You've done this one and the the RP80 but I still want to see the XL. Varusteleka is a very great company and also maybe you can try some of their Sarma TST Merino wool and other layering garments.
In finnish military, people are evacuated from the grab handle, thats why it's so big and strong, it's capable of carrying both you and the bag. Also, usually with savotta bags, you can turn one of it's pockets inside out, and compress the whole bag inside the pocket, for easy carry.
Great video again Luke. The big strap is so huge for one reason too: You must be able to grab it with a thick glove in severe winter conditions, say -40 C. This pack is for multi-day trips, say 7 - 21 days carrying with you everything, including ammo. It is a top notch pack for professionals. One danger exists for regular users: It is so huge that one is tempted to fill it too heavily causing it to weigh far too much. A balance is needed while you pack it.
I love Savotta (and Sarma) backpacks. My warm weather pack is the MiniJaakari S (small), a 20 liter pack but it holds enough gear, food and water for a two to three day adventure. After 62 years I've learned to take only what is necessary for my safety and comfort. The only piece of gear I attach to the exterior is the Finnish sleeping mat with the "wings" and everything else is in the pack. My utility belt carries my full tang knife, a survival pouch and my firearm if I decide to take one. Savotta makes the finest gear in my humble opinion.
I don’t mind the weight of good bags that will last a long time. I’m not a thru-hiker and don’t care about minimalist or ultra light weight gear. I bring what I want because I am the one that’s going to carry it.

The store name what you english guys spell "where's the liquor" (tho great nickname), in finnish it means Varuste= gear/equipment and Leka=sledge hammer. So rough translation would be GearSledge or something like that Also the "Jääkäri" means Jaeger, or Hunter.

Hi ,thanks for sharing. Could you help? -i can see that the interior stiched seams arent reinforced in the same way as the ones on the lid interior. ( Same way as the lid, belt and shoulder straps are finished at their perimeter) On their website you can see the fabric on that seams,that hold the MOLLE/PAL webbing to the backpack fabric too, its gettting loose fibers, like the fabric falling apart...( No liner, uncovered inside sewing) Should we be concerned about this issue? i think, over time it will only getting worst. Only with normal use. -I can see that in some photos, the vertical stiching is at the outside , where it holds the MOLLE/ PAL webbing, but in others the stiching is at the inside, making it less fragile.Rocks and friction will break the exterior stiching.Where should we expect to find them if we buy one? Is the interior stiching an upgrade of new modells? -It looks like the snow will stick to the padding fabric. ( Belt, shoulder straps, and back padding). Is that correct? Thats not the best solution for winter. I hope i explained myself in a good way. Thanks in advance.

