Smooth? He missed the switch on the first pass. 😁 I know how it goes. I hate the neck switch so much I wired my Harley Benton 12/6 for a stereo cable out to a customized A/B switch box (bidirectional) with a single stereo 1/4" input (instead of 2 A/B mono jacks) and standard 1/4 mono to the pedal board. Eliminates all the hassles using feet instead....green light, red light.....

@@Fred-vy1hm My bad, that was actually the pup selector (neck sw is above that between the two necks, set for "both"). They don't show it much in this video but Geddy switches to the 12 string neck of his doubleneck right after his last vocal part and stays there through to the end of the song. Also, both Geddy and Alex are playing the Taurus pedals at different times during the course of the song to fill in the keyboard parts.

The head editor had been asked for years to write an article about, out of all the musicians existed, vocals, guitars, drums, bass , keyboard and engineers… to make his perfect band. I used to play bass and learned a LOT trying to play Rush songs... it was a challenge to just play the bass lines without singing or playing keys with my feet. In this case, his double neck is a bass and a 12-string guitar. His talent was mind-blowing. Funny story about this song- after the album Caress of Steel didn't do well commercially, the studio forced them to travel to America to their offices and told them they wanted short radio-ready songs. They went home and decided to give them the finger and went home and wrote 2112, an album that the title song took up the entire first side! The next Album, A Farewell to Kings, featured this song, which essentially has two 2 1/2 minute introductions before getting into the actual song. They would not be pressured! As they said on Spirit of the Radio, "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, But glittering prizes and endless compromises, Shatter the illusion of integrity..." maybe for some, but NOT for them.

Indeed, Xanadu live (1981, Exit Stage Left Tour) is an epic performance to say the least, but I hope that you go MUCH FURTHER down the Rush rabbit hole. Personally, I’m partial to their earlier material. Might I suggest 2112 (side A) in its entirety (studio version from the album of the same name), YYZ( live in Rio), probably the only instrumental ever done, live where the audience actually sings to an instrumental. This is a totally unreal crowd. it’s a short song but it will blow your mind how much the crowd is into it. Also, doing a back-to-back reaction of Cygnus X-1, (Book I), from A Farewell to Kings, and Book II, (the entire Side A) from Hemispheres, should keep you busy for a while. Enjoy!

I grew up listening to the likes of Deep Purple and Rush so it is great to see new generations discovering these iconic performances. As you hinted at in your reaction, there weren’t really closely defined genres back then. Each band just had their own sound.
If you want something more obscure from back then, you might like to check out Caravan. An English band, part of what was known as the Canterbury scene from the late sixties, early seventies. I mention them because I think you will like the drummer, Richard Coughlan. Their most iconic track is a marathon 22 minute long song called Nine Feet Underground and I have always loved how the drumming drives the transitions throughout the song. The song was basically the whole of side two of their 1971 album, In the Land of Grey & Pink. Here is the link if your interested… ua-cam.com/video/JPtcdnCmrxg/v-deo.htmlsi=2WcMjYpYj-OGwEx5

Rush produced _many_ great albums with synthesizers, sequencers, and electronic drums.. Signals, Power Windows, GUP, Hold Your Fire… and I love all these albums. But my favourite era of Rush is analog Rush… back in the day, when The Professor still had chimes, tubular bells and an actual fckn glockenspiel. For me, even though the album Exit Stage Left was basically stitched together from different performances, it’s still the best live album of all time.
Neil originally started with Slingerland, moved to Tama drums, experimented briefly with Ludwig in the 90’s, and went with DW for the rest of his career. His Tama drums from the early days still sound the best. Sorry DW. (although to be fair, ESL was also recorded with analog equipment. This was before the digital age. That alone would’ve attributed to the fantastic drum sounds.)

@@setonhillstudios hey there new friend! How is ya?
Yes. After Neil replaced original drummer John Rutsey and Rush got their very first recording contract and realized that they actually had money to go buy good new gear, Neil went with Slingerland. Why wouldn’t you? Those were amazing drums!! Even after he made the move to Tama, his original Slingerland snare remained his “secret weapon” in the studio for years.
I hate to admit, his DW kits sounded horrible to me. I just didn’t get the tone and tuning of those toms at all.

@@caryd67 I’ve never played an a DW kit so not sure if they are hard to tune or what. I would love to sit down at one of his massive kits and just have fun. Probably wouldn’t know what to hit first!

@@setonhillstudios I played an absolutely beautiful DW kit a while ago; it was like a blue oyster shell wrap finish; really pretty. And they sounded great. Really great. The way they tuned up was effortless. I fell in love with this kit, just couldn’t afford it. Being wrapped, they were from the “middle” line of DW’s offerings. Kinda like a Fender Squire.
Regarding Neil’s drums, I feel like he just let someone else tune it and just went with it, which boggles my mind because his toms sound like bongos 👎🏻

QUEENSRYCHE, do Effin QUEENSRYCHE! Their Operation Mindcrime album is second only to PINK FLOYD’S The Wall as best Rock concept album of all time. One could make a case for RUSH 2112 except for the fact that it’s only 1/2 concept. The video everyone goes to on YT is Take Hold of the Flame live in Japan. I strongly urge you to check out their other work, like the albums Rage For Order and Empire. Mindcrime is universally recognized as their Masterpiece work. Forget doing it on your channel if you’ve never heard it. Pick a day and an uninterrupted time to put on your headphones and listen to the whole thing in its entirety as it was meant to be heard. Have the lyrics in front of you too so can follow the story. Some people make the novice mistake of watching one of the several official music videos off the album. This is out of context. You need to hear the entire thing, like watching a movie at the theater. That’s what the band intended. It’s simply incredible. I guarantee it.

Best 3 piece band ever? In my opinion they are, though if someone were to argue for ELP I wouldn't think they were crazy, and there may be other credible candidates I'm forgetting. I was lucky enough to see them twice. Best current 3 piece? I'd have to say The Warning, though that's a totally different area of rock, more like The Who than Rush. I do enjoy listening to drummers react because I know so little about drumming it teaches me to listen to things differently, so thanks!

Meh.... to the fantasy Rush. "Power Windows" is where my favorite period lies. Some deep thought, and emotional lyrics out of Neil on that one, and the surrounding albums (Grace Under Pressure, Hold Your Fire, Presto, Etc.) but Power Windows is the one album I look at and listen to and realize there's not a single "filler" track on. Every song and every lyric is just as powerful as the one before it, and Neil didn't waste time or breath preaching Ayn Rand politics, or going off the deep-end with the fantasy images.
I also used to love DT and Images and Words is a great album but find people who are fans of BOTH Dream Theater and Rush, tend to only focus on early and extremely late Rush. After listening to Rush for so long and also a band called Symphony X, I realized LaBrie just kinda sucks really. Yeah he hits notes, but he lacks soul and emotion when he does; it's almost cookie-cutter singing where you know he's going to sing a certain way so you just fade it into the background while he sings mediocre lyrics about asinine details and makes a melodramatic scene out of it. Then you get the chemistry between all of them and ask yourself "how many keyboardists does it take...?" because DT seemed hellbent on finding that out! Once Kevin left, their downward spiral began IMO... then you look at Rush and realize these guys were family and treated each other like family for 40 years.
So outside of some musical influence crossover, DT and Rush are basically night & day as far as bands go.
