These bikes look great, but I think I'll stick with the XR250R! Doing an engine rebuild, even once a year, is just too costly. The old XR engines go for years and then only need a piston and rings, which is not very expensive.
Superb review by the way! All your reviews are excellent.

I feel bad that I rode my old 150RB for years without doing a single thing lol. I even rode it without oil for an entire day by accident. I've always felt that the 250x was tame even with all the mods...which is why I really liked it. I don't need ridiculous. Not anymore.

50 hours since review with two desert races on it. Cam chain tensioner failed. Top end tear down revealed one side of the piston skirt was rounding off from wear. Very dangerous. Piston ring was still in spec. Everything else is good.

Great review. Just the info I was looking for on the crf250x, as I was thinking of replacing my old dr350 that I've been riding for the last 17 years with one. My wife would kill me putting that much into maintenance and doesn't sound like it would suit the slow technical riding I do in Colorado. I guess it's time to add a 2 stroke to the garage if I'm going to be rebuilding a bike every winter.

Hello, I'm George and a 250X owner. My first Honda and first experience with SOHC. I just finished the valve job converting to steel so hopefully lasts longer than 20 hours. Previous owner didn't understand the importance of a clean air filter that is correctly sealed. I have grown to really like it I can feel the bike is really close to what I'm looking for on power but something you mentioned might help get it. I rebuilt the carb last year trying to fix my rough idle and hard starting problem. (LOL little did I know that soon came a valve job) Well during re-assembly I went with the stock position on the clip because no other mods have been made? I also stuck with stock jet. I also know exactly what I'm doing tomorrow!
    Great Video!

I have to disagree about reliability. 2004-2006 bikes had reliability problems. Honda made cam and valve changes. After 2007 the bikes became very reliable with routine maintenance, presuming you haven't bought one ragged out when you got it. Change the oil a LOT and keep your air filter clean. Stay out of the rev limiter. No problems. I think you do the bike a disservice in your evaluation, though I understand you are recounting your own experiences. I have ridden a 2007 for 3 years with no issues at all. It has shined on Rocky Mountain trails, held its own on a MX track, and struggled on eastern US twisty trails. I think it's a great bike overall, and an absolutely excellent western US trail bike.

You know your onions, have a real sense of humor, and know how to make a superb video, congrats! I have a 2017 set up for enduro (I am that once a month rider, putting through single track, standing on the pegs...and yes I change the engine oil, trans oil, and clean the air filter every other ride ....its what old guys do when they retire, you'll get there one day) and don't have a fraction of your mechanical know how; but would chop open my airbox and uncork the exhaust in a heartbeat if it made a real difference; What do you think? I bought a yz 125 and I love it. But I’m finding myself wishing I bought a crf 250 having grown up riding Hondas. I just do trail riding and heavy off-roading and it’s all I need. The yz gives you a complete rush when the powerband kicks in but I miss the even power delivery of a 4stroke. Not to mention I can get a California green sticker for it and ride year round.

    1. It’s a Honda
    2. Yep still a Honda
    3. I’ve had XR650R, the CRF450X and now the CRF250X and next to the CRF230F it’s the funnest bike I’ve ridden. It’s for a lot of power and it’s super light and nimble which means my old ass can hold on longer.

I’m looking to upgrade from my first bike (A CRF 150r small wheel) because it’s just too small. I’m 6’0 at 150 lbs which is 30 lbs over the weight limit and I can barely even fit on it. Would you recommend this for an intermediate rider/ second bike? Or is there a better Honda I should shoot for? I have my own trails which are pretty bumpy and windy so I’ll definitely need something cushy in suspension but not too powerful. Thanks a lot for reading 🤙

I have an opportunity to buy a 2005 crf250x for $1500. It looks a little beat up but I'm mostly worried that I'm too big for this bike. I'm 6'3 275lbs. What are your thoughts? What other bike should I like for? I will make any bike I buy street legal and mostly ride on dirt roads with some light off-roading

Which other bikes are better to have in terms of maintenance costs? I looking to get one CRF 250 R or X from 2006 to 2011. I currently own a CRF230F 2008, but I want something more powerfull and better equiped (suspensions)... (I will not sell my CRF230F)

This was so awesome bro. I really hadn't seen you ride an R style bike on your trails yet, but dude...holy shit you are so god damn fast. There's no way in hell that I could keep up with you if we rode together again. Jfc you did so much sketchy shit hahaha. Also, amazing review. That was so damn perfect. I can't wait to see the day that you have at least 50k subscribers. Anyways, dope video :) Lets ride sometime when you come back home.

I'd love to see a comparison of the CRF250X and your modified CRF230F. I am in the process of deciding whether to upgrade my 230 or sell it and move to a 250X. I already have a fox shock and a fork rebuild, I might add a piston and a cam. I love the low seat height and tractor like torque but would like a little more suspension travel and a few more ponies.

I own a 2007 250x and 2009 230F. Both have been rock solid reliable. 230F has reworked suspension and carb work. Different bikes for different uses. I ride all over the country. Tight, twisty eastern trails = the 230F w/o question. Rocky Mountains and high desert = 250x. Plush suspension and lots of power. May be the perfect mountain bike. I also own a KDX220 and find it a great compromise between the two. I am 5'11" and 185 lbs. If you are taller than 6' go with the 250x. If you are under 5'7" go with the 230F. If you have $5k to spend and want a "perfect" bike let Jeff Fredette build you a KDX220. Love all three bikes but the Fredette KDX is beyond compare and the sweetest bike I have owned (I'm 67 with 52 years in the saddle). Lots of seat time on all but Overall the KDX is superb. Better than $9k KTM's by far. Just my opinion fellas.

Great review! I have a 2013 that I bought 3 years ago. The trails I ride are anywhere from sandy washes to rocks on rocks and steep. The low gearing works well for the extremely rocky areas. How is your bike doing since your last update?

Very very good review! I'm looking to buy one of these. They are very rare where I am. And I own a Cbr600rr. I wanted to stay in the Honda family and focus on Trail riding. Sounds like, despite most hondas, this is not a reliable machine. I want reliability. Any suggestions on another 250 trails oriented 4 stroke? Thanks so much!
