After so many years... can't believe I'm watching someone ACTUALLY playing the real solo and not replacing original licks with lame phrasing. You're insane dude. Saludos!
@@slash2220 Actually a correction on my last comment, this one has a mistake as well. After the initial 10 11-P-10-P-8 (pull offs) he plays 10 on the second then 9 on the third and 8 on the second. The original slash versions plays that 10-9-8 with 10 on the the third 10 on the second and 10 on the third again (10-10-10).
The one solo that consistently makes my hair stand on end. The absolute chaos at the end of this song is probably what I’d show to aliens if they asked what rock and roll was.
"I've been obsessed with this song for three straight days..." It's ok. I've been obsessed with this song for three straight DECADES. This song made me want to play rock and roll as a kid.
I've been delving into Slash recently and falling in love with his playing. However, some of his songs are damn hard. I'm tired of Anastasia, a very difficult piece for me, especially the solo parts. It's a pity I only recently appreciated Slash!
Man, I love Anastasia, I just got that part down, where it's 10-12-13-12-10-13-12-13 starting on the B and E strings and so on, finally! I just used Guitars Pro, slowed it down and worked my way up from there. I know you're into Slash but check out Alter Bridge, Metalingus and Blackbird, especially, is a bi***! Good luck brother, cheers and happy playing!! 🤘
I feel the second part of the main solo melody is the bit where I always mess up just before the verse riff. Another few songs that are really challenging to get right are Halo's riff and Too Far Gone's bridge riff.
To me the greatest part of this solo and whole album is that Slash was just 20 years old when they started recording Appetite. The talent and maturity in his playing at such a young age is unreal.
It seriously is. I'd say he was a phenomenon similar to EVH and Hendrix and David Gilmour. Imo. To be that good at that age isn't from just tons of practice. It's like a built in instinct or something. Just magic.
When I saw the title of the video, I was hoping for a certain part of the solo. As soon as I hit play, I thought "YES. That's exactly the part I was thinking!". Nice video and thanks for shedding some light on a part of the song that never gets the attention it deserves
Same here, that part of the solo always blew me away. My other favorite Slash moment is the solo-ish riff at 2 minutes into "Civil War". It sounds like he's playing guitar with a flame thrower!
The Paradise City solo is one of the very few that still blow me away after years of playing. Most solos can be broken down to a few sections where you can kinda map out what the player was doing, but this is just on another level, you can tell he wasn't mechanically thinking of any of the phrases, they just flow so perfectly.
Every time I hear this tune it reminds me of the opening of the Rock of Ages movie. Gives me such a euphoric feeling to think of this song filling up a stadium and the crowd going wild! 😊
I dig your content and thank you for your time, detail, and passion. This solo is a real hellraiser! Love the detail of how he goes from bridge to neck pickup as it goes to ludicrous speed.
Learning these old solos is a freaking fantastic idea! I've been working on Cliffs of Dover, but that's a BIG chunk of stuff to try to chew. This seems so much more achievable.
I've played this song live many times but never bothered learning the solo - it's just too bonkers! I really should some day as it's an absolute monster of a solo. A perfect halfway point between Chuck Berry rock n roll and EVH shred. Incredible playing.
Amazing! This lick has terrified and amazed me for decades and maybe the time has come to finally tackle it with this great breakdown of yours. Thanks.
One of the best guitar solos, so much energy in it, it's just wild. And thats exactly the part where i am stuck, so thanks for this video! Fun fact: my wife (non-musician) is a huge GnR Fan but actually never noticed the solo at the end, until i pointed it out for her. Guess she was just focusing on axels voice.
I've played over 36 yrs and it took me a solid 3 to 4 days to get it right and the speed. I can tell you that you have to hear it and the patterns can throw you a curve so do less than he was like just a few notes and when you get to a tie in focus on it you will get it but it takes time and patience so don't give up.
Excellent lesson, and you absolutely nailed the solo, but the best part of the video for me is the comment section. Everyone seems to have the same love (and fear) of this solo that I do. It’s odd to me that it’s never listed in the best solos category, because I think it’s one of the best.
Bravo my friend! That’s a spot on transcription. Man that same phrase where he switches to the neck pickup has always been intimidating to me too. Gonna give it a shot now that I see it’s possible for a mere mortal to play it correctly.
This was very well done, when learning this solo i quickly realized the exact notes wasn't as important as just getting the right scale and feel during some of the blazing parts, but you got really darn close to the exact ones anyways!
He was 21 when he recorded and it was released, but joined guns at 19. So he wrote a lot of these riffs as a teenager. Oh, and he didn't even start playing the guitar until he was 15.
You did well breaking down this solo. Not an easy job as Slash's style is pretty spontaneous and freestyle. I've tried to mimic this solo many times but gave up😀 Thanks for the upload.
I tried to learn this a long time ago with some crappy tabs before youtube, I think I finally got is somehow but suretanly not right and then I just improvised whole outro for a video which came out pretty good. Too scared to get onto this now, blows my mind.
Great video! There’s this ongoing rumour that it wasn’t actually Slash playing the outro solo, but a session player instead. Interesting idea. I also always thought this solo was stylistically different from most of his other solo’s.
He used a session musician? Seriously....lol?? If you watch videos like Live at the Ritz where he's 1. Out of his mind on H, and 2, DOES play these solos the way they are on the album...its ridiculous to even consider he would need to use a session musician for anything! It's not like he got tremendously better between the time appetite was recorded and those early shows were played
Never used a session guitarist... That's the most bs thing I've ever heard. Slash talks about how hard this solo was to record but still falls into his style of soloing alot - especially if you pay attention to the snakepit and smkc solos.
Another great video! This solo always impressed me even before I played guitar. I never realized there were chromatic licks in there as well as a quick diminished lock too. This breakdown is super helpful and informative!🤟🎸
Thanks for demystifying the only bit on the album that I gave up on over 30 years ago. Still, my fingers now won't be quick enough but glad to see it's possible for the young and able :-)
Thank you so much for this! I'll probably never be able to play it but its so cool to be able to see what Slash was playing and make sense of it, hopefully I can use some of this to play fast licks in a new way
I love how you are teaching us a way to play this amazing solo and at the same time you're teaching about the Micro-Chaining learning method that you did some time ago, this is perfect for players who want to learn this
