Found your channel a few days ago and man you’re energy is just so enthralling, you’re so much fun to watch even if I know nothing about music and the like. You’ve earned the sub bro!
My first mp3 player actually had a dock that connected to the PC via parallel port. It had 32 megs of volatile memory that wiped if the batteries died.
Probably the Rio PMP300! I saved my paper route money to be the first kid I knew with an MP3 player. Yep, it connected through the parallel port and you could expand storage with SmartMedia cards (pre-SD/MMC).
Talking about people not understanding MP3s back in 1999 takes me back to many confused conversations with my dad. He called SD cards and those ultra small optical discs MP3s because he just couldn't wrap his head around a piece of music without a physical medium to exist on. When the card in my cheapo nugget bit the dust and I had to use the gossamer thin internal storage, it blew his mind that it could work without a disc in it. And yeah, it used normal SD because Micro was either nonexistent or extremely high end at the time.
8:23 - In 1999, this was the only "Peripheral"/sub type connector that even existed. The Mini connectors (Type A and B) came in April the year after, and mini wouldn't be about for the best part of a decade. And it's an absolute nug.
Almost identical to my first mp3. I remember it held like 7 songs. Every Friday I'd have to pick out the cd I wanted to put on it and let it load up over night. We'll the part I could fit. Then those were my songs for the weekend.
These guys or their brand , exists to this day and they are JAM Audio , and owned by HMDX. I got as gift their "top tier" JAM Zero Chill BT speaker (the most expensive one according to their catalog) , and they sell TWS earbuds and headphones and speakers aswell turntable (one model). Jam logo is somewhat similar to this one , so I assume they're the same brand / company. The speaker I have mimics one of those JBL water resistant speakers in some aspects and has some feats of it.
My first MP3 player had an actual hard drive inside. Whenever it changed tracks I had to freeze mid-stride until the disc stopped spinning, or else my battery would drain almost immediately.
"Can't wait to toggle those sliders" I don't know why, but that was so damn funny to me, i choked on my vape and had to pause the video. I had a image in my head of you fiddling with a nugget while breathing heavily.
The main argument against mp3 in 1999 was minidisc vs CD-R. You had enough space on a minidisc to record a full cd at near cd quality and could also use higher compression if desired. Napster had not yet taken off, so your music sources were your friends cds, your family's cds and the library. Mp3 players were good for joggers and gym people because they didn't skip but you took a significant hit on audio quality. At 128kbs you music was significantly quieter with over ear headphones. Of course would be using earbuds in the gym. Even the 1st ipod had significant detractions in that you needed to use itunes and had to learn how to get homemade mp3s on it. Cheap no name mp3 players were common because the primary devices were minidiscs for the spenders and burned cds for the general pop. Mp3 players didn't have enough memory until after the ipod.

This was my first nugget in 2001. I was a broke college student and couldn't afford an ipod. This came free with a video card I needed for school. It was really fun jogging to the same four tracks on a loop.
Not bad for activities that last less than hour and you can return to computer afterwards to swap tunes. But if you were to bring that thing on a trip, phew... That's some tortured entertainment.
@@JimpanZ78 That is absolutely brutal. My Walkman from 1997 got up to 30 hours of use on a single AA alkaline (roughly 20 hours of playtime for tapes alone). Also got similar times from my later MD Walkman, also on a single AA. Early MP3 players were something else. Crazy how far they went.
