      now, Daikun, to better express my opinion on the matter let me tell you the story of Girolamo Savonarola. A dominican monk and preacher in the 15th century Florence. He was very good with words, and managed to topple the Medici and obtain power in the city , but he was so strict and cruel in his pursuit of goodness and justice that the people that once believed in him rebelled and burned him at the stake. Moral of the story: if you are too preachy and unorderly in your pursuit of justice you won't do to society and yourself any good, that's why we have a justice system and not a popular tribunal.

    While I understand the reasoning behind the MeToo movement, the radicals are going too far in trying to force it into the entertainment industry in general. I'm for the general ideas of the MeToo but I believe there should also be protections against false accusations included in the argument. I've seen plenty of stories of people's life and reputations being ruined as result of proven false accusations even some people being driven to committing suicide.

    I walked into this expecting the worst. I'm happy to find you getting to the point and stating the context. VC4 Raj should be reprimanded, however in the situation it's difficult to do so. SAO A I haven't watched it but I heard about it. The details you provided show there was context and it was well done. Shield hero...false rape charges exist and in my opinion the accuser should recieve equal punishment because it ruins everything even if proven innocent. The metoo movement is well intentioned but like many thing it's corrupted. Sadly idiots neglect context are not open minded.

    I feel like everyone that has negative views of anime because of the sexuality should watch this. I feel like it would bring a lot more peace to the flame wars that are happening online because of such a topic. And I’ve mentioned this in the discord, but this reminds me of that one woman on twitter that made the #bandragonball hashtag over false accusations of the anime being sexist or whatever. Others were commenting on it with evidence from the anime that her accusations were false, stating that one of the male characters weaknesses were one of the woman characters. To be clear, I do support the metoo movement, but I definitely believe accusers should start their accusations with evidence of what they think is offensive, rather than going in blind and being thrown off the boat from the get-go. I support people who fight for what they believe in, just as long as they know who and/or what they’re up against, and as long as they have evidence that could make their voice heard. Otherwise, great video, I completely agree with the points that you made, and I hope more people see this

    Actually I would like to share a relevant story about rape accusations here, that being the story about Brian Banks.
    If you're into American football you're probably already familiar with him and his case, but to make an arduous story short he was a standout athlete in his High School until he was arrested in 2002 and charged with raping his classmate, he was around 18 at the time. No conclusive evidence was presented at court, but he was told that he could face 41 years in prison if he was deemed guilty and accepted a plea deal, which included five years in prison, five years on probation and registering as a sex offender. His classmate later sued the school district for being unsafe and received 1.5 million dollars in restitution. Banks was in prison for about five years and two months and spent a further five years on custody parole before his classmate was videotaped admitting that she made up everything. The case was opened and Banks' case was overturned in 2012. He would go on to play in the UFL and later signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. He received nothing for nearly having his entire life ruined and his classmate never faced any charges for the false accusation. This is the kind of thing that can happen purely on the basis of an accusation.

    Going to be honest, as soon as I saw the hashtag I got worried about where the direction of the video would go. And sure, I may be not for the movement as I've seen it being encouraged to ruin mens lives because someone wished to profit over the allegation.
    But thank you, OtakuDaiKun. I had a feeling you would have the feelings you did present in the video. from watching this video it brought a really public like sensitive issues which involves not only the anime community but also laws, politics, and morality into the frame. for myself this issue is complicated, however one thing i can agree with; is the censorship of anime content that gives the story more dynamic feel and realism to issues happening in real life events but as stated its only fiction which is bring this issues to light and provides awareness. having said that, the anime of shimoneta comes to mind were you have a world with kids being sexually unaware and not being able to deal with such experiences. in the end its like right is wrong while wrong is right.

    Great Video. I would still say that the critics concerning a too much free-way of using rape as a short plot in SAO is true. In reality, victims of rape will be more like Guts and Casca in Berserk or even Alucard in his backstory in Hellsing. Victims will spent decades if not their entire life dealing with this event, and let's not talk about how much this will change them. So from my point of view, SAO author deserves the critic for using rape so casually and pretend nothing happens right after a ''hero'' arrive or shrugging it off right after since it is a short story. In the end, it is poorly written and it shows a proper misconception or lack of information on the subject.

    I'm not sure I can support MeToo. It is well meaning enough, but that can be said of a lot of very terrible movements. What really matters is it doing significantly more good than harm, and I'm woefully unconvinced of such. I've seen too many accusations thrown out that do lots of damage to people yet are completely unsupported, or proven false later, but it is always the accusation that gets the press, not the truth. To be fair it has also gotten some long standing issues highlighted, but ultimately if it is doing harm than good, or even a large amount of good but a lot of harm as well, I'm not sure it is a good movement overall.

    politics and entertainment don't go hand to hand, mostly because politics go against the "immortality" of art. And as a victim of what metoo would see as a form of assault, just know that nobody cared, because I was a man, and men cannot be victims apparently. I wasn't even the first to be treated in such a disagreeable way, by the same person. I think that instead of leaving justice in the hands of some random internet movement, we should focus more on being better people and apply true, unfeeling justice, without trying to prove how good and moral we are, in contrast to many idealists I see online and in real life, who seem more to pursue justice for their own benefit, rather than for the good of society.

