Legion is about musicality and blend. They have power but that’s not their focus. They take you on a musical journey through dynamics- not just screaming the entire way down the highway. I really wish folk would learn that LOUD doesn’t mean BETTER.
I don’t think loud means better. If that was the case I would have said Southern won but I didn’t. I can appreciate different approaches to music.
@@likemikeonyt I didn’t say you said that, I was speaking on the topic of “loudness” in general. I know many ppl believe “cranking” is all that matters in HBCU bands and I wanted to clear the record on that lol! All good tho

There's a time and place for wind ensemble and a time to be heard across the field. Only wood winds you hear are piccolos and check the tape, SU's are heard very well.
That we sound better crap is the "go to" for all bands the Jukebox meet since they cannot meet us on power. They display power back at us in spurts just to prove that they can. We display power because it's who we are.
Jackson State is the perfect band for this topic. Years ago they used to claim this same crap, that we sound better because all SU does is play loud. Well, they and other bands have adopted our writing for power style, not the other way around.
We've remained true to our writing for power from day 1, and we took it with us to more Superbowls, presidential inaugurations, rosebowl parades than most bands.
So we are the most imitated marching band on planet earth, right Jackson St?
So if NSU is so great at what they do, why does their popularity struggle across the entire HBCU apparatus?
One thing is certain year in and year out, the Jukebox is the band to beat, not NSU. Who doesn't know the Jukebox? But many will ask you, NS who?😮
We, NSU, don't really do loud. Our focus is balance and blend.
Tell me what the spartan guards did that most drum majors don't do? It's just our drum majors run the show and we not about dancing.
I didn't love either song but it's early in the season like you said. To early to call anything.

@@lukelucas8112 Man please. At the worse we would be behind SU and JSU. At best we would compete just the same. We have seen both ASU and TxSU head to head. We have also been to Queen City and the NBOTB (with both SU and JSU in attendance) before so who have we not heard?

The JUKE is not ASU, or TXSU...like I said Norfolk would b 4th or 5th...its no competition in the MEAC...
Queen City and NBOTB....yall keep that we will continue to do the ROSE BOWL PARADE, Presidential Inaugurations, and continue to have the Fabulous Dancing Dolls perform with the likes of Madonna, Beyonce etc.....

Being apart of the spartan legion our focus is balance and sounding good as an assemble not just playing loud and blowing for whatever reason… we are a musical band

Totally agree with you on su trombones. They always sound so thin which I hate man euphoniums definitely over powering.
After years of listening to them I honestly think that’s their goal to sound that way. I feel like that because it’s consistently the same way each year

You couldn’t have thought I was being serious. Michael Banks. Bandhead. Marched in a collegiate program from freshman to senior. Was a section leader in the program. And you think I only heard them three times 😂😂 I’m just exaggerating big bro
NSU will never have a section overpower the band. (Speaking about the btones) and most likely they they splitting parts with the trombones.

Like Mike, what is your preferred band sir? You called out SU and NSU as trash. However, they are my favorite 2 bands. You get the best of both worlds with both bands. SU gives you the loud sound with their swagger in the stands and NSU provides great field shows no matter what. My 3rd favorite is Jackson State. Based on your comments I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson State is your number 1. Please share!
I don’t mind either band to be honest. I’m a Jackson State guy so the hate for southern is natural. If you watch my reaction to them playing Thank God you’ll see that I can give them they props. I think they did great with that. Norfolk is a great band as well. Their style is not my thing but I can appreciate it.
Cool! I was in Houston to see all bands. It was a great experience. Was my second time going and a great turnout.
That’s ok with the SU versus NS who? Comparison. The last field show battles I’ve seen when SU and Norfolk were in the house together head to head and Norfolk took top honors every time. Not just talk these are facts do your research. I still say these are two top programs. Money is won on the field not in the stands.

@@cran3247 yes cran, Southern U didn't know either? it needs work. To me the counts are rushed and over played for this #? Annihilate, has a lot of breaks and Bass Line grunge. Maybe to pull this arrangement off give the Xylophones a Solo and go back to the Bridge! Listen carefully to this song? Has dirt and percussion as sound effects🥁 Top Brass overkill timing ask me? So far no HBCU Band has played it well. But season opener there's time to work on this arrangement. All them Tubas, write them a Solo? With sirens going off in the mix! Yeah, sounds Haunted! 4 real.💀
Um... Your stance is your stance overall and I cant really fault you for that. I do have a problem. Your comments in the end said SU has no trombone presence. Besides the break, The trombones where holding chords with the baritones the majority of the song. It is easy to identify when they play. You can also use those queues to hear where they are coming in. I do think you were being overly critical with that part. One can clearly hear the bone sliding into different notes with those chord changes. Especially @1:45 though to the break.
My problem with the trombone’s specifically is the numbers don’t match the sound. Im a trombone player myself and I sometimes question their approach with the way they play and the way they assign parts. For me it’s a bit to top heavy and a little thin. But to each it’s own
Light edge to Norfolk. They were the underdog going up against the jukebox. That should have been a one way battle.

Two different bands on two different levels loud as someone comments is not always mean you are better NSU is a lot more musicianship than Southern
