MELTING (*100 OUNCES*) OF STERLING SILVER INTO 10oz BARS

- This week we do our second smelt on the channel. This time it isn't gold though. This time we have over five pounds of sterling silver to melt in to bars. Join us on our journey to continue to melt precious metals from buys in the pawn shop and become better with each pour.
Precious metal refiner here. The black on the surface of the ingots is oxidation from the copper in the sterling silver reacting with oxygen in the air. The only way to avoid this oxidation when base metals are involved is to melt the metal alloy in a vacuum furnace or as a cheaper but probably less effective alternative, with argon gas flowing over the molten alloy. Pure silver and gold are not affected by oxidation as they are highly unreactive metals known as noble metals.
Also, to pour a nice ingot, you need to heat the mold with an appropriate torch flame prior to and while pouring the ingot. A Bernzomatic TS8000 works wonders for this purpose. Propane works fine and is cheaper than MAP gas.
Keep in mind that even if you heat the mold with a torch, it will always be much cooler than the molten silver or gold itself causing the molten metal to want to freeze on contact with the mold. For this reason, it's important to have an appropriately sized mold for the amount of metal being poured. What prevents this premature freezing on contact with the mold is the size of the molten mass behind the metal that's touching the mold upon pouring and how quickly the mold can be filled. If your mold is too big for the amount of molten metal being poured, it will cool too quickly and you will not get a nice ingot. Ideally you want a mold that matches as closely as possible to the amount of molten metal being poured. The mold in your video looks appropriate, however.
Hope this helps!
You will have better results melting Sterling by heating the graphite mold with "Map" gas and keep it running while you pour. Graphite cools super quick so when you take it off the top of the furnace it is cooling way too fast. Hope this helps. Sterling is a little tougher to pour than pure silver because there is copper mixed in. Great job!
How can you take the copper out of sterling? I'm just wondering if it's a hard process.

I’m not sure about separating the metals but I imagine it’s hard. The only way I can think of is gravity. Silver is heavier than copper per cubic measurement. Cubic foot, inch, etc… silver would sink while copper would float similar to water an oil.. I imagine it’d have to separate that way. But I’d like to be educated further on the matter.
@@jayc8180 that's not how it works.
Love watching young men engaged and trying to figure things out...while makin money !! Good job
Justin & Mike, Thanks for sharing this process of melting scrap silver. The final bars looked nice. Donnie- W.V.
You and your dad make a great team. Enjoy watching you guys work and deal.
Found this channel about 2wks ago and have been doing marathons of this channel. Love the channel. I’m sure everyone will have a comment for you on how to do it. 🤣
The sound of bars going into water never gets old
Why am I so amazed by this?!?! lol. Turning flatware into silver bars. They look awesome.
I love the melting videos and watching you learn what works best. I also laughed at “Mr. Tape” and the martini stirrer. Hilarious 😂
Every time I watch your channel I learn something .
I love all of your videos. I've been binge watching them today on my day off. I live in Ocala and I sell part time on ebay, so I love watching what you and your dad find at the garage sales. Thanks for all the great content. 😊
Thanks for sharing your silver melting experience! 🎉
3:08 Super interesting learning about precious metals picking.
You make me want to start going to yard sales. Hard up North in NH with the snow.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but you need to keep the flame on the mold , there’s nothing wrong with your torch , keep it upright to avoid liquid propane which will shut it off . One other thing , pick a spot and don’t move while pouring, good luck
I love the tape jobs on your shipping boxes! Very cool to watch you melt down the miscellaneous silver pieces to make those silver bars. They look good to me and they say practice makes perfect! Good job guys.
Cool video. Kinda like when T.O. planted the ball in the middle of the star!!! lol
Looking forward to learning with you!
I can tell you right now, melting and pouring is very addictive. Like I said before, I started doing it a little over a year ago and haven’t stopped. I’ve melted everything that can be melted with a small furnace or a map gas torch. I used a ceramic melt dish and map gas and made my wife a sterling ingot that looks just like the moon… I switched over to just map gas for heating the molds and some melting, but I would recommend getting the hose attachment for it, it just makes it easier for me. Like someone else mentioned, keep the torch on it as the silver ‘freezes’ and you should get a better surface. Once you get the hang of that, you can make it look like it has ripples in it. Great video. I’m in north Florida, north of Gainesville, otherwise I’d be willing to help out
That's so cool you doing these videos of the melt down. Doesn't matter what it looks like, it's still 10ozs of silver
Love the melting videos!
Keep pouring with all the tips it will get good !!!🇺🇸

That was class man. When I saw your last video melting gold with a furnace that was just over $200 I ordered one straight away. It arrived the other day , can't wait to start melting whatever I can get my hands on. Thanks for giving me the confidence to give it a go. You and your dad are absolute legends 👏
Wow that’s great. Thank you so much. Just be super careful and watch a bunch of videos like we did because that helps a lot and above all else have fun 👍
@@PawnBrokerPickers thanks for the advice. I've been doing just that, watching loads of videos. Just have to do it now.
Happy Christmas to you and your family sir, hope its a good one 👍
@@johnhenry3256 Merry Christmas!!!
Looks great really enjoy video's
I hope you continue to melt silver, and gold !!!
Love watching the process thanks for bringing us along ❤
Sweet Georgia Brown! pouring bars is next level. For sure have seen people lightly tap the mold as you pour to get a better looking top. Then heating that mold with a torch as you pour to help it cool a little more slowly. Can't wait to win that bar :)
Great video, my son and I enjoy watching the melting and pouring videos.
😊 I think you've done a wonderful job melting down silver good job
You're keeping tape companies in business.
Another tip I heard if you tap or bump the mold while pouring it makes cool ripples in it and also may fill those corners better, but either way cool video bro
100 percent agree that your mould needs to be a lot hotter.really enjoy watching your footage and very jealous seeing it lovely and warm as opposed to wet cold and windy in england😊
I think you're doing a great job at smelting and pouring silver and gold.
Smelting is the process of extracting metal from its ores with heat and oxidizing or reducing agents.
This is just melting.
Starting to become one of my favorite shows on UA-cam
Great channel outstanding work. 👍👍
Hi Justin you are probably the best around here, Good luck 👍Thank you for another great video
You are killing it for your 2 time doing it keep melting the more you melt the better you will get I love your channel keep up all the great videos
So cool. I’d love to do that. I like that you’re just getting started. Makes it much more interesting to watch than an expert sometimes.
It seems like silver melts fast. I could watch this all day!

The silver bar making looks super cool!
Wish y’all the best. Thanks for the great content.
Maybe trying tapping the mold right after the pour to distribute the metal around it. Not sure, never tried to do it but I want to! If I win the bar I will keep it safe!
Your Give aways are very generious!! Thanks.
Get yourself a map gas torch setup and keep it on the mold heating it while the melt is going on. Keep the flame on the melt in the mold as you pour. And get some insulation between the mold and the brick. 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm glad you made another video on melting and packing you plenty of tape priceless
Great job guys!
Thank you.. these videos help me alot brotha.. keep em coming!!!
Thanks for showing us how to make silver bars. Interesting process.

Sweet video love watching the melt
Always a pleasure seeing a new video!
Maybe one day you can start making silver bars with your Logo on them for your give always! That would be cool! Loved the video!
More borax and then map gas (yellow can) on the top of bar while you are pouring. It's cooling to fast and the heat on top also helps release the gas bubbles on the bottom too
Enjoyed watching the process. Awesome session 😊
Great video, getting better with every melt.
