Hey Liam, sorry to hear you’re going through this rn. Love your content and wanted to share something with you that might help. Have you ever looked into earthing/grounding as a remedy for your epilepsy? I’m sure you have a decent enough understanding of electrical current to know what happens when our equipment isn’t grounded. Well the same thing happens to our bodies! And epilepsy specifically sounds like it could be caused by electricity/energy that isn’t being discharged properly. There’s some solid documentaries here on the tube. Check it out when you get a chance! Hope you feel better 💫

It takes courage to let yourself be vulnerable, thank you for doing so. I am wholly unqualified to speak about your condition but since you've concluded that having an open discourse about it may be a helpful means of navigating this struggle, I support that and once again commend you for choosing not to shrink before what must be a fearful time in your life. We are often unaware of the obstacles those around us face, and I think in the broader sense, fostering a culture of empathy, which I believe to be what you are now doing, is healing for all of life in this mortal coil. God speed!
*The hacky, heavy handed neo-Shakespearean brooding prose, the cost of being earnest in a post-ironic milieu, is meant to, at once, speak to you earnestly and to, at my own expense, hopefully, give you a chuckle at what a pretentious dweed I sound like. As is my excessive, wholly unnecessary use, of, commas. Did it work???? I made it worse, huh?

    • @LiamKillen

Yeah that point about shrinking is something that I can already sort of feel happening and i'm very aware of it.

Liam I’m truly sorry to hear about this. I had two tonic clonic seizures in 2021, preceded by partial seizures, which were undiagnosed. The seizures then caused a mental health crisis due to medications, stress etc. Now things, thankfully, are under control.
Seizures are scary and suck, period. So I feel you and my heart goes out to you. For me stress is a big trigger, packing my schedule, not taking care of myself. So I think taking time off is a great move.
Thanks so much for sharing and making music it is a huge inspiration. 💪

I got diagnosed in my 30s, it's been about 8 years since I had a grand mal. My auras are huge deja vu and feeling like someone is in the room with me when there is no one there. Last seizure I was running away from no one before I blacked out. It's funny, I've had this experience in my youth but never had an actual seizure so thought it was just interesting, confusing, but interesting.
Seizures terrify me, I completely black out and it takes me weeks to physically and mentally recover. Several of my vertebrae have been crushed by my convulsions, and my shoulders pop out.
I too have nothing on MRIs, and EEGs. I'm not light sensitive. It's a mystery. I for sure abused diphenhydramine (Gravol) for sleep which I found lowers seizure threshold and I ascribe that to my episodes.
I fear having another seizure, share the same emotional despair I can see in you in this video. I've sobbed in front of my neurologist, had long term anxiety because you never know when it will come back.
I am going to heed your experience and cut out caffeine again. I also have ADHD and started taking stimulants, so that plus caffeine is probably asking for trouble.
Obviously cut out the alcohol entirely. Get good sleep, and maybe try and find a therapist to talk to. I had PTSD for a long time after my last seizure, it helps to talk it out. I was left with an existential crisis after my post ictal experience. It was horrible, terrifying, and just destroyed my faith in reality.
If you ever want to chat it out with a stranger let me know. I hope your medication adjustment works out ❤

Lots of love for you here Liam. That sucks. Many years ago I worked in a hospital for kids with very severe epilepsy. It is can be such a debilitating condition. But... there's every chance you'll find a way through this. So many neurological conditions are a medical mystery still, with no easy answers... but it's often the case that a combination of new/different meds plus further diet and lifestyle changes can make a radical difference. Hang on in there. Meanwhile... absolute yes to the collaboration vids, they are awesome and I'd love to see more.

I found out I had epilepsy 20 years ago on my first date with my wife. After that first grand mal seizure, I had to take it easy for quite a while and change my approach towards music myself. I've home recorded probably a hundred albums since then but I haven't found an easy way to promote my music so I don't have many people check it out. It really changes your priorities when you only make music for yourself. But I have been seizure free for 18 years.

I went through my teen years in Saskatchewan with Epilepsy and the “grand mal” seizures are scary and very painful. I’ve been lucky to go without one for over 20 years but there are times when poor sleep and lots of stress cause that “aura” and that’s a strong warning for me. @@LiamKillen oh snap! that's great news! could you do a small tutorial on how to use the roll feature on the TR-6S? i see the word "roll", but I can't figure out how to use it... Also, a good topic id love your take on is using a drum machine in the place of a drummer, and what you would use for gear. the TR-6S is not really easy to use as a programmable drum machine to play along to "songs" that aren't linear electronic builds and drops, but it's what I'm using. it's kind of annoying to try and do as you have to go thru the whole song and changing variations and fills, and even another pattern because of the cap of variations per each.. id love if you made a video demanding Roland put a 'song mode' on the TR-6S! ... and also customizable colors for all modes. I'm tired of the light blue for my variation colors... and unrealistic, but prolly possible, make it so there are 12 tracks that you can shift between, one set and another set of 6 tracks on the TR-6S 😅..