The reason for the big drag handle strap is you can hang several on one hook when transporting packs. I've noticed several new military backpacks using a simular design feature.
I am from Finland and I know what Varusteleka realy is in english. So Varuste is an equipment and leka is a sledgehammer So it is Equipmentsledgehammer in english. Just trust me.
I have one... I picked one up for $260 on eBay! With 2 XL sustainment bags! My USMC 3S sleeping bag, bivvy, and compression sack are in there... and, I have a Savotta FDF sleeping mat. Oh, after seeing that Glock, you have my respect!
One thing about the straps, they are made mostly too long purposely so if you don't need all that much just shorten them by heating your knife and cutting them to your length. Also reason why there is no strap holders is that they should withstand as much as the other components in that pack and as far as I know none of those strap holders can withstand as much so its just easier to leave them out. I use myself black electrical tape but rubber bands works good too. But nice review I really appreciate that you are not choosing blindly US made gear but also use quality stuff made elsewhere. How I see the military gear is that US made gear is way further optimized than our own (yes I am from Finland too) and that goes all the way from your military rifles back to backpacks etc.
The hardware on the pack is ITW Nexus and the zips are high grade military spec, same zip brand is used on British SF gaberdine smocks. Also the drag handle can easily be shoved under the floating lid flap problem solved.
The grab handle is so you can handle it with mittens on! America may not be so bad but in Finland it’s often -30^C fantastic review, I got the medium but I think I’ll give that to my Mrs and get the large for myself
Great review as always.. and what looks like an awesome pack... A bit too pricey for me though. I've seen a few in the bushcraft community using them and they do look the part... I can understand you regard it as a favourite. I was lucky and found a brand new un-issued, in it's plastic wrapper, "Dutch Army Lowe Alpine Sting" a few years back. The best part was I got it mail order from the UK and it cost me just £80.. a steal.. A while back you reviewed the smaller Strike pack..(you called the medium, it's actually the small pack) and the "Saracen" which is the large bergen. The Sting is the medium and is about 55L with the option to add two zipped on 10L side pouches that expand that capacity further... It has most of the features of the Savotta, except the floating lid and divider...(Although the earlier 'Stingray' was a variant that did have the divider...) Lowe Alpine military quality is excellent and even the inside seams are taped and have no threads.... It really is a great pack and a shame that they don't make it anymore.. When I found mine the guy was down to his last 5 packs and told me that was the end of it... Now you get a few beaten up used surplus packs, that are still great but a bit the worse for wear... They actually made an olive green version, but as it was not an issued item they are very rare... I love your site and look forward to your videos... cheers ..
The best tacticool backpack for me is from direct action.. dust, ghost and dragon egg were super comfortable, great ventilation.. I like how the back padded actually feels like they massage your back . Now.. I just need to wait if they make top loading backpack just like this one.
TIL Varusteleka sounds like WhereIsTheLiqour :D I just got my Jääkäri L couple days ago and holy hell its easy to carry. This newer version fits a slim guy like me really well and the build quality and design is so beautiful I dont have to worry about grabbing it fully packed from a wrong location. 320 dollars with side pockets sounded like a lot but its worth every penny.
This is my favorite backpack! I have two off the smaller ones in black, and I love it! I highly recommend this jaegar (Or Jääkäri in finnish) to everyone!
This one for sure as its more versatile and you can pack more if you need to. The smaller one is more like a daytrip kind and I use the Medium sized as everyday pack. Get both of them if you like and see wich one suits you best.
I love my savotta jaakari pack so much. It's built like a tank. I don't have to worry about it getting "hurt" or dirty in the field. It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. The only con I have is the location of the zipper on the hood. I wish the zipper was located on the back of the hood instead of the underside. Still better than any Kelty or Helikon pack I've ever owned.

The current favorite in the military is the Crossfire DG-16 made in Australia, The US military is updating the Mystery Ranch Mountain Ruck and the NICE frame. The UKSF likes the Jay Jay's Tactical Jungle Bergan that uses the 1606 ILBE frame. The US Army has the new 4000 molle.

The original Savotta Large side pouch molle fastening is 4 webbings wide, so you can store a knife o an axe behind the pouch/between the webbing. Smart huh? They are also releasing really big pouches this fall (2022).
Please do a review on some of Mountain Hardwear's backpacking packs. They make top notch gear and the packs are 100% waterproof with *outdry*. Would love to see your thoughts on it. No one has a review on youtube about their ozonic packs.
Great pack. I own both the M and the L. In a few weeks i'll be hiking (+camping) about 50% of Kungsleden trail in Sweden (from Kvikkjokk to Abisko) and i'll be taking one of these packs.

Should we be concerned about this issue? i think, over time it will only getting worst. Only with normal use. -I can see that in some modells the vertical stiching is at the outside , where it holds the PAL webbing, but in others the stiching is at the inside, making it less fragile.Rocks and friction will break the exterior stiching.Where should we expect to find them if we buy one? Is the interior stiching an upgrade of new modells? -It looks like the snow will stick to the padding fabric. ( Belt, shoulder straps, and back padding). Is that correct? Thats not the best solution for winter. -Are you happy on how the belt transfers the weight ? Could it work pulling a pulka /sled? I hope i explained myself in a good way. Thanks in advance.
It looks like a good pack for the money. There is one thing I've seen you carry with you for quite some time that I decide to give it a try. And that's those collapsible water bottles. I picked myself one up it's a platypus I'm going to give it a shot see what it does see if it works out pretty good. One thing about military stuff it's Bulletproof. Not saying bullets will stop a bullet it's just good stuff. Good review young man. You probably have or should do a review on those collapsible water bottles
witch do you think is the better pack in general between this one and the Varusteleka Särmä TST RP80 Recon Pack you did a review on back in October of 2017
One more suggestion to Savotta: make it jumpable and add a fast release buckle to each shoulder strap. They are simple add ons that can make a huge difference.
Hi, I would love your recommendation when it comes to Sarma RP80 and the Jaakari. Which one would you recommend for a full time heavy duty backpack. Im in a position to only buy one and I do not intend to buy another in the distant future.