    A nuanced take. I like it...although i do think that in Japan, which has its own troubles with socially progressive awareness in regards to females, they could could take a lot of these issues to heart a lot more seriously than it seems like they do.
    Even the author of SAO said as much that he learned certain things recenty going overseas. I hope that it helps his work be more balanced towards those issues. I hope that doesnt make me a "blue haired SJW trying to take the animes away from fans", like i hear around.
    Valkyria 4 for instance, Raj doesn't make me laugh so much as make me cringe when he is supposed to be a character in a more realistic war scenario that begs for that seriousness, childhood friends or no. VC1 never had that kind of thing and it was better for it.
    I get that in terms of fan doujin and anime sexual fantasies are more and more prevalent these days in more mainstream works, but i hope that can be balanced out with more thoughtful topics on these issues beyond just fanservice or "pushing the limit for what's acceptable"

    I completely understand what you are getting at, but my problem is mostly with Quantity over Quality. When a majority of shows feature a topic (especially lazily or poorly) it builds the mindset that this is how the topic is. Rape is a common example and is a big one because of how poorly it is often handled. In context to Japanese anime, there is too much of it of varying quality (especially when it comes to porn) that it draws attention to this plot device. That's where the analyzation of the plot device comes in. I don't see too many people mention quantity over Quality in their argument. If this sounds all over the place, i understand. I am not the greatest at thinking out the entirety of an argument in one go.

There are multiple sexual harassment happened through out the franchise, but I never thought them to be a serious problem. Rather, I see those act as a way for them to deepen their relationship not as a fellow soldier but also a comrade that you can trust with your life without having gender or position to hinder them.

    So I admit the only one I knew about was the shield hero one. Frankly I support the movement but as of late if someone is claimed a sexist that seems to be it for many. Which annoys me since it turns out later the accuser is discovered to have lied but that person’s life is ruined. If the allegations are true punish the rapist for ruining the victim’s life. If they aren’t true punish the fake victim for ruining the accused’s life.

    I get the context behind the scenes in SAO, and love that you're taking a non bias stance on this whole topic, but it doesn't stop it from being an overused, edgy and lazy story telling device within the franchise. It ain't the first time SAO uses sexual assault and then just shrugs it off and ignores those things ever happened for the sake of having a ''dark and mature'' moment. It's lazy story telling, at least when it's done in SAO, but that's maybe because I still have memories of that happening to Asuna for no reason. Stuff like Goblin Slayer, Shield Hero and Berserk kind of set a tone and world where something like sexual assault doesn't feel forced or like it comes out of nowhere for the sake of being edgy. Rape can and will happen in those worlds, but they don't treat it likes it's a one off thing to shrug off when it's done and serves no purpose later. With SAO, it constantly feels like it's just there for one moment, like the writer is poking me in the eye saying ''LOOK HOW BAD THIS GUY IS, DON'T YOU JUST HATE HIM!? CAN'T WAIT TO SEE KIRITO MESS HIM UP, RIGHT!? Ok, now that that's done, let's go see Asuna or some other waifu bait do something else... What sexual assault? Did that happen? OH, WHO CARES! That's already done and over with, check this other shit out''. It's frustrating. Idk, I just don't think it's done well in SAO.

    • @OtakuDaiKun
      @OtakuDaiKun  6 років тому

      I don't think SAO just shrugs rape off. The fact that it comes up so often is proof of that. Would you prefer to have Asuna linger on the trauma of her experience longer? What would it take for you to find it less lazy?

