Hi everyone! I realized, after many of the questions, that some of the instructions were a little confusing. I have more detailed instructions on the blog post: www.farmhouseonboone.com/farmhouse-on-boone/how-to-dye-and-sew-drop-cloth-curtains/ Hope that helps!
I like to find flat king size sheets that have a wonderful pattern or a great solid color. At the top of the sheet I just run an extra seam. It leaves it with a small ruffle at the top when threaded on a curtain rod. My windows are 80" long and king size sheets work great for the right length! I also buy a set of matching pillow cases to make throw pillow covers and tie backs for the curtains. Because the sheets are often on sale I am able to change my look cheaper and faster than buying yardage at a fabric store. But, I have to admit, having a daughter who works for Joann's is a bonus!
How can one person be so amazing and talented? And to do all this on top of being a super Momma?! You’re beyond cool!!!!!! I could only hope to be a mom like you 💛
Another awesome video! Thank you so much. I needed to see the drop cloth curtains and it's something I have been wanting to do for some time. Anything budget friendly but looks great is exactly my style. Plus a little bit of homemade love always adds an extra touch for a perfect farmhouse feel.
This is such a great inexpensive way to get full length curtains. I have the older traditional ceiling to floor windows in some of my rooms and its always so expensive to find curtains from ceiling to floor length so this is great to know. I am definitely headed over to Amazon to get those drop cloths. Great video. Tfs
Ha, I’m not sure if you have a Calico Corners in your area ( it’s a fabric/decorating store) but if you do, they’d be green of envy. A project like yours would cost at least $800 with them. Good job, no frills, just something nice and functional.
I have forgotten to ask this - did you update the electrical in this house or was it already updated? I'm asking because we have a 1923 Tudor and it was the first thing we did before we moved in. My biggest fear when I looked at the wiring (which previously had an "octopus" of wires leading to a fuse box) was a fire.
Do you do anything after youre done dying them in the washing machine? Like an empty rinse cycle or add detergent and do a full cycle to make sure their isnt any residue or is it not an issue? Do you think different water would have different effects yours looks very clear and soft we have hard water here (limescale etc) or bore water which is hot springs water so i was just wondering if you think that might effect the process at all?
I didn't do anything special to clean out the washer, and it doesn't seem to have affected anything. We've done plenty of loads since then! I'm not sure about the different types of water.
EmmaAppleBerry Once the dying process is done, you don’t need to worry about residue in the machine. But I would always wash the items another time right after dying, if it’s clothes...just to be on the safe side with these chemicals. You don’t need to worry about accidentally getting dye on your next load though. As for hard water...the instructions on the dye will tell you, if you need to add extra salt or something like that. Just make sure, to check right when you buy the stuff, so you don’t get caught short!
I love the color and how the drop cloth look in your white room! Did you just dye them right out of the bag? Some people suggest that you breach first to make it soft. Your's look soft enough.
Looks great! I love using drop cloths for curtains etc. I have trouble with the larger sizes having a strange seam running through them though. Have you experienced that?
CSS Chicago Canvas & Supply sells dropcloth on Amazon. You can also purchase directly from the CSS website where they offer dropcloth in a variety of colors. They are aware their cloth is popular for curtains and crafting. No matter where you buy, for best dying results check fabric content for 100% cotton. The blue denim look is perfect for a farmhouse mudroom. And even if the dye job is not perfectly even, that only adds charm to a "blue jeans" curtain.
This is really helpful! I read somewhere else that Rit wouldn’t work on canvas but obviously yours took the color very well, and I love the shade. What about when you washed them, did you lose much color?
Okay. I tried this and my drop cloth frayed like CRAZY during the dye "wash" cycle...which ironically, my husband told me would happen. Lol!! I bought your suggested canvas from Amazon this time, and will try again. Should I not cut it before dyeing? It is 9x12. Thanks!
So nice. Never guessed that the dye would take so well. I hope the person who finished your floors doesn't watch this. I was so nervous while your poured that dye over your floor!
Okay so I got confused when you put the boiling water in the washer. After you put the boiling water and salt do you let it sit in there or start the wash? 🙋🏻🤗
Sorry I realized later that I made this video super confusing. I shared much better, more detailed instructions, on the blog! www.farmhouseonboone.com/farmhouse-on-boone/how-to-dye-and-sew-drop-cloth-curtains/
Do you use drop cloth because you like the material or is it economical? I was also holding my breath when you were pouring that dye. You're a brave girl!
I didn’t know about salt! Although it’s been 10+years since I’ve dyed anything. Maybe I’ll get brave and get a sewing machine. My curtains are completely unfinished fabric I’ve doubled up and fold edges in 😂
Laurie Hamerlynck just like salt helps set the dye, if you buy fabric rich in color or a dress with navy blue and white stripes, you can add vinegar to the wash to set the colors so they won't fade and the blue won't run into the white
Plastic tub or stove method is fine for small stuff but you wouldn’t want to deal with all that fabric and stirring constantly and wringing it out would be a nightmare. Washer method comes out with more even color. I also start the washer and add the fabric as it adgitates so there is no blotchyness. I use it all the time and just run a cycle of warm water with some bleach at the end when you are done to make sure all color is out of the washer for when you do your regular laundry.

