I disagree, the game was great until the ending. Thor's death was just terribly written, he got one shotted, which just doesnt seem realistic. Better ways to have him die. When thor does die though, his family legitimely does not seem to care. They look like NPC's after witnessing someone they know die. 0 emotion. All of that character development of his daughter telling him she loved him, and him finally seeing that he can change and be like kratos, a better father, down the drain. And dont get me started on the rift, you spend half of atreus getting the mask for it, only for him to break it in the end. Waste of time. Kratos and everyone at one point even say its atreus choice, if it was such a danger to use the mask, kratos would not have given him the choice in the end. The rift could have been a give and take realtionship. It asks for something to give something, could have been a way to find the giants, save brok etc. They went with the most general ass ending ever, playing it very safe with no risks. My last problem with the games ending were the pacing issues and ragnarok. Ragnarok was underwhelming. You only saw the elves fight, no other race was there. It was a 2D path to the lodge, fighting 4 enemies at a time till thor and then odin.

God of war 2018 wasn't building up Tyr to be the Norse version of Kratos. It was building him up to be the opposite of Kratos. "You can either serve yourself or put your godhood in the service of others."

I also think it gives Kratos something to aspire to be and also subtly make him feel inadequate as a role model for Atreus, and thats only brought up more when Odin said Kratos never knew any sort of love from godhood, which is pretty sad and its what makes you genuinely feel happy when fate/prophecy showed that yeah you can be that kind of god too Kratos

Because leading up to the start of the game, he WAS. He WAS the god of war but he gave it up just like Kratos tried to twice. Kratos’s entire story was focused on not wanting to be the god of war again but also needing to do anything to protect his family, thus pushing him further and further. To have “proof” of someone successfully making the transition to full-fledged pacifist and prove to be entirely useless in the world Kratos and company find themselves in made the twist more impactful imo

"So many characters that arent fleshed out" Kratos finally regain his humanity back and learn how to be more open and merciful towards his enemies, Freya from being a vengeful mother chasing Kratos finally realized there's nothing to gain from revenge but more to gain from forgiveness like FINALLY BECOMING FREE FROM ODIN'S IMPRISONMENT AND REGAINING HER WINGS BACK AS A QUEEN OF VALKERIE. Brok becoming an actual friend to Kratos next to Mimir and dying after sniffing out the lie of Odin and also learns to forgive his brother for lying to him, Sindri turning from being a lovable companion to being a broken man after actually losing everything and the one to actually have a downward character arc. Thor finally standing up to his abuser/dad after sucking all the guilt he has for killing giants. Angerboda despite knowing she would be forgotten in the story still helped Atreus in his quest because she just genuinely wants to help him. Shall i continue?

    • @cooljool1

Thor's redemption arc falls flat and is forced because he's barely in the game and it doesn't work and he doesn't feely guilty about killing the giants and when he gets killed nobody arounds him seems to care. Freya's transformation in such a short time is unconvincing and Angerboda is just a filler character. Brok's death was needless and pointless. Can also add more significance to not only broks death, but his funeral and sindris feelings towards. We know brok died before and didn’t have all his soul bits, so when he died, poof, that’s it. No afterlife.
So the funeral given to brok was a typical Norse/Viking funeral, placed on a boat and drifted out. The boat is significant in that the Norse did this to allow “safe passage” to the afterlife. So us knowing this, means Sindri knows this. He’s giving his brother without a soul with no way to get to the afterlife a funeral that means absolutely nothing as there’s no afterlife for brok. The other dwarves may not know or understand this, but Sindri does. The funeral, in essence, was useless to sindri, provides no closure, no relief knowing his brother is safe in the afterlife, and further drives home the fact that Sindri will never again be with his brother, ever, eternally. And that part of broks finality lies squarely on himself, and he knows it. That’s why there’s no comfort in the funeral for Sindri.

The actual objective (and subjective) problems I can come up with is camera tends to screw you over in combat, NPCs give you hints almost immediately, a glitch where Atreus says the same line over and over, parts going on too long, a lot of times when the story is picking up pace it slows down for side characters depth, Sif not hating you quickly and acting like she didn’t just send Thor after Loki like a dog, and Thrud switches to your side really quickly during Ragnorok (I can see her not caring about her brothers because grandpa says and acts like they’re useless so it doesn’t matter to her and IG I can see why she doesn’t hate him from the get go) I still don’t think it completely ruins the game but def hurts or hinders it.