I have the same pack, as you too, I did try to purchase the sarma but stock is always low due to high demand but I'm very happy with the pack and the build quality is excellent too. You should also check out packs by Crib Gogh and Warrior assault systems these brands are excellent and build quality is top notch.
the handle is that big actually due to the climate where this bag belongs to... colder areas... it’s that big so you still can easily grab it with mittens or gloves

Very costly for a pack that is as rugged as it gets, yet very comfortable and will definitely outlast any modern hightec lightweight backpack by decades? 🤔 Nope, I think the price is right.
I had the pack. I agree it has first rate quality. Nothing like it. However, on my first 6 mile hike, the pack with gear was 25 pounds. That was comfortable. My second hike of 6 miles was with 35 pounds. That was not comfortable. The majority of the weight was on my shoulders. I tried making strap adjustments. That didn’t work. I made internal weight adjustments. That didn’t work. I finished the hike but in pain at the shoulders. I consider myself in good shape. I was disappointed in myself. Sadly, I had to return the pack. If the problem was me, I don’t know what went wrong. If the problem was the pack, perhaps it was too small for my frame at 5’ 10” and 160 pounds. I wanted this pack to work. But, it is actually the 4th pack from a different company, I had to return due to various discomfort at heavier weight or poor fit. I may consider a retry. Thanks for the review.
Would love to know where you stand with this pack today, and how do you like it compared to the Xl. I have the Xl and love it, but been needing something smaller, I think this will work fine.
You could add a dump pouch on either side to act as a pocket for long items. If they updated this pack to include side pockets and an external zipper access on the lid it would be almost perfect. Although Savotta made great quality gear it's overpriced imo. For what they charge for this pack they could at least throw in the medium sized side pouches and a rain cover.

I use a USMC issue FILBE main ruck. It's about the same weight, has a huge max capacity, and cones with an external hydration system that can be worn alone and additional sustainment pouches. You can get a new one from Eagle for about the same price, or used/surplus for anywhere from $100 to $200
Belt says 90cm upwards. I'm 6'2" 190 pounds 31 inch waist. Some of the complaints were that waist belt was too long and could not be adjusted snugly enough to shift weight to hips. Large frame, narrow waisted people had issues. Any advice would be appreciated
for the grab handle you could use some shock cord to keep it out of the way vs velcro. For the sides, you could use some strapped pouches, similar to a gun butstock holder that is found on many hunting backpacks like badlands packs. It would not be in the way of the zipper and is removeable...
Pierre Larsion it's not from savotta. Särmä is varustelekas (where's the liquor) own brand that makes millitary style gear. They don't make it for the millitary but it's still a good manufacturer
However you are correct that Särmä is varustelekas own brand and not every product is made by Savotta. I Think the "high end" Särmä stuff seem to be produced by Savotta. I love the Särmä TST RP80 recon, and I use it as my multiday backpack, but I´m looking for something smaller and that is why I asked how it compares.
I would really love to get this pack, but the waistband is 10 inches too big. No way could I wear enough clothing in the summer to fit into that. I am disappointed they dont offer a smaller band.

It's like comparing apples and pumpkins. TST is basically the discontinued Savotta LJK Modular but with a rolltop and without the lid. Totally different size and carry system. Comparable to Jäkaari XL

Luke I hear you talk about kifaru but I can't find any reviews From you on one. I love the frames from kifaru, I have the military duplex frame and a bikini frame. I also run the reconning pack and woodsman packs on them frames. They are the toughest and most comfortable packs I have ever had the pleasure of wearing.
So in your best opinion: this jaakari pack or you would you go with an eberlestock Destroyer? Seem similar in size so I was hoping to get your opinion.
Tie a piece of para around the loop and tie that to the Molle on top ,that would work. If you have kydex sheaths ,para the loops on the holster to the side Molle and use the comp straps. That’s a bulletproof setup too I reckon that work man 🫡

It has most of the features of the Savotta, except the floating lid and divider...(Although the earlier 'Stingray' was a variant that did have the divider...)
Lowe Alpine military quality is excellent and even the inside seams are taped and have no threads....
It really is a great pack and a shame that they don't make it anymore.. When I found mine the guy was down to his last 5 packs and told me that was the end of it... Now you get a few beaten up used surplus packs, that are still great but a bit the worse for wear...
They actually made an olive green version, but as it was not an issued item they are very rare...