That's a great option for some cheap yardage!
Dear Lisa you have changed my life for the better. I am never buying curtains AGAING !!! I loveee you 😁😁😁😁
I asked you once if you used curtains, I must not have been paying attention, you're amazing!
How can one person be so amazing and talented? And to do all this on top of being a super Momma?! You’re beyond cool!!!!!! I could only hope to be a mom like you 💛
Wow! Thanks so much for your sweet words.
Ty this is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Gona dye my patio drop cloth curtains black!! Yesss!! Thank you
LOVE those curtains....they look really nice in there!!!!
Beautiful! I love how the blue turned out!!
Great diy! I found your blog post on this to be a big help answering any lingering questions I had! Love the look of the mudroom!
I love the curtains. So vibrant and pretty.
Thanks so much!
Also they look gorgeous! my favourite colour blue (for decor clothing linens etc) is that fresh bright navy that feels very vintage and classic.

I'm so glad you did this video. This is exactly what I was looking for!! You're the best. Many thanks !!!

Yes! That amount of yardage can be SO pricey!!
How would you dye with a front loader washer? You cannot add hot water prior To starting it... HELP!
😬😉
You pour into into the detergent dispenser. They have all the information on ritdye.com

I don't, but I have shopped there online. This would have been super pricey! Only $60 for the materials to make these. :)
Good morning! Great video! I’m going to put these up in my classroom.
How have the blue curtains held up to sunlight? Any fading?
Beautiful!! Love the color and how it turned out ❤️👍🏼🧵
Thanks!
Looks so good Lisa. Thank you for sharing.
I love this idea and they look perfect for that room. Thanks Lisa!
That was amazing!! I had no idea how to dye anything. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing! I loved this idea when you shared it in your mudroom video and am excited to give this a try.
It is super easy to get great results! :)
Love this! I did this a long time ago but this process seems 100x easier than how I did mine!
It was surprisingly simple!
Do you do anything after youre done dying them in the washing machine? Like an empty rinse cycle or add detergent and do a full cycle to make sure their isnt any residue or is it not an issue?

