the heavy crossbow looks great but is absolutely miserable to farm since it only drops from that single cathedral knight. its a perfect middle-ground between the light crossbow and the arbalest, though, since it weighs 4.5
I don't know why, but I always seem to have incredible luck getting that one. I don't think I've ever had to attempt more than four times to get it. The Flamberge, however, more than makes up for it. I only ever get that drop maybe once per playthrough, if I sink a lot of time into farming for it.
First time i defeated nameless king was using lacerating bolts so that i knew it was possible just genuinly didn't thought that the deacons were due to their curse A run where nameless king might be easier then the deacons What a time to be alive
I did a ds3 bare fist only run and the deacons were a nightmare. Especially because there's also the two deacons that'll heal the main deacon when he gets low. Tbf I haven't beaten NK on that run yet so I can't tell which one is more difficult.
@@jade-chan9122 Thank you, though I don't know if I'll actually finish that run. I still have three bosses to beat, those being Gael, Friede and Nameless King. I started it before ER's release so I'm pretty rusty now and don't know if I want to spend the time to get into ds3 again. I know I could definitely beat Gael and it would probably be pretty fun but I always struggle a lot with Friede and NK is just annoying to fight multiple times because the first phase takes ages when you do so little damage and is really boring.
My first Nameless kill, I literally walked backwards at a mid-distance from him with an arbalest and heavy bolts. He doesn't dodge, and if you stay close enough he won't rush at you either. Honestly, he was one of the easier fights that run. Now, Phase 1 was kinda hellish though. Mostly because of the camera
Alluring skulls would have made Deacons far easier. The head Deacon is immune so you just chuck one and all the other Deacons move away from him, opening him up for easy shots. As well as the added bonus of them ignoring you for a few moments.

actually, deacons are always in the top 3 hardest bosses for low damage runs, not this run but worse runs like fist only, or fists only sl1 and crazy stuff like that
Yeah, it's like Gideon in ER. You can really tell how bad a boss is by fighting them with low damage and them being hard because the mechanics are just awful. For me deacons certainly tops the list of worst bosses of all time with Gideon up there as well.
@@theapexsurvivor9538 4 kings is kinda fun like that, also the damage can go VERY low and you still can kill them fast enough, not every dps check is bad
I actually made a character based on The Arbalest from Darkest Dungeon in DS3, and it's surprising how good it is. Even in PvP. The tackle skill hits shields as hard if not harder than a kick. The only issue is keeping a good stock of the interesting bolts. Which also means finishing Greirat's quest, of course.
I’ve really been enjoying the art you do for these videos buddy! All of your content is always really enjoyable. Thank you so much for all your hard hours.
i have a new challenge run idea for Vigil: The Longest Night. i discovered a while ago that you can make yourself effectively immune to poison with the right gear, and in chapter 2 of the game you can find a helmet that emits a poisonous cloud. sooo, can you beat the game with only poison?
Pro tip: in dark souls 3 an empty armor slot is negative armor if you're hit in that area. Try picking up the sword master's set, the face wrap from farron swamp, and some footwraps for an extra light armor set that still avoids that 30% extra damage taken
I’ve done this run before! Was my 3rd play through of Dark Souls 3 actually. It’s actually super fun once you realize how to cheese enemies with the crossbow’s main strength: instant ranged attacks.
I think I remember you saying you dont like to do challenges that have already been done, but remember that a lot of us maybe dont watch other challage runs by other people, and just love watching your vids. I love all your dark souls vids, please do more of these types of runs, even if they have been done by others.
I think you unveiled with the twin princes what I subconsciously learned playing these games to death... much of the time staying close to your enemy is actually better because positioning is easier. I was like... why would anyone run from the princes and remembered hey they have a giant flaming sword
Tbf, by the time you reach the giant, there is only one boss you have to fight to get access to all the white trees. I don't think more range or whatever it was the ring gave matters too much on crystal sage. So what I'm saying is. No, you are not forced to kill the giant, you are just a monster.
I hate what they did to the Flynn’s Ring in DS3. It’s effectiveness starts dropping with only 2 weight. And equipping the lightest weapon and 4 rings, you already hit that. Plus, DS3 has a secret mechanic that no other FromS game has. An armor SLOT has a flat defense that requires any piece of armor to activate. Whether it’s Havel’s or Master’s this flat defense is the same, before calculating the attributes of the armor itself. More simply, not having a piece of armor in every slot significantly drops your overall defense. You know how in all the other games, you could go shirtless and make up for it by wearing really bulky pants? That doesn’t work in DS3. Why this matters for the Flynn’s Ring. The Master set, the lightest, worst set in the game, weigh 4.1. Rags that are barely holding together. Thus, it is impossible to get the full effect of the Flynn’s Ring, without taking a massive debuff to your defense.
You can complete both onion knight and gray rats quests on the same play through. For future reference, you can exhaust the dialog for seigward when he's at the fire place and hit him once (in this case tackle him) and he'll be awake to save gray rat and and you can still find him in the dungeon after you beat pontif. Just make sure to do that before sending gray rat to pillage. Works every time.
Some great editing as always! Music choices were excellent as well, especially the AoE early on and the Crypt of the Necrodancer boss rush montage. Thanks for the series! I remember using the crossbow a bit in my first run of ds3, and just generally have had an appreciation for the often overlooked/underappreciated weapons of the series. Looking forward to whatever you make next!

