Honestly, I can never understand why people just get so triggered over something that has nothing to do with them. It's that very reason why they always are, and will be, the butt of the joke because they think that they're doing the world a favor, but it couldn't be that far from the truth.

If anything, ironically, they're being sexist towards women, because of their constant backwards false morality and "virtue signaling" and thinking they know what women want, when in fact, real feminists accept that men and women represent themselves and have their own lifestyles, and I'll gladly take a girl who wears revealing clothing, but is vulnerable enough to be relatable and is not just superficial eye candy. Instead of actually doing something productive, they just whine on Twitter, because of their own insecurities that they refuse to do anything about.

Actually Velvet's clothes kinda reflect her state of mind. The tattered state signifies her broken condition while the red and black colours allude to how she has become a violent daemon who only wants revenge against Artorius.
But it's not just her clothing that fits her character but that of the other characters in the game as well. Aside from the obvious main characters, I noticed a theme with the uniform of the Abbey high ups. The less the person values emotions, the less colors he has other than the standard white and gold. We see Artorius mostly lacking any other colour other than the white and gold while Teresa and Oscar have little more. Laphicet has more blue and a collar (can signify his enslavement) while Eleanor wears clothes that are mostly blue with little white. And finally with Shigure, his colors are a contrast as he merely fights for the Abbey because he feels like it and not because he is committed to its ideals.
Coming back to Velvet, I consider her to be one of the best designed female characters in fictional media. Not only does she possess traits that make her an empowering female character but she also has a decent amount of other likeable traits as well. On top of that, she is not devoid of human flaws (unlike many so called characters made for women empowerment who end up being glorified Mary Sue's or just women merely acting like men) like how she is so obsessed with her revenge that she does not care much about anything else, leading to situations like when Phi was forced to open a portal to the leylines or how Innominat almost made her sink into despair. Overall a good character who is also quite human.
And this in turn actually fits the themes of human morality in the story really well. While people criticise the slow starting part of the game, it actually serves the purpose of showing us how circumstances changed Velvet from a sweet top waifu material to someone akin to a genderbent Guts/Edmond Dantes. Then as the story progresses, we see her acting like a villain but still root for her because we know what she has been through. Then because of Phi, we do learn that her human side still remained within her and later Phi is able to help her. In the end, she kills Artorious not out of revenge motivated by pure hatred but because the Shepard had lost sight of his own self and ideals. I noticed that most of the "maxims" Artorius talks about don't exactly feel like maxims when you compare them with Immanuel Kant's philosophy (someone who Artorius seems to follow quite a bit as Kant considers actions driven by principles to be moral instead of those driven by emotions, which he considers irrational) as they have a definite condition/purpose behind them (such as controlling emotions IN ORDER TO control the tide of battle.). From what I read about the Maxim's Kant Spoke of, those maxims were supposed to be unconditional i.e general truth like do good. So we see that Arthur's maxims have conditions which contradicts Kant's definition.
Except one. Don't despair. The same one Velvet reminds Artorius as she stabs him. In the end Arthur actually became more of an act utilitarian in his wish to create a peaceful world by removing emotions. That's some really amazing writing right there. Makes me glad I got this game and made me more interested in the Tales series.
Hopefully we can see Velvet and Phi reunited in Crestoria. He deserves to be with her far more than Sieg deserves to be with Jeanne.

Hyperdimension Neptunia's character design is by a young female artist named Tsunako; She doesn't shy away from suggestive depictions either, even though thats not the series' focus at all. Honestly i believe its a bit of a culture thing, along with easily offended idiots of another culture of course.

    • @poethewondercat7851
      @poethewondercat7851 5 років тому +9

I'm sure someone would argue that Tsunako is a "victim" of the systemic misogyny in Japanese and anime culture, unable to make her own decisions, or at the very least is forced into designing as she does because it's popular and she wants work.
This is reductive and insensitive. When you ignore people's personal preference and free will, you diminish their individuality and importance, essentially bullying them into feeling shame for liking what they like. "Feminists" (I use quotes because they are not REAL feminists, but I lack a better term, and SJW is too broad and amorphous of a label) want to enact change by normalizing this shame to the point that everything that makes THEM uncomfortable is expunged.
Instead of just ignoring things they don't like and moving on, they see anything that doesn't fit into their purview as inextricable from whatever they deem wrong with the world, justifiably or not.
What I find really aggravating though is they are clucking their tongues at the "moral degradation" in media from a completely different culture. Western culture and Japanese culture share a lot of similarities, but there are quite a few social nuances that are completely ignored when painting with such broad strokes.

There's blatant sexualization that deserves criticism, and hell even some certain parts of Berseria's protagonist are worth a critic (although very small bits, the overall design works wonders with her character). But, nowadays it seems many of this kind of critic go after characters meant to be attractive just because they're attractive AND women.
How come they don't comment on Dante from Devil May Cry? In 3, he starts off shirtless and you can get that look as an alternate costume. He's always designed to be pretty as all hell (even in 5 when he's fairly old). He has charm, and it mixes well with his character. He's powerful, stylish, kinda of a goofy dick and, yes, sexy as all hell. And people acknowledge he's sexy. So many people are horny for Dante! The Berseria protagonist is a furious and brutal warrior with a ragged if somewhat sexy look. Dante is a much more blatantly teasing and arrogant character, that knows he's attractive and loves showing off.
So, how come she is worse?

