    Renaissance one of the most talented bands ever. Criminally underrated in comparison to Yes and Genesis but no less magical. That classic lineup never recorded a bad album. Annie is phenomenal but others are great also. Jon Camp a bassist of Chris Squire caliber. It's so sad that we'll never see that lineup again cause John Tout and Michael Dunford passed away. What a loss...

    • @alexizraev
      @alexizraev 2 роки тому +8

      True!
      I also think the original lineup deserves more recognition... Both of their only albums (Renaissance and Illusion) are fantastic imo.

      I think that Jane Relf is somehow underused on the debut album and that's a pity cause she has a really nice vocals. But apart from song Wanderer and partly Island she did backing harmonies. Male voice by her brother Keith dominates. I never owned their second album Illusion but heard several songs from it. Face of yesterday on UA-cam with Binky Cullom for instance. Also strong vocals but lower timbre than Jane or Annie.

    • @alexizraev
      @alexizraev 2 роки тому +5

      @@user-cj4df7vs7w It truly feels like Jane's vocal ability was underused in most of the songs in their first two albums especially when listening to all the albums that came after with Annie.
      With that said.. on the arrangement spectrum, in the first two albums I think Jane's voice was perfectly adapted into the songs. And I also like Keith's singing in these albums.
      Btw I really recommend you the song "Golden Thread" from Illusion. In my opinion it's a masterpiece.

      That guy Jon Camp also provided some good backing vocals like Chris Squire did in Yes supporting Jon Anderson. Take for instance Ocean Gypsy from Scheherazade album. Or Ashes Are Burning title track. When he and Annie sing choruses it sounds so gorgeous.

    Any American kid who came of age in the early to mid '70s would have dreamed of walking down the street holding hands with a girl who looked like Annie Haslam. Her look epitomized what "casual glamor" was in that era. That she was such a gifted singer is a double-dose of superlatives.

      Yeah it’s called talent, today so called singers have a computer to thank for their voices being heard in tune. Most of them can’t hold a note or sing in tune live and prerecord their vocals for live performances and people are paying fortunes for the privilege of watching these talentless performances. 🙄

    This was one of my favorite ever progressive rock bands, and I began following them in the late '70s, towards the end of their heyday. I actually was part of the audience for the Carnegie Hall live double album concert. Annie has a voice like no other, and I loved John Tout's piano virtuosity. As much as I love this live material, I wish I could hear it in its entirety- this is like a teaser, not getting to hear the whole thing, but I'll take it, since there's so little out there. Long live the memories of Mickey Dunford and John Tout, RIP

    Annie Haslam has an amazing voice. Renaissance just wouldn't be a band without her powerful vocals. Did you know that she is a classically trained soprano vocalist with a five octave vocal range?

    I love dark music...it is so dramatic...I feel sorry that the musicians of today are taking less risks...I really love psychedelia...experimental and avant garde and I love this kind of music too...it is ethereal....it has energy, vibe...fun..It has no real genre connection in my mind. It is just unique, creative and coming from a real place in an artistic soul. I know that it is progressive music but it just sounds like quality music, if that were a genre.

      It was called progressive rock, Marisa, a genre of rock which was must on top on the 1970's. (In the case of Renaissance band, a little mixed with pop rock from that period).
      Progressive rock is a fantastic genre of music, often associated with classical and jazz, but became unjustly criticized for being too complex and played by overqualified musicians, what actually should be looked as qualities, not as faults.

    John Camp é um baixista do nivel de Chris Squire: melódico, insinuante, as vezes dominante e que alterna a condução do ritmo com linhas próximas a um solo e não apenas à marcação!

    Thankful to have this, but wish that the instrumentals weren't edited out, especially the intro and outro on 'Can You Understand'. Can you say rhythm section. First learned of Renaissance listening to the WNEW broadcast of Live at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 1976. Have been a fan since and was fortunate enough to catch them live a couple of times. Over the years, I've had a difficult time convincing some of my friends of their greatness, but I guess like most orchestral rock of the time, you either got them or you didn't. I most definitely did.
