I already have a general bonding video but people constantly ask about specific species bonding or just don't find it in searches. So, I thought I'd make species specific bonding videos!
These tips will apply to most parrot species, however there are some specific tips for bonding with conures too!

I’m a new conure owner and I’ve been struggling with bonding. My bird was already hand tame but she hasn’t shown much interest in spending time with me unless I have food. I lost a budgie I was very closely bonded with a few months ago, and this lack of bond with my new bird has been very painful and lonely. I’m hoping I just need to keep giving her time. I picked her out because of how playful she was with me at the breeder, but she hasn’t shown a drop of interest in me since then. It’s been hard.
Birds can be totally different in different environments! At the breeder she was with someone who had been there since she was born and also with flock mates!
Now she’s elsewhere and needs to learn to trust you as her new flock mate!
The amount of time can vary to build a bond but food and treat motivation is usually the first place that bond forming begins. Passive bonding also helps
It may be difficult but you may need to put your own feelings second for a while as you begin to form a bond with her as it may take a while!

@@endemosdostojevski I am so happy to say that yes, we are very very close, and she really did just need time and help. Things I did that helped: I sit on the floor (in my country this is typical) so I put her cage on the floor too, so we were level and she could always see me. This got her to be in the same area as me within a couple of weeks. 2. I got her fun toys and put them in all the places I spend the most time, so there was always something to do if she came over. 3. I found millet to be her ride or die favorite snack, and for a couple months, I just gave her a snack (calling it “snack” out loud) every time she got near me.
It took a long time. I brought her home in May but I feel like we didn’t really get close until August. Now, she’s like a puppy. She’s always on me, playing in my hair, chirping in my ear, diving under pillows and popping out, rolling around on me-it’s absolutely night and day. I can pick her up like a phone and she loves it.
My friend framed it in a way that helped me a lot; intelligence wise, I have a 2 year old, but maturity wise… she’s also a toddler! She’s a baby, she doesn’t know things! It helped me be patient and just wait her out. I kept feeding her and talking to her and now she gets mad if I so much as go to the bathroom without her.
It feels like an excruciatingly long wait, but it is worth it and it does eventually work out. And now I have decades with her to make up for those months of waiting!

After watching other UA-camrs before I got Sky (pineapple), they all recommended that slow and easy approach when bonding. I had 5 Green Cheeks to choose from at the store. 3 normals and 2 pineapples. Sky was the only one who couldn't get on my hand fast enough. She scurried up my arm and sat on my shoulder. I bought her immediately. I was lucky. I didn't have to go through the regular bonding process. We bonded VERY quickly. 3 years have past and I have a very friendly bird who loves everybody, except my girlfriend. And even then, Sky is friendly to her when I'm not around. We literally just got our first conure and we had been warned how she's a spaz and a biter. Got her home, introduced her to my kids and our 5 budgies, and she's totally the opposite of what they claimed lmao

My Conure is pineapple , when I sit in my chair. Attacks my mobile if I’m looking at it. Or bites me, when he wants attention 😂
They definitely know how to get our attention when they want it! Mobiles are often a source of interest! (All of our conures love mobiles and chewing cases)
This is kind of an older post, so I don't know if I will get any advice, but I'm trying anyway! I have had my green cheek, Miller, for about 12 years (got him when he was a baby.) We have always been well-bonded. About 7 years ago, we adopted an Indian ringneck. It took Miller a while to get used to him, but eventually he tolerated him well enough and they actually share a large cage. The ringneck is obsessed with Miller and only wants to be with him. It has turned out well bc I have had 2 children during then and now and have also been a full-time caregiver for my mom. I was glad Miller wasn't without a buddy to keep him company while I was very busy. I still interacted with him every day, but not the same bc he would go out of his way to bite my kids and my elderly mom. The ringneck is very affable, sweet, and friendly to everyone, so I don't worry about my bond with him. But since having kids, it has been hard to have the same connection with Miller that I used to have. I completely understand why, and I'm not surprised. But I don't know how to fix the bond with the ringneck involved. I feel like Miller is half bonded with me and half with the ringneck (whose name is Jr. by the way). But he is not sweet with me anymore, he bites me all the time. It makes me sad and I want to put in the work to fix it. Should I separate them when I take them out of the cage to spend indovidual time with them? Jr. screams the whole time when he can't see Miller. Any advice appreciated.
It sounds like a tough and complex situation honestly. There’s probably a bit too much to go into in a comment reply.
Starting from a clean slate mindset with miller will probably help along with working on plenty of bonding and training with him.
Having separate training and some outings may be helpful but that’s entirely upto you.
Working on soft targeting to help with the biting and identifying exactly why he is biting may help too.

It’s definitely not too late, but you do need to be prepared for it to potentially take some time and effort!
Some birds bond instantly others take a while others only learn to tolerate!

Thank you so much for this video. I've had a Patagonian conure (just found out their breed) for about 4 years now. I've been looking for a video like this for a long while. I'm glad i found it. Obviously if i want to get to where you have with your birds its going to take a while. How would you suggest getting them out of their enclosures without forcing if they don't know the step up trick?

Thank you! I'd work on target training to start with for that. It'll allow you to direct them around/also build up a bond and some trust!
You could also try step up training with a short perch and sleeved hand if they are nervous of hands. I have loads of videos on various training techniques and on conures!

