I had my coat of many colors back in 1943/44 winter. mum had made it out of an old horse blanket and had to use parts of an skirt and all sorts of buttons. Man was I proud to wear that coat. It was big and warm and made up as a blanket at night for my little twin sisters, than only 2 years old. We lived in Holland than during wartime. Mum sure knew how to get us through hard times.
+Marco van leeuwen very sweet
i would love to have been there an known what it felt like to have a coat stitched from love like yours. i had an apron made from the skirt of a dress that my great grandmother made for my grandma when she was 8 or 9. i still have it tho it doesnt fit. dolly was and is one of my heros when it comes to music about love and life.
+Marco van leeuwen A wonderful childhood memory!
Thanks Teresa. Yes it sure is. Yes the war and its trying times made Jannie{75}, my wife for sixty years, and me{79} better people for sure.
+Marco van leeuwen Love your story. Thanks.
I cannot hear this song without bursting into tears. It is so touching.
Thelma Jean Danckert same with me.
Thelma Jean Hart-Danckert me too!!
It's her confidence. It's her REALNESS about her coat of many colors, and she's kind of like "fuck you" I was as rich as I could be....Dolly Parton is probably some kind of MBTI FP. I'm thinking IXFP or ENxFP.
Me to I think of my mothers love for her children
Same!
If you never cried listing to this masterpiece, then you don't have blood in your veins
I haven't cried to this song, but I do get chills when listening to it because of how soothing the words of the song are.
Love it
I find it astounding that she can play guitar so beautifully with nails shaped like eagles' talons. She so very talented, and I really love this song.
My mother was a single mother, every article of clothing we ever wore was from the thrift shop. I always thought I looked cute. I was bullied every day, but in my heart, I knew that I was beautiful and that it didn't matter that my clothes were worn. Every time I listen to this song I cry, happy and proud tears 💖🥰💖 Thank you, Mama, for teaching me what matters ❤❤❤
Hello dear
❤❤❤
I am so sorry you had to live through that difficult time. Times like that made me a much stronger man.
No condition is permanent
Saw the actual Coat of Many Colors at Dollywood in a glass case. She saved it all those years. The pieces are painfully narrow thin strips - what a labor of love!
poetcomic1 its not the real one she wore when she was making Dollywood she had her mama make a replica
...or desperation.
@@brsrkr7695 why can't it be both?
Amen
You went there too!?
We grew up poor, but the kids in the family never knew we were. We were rich in love. My mom sewed all of our clothes so this resonates deeply. One time my sister came home from school and said she had learned that we were low class. My mom told her no, we're poor, there's a difference. I am so lucky to have been born in this family, poor in money, but rich in everything else.
How I love this woman, and her music is so inspiring and builds a lot of character on people who loves life and are truthful to themselves.
Good song
Yes it is
And she's darn talented and funny. I hope she knows that Texas loves her💕

@@sharoncampbell796 Hello. How are you doing?
She's the only artists I know who can transition so smoothly from singing to talking in her songs. I don't know what it's called but I think it's pretty amazing. I love Dolly
❤
Jonny Cash can do it too, but yeah.
Aghogho Okrokoto in country music story telling used to be an essential part, and still in many other folk culture around the world.
My mother and me would clean the house with dolls Album playing my was given a week to live and just like that she was gone. Thinking but crying now and then may the 4th was her birthday and I played dolly Parton all day and night for my mummy THAT I love so very very muchly miss so hardly muchly was something we'd say to each others i love you so very very muchly. Thank you dolly Parton for your beautify Devine singing voice that will never die.xxx
Love you dolly kissxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Her voice has a rare purity, a clear and angelic expression which easily finds its way into the heartstrings. She's so sugary sweet that she's nearly impossible to not love!
rochestas She is a very humble person, and good person....Most people from the Appalachian mountains are salt of the Earth per say❤️
That's why her momma always called Dolly her little song bird!
I would suggest only one amendment to your beautiful statement: I'd strike the word "nearly." There may be people who don't love Dolly Parton, but I'm pretty sure they're just people who haven't heard her sing yet.
@@pennydavis2637 YES, they are! I grew up poor in Ky., my Mom played Guitar, Uncle played the banjo, Grandma, too! People with fiddles would stop by, I grew up with downhome music all my life! I still love it!
that's right. totally, totally accurate
Back through the years
I go wonderin' once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a story
From the Bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss
My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
So with patches on my britches
And holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
And oh, I couldn't understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told 'em of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told 'em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes
But they didn't understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
Made just for me
Thank you so much
You should put that to music
Hello dear
I think this has to be the most beautiful song ever written about children growing up poor.
I love how she honored and acknowledged her mom. Dolly Parton is one of the most talented artists the world has ever known.
Superb
One of the loveliest.
My late mother, born into hard circumstances in 1938, could not listen to this song without crying. She worshiped her late Mom and her Mom did just as Dolly's had. She also told her that they were NEVER POOR, they just didn't have any money. Words like that build character. Glad those two beautiful and gentle women are together again.
indeed. 110% right
I was born and raised in Africa. As a young boy growing up, this was the first time I realized there something called poor outside of Africa. And the song was my all-time best as a 10,11 yrs kid.
Nosa Omorogbe ' that's sad darlin boy'-
Oh, I was raised in church, but very poor, also! I didn't let it keep me down, found good in everything I could, was a teacher for over 30 years! Still friends with many of my old schoolchildren! I did alright!
awesome song imabout to homeless 804 9263643
We all have similar childhood stories expecially in Africa, however even in the developed world there are many still going through the same situation but they try to cover it.

