    I don’t think that the hostility you are describing is down to folks reacting to what they perceive as ‘shill’ behaviour, but rather simply down to annoyance at what is perceived as constant self-promotion from folks who aren’t otherwise genuinely contributing or engaging with those communities in good faith. If we are being honest, the primary purpose of the vast majority of content creators posting to subreddits and other platforms like this are to drive traffic to their channels. Perhaps the question that folks should be reflecting on is how we can more effectively and authentically be part of the landscape, without solely being on broadcast the entire time (or at least, having the perception of such). Such malevolence is also definitely *not* something that is purely limited to /r/synthesizers - it is common across almost every topic-based forum out there, and basic Internet etiquette.

      @@LiamKillen I did watch the video, and while you touched upon understanding people being fed up of what they perceive as 'shill' behaviour, you didn't really address the specific point I am making. People aren't interested in shallow contributions from people who they perceive as purely interested in self promotion - something that the entire thrust of your video calling the whole thing 'toxic' seems to miss. To be honest I had hoped for something of a more considered reply here, but I guess this interaction just goes to illustrate the point.

      Well said. There are UA-camrs that are good musicians, good sound designers, good teachers, good reviewers, share good tips and ideas, have mastered a given skill or piece of gear, put a ton on time and effort into a video or just have an entertaining personality. But then there are UA-camrs that bring nothing much to the table, just click bait titles for videos with the most memorable part being the amount of self and sponsor promotion. Not surprising they get the hate, envy and all the negativity. Quite surprising that these channels are growing. I believe if UA-cam didn't remove the dislike button, channels like this one would have a much harder time surviving.

      Obviously there's going to be an element of self/channel promotion. That's kinda the point. People might just want to play music and have feedback while others are driven by a desire to educate and inspire and others still, just want to build a channel and make money. You've got to figure out the difference between those. My personal experience as a recent subscriber to this channel is that he's trying to show practical uses for pieces of gear used in different configurations. I have been trying to figure out a dawless setup for a while now and it's been very difficult when all the main 'reviewers' review every bit of new gear, make completely different music with it ever single time and pair it with different gear/ fx pedals EVERY SINGLE TIME. Like, 'here's the latest $$$ Moog synth, this is what it sounds like and here are all it's features and here's how it sounds with a Korg Volca beats and a Strymon night sky'
      What!? There never any consistency to those videos. So yeah, when I see a jam clip from this channel - it's similar gear, similar configuration and it promotes a similar theme. A theme that's discussed on this channel. That's the point (or at least some of it) of posting a clip. 'Come back to the channel where we discuss this kinda stuff.'
      What's wrong with that exactly?

    • @sebastienbarre
      @sebastienbarre 2 місяці тому +9

      @@LiamKillen The self-promotion is a bit triggering for sure. There are probably ways to be a bit more subtle about it, maybe *end* with promoting your Discord, as opposed to start *and* end with it, but that's just me. I haven't visited yours, but my experience with synth UA-camrs' Discord is that it is the opposite of Reddit, but unfortunately not in the best of ways -- a lot of mob-mentality going on, people trashing anybody who disagrees with their favorite UA-camr's take, etc. I stopped by Benn Jordan's discord for a bit, and it was as frustrating as some of Reddit's dark corners. My personal gold standard is Loopop, mostly because I get the feeling he cares about giving the gear a good shot without hiding the defects, and he is not on camera.

    Ah Reddit. One of the only places where you can get praised and simultaneously pooped on for participating in a place made for it. Unfortunately there is a stigma in many of the hobby subreddits against UA-camrs and influencers. I understand it to a degree, a lot of content out there is super shallow or just shilling products. There’s also a strong anti consumption/consumerism backlash following everything that happened since 2020 when there was a huge upsurge in hobbies and thus purchasing stuff. Obviously this clashes with influencers who rely on consumerism for material to a degree. It’s a whole mess of psychological factors.