Just can’t agree Elden Ring has no depth. I was so hyped getting through the last boss fights in the game.
Also, there’s a pretty clear story of overthrowing an unjust hierarchal system that has existed long before the player character has come to the events of the game… very similar to the story of Kratos coming and overthrowing Odin and Asgard after the Norse world had existed for thousands of years and the initial war between the Giants and the Aesir had long been ended.
Got platinum on GOW 2018 so I’m sure I’ll love the newest sequel just as much but Elden Ring is a gaming experience I’ll be holding onto for a while since it feels like the game progressed alongside the decisions I was making while something like GOW is more just enjoying being along for the ride.

The later half of this video reminds me of my experience in Grad School. I am working on getting a Masters in English with a focus on creative writing and there was a point where I felt discouraged because my classmates and instructors had issues understanding what I was trying to say even if my family and close friends thought it was obvious. I literally felt like I had to spell it out as if I was presenting my work to kindergartners it was very discouraging and it made me feel that my work was inadequate. No one in my class thought what I was writing was bad, in fact they wanted to know more, its just they had issues grasping certain concepts relating to the story or the characters that I feel was obvious. Point being there are some people out there where things like plotlines, character arcs, hidden concepts that work to make the characters, story, or environment more complex, just flies over their head. This is something that I feel applies to all forms of fiction, be it literature, video games, comics/manga, movies/tv. Some people can be oblivious to things presented within a given medium, and that is where videos like this is important for shedding light on something that maybe misunderstood among the consumer.

The only bad thing I can say about this game is that on God Me God Of War Difficulty, this game is hard. The only part of the game I dislike is the angyrboda (don't know how to spell her name) part because it's very slow and I kept dying cuz of the enemies on Give Me God Of War which made it even longer. I stopped playing on that difficulty when Gorm was freed and I finished it with my cousin when he caught up. The game is an easy 9/10, it's better then 2018 God Of War easily. I just don't believe that there's a perfect game but if there is, this is the closest thing to me. The story was definitely a 10/10 tho

I really like that sort of detail at first I thought it was an oversight but that may have been an indicator that the Týr at the beginning was truly fake.

I love the game but there are some unanswered questions or ones that are either not meant to be asked/implied to be answered but not concretely stated. I like subtext but sometimes it can feel a bit like the story is in limbo. The other realm/mask wasn't explored enough if you ask me. The game sorta implies it's an afterlife but if a character directly calls attention to something like "why did Magni not turn when he died" I was hoping for a direct answer from Ragnarok. Yeah, maybe there is an afterlife for Aesir, but in this case I want definitive confirmation. Same with who summoned the world serpent in 2018. Was is Baldur? Odin? Modi? Was it Gjallahorn from Ragnarok reverberating throughout time? Again, this is directly acknowledged but never directly answered. What was Loki's connection to the mask? This one is not as bad since it's more a story device plot point, but still. I'd also have loved to have seen the mural explored further, especially in the game. That creepy smoke coming out of Kratos and seemingly feeding on Atreus, was that Kratos' soul? Some demonic entity? I don't know. Again, probably implied to he Kratos' soul but still.
I understand the desire to not repeat GOW II but I honestly was hoping for a scene involving time travel. Atreus being transported into the rift and seeing every possible timeline. Seeing how the prophecy would play out on screen. Again, that's more subjective but I felt a bit blueballed (I know that's the point). Ragnarok as the event played out felt a bit anticlimactic, and rushed. I also found at that point I got a bit lost in the sauce and the battle happened because it's the climax, I didn't feel the urgency of Odin waging war. Again, loved the game, but I do think there are flaws whether it be subjective or how everything comes out in the wash as far as set ups and payoffs. I really love Heroes season 1 and the finale isn't the greatest, but it doesn't tarnish the journey. It's not as bad as Mass Effect 3. It just went from a near masterpiece for the first 80% to a damn good/near excellent game for the last 20%.

I played both the original and the new god of war and loved them both but for different reasons; I loved the first god of war for the combat and story not much the exploration then again that game didn't have much exploration since they were linear, I loved the new one for the story and exploration but not much the combat as it seems slower but I know why it's slower because Kratos is calmer not as aggressive as he was in the first game but that doesn't mean he isn't the same Kratos from the first games and that's what makes me enjoy these games more.
Both games aren't better than each other they just connect perfectly together despite the retcons. I love both games equally and I'll continue loving both games equally. Kratos even pritiorized helping and saving the innocents in the way of Ragnarok. I do think the final fights between Thor and Odin and Ragnarok battle could've been longer and have some more phases and transitions and more challenging but in terms of the conclusion/outcome of the fights and ending it was brilliant, emotional, cathartic, and beautifully fulfilling Kratos', Atreus', and Freya's arcs.

