  • Refining Sterling Silver into Pure Silver Shot #refining #metal
    In this video I show how to refine sterling silver into 99% pure silver shot. I use the cementation process to remove the majority of the base metals from sterling silver flatware. Then I pour it into silver shot using our homemade #lavaslide. Watch the next part of this refining video • Experimental Silver Cell where I further refine the silver shot using electrolysis, in a silver cell, to reach the highest purity 999 fine silver.

    Hello Thomas, I am getting to do the same with some old european silver (500, 700, 800, 812, 833, 875, 900, 925, 950 - many historical standards) and get some pure silver for other projects...
    What nice place and equipment you have...

      Hello from the US. Your kind words are much appreciated. I have a video coming up using my electrolytic silver cell for purification. Do you currently use electrolysis to purify your silver? May all your days be blessed!

      @@monadnockgems I have everything needed for electrolysis (DC, AgNO3...), but the material to be electrolysed... 😀
      I did not built the cell yet. I watch Sreetips and Jeff form Lithic Metals, but I will need something smaller, as I do not plan to clean kilos and kilos...
      Looking forward for your silver cell video...

      Thank you! Before I started refining I spent over a year just collecting and buying metals to refine, reading and learning. If your internal voice is telling you to try this, listen to it and pray. God will show you the way.

    Love your videos man! Will you please make a video about your silver lava tube? I really want to build something similar for my small operation. I’m excited to see your silver cell setup, I have my own working as we speak but I would love to learn some new ways to improve it! Thanks for making these and I look forward to seeing more.

    Inspired by Sreetips perhaps?

    • @monadnockgems
      @monadnockgems  Рік тому +5

      Sreetips is great and has been a great resource for me, although my inspiration comes from a higher power! I hope you continue watching as my ultimate goal for this channel is to move beyond silver and gold refining and into refining more complex metals such as zirconium and titanium using the kroll process, as these are the abundant metals that we have at our mining location in Wisconsin. I felt the need to start my videos in the area of silver and gold as it is more familiar to me at this point. Thanks for the reply!

    Could you use Urea Nitrogen to neutralize any remaining HNO3? I use this method when I have dissolved Gold in Aqua Regia, from scrap electronics. Tom Buffalo, NY

    • @monadnockgems
      @monadnockgems  Рік тому +2

      I haven't tried this method but I believe it would work, although the addition of urea to free nitric acid would form urea nitrate and in certain conditions can be highly explosive and I tend to stay away from those types of reactions. Good question! Thanks for watching!

      I suggest watching Sreetips on UA-cam as a good start. Then be sure to buy a copy of the Refining precious metal waste by C.M Hoke. It is an old school lesson on refining and is very useful. Most important, start gathering supplies. It takes time and money so just get started!

    • @monadnockgems

      I used sterling silver which is 92.5% silver. Silver plated is roughly 5% silver over other metals. There are a few different techniques to remove silver from plated pieces. I would not use this technique for silver plated items. I will probably make a video on refining silver plated items.

  • @Padres-sv1lr

    If it was sterling silver then what was the metal that was the huge chunk of the fork that was left? You’d think it wouldn’t be that big if 92.5% of the object would dissolve into the blue juice

      The handle is made of sterling silver but the top part is usually finely buffed nickel silver or brass, plated with a thin layer of silver

    • @monadnockgems
      @monadnockgems  3 місяці тому

      I didn't lose as much as what was shown in the video. All of the silver showed up in the rinse water. If I would have filtered instead of decanted I would have gotten a better yield.

    Weight of your sterling silver is 368gm.
    Purity is 92.5%, according to this 340gm pure silver present in 368gm 92.5% sample.
    But at the end you got 307gm pure silver, so you loss 33gm silver!!! Am I right?

    What happens with dirty or heavily tarnished sterling

    • @monadnockgems
      @monadnockgems  5 місяців тому +1

      I usually clean off silverplate in dishwasher first and most residue is seperated out in the melt with borax. Any remaining dirt will get filtered out later during refining.