Just adopted a bonded pair that needed a rehome due to the owner working more hours and noticed behavior changes like the female starting to bite ears after Years of being a comfy shoulder rider so they were put up for re home. I was very closely bonded to a sun conure I had before she passed away whom I had since she was a baby. This pair is 5 and younger. Hoping to moderate the ear biting as fhays not a fun negative behavior.
It can be a difficult thing to deal with!
The best way would be soft targeting, using biting protocol and seeing if any other factors are at play leading to the behaviour!

Quick question, do you recommend a corner blanket inside the GC cage? I got my GC and he has one in his cage that he loves and sleeps in.

I'm not sure I've heard of a corner blanket before? Do you mean like a cozy hut?
We don't really recommend them as they are often made from unsafe materials that can cause crop impactions. They also can promote hormonal behaviour.
For conure comfort when sleeping we recommend multiple high up perches so they can pick from them and a "cuddle toy" (natural materials) to one side so they can rest one side on it if they are solo in the cage!

I have had 2 green cheek conure and both the same in the nippy department it gets better and when there babies like I have they nip a lot more learning what they can get away with and what to hard an both of them kinda oit brew it although they still nibble on me all the time but it doesn't hurt they learned what's to hard except of you got a scab or something omg these little guys will bite it for sure

For sure, they are exploring and learning their boundaries. Also the more bonded they get it seems the less often they try to actually bite and just nip. What helped us a bit with one of our rescues is using soft targeting so she learned to reduce her bite force!
@@TheParrotTeacher yeah it gets worked out takes awhile now she just kinda chews on my finger not hard but like she teething almost like a baby the only time its a little to hard is when I get home from work get her out she gets really excited an nips a little to hard I tell her it's to hard an raise my voice a little she getting it lol at least she bonded to me an wants to be with me all the time now I need to teach her about toes an feet! Lol

I got a year old green cheek conure and I have had him for a month now and I can do pretty much everything except petting him he is scared of my hands I have tried everything to bond with him but all he does is groom me and porch on me what can I do differently?
It’s still early days for you and him! Not all conures will like to be petted, many just like to cuddle!
I’d suggest giving him more time, doing some work around hands with him and also checking out my video about how to pet and cuddle your bird!
Hi my conure is a rescue and I’ve been struggling to get him to trust me for over a year now, i talk to him daily and live my life near him every day but he still won’t let me get any part of me closer than a foot or 2 away from him, in or out of his cage:( any advice for me?? He sees me pet my other bird on the occasion but he still won’t trust me😢
It can take lots of time and patience sometimes with rescues, it can take ages at times!
Spending time near him is really sensible.
My advice would be find something high value and just sit near the cage with it through the bars and let him come to you. It may take ages so be prepared for arm ache. Or establish a treat bowl and drop treats in there with your hand close.

I have a question, my conure’s head is full of pin feathers that it never seems to grow out of and it’s usually around the same area. What can I do? Bathing it doesn’t really do much and I can’t help it cus it doesn’t allow me to touch it most of the time.
Hey Shirleen,
This is actually a pretty common problem, especially with conures. They find the pin feathers on their head difficult to preen themselves and usually rely on other conures to get them for them.
My advice would be continue with the bathing, maybe add a little avian tea into the spray and work on contact training with your conure. This may mean she will allow you to touch and loosen them after a while!

Okey so I got a 7-8 month old green cheek and he’s super scared of hands and humans in general, I’ve let him settle for about 2 weeks and he’s still scared of me any advice?

I’d work on the tips in this video mostly.
It may be worth trying interactions with the cage door shut. Sometimes it can make a bird feel more secure to have a barrier between them and us!
Target training and passive bonding are usually the best steps and it can take a while sometimes!
Hi, we've just got a Black Capped Conure and she has bonded very quickly, more so with me than my wife, she constantly falls asleep with me while cuddling and scritching, should I encourage this behaviour or will I have problems when she matures? Thanks and we love your videos, we've learnt so much about Conure behaviour and body language already! Thanks again

Scritching is perfectly fine around the head and neck. Cuddling is one of those things that is mostly ok but depends on how it's done. Conures love to cuddle, it's something almost all of them do!
I'd say cuddle, but try to keep your hand (I'm assuming hand) immobile. They will also cuddle against your neck, body etc which is also fine. The thing that usually trigger hormones is being completely enclosed or movement against the wings/back!
You can always scale back the cuddling if she becomes hormonal!

@@GinnyAndBuds Yeah, cupping a little with the hand is fine, I do so with Olive as she loves it. I just make sure I do it lightly and any movement is just light petting on the head/neck, never below!

Can I ask a question. I was talking to a friend who has cockatiels because I was thinking of getting a Conure, and she said they are really dusty birds. I have quite severe allergies I'm allergic to furry mammals so thought a bird would be ideal, but now I'm not so sure!
Hey there,
Cockatiel's are very dusty birds as they have powdery down! This is their way of protecting their feathers.
However conures are much less dusty birds as they aren't. Although they will produce a little.
You could also use an air purifier to help keep the dust levels down! Many parrot owners do as it's good for the parrots too!