      Many times it's jealousy. Especially if a person can afford gear they can't. Even worse, if a person can afford gear and they're deemed "unworthy" because of lack of skill or experience. I fall victim to it myself sometimes thinking "must be nice being able to buy all that stuff, bet I could do more with it." But it never leaves my brain. Everyone has their own situations. Mate, I think you're completely missing the forest for the trees. Reddit (as a whole) had a literal content rule that defined what accounts were to be categorized as spam - where for every one post about your own content, you should aim to make 10 or so comments or contributions that aren't self promotion (replies on your own stuff are still self promo). I think it was even part of the user onboarding back in the day - no idea if it's still a thing officially.
    You clearly know how to develop a recognizable brand identity - usernames, avatars, thumbnails, lighting, color grade, whatever. I bet many people can recognize your content as being yours at a glance and also realize that they've never seen your very recognizable branding comment or contribute to anything beyond your own posts.
    So, instead of meaningful feedback and discussion on content that should fit the bill, you get attention from only the crabbiest of folks and those who (kind of rightly) call out the misuse of the platform as advertising space. Whether promoting yourself as a "creator" people can monetarily support or a physical product people can buy doesn't really make a difference.

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  2 місяці тому +2

      Ok I understand.
      I don’t think that’s still a thing anymore. So I’m assuming the crabby people you’re describing are the “old school redditors” ?
      I def don’t make 10 comments for every one of my posts but I’d also like to think that my content has brought value and educational discussion overall to the synth Reddit community- I can see it through comments on my videos.
      Lots of people do respond well which is why I keep posting. that’s come with an absolute crap load of very rude comments though.

    • @thismeanswarbasse
      @thismeanswarbasse 2 місяці тому +11

      @@LiamKillen all I’m saying is that if you want better responses to your content on a community-organized platform, then participate as a member of the community too. You have more knowledge and value to provide than just your videos. There are dozens of questions about gear, setups, advice, etc every day on there that I bet you could provide really useful answers to and help others without expecting a video view or patron-lead in return.
      There are plenty of recognizable names in the space that get positive feedback on their literal openly paid demo videos because they also show up in the comments of other people’s posts and help foster the space for the sake of it. You’re just admittedly cross posting polished assets and expecting it to always be seen as a meaningful contribution.

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  2 місяці тому +3

      @@thismeanswarbasse Yeah for sure, but the responses that people give in that subreddit are so salty on the regular that it doesn't make me want to spend too much time / energy there. I think that the comments section of this video confirms that it's a toxic place in general, no matter who's posting there.
      On top of this, I think that continuously contributing directly related, informative videos aimed at inspring people is valuable enough in itself and I can see that in the response that I get to these videos - people do appreciate it.
      But again, this doesn't come without consistent rude comments from the "OG Redditors", I guess you'd call them - in that subreddit.

    I'm going to be a bit blunt, but my intention is not to be insulting, but at least give reason for at least some of the negativity.
    Outside toxic people you pointed out (criticising someone's musical ability and such is always dumb), there are a lot of people who are justifiably starting to get fatigued from synthfluencers and how they and the music gear industry work together to encourage the worst aspects of consumption communities, were you're encouraged or in some cases, borderline coerced to buy the Shiny New Thing™ to be part of said community.
    Eventually I pretty much zoned out of the entire community and watching said synthfluencers like yourself for this reason. "Tame" or no real reviews, lacking review guidelines to begin with, not mentioning major bugs (unless its convenient) and even in some cases, defending or just being generally shitty people. At the end of the day, its all about marketing the Shiny New Thing above all else, to the benefit of said companies. Just comes off as rather cynical as a whole.
    And lets be clear, it's not unique to this community, I see it too much in other hobbies to various degrees. Anything revolving photography/videography is particularly bad too with this.
    I say this despite having a decent amount of gear. Does it make me a hypocrite? Yes. Does it make what I say any less true? No.

