I BAILED! Tick Nightmare + THANK YOU For 1 Year On Youtube

  • My celebration of 1 year on UA-cam didn’t go quite as planned! What was originally supposed to be a summit bivi of Cnicht was changed to a summit bivi of Yr Arddu, which I then ended up bailing on - it's been over 2 weeks now and this experience still makes me shudder! 😖
    Thank you so much for watching me for 1 year now 🥰 All of you guys who have been here since the start, and all my new subscribers too, I appreciate you all so much and am so grateful that you like to watch me doing what I love
    ..THANK YOU! ❤
    See part one of this trip here: • A Night In A Mountain ...
    Lyme disease.. (among other things that ticks transmit) is a seriously nasty, potentially life-changing illness that you don’t wanna get. Check yourself thoroughly EVERY time you travel through long grass, ferns and anywhere that you make contact with foliage. Don’t panic if you get bitten but do get them off. They are unlikely to transmit Lyme if they are promptly removed before they start feeding. Look up how to remove them safely and kill each one only after it is removed. Experts disagree on how long it takes for ticks to transmit Lyme, but it is generally thought to take over 24 hours
    After this trip, my car had to have a hardcore interior cleaning. I bought a new drone, sent my camera for repair again (the battery compartment broke on Yr Arddu). And replaced my potentially-infested socks and my waterproof over-trousers, which I'd ripped. So it turned out to be a bit of an expensive and knackering trip. My health, thankfully, has been fine

    Hi Clair, i first came across your channel mid July, and it has changed my life. I have been widowed for just over 8 years and not had a holiday in that time, by the first week of August i had bought tent, backpack boots ect ect changed the thirsty Merc for a diesel Saab and was on my way to Cumbria. Absolutely loved it. Have since been back there again, and just recently come back from a few days at Dovedale. Have seen some wonderful misty mornings, spectacular sunsets, 3 RAF Typhoons flying low over Skiddaw and a naked man running down Blencathra 🤔🤔 !!!!. Am now researching lightweight tents ect to go wild camping in Wales and Scotland. Thanks for the inspiration, and the gear guides and look forward to your next video. Finally, for anyone that has got this far, i am a almost 68year old, semi retired NHS bank worker, don't let age stop you, get out there and enjoy our beautiful country. Take care James 😊

      At 72, I started fell walking again this year. Used to do it a lot in my youth. Thought it was all over but not so, I just needed someone to do it with. Not quite as brave as you and Clair, to do it alone. But that's ok. x

    You made a rough trek, lost your drone, dealt with a lot, and came back to tell about it. Not a fail. Just pushing tough, but having enough sense to recognize when it was time to call it. Loved the sound of the rain on the car. I'd have slept there a bit too after all that. And enjoyed it. I've lived in many places, including 4 years in the interior of Alaska. I feel the same way about mosquitos as you do those ticks. I've been in Southwest Texas since 1996 now. Being able to lay in bed or lean back in my truck and listen to the rain is a rare treat these days. Much respect and wishing you a long and wonderful life.

    OMG I don't blame you for bailing. I've been 'out and about' most of my life (54 years) - North of England, Wales, bits and bobs around the world, all without being attacked by ticks once. I now live in the far north of Scotland (not even a foresty mountainous bit) and in the ten years of being up here I've been put off going out by the ticks. I thought it was just me they liked - clearly not. So mushroom foraging, wild camping, even cycling! is all affected by having to factor in the tick problem. You are indeed a trooper par excellence and a massive inspiration - thank you.

  • @duncanmcewan1049

    When you mentioned checking "bits" for ticks - I shuddered. That's a firm no... Tick bites are never pleasant, but that would be beyond a joke !
    Love the videos - I have not done anything like this since I was a lot younger and now physically just can't even contemplate it, so I enjoy trekking by proxy :) As far as your "fail" is considered - I see a fail as putting yourself in an unsafe or unpleasant situation. This is meant to be fun and removing stress - if your safety is threatened in any way, bailing out is the right thing to do. A single tick bite is not fun, but 30 or 40 of the little sods... no way!!
    Thanks for letting us explore with you - hopefully you will get up my "neck of the woods" (Scotland), as we have some pretty respectable scenery up here too :)

    thank you for being so honest about 'bailing'. I had to bail on my second bikecamping trip a few weeks ago. my gut was telling me it was going to be too much for my body to handle. I had just finished a 152km weeklong bikecamp with my dog and a prior two months worth of riding. so I was in need of a rest from over a total of approximately 1200km of biking in 60 days. I was so disappointed, but listened and cancelled my campsite for that week. as the days went, I started to realize that i wasn't feeling well and if I had pushed through, I would have been sick and alone in the rain for days with my dog. So glad I cancelled and stayed home. there will always be other trips and the confidence I gained by listening to my body is invaluable.

    • @jorymil
      @jorymil Місяць тому

      Whoa! That's a lot of riding without a break. I have periods in my life where I ride a ton, and yeah... after about 2 or 3 months, my body just needs a break for a few weeks. Train from March for a couple of longer rides in June/early July, then gear back up again in late July for a longer fall ride.