Thinking about you and hoping you're able to get some relief and more answers soon. I know very little about epilepsy, so I won't chime in there, but anxiety is something I'm more familiar with than I wish. You described some aspects of anxiety so I thought I'd recommend the thing that helped me manage it more than anything else; meditation. If you're already doing that, then I'd say keep it up. If not, I can't recommend it enough. It's not a quick fix , you gotta keep at it, and may not have much impact on the epilepsy, but could help with the feelings that surround it at least. I was having regular panic and bad anxiety attacks where the fear of how I felt during them increased their frequency. It wasn't until I was able to overcome the fear through meditation that I was able to reduce the frequency. Now it's more rare. Hope this helps in some way. ❤

@@LiamKillen You’re welcome, Liam! Anytime. Ottawa’s good thanks (very welcoming arts community) and I’ve been continuing to work in Montréal, too… mostly session work and creative/grant projects, as well as some gigging and some teaching at Concordia. Definitely miss getting to hang with all of you as much, but I’ll reach out about meeting-up when I get some downtime in Mtl. Great idea about having folks come to you for both work and hangs! Gonna checkout those videos.

The not getting any answers that you can act on after loads of medical tests is the worst part. I went through something a few years ago that required tons of mris, x-rays, scans, ultrasounds, and even a lumbar spinal tap and they never found anything other than a very high blood pressure. I saw a half dozen specialists at multiple hospitals and no one could figure anything out.
The answer finally came from my ophthalmologist, surprisingly, when a scan of the inner eyes showed swelling around my optic nerve. It's mostly all treated now but it still cost waay too much money and time.
The likely theory is that it was caused by the position I hold my head when using a computer at work.
Not being able to know for sure the cause and make changes is aggravating.
Anyways, take care care of yourself and know we are all supportative.

Oh man this are tough news. I wish you all the best and I hope you will find a good way of dealing with it. Also mentally. I can refer to that winter depression thing a lot. I started doing light therapy in the morning and it definitely helps. I ordered a special light with 10 000 lux and use it in the morning for half an hour and do meditations while using it. It helps for a better start in the morning. I would say I feel 5-10% better after using it. Maybe light therapy could help your mental health as well. 🌞

Thanks for sharing this. I think we are about the same age and as I also have some pretty crippling health issues that I’ve been fighting for years, can relate to some extent. Part of my struggle is related to anxiety and depression. My most important stress reliever is physical exercise. I like powerlifting personally, but imagine any tough exercise will have similar effects. Also have good experience with cold exposure and breathing exercises (à la Wim Hof). Better check that cold shock won’t trigger a seizure though. If it’s safe for you I think it would be good. Build up tolerance over time so you don’t get badly stressed at the prospect of a cold shower or plunge. Best wishes

I hope things rebalance for you quickly Liam. I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2007, but I only have seizures in my sleep so I'm completely unaware of the experience. I had seven years of chaos at the beginning. I've broken bones and bitten my lip off. I've woken up being resuscitated in hospital and had ambulance crews in the bedroom. For the last decade I've been seizure free (controlled) and the thing that terrifies me more than anything in life is having a breakthrough seizure like you've been experiencing. Thanks for sharing your experiences. This will help a lot of people understand this condition more. You mention November and possible lack of daylight as a trigger - do you think there could be a relationship with Vitamin D/K2? I'm no medic just someone who takes it through the winter. Thanks for the advice on Gingko Biloba as well, I was not aware of that risk. Here's to putting the spectre back in the jar.

Thank you Liam for sharing your journey in such a transparent way .. as you have come to learn you are not alone .. with a network that loves and supports you ...
There is nothing to hide or be ashamed of .. as we all have our challenges in this life ..
In being so open you have created a safe haven for others .. as they have been infused with the courage to come out of the shadows and speak openly about their situation...
Your articulation as well as your connection with your feelings resonates .. as awareness is the impetus to making change ..
You are an inspiration Liam ... allowing others to take your lead .. as they too come into the light with the strength and confidence to speak their truth alongside of you ..
    You are... " A man for others " ..