    r/synthesizers doesn't know what it wants. Post gear pics, people complain, Post DAWless jams, people complain. Use the word "DAWless" people complain. Post music, people don't engage, like, or listen.... or complain. Post questions, people complain. Ask about hardware synth recommendations, people reprimand you for not saving money and buying plugins. All of these things are related to synthesizers, but everyone only wants it to be the specific thing that they're into, and everything else is trash/not worthy of the sub to them. So instead of just leaving it, they downvote it, or trash talk it. Add r/synthesizercirclejerk into the mix and now posts are targets for being mocked and made fun of (surprised you didn't mention those guys in your vid). In the end, r/synthesizers is not a very encouraging place to post. I used to share my music on there, but got discouraged when nobody seemed to care. I still try and answer some of the "newb" questions people post, no matter how dumb people think they are, because we've all been there at some point. That may include some "tough love" about buying too much gear to start out with, or purchasing redundant gear. But I'm not mean about it, like other people are. I'll take UA-cam, Instagram, and even Facebook synth groups for posting and engagement over reddit any day.

      Apologies...this comment ended up eing waaay too long.
      Few weeks ago, I asked on reddit what should I pick for my first hardware synth. I pointed out that I already have good midi keyboard from Arturia etc.
      First several comments were all about not buying hardware and investing in plugins. I was advised to buy Arturias synth pack (goes for about 500usd).
      I think some of the points were valid. Arturia delivers in its plugin package better value for money compared to any hardware synth at that price range and then some.
      But there was one guy who said: OP is not asking for plugin advice, he is asking for hardware. He recommended Behringer pro800. Which I bought. I am so hooked on this I have been twisting knobs every day whenever I have time😂.
      Already planning to buy Novation peak. If it wasn't for that one guy...I would have bought soft synth and give up after few days simply because interacting with it on the pc screen sucks ssoooooo hard for me.
      Negativity against youtubers...I think people are catching up with the fact that a lot of youtubers are just shills pushing product. They make themselves look like your next door dude who is trying to help.
      Hell, I learned it the hard way couple of times. Obviously honest youtubers will suffer in the process. It is up to them to show their worth and honesty to the communities they want to represent.
      Finally:
      In the video author says that in his discord people are niceer than on reddit. Sure they are. They are his subscribers...and if someone trolling or heavily criticizing...they will get booted from the channel.😅

    What I learned so far through my journey is that real musicians are always open minded, helpful and very happily vibing around with everyone who shares their passion about music.
    But today in 2024 a lot of people going through a lot of labeling, they need to categorize everything and let themselves categorize by others too on some point just to fit in a group of others, maybe to not be alone? I don't know. But what I know is with all these labeling it starts to get controversial and people gets rather divided instead of growing together.
    When I started to dive into the world of music somehow all my labels in my head disappeared over time and I just see Humans as they are no matter what genre or culture.
    I just have 2 labels in my head now - it's good and evil.
    And all the musicians out there I follow so far like Liam too are the pure good and that's what have kept me going over the last years when I started to create my music. We all understand that people need to make money, and this is absolutely one of the ways to get there, but it seems like youtube has turned into the ad channel on TV back in the day but instead of selling knives, kitchen cloths or contraptions to workout, you try to sell synths. I don't blame anyone for making a video about gear, I usually like them if they're not just blatant ads and explain at least a little bit what the synth/pedal actually does, but there needs to also be something else, otherwise you just turn into the guy from '90s commercials.

    It seems to invite the worst characteristics of the human psyche and then people jump into mob mentality when they see downvotes piling up.
    Your discord is definitely more fun and lighthearted. Haha. Keep at it man you make good music, not just content.

    r/synthesizers is a weird place, everyone's there ostensibly for the common love of synthesizers but people there are so negative, and laser focus in on all the 'negatives' of every piece of gear, and if you don't have the 'right gear' you can't hang.
    But if you'd just posted a still image of a vintage synth you'd have gotten heaps of upvotes and rounds of applause....
    This dude has a good video on so called "Consumption communities" definitely applies to a lot of music subreddits - r/synthesizers, r/guitar, r/guitarpedals etc. - ua-cam.com/video/44lw5lQHVy0/v-deo.htmlsi=B6UqHiTiiB4llI3q

      @@LiamKillenI can still access the post on Reddit , I read it and that’s why I said it wasn’t that bad overall minus a couple trolls. Certainly not worth making a video over. You got 106 upvotes, 53 comments which is more than most people, and you got replies. I counted like 3 stupid comments saying it was garbage or why are you moving your hands so much, and one accusing you of getting paid or something dumb. Most comments were people engaging with their opinions of the product itself. This is standard r/synthesizers except you got a bunch of comments and tons of up votes compared to us plebs.