@@georgewallman8886 I know but he bought it from greirat later in the game before finding the heavy crossbow. You can get the knight's crossbow in the high wall and use it for a while.

Adding this to my watchlist for later. I remember doing a personal crossbow challange run a few years back for roleplaying build reasons(had a vampire hunter lady that uses only crossbow in my setting). Im very curious to see your take on it. Didnt touch the DLCs with it cause there was no way I could do Freide and Gael without bruning out beforehand XD. (Im really glad that Elden Ring made pure crossbow builds easier, altho still fairly frustrating to set up)
A new idea for you, "Can You Beat Dark Souls 3 With Just Your Starting Gear". Melee weapons will have no issues but for magic builds you are limited by how much max damage you can do. Increasing your mana pool and upping your int/fth stat are thing you can do to increase your damage but ultimately there is limit. A concession to allow better spells may have to be made.
Not being able to equip rings would definitely hinder the Sorcerer and Pyromancer. You’d probably have to become a perfect dodging master, and have all your flasks be blue Gatorade. Because the lack of damage stacking would be brutal.
Lemon, the only content creator I watch the sponsored ads for because of his humor. Honestly debated the whole VPN stuff until I heard about people abusing them in games as a form of lag switching without worrying about getting caught or penalized. Anyway back to the video Crossbow run is hilarious. Can't wait to see how you summarized your dagger playthrough if you do ever do that. Lol.
My brother just recently finished a Crossbow only playthrough of Elden Ring and Jesus Christ the endgame bosses were awful to watch. I can't imagine playing it. So much health and so little damage. Not to mention actually Melania is a nightmare.
I'm unaware if you've actually said anything about this at some point but a DS2 Ladle run would be super fun to watch. Due to how early you can get it and the fact that most of the required bosses before you can get the Mundane infusion on it are able to be killed without attacking I think getting the Mundane Ladle shouldn't be too much trouble. I've been doing the run right now, and if you allow yourself to use non damaging spells you actually have a lot of options.
Excellent work, Lemon! Absolutely loved this series and might have inspired me to try it out myself seeing how fun bows in DS 1 was. Keep up the great work.
God DAMN it Lemon. You can't just give me flashbacks in the middle of your run by dropping Reach for the Summit into your playlist. It's just not fair!
If I may offer an opinion, I don't think the "montage of the final build killing bosses" works for your videos. I can't speak for others, but I watch your videos for your commentary, not to see the challenges themselves, so when all you have for 2-5 minutes is a montage of bosses it gets... a touch boring.
Tbf, he has nothing to commentate on when he's quite literally left to his devices up until gael where he gets his last new piece of potential equipment
@@MisterChf That's fair. I'm not saying I have a better solution, I'm just saying the montage is the least interesting part of the video. Guess it's better than just skipping straight to the final boss though.
Don't think we missed that Age of Empires music playing in the background. XD MAN I was playing Solasta while listening to this video, and as soon as that music came on I just froze, so many flash blacks and great memories.
This series reminds me of the bow only run i did a while back. Alluring skulls and the compound shortbow's dodge quickshot were so vital to the deacons
Seeing the twin princes in this vid reminded me of my non spell range only run. The strat I used was to never lock on and stand as far away as possible since he teleports less when you're unlocked and him crawling straight at you allows for easy headshots
Gotta give credit to The Backlogs for something I don't think anyone has ever mentioned before, he's actually pretty good at acting when playing his little 2d drawn guys
This...feels like the end of an era. I cannot wait to see what great things you do in the future and I cannot wait to be there for every step along the way.
Oh wow, I had no idea you could just run past the bridge beast guarding Irithyll. And it comes back later to ambush you when you're passing under the bridge! That's such a cool touch!
I knew the deacons would slow this run down greatly. I remember trying to do a mage build off rip and dying to the deacons 2nd faze over 30 times due to massive magic resist
Love your videos, even if i do watch them at +.25 speed and have no idea what your voice actually sounds like at this point. Keep up the good work, Lemonlogs!
Small tip for Greirat quest. Save the fight with old demon king for after you talk with onion in Irithyll. Trigger for his life or death is defeat of any boss so using old demon king can be easier than pontiff especially if you have an item in Profaned Capital that you want to use.
Pro tip for gyndir: Empty hand riposting him gives you a window to quickly line up a headshot AND it does extra damage. Just a thing for future runs. Also, dont try to parry him in his second phase. Only the axe is parry able and getting hit by that first is... a challenge
Although I don't mind that he gave him a crossbow at the start but technically he could have used the crystal lizard to roll into idux gundyr through the fog wall at the start