    Hello WildBeare and thank you for this video. I've been following for about a year and love your videos, but this one was particularly meaningful for me. About 4 years ago I became obsessed with the idea of rowing solo across the Atlantic. I started training, did courses, bought a boat and started building a following so that I could raise money for a couple of charities. Then a few months ago I went out for a training session from Bridlington and everything changed. I don't really know what it was but there was a voice in my head (no I wasn't hallucinating), and it was saying "you can't do this". I thought about it long and hard and decided eventually that I had to bail. It's not easy giving up on something like that but your video has helped me to put it into some kind of perspective and come to terms with it. Looking forward to the next video!

Reality is I probably won’t, but I can at least get some vicarious experience here. Secondly is that these adventures speak to the strength of individual character and determination to fill one’s life with experiences one could not get easily. It is an analogy for life. When I first bought the farm I live on in Canada, the land was very wild, lots of deer ( tick carriers!) every time I walked out the door it seemed I brought back a few “little friends”! My dogs and horses got them too so it seemed I was forever removing the bloodthirsty little monsters! I am relieved to report that cutting back the grasses and grazing the horses has removed the tick problem. I still tuck pants in socks etc if I’m walking on the wilder parts of the property though! I HATE TICKS ! Love your videos❤️

Great to see how it's grown in the last 12 months with the content and quality going from strength to strength. A shame about having to bale out on this trip but that's an insane amount of ticks you collected and safety comes first.. Here's to the next 12 months adventures and many more beyond that. Like so many others I love the channel and congratulations on your first year! Never worry about the trips you take or how they turn out, I expect that most of us are here for your great attitude and positivity!
    I worked outdoors for years and share your loathing of ticks, I can highly recommend treating your clothes with any available form of permethrin, it is great at repelling ticks and other biting insects. I know many people have strong views on some of these harsher chemical products, but with all the diseases that can me passed through insect bites, I always felt it was a compelling case. Best of luck, looking forward to more adventures i the coming year !!

      @seazenbones6945 2 роки тому

      As an Australian bush walker, I strongly agree. I spray the strongest insect repellent I can on my clothes, prior to each walk and after every major stop. I haven’t had a problem with leaches, tics, flies or mosquitoes for years. I like to minimise the amount of heavy chemicals in my life, but having had to have minor surgery from my GP 30 years ago to remove an unfound tic and the amount of Ross River Fever here, down under 🇦🇺, I no longer feel guilty about using heavy duty insect repellent on my clothes, pack, face, ears and neck. Not to mention, the spiders here can pack a mean bite at times.

      @@seazenbones6945 If it were every day, _maybe_ you'd risk issues, but man... the risk to your sanity by _not_ using repellent is just too much. I'll look up Ross River Fever: here in the US, it's Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever; you want neither. I've gotten lucky with the ticks, but still had to have my spinal fluid checked for Lyme. It's a sensation I'll never forget: my boss wondered if I was coming back to work after, and I just had to laugh.

    I got a tick bite and never knew about it until next morning I was shivering uncontrollably so I went to a Doctor who knew what it was and gave me 6 weeks supply of antibiotics, these helped a lot. I have a supply of a product called ,''Fogger", so you put all your stuff laid out on the floor then put the fogger right in the middle of the room, pull the tab and get out damn quick ! Leave the room shut for 24 hours then go back in, open the window and allow fresh air to get into the room, shake all your stuff out in the garden and you will be pest free ! Your channel is interesting but solo camping overnight is a risk, if our daughter ever wanted to go solo camping overnight then I would tell her to take her dog along

    You should consider investing in Permethrin. You can treat all your clothes, rucksacks, anything fabric based with it, and it will kill Ticks on contact for ~6 weeks or ~6 wash cycles. It is highly toxic to aquatic life and cats in it's liquid form, so care needs to be taken applying it to clothes; but it is the most effective long term tick deterrent available. Combining it with smidge is the way to go. It also kills any midge that land on your clothes. Worth it when going off trail or in peak beastie season. It can even be applied to tents or sleeping bag liners.

    • @RukDaWho
      @RukDaWho 3 роки тому

      Wanted to check if someone else mentioned this, I fully concur. Works great in the USA in tick country and doesn't cause problems on synthetic materials like DEET. Also won't rinse away in rain or other wet conditions. Of course you should test a small patch of materials to see if you have allergic reaction. Perfect for a light sleeping bag liner that can double as a wipe for your back and hard to reach places. BTW, I do have a cat and as long as the treated items are fully dry, the cat will be ok. With this, you can defeat the ticks and go where you haven't gone before. Permethrin is widely used for this and certain parasitic maladies which you can look up to determine if this is the right solution for you. Good luck

    Couple of questions, did you have your mobile with you on the trip? If so, dependant on reception you should be able to get your exact route and find where you dropped your drone. Plus, have you looked into teatree oil? It's an amazing tick repellent. Totally natural and non toxic.