I don't think internalized misoginy is a thing, not in the way modern people think of it at least. I think it's the same form of depression that takes hold of those who are constantly demeaned and mistreated for a long period of time, which applies not only to women, but to everyone subject to any form of mistreatment, as they will try to justify to themselves why they are being treated as they are, so it's not misoginy per se, but in my opinion a phenomenon that can affect everyone equally (supposing the right conditions are present). Nowadays, I think, it is more of a type of mental manipulation, you control others by telling them their beliefs and behavior are not their own, but the byproduct of an evil system, and thus they must change their worldview, otherwise they'd be but a cog in "the system" that must be destroyed.

    Funny story:
“High heels” as we call them today where originally designed to be worn by Nobles (mainly MEN) while riding on hose back. They where never meant to be worn as walking shoes by anyone, regardless of gender, even less so as dress shoes.
The where never originally designed to support a person’s weight. The long heels where used in the same way as a cowboy would use the spurs on their boots, its one of the reasons they’re so sharp.
Before you ask I am not into any kind of fashion. I actually got that info from an image and an accompanying short paragraph of text from my old history book from my 3rd year of secondary/high school. Even my History teacher knew that from when he was my age at the time.

Aren't internalized misoginy would be women who cannot put revealing clothes and be pushed down by men to think that they can't do what they want ? For a lot of centuries women couldn't wear revealing or fambloyant clothes without being labeled as prostitute, firstly by men (but also women who were pushing this shit).
When people would saying that a women cannot wear what they wants because they are not supposed to and have their roles in a kitchen and nursery. When they used to put them (and even today in some country) as a same level as a children who can't think for themself.
The first wave feminism was made for women to empowering themself and feel confident to feel sexy and wearing what they want or like. Plus there was women not just from european victorian period or middle ages who only wore those big dresses because of fads and style. Like even other women from vikings to other tribes or nationalities that had more revealing outfits. Even from greek and romans had more simple dresses that looked more like huge sheets wrapped that still gave the sensual look more revealing than victorian clothing. A "empowered by sexiness" character from time to time is fine by me. Fun, even. But when every combat-capable female in anime uses this trope, the appeal wears out its welcome and the trope becomes a cliche. There's a bazillion different ways to approach a character's visual design.... Approaching every female design with "but it's gotta be SEXY" is actually very limiting in the long run. I want to see a wide variety of visual design for females, so I get disappointed when the artist takes the shortcut of "let's just make her sexy".

Vivid Daydream I can understand that. If there's a demand for a certain character than that's perfectly valid. The issue then becomes what is and isn't considered sexy. It's a tad tricky when everyone has a different standard.

Alright, let's do a little thought experiment. If fictional characters don't have real-world agency, then are the writers responsible for the evil acts of patriarchy in a lot of intersectional literature? Let's take The Handmaid's Tale for an example: in that setting, the men dominate absolutely and oppress women routinely in their everyday lives. However, given that the men are fictional, they don't have agency in their actions: the only reason they're oppressing women is because the author wrote them that way. As a result, shouldn't we be decrying the author as an agent of the patriarchy? Wouldn't the author be perpetuating the very thing they supposedly hate simply by writing their men in such a manner? Shouldn't we be decrying the treatment of these fictional men, who have no choice but to harshly oppress women just to fulfill the sick fantasies of this writer?

My answer is no. I've never read The Mandmaid's Tale, but I still take a wild guess and say the book was telling its readers "Ladies, don't let this happen to you. Men, don't turn into these assholes." A cautionary tale is what I'm pretty much trying to say.

It is supposedly sexist to portray women in skimpy clothing because it somehow demeans the character, correct? This means that the viewer is not meant to be able to respect the female character because she is less covered up than considered normal. That attitude is in itself sexist because your respect for a person - female or otherwise - should not be contingent on how naked they are or are not. If you're getting in a tizzy because a woman is showing skin, that is reflective of your own sexism and not the sexism of the artist

I agree with you, however, simply using the artist as girl designing Valvet is too easy imo. Because the manga/anime//gaming world in Japan is mostly a boys’ club and women workers in general have to adhere to what their bosses want. Not saying that Valvet’s design was made to satisfy the patriarchy but it would be to easy to think that the design is official because the artist deems so. More often than not the artist must adhere to what the company wants. Case in point to Ushiwakamaru in Fate/Go. The artist wanted her to be more modest but Nasu wouldn’t use their art until more skin was revealed. All I’m saying is that there is more going on behind the scenes than we’d like to think it’s usually more complicated than it should be

