Rublev is a great competitive and a great champion, but his behaviour in the last few months is out of control. He screamed at a photographer in Shanghai, he screamed at an umpire in a UTS event in December and now this. Even if him being defaulted is harsh you can’t go round shouting in people faces like that.
I don't think it's harsh at all, everyone deserve the same respect as the next person so they made the right decision. It's also a good lesson to him hopefully that in the future he will think twice before just going off on someone like that.

Can't get in their face. It's a direct default. Rublev got away with cursing the umpire in 2021, but umpire gave him a warning only or didn't hear it very clearly

I think it's cool, actually. Tennis judges/umps are soft. In almost any other sport in the world, they are expected to have a thicker skin.
Exactly! That's why the actual words he spoke or didn't speak don't matter all that much. His action was very aggressive, hostile, and disrespectful. You can argue and become angry now and then. But making an aggressive move right up in the official's face like that is way out of line. Right decision. The supervisor should have said that to Rublev when he denied he swore. "You're not being defaulted for swearing. You're being defaulted for behaving in an aggressive and disrespectful way towards the official."
Shouldn’t he have gotten a code violation warning instead of a disqualification? Getting defaulted just for swearing seems a bit too much.

As much as I like and admire Rublev, he was definitely in the wrong to be screaming in someone’s face like that. It opens him up to face disciplinary action like this. Had he stayed out on the court and said a few words in the line judge’s direction, fine. But to go up into their face like that is completely unacceptable and he needs to learn to control his emotions.
Rublev did the same thing last year in Shanghai, he screamed his lung out in front of a camera guy, "lucky" for him, there was a buffer between him and the photojournalists, the umpire just gave him a warning.

Judges also need to be more professional and respect their work cause their unprofessional mistakes may have huge impact on professional players. Mutual respect is needed and please don’t aim only at Rublev.
There's no good reason why in 2024, the Hawk-Eye line calling system is not implemented at every ATP and WTA sanctioned tennis tournaments.
Tennis is a game of millimeters. It's a shame when chair umpires and line judges are still allowed to negatively impact matches with incorrect out calls or make no calls when the ball is actually out.
Serena weren't defaulted for literally threatening a line umpire with “i’ll shove the tennis ball down your throat”, so a point penalty should've been more than enough. This is dscrimination in 4k.
She never said she’d shove the tennis ball down the umpires throat, nor did she call him a moron. She called him a thief for taking a point from her and she was punished by losing a game. Let’s straighten that out first.
Do I think he should’ve been defaulted? No I think if this verbal insult did happen maybe have him lose a game. However being that Bublik was up 6-5 in the last set, Rublev losing a game would’ve resulted in him also losing the match. So maybe that’s why they went for a default…

As much as I love Rublev personality off-court, he's just a psycho inside of it. Lots of cursing, self harming, he really should seek professional help. Not the first, second or third time he sees himself involved in this sort of situation. Sooner or later, his reputation starts to bite him in the ass.

I can't believe that this happened. I feel for Rublev and the fans. Did he deserve to be penalized? Yes. Did he deserve to be defaulted? No.
That just shows the inconsistencies of the rules in tennis since similar degrees of action haven't been punished nearly as bad as this or even punished at all. Don't forget that players like Tsitsipas, Serena, Kyrigio, etc, have done terrible things, but they haven't been defaulted, which further proves the inconsistencies of tennis rules.
I understand that Rublo's antics are going to be detrimental to himself, and this was the result. What I don't know is why didn't they ask the ACTUAL person who Rublo yelled at if he spoke in Russian or not, or better yet, check a video feed if Rublo swore in Russian or not.

It seems that some tennis players see themselves as above the status of the ball people and umpires. I love that Rublev was taught a lesson. No one should have to be subjected to having someone yelling in their face when they are just doing their job.
Problem with this is the lack of consistency in all of these calls.
It's all political.
When Rublev wanted the tournament Director to check on the video whether he used or not they should check and then take a decision on the default, but it seems he is more interested in punishing a Russian player and bringing smiles to Ukraine and its NATO allies. If Rublev really made that mistake he deserves to be punished, but he says he didn't use that word means they should check and then take a final call.....it's very partial behaviour on the part of tournament Director and the victim is not only Rublev, but the sport as well

As many have said, Rublev is a genuine nice guy who turns into an ugly monster in the heat of competition. He's got to find a way to get control over his emotions; if he doesn't, he'll continue to have this type of incidents, and he'll also never surpass the level of tennis he has already acheived.
I'm a little over this "he's a nice guy" tbh at this point. If he is "genuine" nice, these things wouldn't be happening. Genuine doesn't mean "when it's convenient".

I also have experience in my family with this kind of rage. The part that crosses the line is directing it at that umpire aka the people around us. I hope you can find a way to play this game again if it makes you happy ❤. I guess my point is not that he is 100 a bad guy, but that these outbursts are just as much a part of his genuine character as his good sides. I hope he addresses it.
Rublev has been throwing tantrums for years. He throws fits all the time. Many of these younger players these days do not know how to handle pressure and allow their emotions to take over and act rude and abusive. The ATP allowed Nick to get away with terrible behavior for years which set a precedent. This is a good sign that things might change and players will know that you cannot be abusive towards the officials on the court.

This is the proof that double standards among the judges exist cause we witnessed very similar, if not worse, episodes and the player in question WAS NOT disqualified. Also, there are all these cameras and microphones EVERYWHERE and they said "No" when Andrey asked to check video and sound? and towards the very end of the match? Really?

Regardless of whether or not he said a scribble, that attitude of the Tennis Player towards a Judge should be unacceptable, I don't know if the sanction should be so drastic (there could be a post-match financial punishment), because it can't come to anything either.

