that they hit women too often... it's that they hit people too often.

Not exclusively a men's issue but men have a role to play of course. His idea that males need to promote healthy attitudes towards respecting women is mostly already practiced, at least from my experience. Most men would agree that violence against women is wrong and growing up we were taught that's it's never OK to hit a woman. Men who are violent towards their partners typically hide their behavior from others around them. If a women is in a violent relationship she may be the only person who can act to change that situation whether that be reporting it to the police or leaving the relationship, that is why it's seen to be a women's issue, because it effects women directly. This is even more exaggerated in reverse as violence against men is generally not even seen as a men's issue but as an issue only for the male victims and is largely ignored. So, while I agree with most of what Jackson says, I don't agree with him labeling it as a men's issue. Non violent men can be advocates but are not to blame for the actions of violent men. This is a societal issue, we raise boys to be tough and often teach them indirectly that success is achieved by physical or mental dominance. Mothers are just as responsible for instilling these ideas in boys as their fathers. For the most part this is balanced with teaching respect and good values, but for some it is not balanced, usually because the parents do not have these values and may even be perpetrators of violence themselves. You can't paint domestic violence with a black and white brush, it's just too complex for that.

This guy starts out trying to separate gendered violence from violence against women. He then proceeds to conflate the terms he was trying to separate. Let's use the language game:
    Mary beat John.
    John was beaten by Mary.
    John was beaten.
    John was battered.
    John is a battered man.
    Mary beat Jane.
    Jane was beaten by Mary.
    Jane was beaten.
    Jane was battered.
    Jane is a battered woman.
Most people who read the last sentence about Mary from the video and John/Jane in the examples I used would assume that all were beaten by a man? Why? Because people like this muddy the waters with the language they use. Another example:
ISIS killed nine men and one woman.
Nine men and one woman were killed by ISIS.
Nine men and one woman were killed.
Ten people were killed; one of which was a woman.
    Women are being killed.
The message is still: men are bad and are the victims of mens abuse. Violence is violence no matter who does what to whom. Take the gendered aspect out of the dialogue.

The overriding figures show that men commit violence against women and those women who commit violence against men have very often been the victims of male abuse for many years.

***** Nope, according to some other stats that you no doubt won't be happy with - the BBC...
'On average about seven women and two men are killed by their current or former partner every month in England and Wales.
Campaigners have called this death rate a "scandal" and say victims' appeals for help are too often met with apathy, disbelief and even hostility by police.'
Ray Rice. No idea who he is - just saw a vid of a guy being flicked then taking a full on KO punch to a girl 6" shorter than him, what should I think? Nice guy, or anger issues? What do you think?
Following from a UK Government Report.
'The latest statistics reported in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) suggests that 30% of women and 16.3% of men will experience domestic abuse during their lifetimes2'

Jeff D. Oh - here we go - try this unbiased version - every country in the world that publishes stats, has men committing a higher number than women. You just have to look at the stats from around the world, try Latvia, Iceland, France, Spain, Australia, UK, Denmark, Germany, Holland etc etc etc... It's true that the numbers are sometimes quite close - but it's ALWAYS more men than women...

Mike Watts Not true. The only "studies" that show that are done by biased ideologues. Actual research shows that it's equal.

Jeff D. So you are saying that every country in the whole world that publishes these figures is biased - but that some research that you have access to is unbiased? Sounds fishy to me, who are these unbiased researchers? Are they anonymous too?

Thank you for an insightful, meaningful presentation. I hope these ideas will be the norm in the future. I wish there were some action steps at the end that everyone can do once the talks are over, for those who are inspired for positive change.

When he first mentioned how it was a leadership issue, where men have to learn techniques to be able to talk out about this stuff without it being socially unacceptable... really hit a note.
I tend to get tired (and feel super preachy) trying to educate my friends about this stuff, it's too much work to change literally everyone around you when you grow up in these social circles, so i opted to just let most of my old friendships fizzle out. But these ppl are just someone else's problem now :-/

Hopefully though as time went on you were able to find friendships that were more on your level. Having the support of a likeminded group of friends can definitely make it easier to call stuff like this out.

I agree with this video! Wow coments.......... I already knew men suck. But I'm so shocked and disappointed by some women's comments..
Wow. Are you guys really women?... I feel terrible..... No problem? It is not gender issue? Seriously?

The world continues to become less violent. Equality is just a word. People cherish their uniqueness. Violence is everyone's issue as is kindness. That starts with empathy not peer pressure.

The problem with this is that men who don't engage in domestic violence or sexual abuse cannot relate to the problem, it is abhorrent to them. Men who do engage in either, are probably on denial about the issue or it is somehow justified in their mind.

That's right and that's what needs to change domestic violence in a hole is issue for all of us and to say it's not is insane how many people need to be traumatised or killed before any one listens it dose not only affect wemon it also affects man and children alot of boy and girls who grow up in these house holds are victims too and grow up to ether asult other man or woman or children a child wether boy or girl will ether be vilont or live in fear or have PTSD and other mantel problems dv and is a big issue that we all need to talk about we all need to stand up and say no I well not lesson to you Puting people down or saying that violence is an answer or that demeaning or degrading someone is acceptable that it's ok to victim Shame we need to stop ask what the victim did and tell the perpetrator that where not going to tolerat it any more regardless who's doing it

Thank you for continuing the conversation I need the practice.
A schema describes an organized pattern of thought and/or behavior.
And language patterns drive our patterns of thought and behavior.
It is quite well accepted that everything we do has the most often subconscious intention of meeting our needs behind it. not just in some cases in 100% of cases. And yes it is a static language that describes what people are and the idea of retributive justice that creates our violence.