Such a smarty pants! Bravo!
Hello Lisa! Nice job, they look great!
Looks great! I love using drop cloths for curtains etc. I have trouble with the larger sizes having a strange seam running through them though. Have you experienced that?
Ty very nice just what I was looking for
Where did you get the drip cloth you used in the video? What brand please if anyone knows.
CSS Chicago Canvas & Supply sells dropcloth on Amazon. You can also purchase directly from the CSS website where they offer dropcloth in a variety of colors. Darling 💕. And so doable!!
How did you clean your wash machine with all the dye in it
Bleach
I didn't do anything and didn't notice any dye being left in there. The rinse cycle took care of it.
Fabulous! Nice job!
They look fantastic . Can I ask why you iron out the floor if I tried that I would have problems getting back up again lol .
Just because It's a large flat surface to work on.
I live in Florida and love navy and white together. Does the navy fade in the sun with the Rit dye?
i haven't had that experience!
Can you do this with a front loading washer? Thanks for all the videos!
Yes! 😀
This is really helpful! I read somewhere else that Rit wouldn’t work on canvas but obviously yours took the color very well, and I love the shade. What about when you washed them, did you lose much color?
Hi Lisa, do you use a special needle in your machine when sewing your drop cloth curtains? Love how they turned out.
Can these be put in the dryer after dying? I know your blog tutorial says to hang dry, but I’d love to just use the dryer. Thanks!!
Thank you so much! I can not wait to try this out!
Quick question. What would I need to do if I bought curtains from a local thrift store to dye them black, no other colors??
What a great idea!!
Yeah! Love my Speed Queens!
Me too! The best.
Beautiful! You did a great job!
Great tutorial. I've been waiting for this since you posted the mudroom reveal.
You’re so clever! Great tips for this project. I really want to try to replicate your idea! 🥰

Lisa, I love your videos 😍
Thank you!
Love them!!!
How do you keep dye from ruining future loads?
You have to bleach the machine with soap in the full cycle.
I didn't even think about that honestly. We've had several loads since then and I didn't notice any staining.
I wander how u bleach them to make ur pillows..???? Can u make a video on that pls?
www.farmhouseonboone.com/farmhouse-on-boone/how-to-make-drop-cloth-perfectly-soft-and-white/
Love it !
Can you tell me why the salt?
So nice. Never guessed that the dye would take so well. I hope the person who finished your floors doesn't watch this. I was so nervous while your poured that dye over your floor!
😂😂
What room have you claimed for your sewing room? The drop cloth curtains look gr8 Lisa. I bet the dying was a palava.
I don't have one claimed yet, but it will probably be a corner in the living room or dining room.
Okay so I got confused when you put the boiling water in the washer. After you put the boiling water and salt do you let it sit in there or start the wash? 🙋🏻🤗

Awesome. I am just trying to figure out the hot water/boiling water add to a front loader machine
You could also just turn up your hot water heater. Just make sure to turn it back down so you don't burn yourself.
You can pour it in the soap dispenser area :-) I have never dyed fabric in my front loader, but have added hot water for washing cloth diapers.
Nice
Love this!!
Do you have a video on how to bleach drop cloths? ❤️
Yes I do! ua-cam.com/video/fm73TAinbY0/v-deo.html
Thank you 🙌🏻
Do you use drop cloth because you like the material or is it economical? I was also holding my breath when you were pouring that dye. You're a brave girl!
Yep! It's about $2 per yard.
Wait a minute...did that sweater become a pillow in a later video?? Haha. Sure looks famiiar.
I didn’t know about salt! Although it’s been 10+years since I’ve dyed anything. Maybe I’ll get brave and get a sewing machine. My curtains are completely unfinished fabric I’ve doubled up and fold edges in 😂
I miss my top load washer.. :(
What does the salt do?
It's supposed to help the fabric take the dye.
Laurie Hamerlynck just like salt helps set the dye, if you buy fabric rich in color or a dress with navy blue and white stripes, you can add vinegar to the wash to set the colors so they won't fade and the blue won't run into the white
Lovely 💕. What was the total cost for the curtains?
Around $60 total.
Farmhouse on Boone thank you 😘
Never dye your stuff in a washing machine! Just get a plastic tub.
Why is that? I had no issues with it.
Farmhouse on Boone Could stain washer, other clothes.
@@dimples7334 Where do you put the colored water once your done?
Leslie Valenciano-Lopez Dump it outside in the yard
Plastic tub or stove method is fine for small stuff but you wouldn’t want to deal with all that fabric and stirring constantly and wringing it out would be a nightmare. Will you adopt me?
😂
I away dye my thing in my washing machine, after I dye my thing I just use bleach to clean the machine,. I never have a problem.
I just put it on the rinse cycle and had no issues.
Gurrl.... first you poured the dye over your wood floors then you ironed on them🖐bye. Lol