He clearly picked the dumbest people to try and prove his biased point. The game is great but it could have been better…plenty of people admit that many thing that were built up in the last game were underwhelming in this game. It is very apparent that they rushed a 3 game story into 2. Thor and Odin actually DIDN’T live up to Mimir and everyone else’s stories. Ragnarok was built up in the last game and it was underwhelming. The best I can explain this is to compare this story to the last 2 seasons of game of thrones. The battle between Thor and jormungandr was boring and from a distance. clearly rushed. Actually you could say everything leading up to the “big” final battle was clearly rushed. Kratos and Atreus don’t unite the realms against Odin…all of that was done offscreen. The Valkyries pop up out of nowhere with Freya, FUCKING Mimir went to bring Hellheim into the end of the story. The fucking SIDE characters went and did shit that COULD easily make for some of the best things in the game and clearly where meant to be. The game IS rushed…like Brok said things aren’t coming together true. Fenrir did jack shit in the end, Ragnarok did jack shit, and there was no Hel. The mechanics are amazing, graphics, score, gameplay wise it was amazing but here people are acting like this story was 100% intended to be this way. Cory is old and clearly wanted to see more of his future ideas in games so he cut his Norse story short. Baldur’s fight as a fucking whole was on a bigger scale than the entire Ragnarok final siege of Asguard. The ending that has been hyped for every fucking marketing opportunity by this company “Ragnarok” this and that was a whimper compared to the Garm encounter, Nidhoggr, and that chefs kiss Baldur battle from last game. You can deny all you want but clearly the devs rushed the game and you dickriding the RUSHED story doesn’t change that. I was looking forward to this game…the sole reason why I got a PS5 at all and it doesn’t even beat the PERFECT story that was last game. Last game had weight and emotional impact…only time I felt anything in this game was when Atreus leaves in the end and I’m FUCKING STUCK a with FREYA’s BORING FUCKING DIALOGUE. How can you look at this game and go…yeah lmao this is totally how everyone thought it was going to go down. Odin kills Thor FINE…but he kills him IN 1 fucking shot? Nigga got stabbed in his wound 2 ducking times and took that like a champ but Odin lands one hit and kills the STRONGEST GOD IN NORSE MYTHOLOGY. For fucks sakes the DRAUPNIR RING is talked about in this fucking game….MORE THAN GUNGNIR?!!! The SPEAR THAT NEVER FUCKING MISSES?! Rushed, clearly lots of usable content thrown away to get through this phase of god of war as fast as possible. This game should be called God of War : size of ocean depth of puddle. I did every side quest and everything about them was great but the meaning they have to the narrative was minimal to non existent. Lmao go kill dragons for the ecosystem LMAOOO get the fuck OUT OF HERE. In the last game every fucking side quest is deep. In this one 90% of the side quest have zero value to the main story, or characters. Faye fought Thor and it meant jack shit to the fucking story…so why the FUCK was it even there…just because lmao…”she kept secrets” WE KNOW THIS NIGGA..Magni and Modi’s death were downplayed like a mother fucker…EVERYTHING THAT a was HEAVILY EMPHASIZED aim the last game meant jack shit. Odin dies, Thor dies, Kratos grows as a better person and Atreus goes on his own…that as an ending is great but how it’s done makes zero sense. Odin…ODIN TALKED LIKE A FUCKING 2022 business man. Nigga why are his mannerisms so fucking weird?! Game of thrones all over again… FUCK making sense LETS JUST agent wild 😜 UNEXPECTED. Fuck out of here lmao

The game isn’t bad, but absolutely disappointing. Newly introduced characters such as Freyr, Tyr, Thrud and even Odin are just paper thin, 1 dimensional characters, Ragnarok itself was only 30 minutes long in a 20 hour game, absolutely abysmal moments such as Iron Woods (and pretty much every other Atreus section), Freya forgiving Kratos in the first 3 hours of the game, the game being afraid of it being over the top (Kratos fought Baldur pretty much all across Midgard in their final battle with Jormungandrr and a reanimated dead Giant interfering in their battle, while Kratos fought Thor in the Pig Pin) and the absolute wasted potential of characters such as Fenrir, Angrboda and Odin