DJ Insanity that’s definitely true! I even recognize sailor moon’s artist for being a woman mangaka in the late 80s along with Ranma 1/2’s artist. However most of the time the editors hold more power than the artist, also the editor is the mouthpiece for the company more often than not and a lot of times positions of power in Japan are put forth for men. Just for a small example of Japan as whole, the prime minister has been quoted on record saying women don’t even need higher education and it’s come out that some companies will outright not higher women. Looping back to the manga world, artists may be more diverse but the choice of design must first be approved to which most of the approvals usually come from men in higher positions of power. I’d say more but this is already long-winded. Japan does have a sting patriarchy

Her journey her struggles and her character development were all the things that bundled up into the reasons why I love her so much as a female lead and as a character. It just sounds really dumb what that person's post was talking about and speaking of God Eater a friend's friend just bought the second one and I asked my friend did his friend get to see best girl AKA Alissa yet and he said no. People just want to find reasons to criticize things without actually putting in any effort to analyze it in the first place and then pushing that negativity towards people who genuinely find enjoyment. At that point, it takes away any positive value that their opinion might have and just becomes destructive hatred. Its that kind of stuff that ruins fandoms for others.

Anime is widely known for being over the top, both in power and sex appeal (and more often than not simultaneously uses both). I'd call this a good thing; power fantasies and escapism are a wonderful balance to the limits of our world on a physical, mental, and social level. A sort of stress relief, if you will. And if it's not your thing, don't ruin it for the rest of us.
If I may be so bold, then to hell with double standards and power-hungry public-shaming liars. They only make these broad claims to stir up controversy and grab attention. Only in a fictional piece where misogyny is blatantly obvious AND is portrayed by the author as a good thing (where would someone find that?) would their arguments hold any weight. Even then, that is a VERY SPECIFIC circumstance and the argument should be focused accordingly.
Never assume anything, and never speak in broad strokes. Be specific, and educate yourself. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

Velvet doesn't care what she looks like, but she will care if you ogle her. And she will at you. Thing is that sex appeal is important for marketing, and sex appeal isn't exclusive to men. Anyone who says that women don't get aroused by sex appeal is lying. As many fandoms as I have been involved in, I have seen only a few that are as sapphic as the Fate series.

Female empowerment lies in the choice of the woman. If a woman finds empowerment and freedom in revealing clothing, good for her. If she finds it in more modest outfits, good for her. Same thing with choosing between being a career woman or a stay-at-home wife. There's societal forces pressuring people to fulfill roles, yes, but that's why we should celebrate the diversity of all kinds of people.
There's also a thing called reclamation in Leftist theory, where something that used to be oppressive is now being reclaimed by the group who suffered under it. A classic example is the N-word. Bold female sexuality falls under here too.

    • @torrik-8722
      @torrik-8722 4 роки тому +4

Yes, this is true, to real people. Not fictional characters.
Even if Velvet "chooses" to wear that stuff she was designed; and even if she was designed by the woman, she is not purely a female's design.
Something that rubbed me wrong on rebuttals of Bayonetta being a sexual object was the argument "she was designed by a woman."
That's not how designs work. People are paid to design concepts from directors who tell them what to make, than approves it. If the director says to design a sexy woman, that's what the designers do.
Designing in games is also collaborative. You have teams coming up with ideas, who are most likely men.
Then you have the programmers and animators that can sexualise the character with animations and camera angles.
Real women can make these choices. Characters are puppets that are made and dressed by people.

I don't really pay attention to stuff like this because it's becoming a "bigger issue" than it actually is in my opinion. I don't look at what you might be interested in, in general since it kept getting filled up with that stuff. Their fictional characters it shouldn't matter what they wearing because it's not real life so it doesn't matter if game and/or anime physics contradict real life physics because their not real. Sorry for ranting this just really annoys me.

I agree with most of the video, but there's a thing that make me nervous and that's the bikini armor, I can't believe that someone can use that things as armor and my suspension of disbelief just dissapear.

Mia Suarez That's one of those points where you have fun with something you know is ridiculous, unless they're like a god or something.

@@OtakuDaiKun Yeah. It works in comedy shows but I can't take seriously a story with bikini armor, if eveyone is using casual clothes then yeah it's anime and there will be sexy outfits but the armor thing is wath bothers me.

Mia Suarez There are some cases where I really like it. Saber Venus from Fate Extella is a good example since Nero inherits the power of a goddess and it embodies her exhibitionist personality.

What's mostly ironic is that if you mention a fictional character may like the outfit. SJWs will immediately say it's fiction and they don't get to choose. If I ever find myself in that argument, as you have, I will feel inclined to reply back, "then why are you so worried about how a fictional character is dressed? You just admitted to my statement they can't like something because they are fictional, so why are you saying they dislike it?" I know most SJWs try to say things to try and bring reality into it by talking about how a man will think women are supposed to dress that way and act a certain way. I find myself brushing most of it off because if someone thinks for a second that women are grope tools they are in for a shock when reality hits.
Even without anime and video games violence of any nature is going to happen, so I think how a fictional character is dressed is the least of my concerns. Who am I kidding, SJWs are finding things to blame for their actions or for someone else's actions.