The best tacticool backpack for me is from direct action.. dust, ghost and dragon egg were super comfortable, great ventilation.. I like how the back padded actually feels like they massage your back . Now.. I just need to wait if they make top loading backpack just like this one.

I just got my Jääkäri L couple days ago and holy hell its easy to carry. This newer version fits a slim guy like me really well and the build quality and design is so beautiful I dont have to worry about grabbing it fully packed from a wrong location. 320 dollars with side pockets sounded like a lot but its worth every penny.

This is my favorite backpack! I have two off the smaller ones in black, and I love it! I highly recommend this jaegar (Or Jääkäri in finnish) to everyone!
Would you recommend this one or the smaller one? for packing clothes for a few days, axe, shovel , hammock and sleepingbag etc
This one for sure as its more versatile and you can pack more if you need to. The smaller one is more like a daytrip kind and I use the Medium sized as everyday pack. Get both of them if you like and see wich one suits you best.

I love my savotta jaakari pack so much. It's built like a tank. I don't have to worry about it getting "hurt" or dirty in the field. It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin.
I give it a 9.5 out of 10. The only con I have is the location of the zipper on the hood. I wish the zipper was located on the back of the hood instead of the underside.
Still better than any Kelty or Helikon pack I've ever owned.

The current favorite in the military is the Crossfire DG-16 made in Australia, The US military is updating the Mystery Ranch Mountain Ruck and the NICE frame. The UKSF likes the Jay Jay's Tactical Jungle Bergan that uses the 1606 ILBE frame. The US Army has the new 4000 molle.

The original Savotta Large side pouch molle fastening is 4 webbings wide, so you can store a knife o an axe behind the pouch/between the webbing. Smart huh?
They are also releasing really big pouches this fall (2022).

Please do a review on some of Mountain Hardwear's backpacking packs. They make top notch gear and the packs are 100% waterproof with *outdry*. Would love to see your thoughts on it. No one has a review on youtube about their ozonic packs.

Great pack. I own both the M and the L. In a few weeks i'll be hiking (+camping) about 50% of Kungsleden trail in Sweden (from Kvikkjokk to Abisko) and i'll be taking one of these packs.

-i can see that the interior stiched seams arent reinforced in the same way as the ones on the lid interior. ( Same way as the lid, belt and shoulder straps are finished at their perimeter)
On their website you can see the fabric on that seams,that hold the PAL webbing to the backpack fabric too, its gettting loose fibers, like the fabric falling apart...
Should we be concerned about this issue? i think, over time it will only getting worst. Only with normal use.
-I can see that in some modells the vertical stiching is at the outside , where it holds the PAL webbing, but in others the stiching is at the inside, making it less fragile.Rocks and friction will break the exterior stiching.Where should we expect to find them if we buy one?
Is the interior stiching an upgrade of new modells?
-It looks like the snow will stick to the padding fabric. ( Belt, shoulder straps, and back padding). Is that correct? Thats not the best solution for winter.
-Are you happy on how the belt transfers the weight ? Could it work pulling a pulka /sled?

It looks like a good pack for the money. There is one thing I've seen you carry with you for quite some time that I decide to give it a try. And that's those collapsible water bottles. I picked myself one up it's a platypus I'm going to give it a shot see what it does see if it works out pretty good. One thing about military stuff it's Bulletproof. Not saying bullets will stop a bullet it's just good stuff. Good review young man. You probably have or should do a review on those collapsible water bottles

witch do you think is the better pack in general between this one and the Varusteleka Särmä TST RP80 Recon Pack you did a review on back in October of 2017
One more suggestion to Savotta: make it jumpable and add a fast release buckle to each shoulder strap. They are simple add ons that can make a huge difference.

I would love your recommendation when it comes to Sarma RP80 and the Jaakari. Which one would you recommend for a full time heavy duty backpack. Im in a position to only buy one and I do not intend to buy another in the distant future.
Get the Sarma if price is not a problem either way both excellent packs.