    You know what it really piss me off? The lazy and unrealistic depictions of armed conflicts. A friend of mine was in the mexican army, not so much in the current "war on organized crime", just a few years before that. He was in a training exercise, a massive one, with artillery and columns of vehicles, his platoon had to take an enemy position, with mock enemies, just a bunch of woodplates and practice targets. The particular objective was to call a mortar attack on the enemy position and storm it while the enemy was disorganized, simple stuff, most of the time without casualties, the lieutenant was a greenhorn and was unsure of how to conduct the assault, and in the end he lost so much precious time that many soldiers mock died in the assault, according to the referee officers.
    In anime the protagonists just throw themselves head on toward the enemy, impervious to bullets and single handedly win battles.
    Fighting is a very nasty thing, and mindlessly fighting makes it worse, most of the time people die if they don't know what they're doing. Winning battles in modern times, even with overwhelming numbers and firepower, is a tortuous and time consuming matter, full of setbacks, unknowns and uncertainty, also the personnel and material equipment are limited. I've been studying the war on Syria, particularly the war on ISIS almost from the very beginning, and I believe is one of the best examples of why I'm saying, a textbook example on modern warfare, long time, effort consuming and limited operations. Sometimes even particularly effective units has to move from one place to another in support of new assaults, making them weary and reducing their combat effectiveness, in real war, regardless of how well trained and experienced soldiers are, they can die or be wounded, and then they have to be replaced with maybe equally trained but inexperienced soldiers.
    I also have a problem with the duration of service rotation of anime soldiers, I've seen examples of guys who have been fighting for years uninterrupted, without R&R or shore leave, and say they're fine that way, that rest will make them slow o make their senses less sharp. Most of the time that's not only physically and emotionally bad, but also illegal, soldiers have right to be periodically removed from the frontline, if not out of the theater completely, they must be evacuated if wounded, and be relieved of duty when their tour of service is over, that most of soldiers expect to the point of counting the days. They even have the right to reclaim their retained payments and accumulated interest once they have finished their rotation.
    I think it has more in common with the idea of being a soldier during the imperial era, to sacrifice oneself for the fatherland and the emperor, to being able to feel motivated even in the most uncomfortable conditions, hunger and sickness was considered secondary to fighting, and being brave and relentless in the face of imminent death had almost a mystical appeal to the public and soldiers.
    I know anime is fictional and protagonists have a plot armor that makes them impervious to attacks, and that rule of cool should be maintained at all costs, but I think that not an excuse to make battles look cheap and sincerely uninteresting, stakes are not taken seriously, risk is inexistent and everything is clear and ordained, instead of chaotic and dirty, death is a thing that happens to the lesser guys. And battles are mostly picket fights kind of like infinity war, with the armies coming from opposite sides of an open world. That's it, just standing in front of each other, no trenches, no pillboxes, no artillery support, sometimes even no maneuvering, like something from a peplum movie. No tactics, just a melee, daytime face to face battle.
    When I see something like that in a show or a movie, it not makes me feel tension or the possibility of the protagonists being defeated, it makes me laugh, I found it hilarious, like an uninspired cliche.

    "SJWs" don't exist. No one is saying media can't have dark themes as long as they are handled right. Please stop using "SJWs" as this group of people who are wrong and fit what you want them to. Also you cheery picked examples to fit what you think not looking at things weighed to find an answer. Also I haven't played VC4 but just because a game/show normalizes these behaviors doesn't mean it right, also you have to look outside the media and not just the in game lore. SAO aliczation's rape scene was horribly done, they introduced characters JUST to be raped and be rapists then are quickly moved out of the story. The problem with this story arc is rape is being used as a cheap shock again in SAO and handled that rape victims are weak and need guys to save them and solve everything. Even the creator of SAO said he's going to stop using that trope because he's learned and become a better writer so he even agrees. With shield hero there was very little of people actually being angry about it, it was fine and I could see it being concerning to some people but wasn't bad like the SAO example. Don't get caught in the anti-"SJW" echo charmer and making videos of things that don't really exist or if they do they are so small and blown up to seem like theres a huge group of people doing it. For shield hero there was only like 2 articles about it and if anything most people are more upset about the slavery and the trope of hero buys a slave and is a "good master" instead of fighting that system, though thats another discussion all together. And idk why you brought up Anita, most feminists don't agree with her extreme points on media and seemed you just wanted to find a way to discredit people but using someone extreme. I like your fate videos and I hope you take this as good criticism to learn and grow.

    • @OtakuDaiKun
      @OtakuDaiKun  6 років тому +4

      At this point I would say anyone who blames media for the way politics are going irl is an SJW. I'm saying these works of media do NOT normalize anything. They're stories with controlled circumstances that exist in their own universes. If someone becomes a rapist and claims it's because they grew up on works like SAO, they're full of crap. You can't blame the media for the actions of individuals who can't properly contextualize their fiction. As for the rape in SAO, we create characters for specific purposes all the time. In Pixar's "Up" the old man has a wife character who exists almost exclusively to love him and die to set up his character. It's a beautiful montage, and we don't need to know everything else about the wife to tell the story. Sure, the girls and rapists are only on screen for the duration of that arc, but it's not like we have to see them for just those moments. I read an article on shield hero that criticized the show for the false accusation. Even if it weren't the most popular article, it's still worth arguing its points in concept. I mention Anita because she was the first person I heard say media doesn't "exist in a vacuum". It's a concept that I feel gets caught in the hyper progressive echo chamber. Not existing in a vacuum basically IS normalization as it's being described.