I have a quilt of many colors, made from my Great Grandpa's old suits and various scraps of used fabrics they could no longer use. It's probably about 70 years old by now. But that collaboration of old rags and material is my most valuable possession. Every stitch of that quilt has stories and memories of the good times and the hard times of my family, many of them gone now. I don't know what each piece was used for before being retired to the quilt. But being able to touch it and think of the stories I've been told about their lives together makes me feel like those days live on, with me. So I really appreciate the meaning of this song.
+Auntie Didi What an incredibly beautiful thing to share. Thank you. That was just lovely.
ñ c
so true there's nothing like going in to bed on a cold night under the home made quilts as people made so much of what they had back then
Amazing thank you for sharing
That is a beautiful post. "One is only poor only if your choose to be." Clearly your family were rich in what matters MOST. Love.
I heard this song for the first time not long ago and - having grown up working-class with wonderful parents with great love and dignity - I burst into tears with the simple, touching lyrics.
Love this song. My grandma made clothes out of potato sacks and flower . For my mother and aunts . Remember reading the owner of one company’s. Put he’s product in pretty and colorful bags. As he heard he’s poorer customers made clothes out of the bag. So Hearing this songs brings a tear to my eyes. Mother’s Day is this weekend . Love you mom and thanks for the hard work . You did to raise me and brother right.
This was common practice for them to use at least decent patterns on feed bags/flour/potato/grain etc during the dust bowl AND the Great Depression. Why does this country forget about the dust bowl!? My grandmother actually had saved two dresses made out of those sacks. When she passes we donated them to the history museum in Indy

Went to school with these. kids in the beginning I felt pity then I just wantedt to help them so began my career in Special Ed and Im still helping some 50 years later. I have been blessed to do what I love!!!
She's so beautiful and her voice is beautiful as well, nowadays you don't hear too many singers with actual talent and ones who have meaningful lyrics.
Dolly sings from the heart, that's why. Nobody today does that.
YAA😀😀😀😀🙃🙃🙃🙃
Sushifoo
Every generation has singers that sing from the heart. There might be less of that now, but it still exists.
Sushifoo No you are wrong, you are just lazy and don't research music.
Dolly is a living doll. She literally looks like a porcelain doll in this video. But there's so much more to her. Just an amazing woman.
Hello dear
As a child who left by his mom on 7th, this song makes me burst in tears every time I heard this.
I have the book, and I'm here bc I just found out it's also a song. As a kid who was abandoned by her mother, the lyrics hit me every time. Having a baby girl myself, I strive to be everything I always wanted from a mother. My grandmother raised me for a few years, and she used to sew clothes for me by hand. And I know what it is to be ridiculed because of what you wore as a child. So many lessons from this fantastic song/book that I want to share with my children. Thank you, Dolly, for sharing with me and my family the lessons that your mother taught you.
Dolly is such a special person! She grew up so poor! Not ashamed of it! She has done so very much! She is such a good person! I myself grew up poor, music was my life! Everyone came with all there instruments and made my life full of music!
Hi Rhonda hope you're okay?
Dolly is the consummate professional, but you can see by her side glances that this song is deeply personal and affects her very much.
Hello how are you doing?😊
This makes me cry. The lyrics and her voice are beyond beautiful.
Wow its just Dolly by herself and her guitar.. singing in tune and playing an instrument without computers.. Dont see that today. I think she is remarkable and talented