I have the same pack, as you too, I did try to purchase the sarma but stock is always low due to high demand but I'm very happy with the pack and the build quality is excellent too. You should also check out packs by Crib Gogh and Warrior assault systems these brands are excellent and build quality is top notch.
the handle is that big actually due to the climate where this bag belongs to... colder areas...
it’s that big so you still can easily grab it with mittens or gloves

I had the pack. I agree it has first rate quality. Nothing like it. However, on my first 6 mile hike, the pack with gear was 25 pounds. That was comfortable. My second hike of 6 miles was with 35 pounds. That was not comfortable. The majority of the weight was on my shoulders. I tried making strap adjustments. That didn’t work. I made internal weight adjustments. That didn’t work. I finished the hike but in pain at the shoulders. I consider myself in good shape. I was disappointed in myself. Sadly, I had to return the pack. If the problem was me, I don’t know what went wrong. If the problem was the pack, perhaps it was too small for my frame at 5’ 10” and 160 pounds. I wanted this pack to work. But, it is actually the 4th pack from a different company, I had to return due to various discomfort at heavier weight or poor fit. I may consider a retry. Thanks for the review.

Would love to know where you stand with this pack today, and how do you like it compared to the Xl. I have the Xl and love it, but been needing something smaller, I think this will work fine.
It's offered for sale by SelfRelianceOutfiters on their website now as well. Just thought would mention as that is where I became interested in it.
You could add a dump pouch on either side to act as a pocket for long items. If they updated this pack to include side pockets and an external zipper access on the lid it would be almost perfect. Although Savotta made great quality gear it's overpriced imo. For what they charge for this pack they could at least throw in the medium sized side pouches and a rain cover.
You should check out the molle sheet for that knife, also sold in varusteleka, should solve the dangling problem

This or a sarma rp80?
I use a USMC issue FILBE main ruck. It's about the same weight, has a huge max capacity, and cones with an external hydration system that can be worn alone and additional sustainment pouches. You can get a new one from Eagle for about the same price, or used/surplus for anywhere from $100 to $200

Belt says 90cm upwards. I'm 6'2" 190 pounds 31 inch waist. Some of the complaints were that waist belt was too long and could not be adjusted snugly enough to shift weight to hips. Large frame, narrow waisted people had issues. Any advice would be appreciated

for the grab handle you could use some shock cord to keep it out of the way vs velcro. For the sides, you could use some strapped pouches, similar to a gun butstock holder that is found on many hunting backpacks like badlands packs. It would not be in the way of the zipper and is removeable...

Pierre Larsion it's not from savotta. Särmä is varustelekas (where's the liquor) own brand that makes millitary style gear. They don't make it for the millitary but it's still a good manufacturer

However you are correct that Särmä is varustelekas own brand and not every product is made by Savotta. I Think the "high end" Särmä stuff seem to be produced by Savotta. I love the Särmä TST RP80 recon, and I use it as my multiday backpack, but I´m looking for something smaller and that is why I asked how it compares.

I would really love to get this pack, but the waistband is 10 inches too big. No way could I wear enough clothing in the summer to fit into that. I am disappointed they dont offer a smaller band.

this Vs. Varusteleka Särmä TST RP80 Recon Pack, which one is better?
It's like comparing apples and pumpkins. TST is basically the discontinued Savotta LJK Modular but with a rolltop and without the lid. Totally different size and carry system. Comparable to Jäkaari XL

Luke I hear you talk about kifaru but I can't find any reviews From you on one. I love the frames from kifaru, I have the military duplex frame and a bikini frame. I also run the reconning pack and woodsman packs on them frames. They are the toughest and most comfortable packs I have ever had the pleasure of wearing.
I'd mabie try a fidlock or some other magnetic catch for that mahosive grab handle.

So in your best opinion: this jaakari pack or you would you go with an eberlestock Destroyer? Seem similar in size so I was hoping to get your opinion.
Tie a piece of para around the loop and tie that to the Molle on top ,that would work.
If you have kydex sheaths ,para the loops on the holster to the side Molle and use the comp straps.
That’s a bulletproof setup too I reckon that work man 🫡
