My husband and I went to Mt. Baldy years ago. We really liked it being from Central Indiana where everything is very flat. It was quite a chance of pace for us. Thanks for sharing
Mt Baldy is generally closed to the public now (guided tours only). The reason? Well, ... 1. The foot traffic kills much of the vegetation that keep the dune from moving (it's currently taking over the parking lot by several feet each year) ... and movement like that can lead to ... 2. SINK HOLES. It's actually relatively dangerous to venture out there without a guide. The movement of the dune has caused living trees to be completely buried. They eventually die underneath the sand, and as they deteriorate, it leaves a void in the sand that can give way to anyone who happens to hike over it.. There was a boy got swallowed up by one several years ago. He was buried under 11 feet of sand for several hours. So yeah, the screams *could* have been a small sinkhole someone came across perhaps.
As a local, I don't recommend even stopping at Portage Beach because it is the worst spot in this park. The water is the dirtiest there. Any other spot is best.
My least favorite National Park. Kind of a fraud for a National treasure. Surrounded by seel mills, power plants, pollution. Even the Department of Interior didn’t support the designation. Far better candidates up the shore in Michigan. You did a good job of showcasing the minimal features. Kudos.

Love this thank you I will be here in August can't wait 😊
nice and chill im visiting soon so thanks
Hiking in sand is worse than snow. I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating...and it gets everywhere.
What month did you go
I went in early June!
