  • The Eastpointe City Council meeting erupted into chaos on Tuesday night and led to a walkout after the city's mayor, Monique Owens, yelled at residents who were speaking during the public comment section of the meeting. According to the city's UA-cam page, which streamed the meeting, it lasted less than 16 minutes before councilmembers walked up amid screaming back and forth between the mayor and a resident. It all stems from a situation between Owens and one of the councilmembers, Harvey Curley, which allegedly happened at the Gratiot Cruise.

Monique Owens also reported an 80-year-old Black woman, Christine Timmon, to police for protesting one of her campaign events in 2019. The police had to explain to Owens that everyone, not just her, has a right to freedom of speech. She swore an oath to uphold the First Amendment and needs to remember that.

I’m not a trained psychiatrist but I think the mayor may have a teensy weensy problem with control issues.

Basically you don’t get to speak if she doesn’t like it. Not surprised she use to be a cop and I guard he wanted nothing more than to arrest these citizens for daring to say anything about her. I mean she tried to have an 80 year old lady arrested for telling people not to vote for her and had to be told the lady had the freedom of speech.

New York Times vs. Sullivan (1964).
The SCOTUS found that the first amendment represented a profound national commitment to the principles that the debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide open and that such debate may well include vehement and caustic and sometimes unpleasant attacks on government and public officials.

Political offices are a paid service roll and those who are elected to those offices are servants to the community. Maybe the people of that and other communities well glean some wisdom from this mistake. Elect qualified leaders, provide for complete transparency and accountability and be ready to de-throne any person in authority who is incompetent to fulfil the expectations of those they serve.

You can't use your first amendment right to trample on the first amendment right on others. You have a duty, to listen to criticism.
In this circumstance you labeled yourself as a victim and demand that they recognize you as the victim of "assault', even if the courts did not. You're I'm your victim- you're my assailant creates a rift within hte council and if you're applying this attitude to everything discuss- then the citizens have a right to call you out on it.
*** You showed the same level of maturity to the public that the other council member showed to you personally.
With the maturity that you showed there, I wonder if someone praised you and condemned the other for the incident you would allow them to speak fully and even thank them.

1,249 young healthy athletes have suffered sudden heart attacks or other serious issues since last year, disturbing new data has revealed.
Among those to have fallen ill, a staggering 847 have died.
The shocking figures were revealed by Good Sciencing, which has been tracking the deaths and serious health issues of athletes and maintaining a list.
The list shows a huge spike in major medical issues among mostly young athletes that started soaring in early 2021 and continued into this year.
Data for previous years shows only a fraction of sudden deaths and serious health complications in young athletes.