When Serena did the same with the line manager, if I remember correctly, it was a point penalty. She continued to lose and played all cards diversity, mother, Color what not. Still finished the match.
You cannot pressure a linesman like that, get into their face and abuse using bad words. If Rublev wouldn't be DQ, then that linesman would be pressured to call the balls in on Rublev's side even if it was out, because of the abuse he received earlier. It was the right decision. This is not the first time Rublev has foul-mouthed officials.
If it didn't happen here it would happen down the road a little further: Rublev, for all his "Mr Nice Guy" aspects has been flirting with trouble for some time now. Fingers crossed he takes this as a clear sign to do some serious work towards changing his mentality while on the court: it's costing him matches.

It's a disciplinary measure, Don't insult the judges while shaking a blunt heavy instrument just inches from their face. Fair or not, you will be disqualified. And get help for your rage issues.

I’m a Rublev fan, and it seems everyone on the tour says he is a great guy, so I’m sure he is. I’ve also played in countless tournaments (NOT pro) and watched a ton of tennis over the years (live and on TV). I know this doesn’t mean I’m any sort of an expert, but I think a DQ was absolutely warranted just based on how aggressive he was toward the line judge alone - and regardless of what he said, and in whatever language. I’m sick of seeing players disrespecting the judges and even worse, the ball kids. These people (AND children; the ball kids…) should not have to put up with any of this mistreatment. Question a call…sure; no one is perfect. But yelling in anyone’s face the way Rublev did in this case is simply not acceptable. Too bad to see an otherwise great match end this way, but absolutely the right decision in my opinion.

What he said wasn’t good and not the best behavior, but it’s soo pathetic by a supervisor to trust another side ref who translated Andrey’s words in a harsher way. Nick had called refs straight in a face much harsher than Andrey just did in Russian. Really bad reffing

This was unfair. Bublik threw a tantrum after he lost the first game of the third set. He broke his racquet and he berated the chair umpire for several minutes, but he was not penalized on points (and he was not defaulted). What Rubley did was more intense but also a lot shorter. It was bad, but no worse than Bublik’s tantrum.
Both deserved a point penalty. Nobody deserved to be disqualified.

Did Rublev already have code violations against him in this match? A player is generally allowed a warning, then point penalty, then game penalty followed by default. If this was his third strike, I can see why they made this decision. If not, this doesn't make any sense.
Swearing at a line empire is immediate default and does not require previous warnings. Same as with Djokovic when he hit a line judge with a ball by accident.
no, unsportsmanslike conduct can lead to a default even if it happens once. Chair umpire informs the supervisor and then he decides if it's a default or not.

I've seen like thousands of cases in the last 20 yrs when Tennis Players were cursing on the chair umpire, and saying much worse words at the umpire than Rublev (if its true that he said such things) and the best they got was warning, this is ridiculous and embarrassment!!

No. Letting bias/disdain for a person cloud objective morality is pretty cheap and is a really slippery slope. The line guy who accused him in the first place will probably not face any consequences for lying and that's also quite unfair.

Yes, Rublev lost his temper and did wrong. But he should have been given a warning and asked to apologize for screaming in his face. I absolutely agree with the default decision. Rublev's actions were completely over the line regardless of what he said. I also must commend the line judge's composure. If a big giuy came at me this aggressively with a racquet in his hand, I don't believe I would've taken it sitting down.

I think they have to review the video tape and the second most important things are all bettings on spots platform to be sure that there were no unusual bettings. Since the betting became more lucrative than even spots itself , nothing should be excluded from investigation

Everyone disses him for shouting in the lineman's face but you don’t know how frustrating and unfair it is to be accused that the ball is out when it was in. His anger was valid. Also there was no actual proof that it was out
First of all, did he swear at the line judge? They didn't even bother to check the camera footage and disqualified him, not fair. Secondly, there should be warning first before flat out disqualifying. I think ATP is so f**king screwed up.

I’m a fan of Andrei’s, but I think the umpire made the right decisions. In the NBA even just being snippy with the ref is a technical foul and two Ts you’re out. In football it’s a yellow card-same concept. Shouting in the face of a judge should not be tolerated.
The problem here is consistency. Players have done worse and been given point or game foul’s but not defaults. Serena did far worse and got a point penalty which lead to her losing a match. Novak with the ball abuse hitting the ball person unintentionally. Rublev may have been wrong here but in retrospect he yelled at someone. Serena threatened that line judge and was given a point penalty lol. Let’s stay consistent.
In the future they should be defaulted absolutely, they got it wrong with Serena but they got it right here. Rublev needed to be taught a lesson about his on court rage, and if he just got a code violation it sends a message that anyone can start going up to line judges and start threatening them. Also not only does he scream in the dudes face but he then straight up lies to the supervisor instead of being honest and apologising, it could’ve gone either way but they had every right to boot him out
There is no way Rublev should've been defaulted for that. He has a right to be mad at bad calls. The guy who said he swore in Russian probably just made that up but they just rolled with it and defaulted him. That's pathetic. In professional sports it's ok to yell at the refs for bad calls because the steaks are so high, also peoples jobs and so much money are on the line. To me it didn't look like what Rublev did was even that bad.

I can't believe that this happened. I feel for Rublev and the fans. Did he deserve to be penalized? Yes. Did he deserve to be defaulted? No.
That just shows the inconsistencies of the rules in tennis since similar degrees of action haven't been punished nearly as bad as this or even punished at all. Don't forget that players like Tsitsipas, Serena, Kyrigio, etc, have done terrible things, but they haven't been defaulted, which further proves the inconsistencies of tennis rules.
I understand that Rublo's antics are going to be detrimental to himself, and this was the result. What I don't know is why didn't they ask the ACTUAL person who Rublo yelled at if he spoke in Russian or not, or better yet, check a video feed if Rublo swore in Russian or not.