Hello 👋 how are you doing?
welling
“Dolly Parton: Here I am” brought me here. That said, my mom back home made blankets from little rags she did not want to discard and throw away. I remember my brother made fun at by a little school friend asking if we were poor (we were actually middle class). This song just made me cry... mom is the most caring and loving person on Earth. I did not know Dolly’s music, but this documentary made me a fan.
This was one of my mamas favorite songs. She always cried when she heard it because it reminded her so much of her mother.
So today I’ll share it on my profile in memory of my mama that I lost on Friday January 28th 2022. 🙏💕
Hello dear
Metaphor for much more than just a coat… for any handicaps in life. What a brilliant song this is, and performed so well by the best person to do it. Magic
I went to elementary school with a little girl who reminds me very much of the character in this song. Although it was the early 1960s, my classmate's family still lived in the old traditional Appalachian way & they were very poor. They didn't have TV or radio, but they did have a guitar & a banjo & they knew all the old songs that originated in the Scottish/English borderlands. Patty Littleton was my friends name & Patty would sing those old songs in a hauntingly pure voice that would raise the hair on the back of your neck. Patty's family moved away when we were in the sixth grade & I never saw her again, but I will never forget that beautiful child & I will always wonder what became of her.
I am now 68 years old & this all happened more than a half century ago. I loved that girl, but I was too young & bashful to tell her so. Here's to you, Patty. I still love you.
The Character, is her, Dolly Parton!
When I was about 5 or 6 I had a digital encyclopedia and my favourite section was the music section that would explain different genres. This song was listed under country and i fell in love with the little snippet they had. I only remembered how much I loved this song recently. I'm 23 now. Thank you Dolly for making such a special song.
This song touches me, I remember being bullied by the clothes I had when I was a kid. Hearing this song made me appreciate everything my mom gave me when I was a kid and now I hope I’ll make her proud and repay her for the love she gave me.
Right there with you. I was bullied as a child also!
My Mum kept on smiling even when she should have cried. God bless all kind and Loving Mothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dolly’s beautiful voice pulls the strings of many feelings.Such a beautiful transition of singing to storytelling, with a southern bluegrass fingerpicking roll! Simply Brilliant Simply Dolly
I have found a lot of BTS fans looking up Dolly Parton due to her recent Twitter post, so I am here to greet y’all 😊 it makes me happy to see so many people coming to appreciate her music!
My nan passed away a couple of weeks ago and at her funeral this song was played.
She used to make myself and all my siblings clothes and toys. She always made sure everyone else was taken care of before herself. I wish I could just hug her one more time. Listening to this precious song makes me feel as if she is right here with me ❤️
That voice is unreal. As is Dolly's timeless beauty. She is otherworldly.
So pure, so simple, and one of the most beautiful songs ever written. - Everett
This song is one of the most beautiful songs in the world. It is full of humanity feelings, beside the great and the best Parton voice.truly It makes me crying when I lesten to it.

Hey 👋 how are you doing?
One of my favorite songs by Dolly Parton. "Coat of Many Colors", is a tribute to her Mom, and might be in recognition of Moms everywhere on Mother's Day.
Frederick Coots I came across an article last week on the possible movie of Dolly, this song and her life.
She rocked that with fake nails! Dolly is a badass!!!
+jim smith gee no kidding...
+Andres Herrera
She told alone" The people don`t know how much expensive is it, to have a cheap look!"
Dolly is great
Yes, I agree! I was amazed at her guitar technique - how was she able to press down on the frets with those nails?? What a gorgeous singing voice Dolly still has! And what a great song writer! She's amazing!
+jim smith she can fake all the hair she wants cuz she's a badass. So what if she bleached her hair.
Sorry, I don't buy it. All these tv performances were pre-recorded and lip-synced back then anyway.
Many tears in my eyes... I think of my grandmother sewing my clothes. We were poor but I didn't know anything about that stuff. Grandma could make anything. I miss her.. Here's to you grandma, I hope I can see you again!
Dolly came from such a poor background like so many of us! I was not talented enough to sing, but Dolly was! I grew up poor, but i have done alright! I never felt poor either! I was fed , clothed, and had a good life growing up!

Dolly Parton is the single best country song writer, and guitarist ever.

My grandma passed away in August of 2021 and this played at her funeral. This brings back memories. She passed away a month before I turned 18. I miss you nana 😪😪
Hello how are you doing??
What? A song with meaningful lyrics and a moral to it? What sorcery is this!?
Hahahahaha. You stupid!!
It's called Country Music :) Even the new county stuff hits this mark more often than it misses.
I don't even pay attention to the "new stuff" anymore. Classless acts like Luke Bryan and Taylor Swift has turned the genre of Country Music into a joke.
I'm not a big fan of Luke and Taylor, but you're statement is a little too generic. Taylor has Mean and that song is very meaningful. I also love Safe and Sound from The Hunger Games.
Not as generic as the two buffoons I previously mentioned. They're the poster children for what modern "Country" has become, if you can even call it Country.
This song should be played to the many children in our society today to make them understand that being rich equates to so much more than $$$$
So true. 💕
hello Liz, you have a good heart . I guess you must be a great woman with a very great sense of humor. I would like to get in touch with you 💓

Wow. I can't believe that I'm crying just because of a song! There is indeed life in this song. Just, wow. This single song has more musicality than the rest of the so-called "singers" nowadays.

one of her greatest songs ever, and so emotional. That's Dolly, ever so humble and down to earth in her music.
This song really touched my heart. We were very poor growing up. I was born in the 70's. My Mom embroidered a print on a pillow case, with flowers and my name on it, and it was my only present I received for Christmas that year. I had an old beat up coat my Mom made. She made all my clothes on her sewing machine. I was as proud as I could be, but the kids made fun of me. God blessed us tho. Dolly Pardon is very wealthy now. I have what I need. Our Mothers had the Bible that they read regularly. My Mom also read the Bible to me and took me to Christian Church regularly. I can really relate to this song. Love is what counts!
Best wishes from germany. My old mama give a book from dolly my kids today with picture and the text from this song. We know what happen witout money. We all have tears in our eyes. Sorry for my bad english.