    Its the broad scope of “synthesizers”. As a youtuber you get the whole spectrum of people who have some interest in synths. But, as Ive come to find myself, its too broad to be helpful. I still go and look and chat out of boredom but I expect very little from such a broad group of people. Yes, we all like synths but its like “electronic music”. I love electronic music but I also really hate electronic music. Some genres are total vibe kill… for me. “Synthesizers” is just like that, you have the people who think a synth is all about keys and chords and polyphony, electronic pianos… Then you have the hip hop types who mainly just like samplers and drum machines. You have the generative ambient folks in eurorack. Hell, eurorack, it can do all the things and also can do a lot of nothing. Some people just like the concept more than the music. None of this is wrong but these people in the same room doesnt equal a party everyone is going to enjoy. What do you play? Is it a band? Church organ music? Detroit Techno? Drum and Bass? Hip-hop? Will there be vocals? Happy fuckin hardcore!? Drone music…. Almost no one actually likes all of it. Yet under the same roof you have them all joined under the related point of equipment. Its actually a pretty generic relationship point, with some conflicting mindsets on what is the best outcome of using said gear.

    To my impression, Reddit is quite an anti-capitalistic and anti-authoritarian place in the internet, so I totally get that people over there are kind of allergic to the kind of posts you mentioned as an example. Furthermore, people on Reddit tend to be somehow sarcastic and subversive in general as an expression of their humor, but that doesn't mean that their reaction / 'toxicity' comes out of the blue, or doesn't have a valid point... Let me just analyse the title of your video example:
    Mentioning 'Chroma Console' but not the Elektron device you use, raises the suspicion that you are actually advertising that specific gear and that you gain money for that. 'How [it] makes YOUR drums sound' raises the suspicion that you're not there to get advice, or help, or feedback, but rather you want to teach people something, or at least just demonstrate what you do, instead of being interested in an open conversation about it ('What do you think about Chroma Console?', or 'Elektron Chroma Jam' or whatever would be a much more open and somehow engaging title). Apart from that, the comment about not hearing the dry vs. wet signal comes from a valid point... If your video is indeed mainly demonstrating the Chroma console, it is fair enough wanting to truly understand what it is doing vs which effects come from the Elektron device / the samples themselves.
    Furthermore, which also applies to the other 'gear I sold' video, I wonder whether the videos are kind of off-topic, since most gear you mention is not really a sythesizer but a sampler / groovebox / effects pedal.
    Last not least, comparing the feedback to other platforms like UA-cam, Insta, Discord doesn't really make sense, since on all of those platforms people came and subscribed to your channel willingly and thus like your style of communicating and sometimes advertising / featuring paid gear, as opposed to a subreddit where people are not subscribed because of you yourself, but because of the synthesizer topic...
    Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy subscriber of your channel and like what you do, I just understand as well the other side of the coin and thus think that it is not appropriate the simply frame the feedback as 'toxic af' etc.

    Because I’m not a content creator anymore, I rarely post comments on the internet unless I know there gonna go under the radar. I find it all kinda pointless to me, but once in a while I have something to say when it comes to creative endeavors. So when that happens, the last thing I wanna see is buster a%* wanksters drinking that Hater-Aid lol
    Such pathetic behavior is a waste of carbon. With that said, Im glad I don't like Reddit. it's not because of the haters, I just don't like how the app/website works. Unlike the simpler format of Gear Sluts….
    which seemed to be more about gear snobbery then hating. It was comical to read what people used to say about Behringer before they started making synths. I used to and still use there mixers. Idk, seems like toxic discussions are worse on places like Reddit.
    All I know is I respect other people opinions regardless if they don’t run parallel with my own. Like selling a Digitone 😉