@@arellajardin8188 which is why i mentioned that getting better spells might have to happen, with restrictions of course.
Lol.
If you didn’t make any more of these challenge videos I would be... *Cross* a-*Bow*-t it!
I am so happy to have found this channel. Humor, Narration, Running Gags and Pacing is all on Point. Thank you for another piece of art :D
My brother just recently finished a Crossbow only playthrough of Elden Ring and Jesus Christ the endgame bosses were awful to watch. I can't imagine playing it. So much health and so little damage. Not to mention actually Melania is a nightmare.
You're one of the few people I usually watch the ads from. Largely cause of the weird existential horror bit at the end of this one. Well done Lemon.

Good Lord, Freida's entry with the music here was art!
26:06 The alarm clock in the background going off actually scared me cause I was home alone with my phone right in front of me lmao
Time traveller: *kicks rock*
The fronttrees instead of the backlogs: hey guys it's lime
I'm unaware if you've actually said anything about this at some point but a DS2 Ladle run would be super fun to watch. Due to how early you can get it and the fact that most of the required bosses before you can get the Mundane infusion on it are able to be killed without attacking I think getting the Mundane Ladle shouldn't be too much trouble. I've been doing the run right now, and if you allow yourself to use non damaging spells you actually have a lot of options.
Ah yes posted right as I sat on the toilet
Excellent work, Lemon!
Absolutely loved this series and might have inspired me to try it out myself seeing how fun bows in DS 1 was.
Keep up the great work.
obligatory "WHEN YOU GONNA DO GREATBOWS ONLY?! HMMMMMMM?!" comment
I know this video is a year old, but I keep coming back for that montage of you plowing through the endgame bosses. It's beautiful.
gun only bloodborne next?
@@NeroCMhonestly with Lemon’s editing i still find it fun to watch, i understand where you are coming from but dont agree
Fantastic music choice for the boss montage. Crypt of the necrodancer has an AMAZING soundtrack.
Loving the Age of Empires music in the background. An unexpected, but welcome addition.
The sync with the Necrodancer music was just *sick!*
Waking up to a backlogs video. What a great morning!
Don't think we missed that Age of Empires music playing in the background. XD MAN I was playing Solasta while listening to this video, and as soon as that music came on I just froze, so many flash blacks and great memories.
"Patience elemental", heh. I don't know why you put yourself through this stuff but I appreciate the results.
Gotta give credit to The Backlogs for something I don't think anyone has ever mentioned before, he's actually pretty good at acting when playing his little 2d drawn guys
hey Lemon! I wanna thank you man! because of you I got into Elden Ring and I just got Dark souls 3 and I love them both and I love the content!
Dude, beautiful nameless king fight, and timing of the best on the dragons death. Gave me chills! Love your videos dude keep it up!!!
This...feels like the end of an era. I cannot wait to see what great things you do in the future and I cannot wait to be there for every step along the way.
29:50 being able to see the arrows stuck to Friede while she's invisible is unintentionally the funniest thing
Oh wow, I had no idea you could just run past the bridge beast guarding Irithyll.
And it comes back later to ambush you when you're passing under the bridge! That's such a cool touch!
I've done a crossbow build a few years ago on ds3, its super fun, glad youre making this challenge
Waking up on a Saturday morning to watch lemon suffer is the best i can ask for my weekend.
Small tip for Greirat quest. Save the fight with old demon king for after you talk with onion in Irithyll. Trigger for his life or death is defeat of any boss so using old demon king can be easier than pontiff especially if you have an item in Profaned Capital that you want to use.
Impressive yhorm fight, I always love fighting him without storm ruler
Pro tip for gyndir: Empty hand riposting him gives you a window to quickly line up a headshot AND it does extra damage.
Just a thing for future runs.
Also, dont try to parry him in his second phase. Only the axe is parry able and getting hit by that first is... a challenge
Amazing video and challenge, as always! I love you videos (and the music montages), keep up the good work!
Evil Dead nod in the thumbnail is enough to make me appreciate this video already.
I've been binging these vods for the past 3 days. absolutely love the content!
I like how the music from crypt of the necrodancer was used in the big bossfight montage
Although I don't mind that he gave him a crossbow at the start but technically he could have used the crystal lizard to roll into idux gundyr through the fog wall at the start
Every time Lemon says "Movin' right along," I'm reminded of that one song from the first Muppet Movie.
When Necrodancer music kicks in XD...
Really nice choice of background music. Maybe its a thing to make Necrodancer Videos after some more Dark Souls Videos?
