One of my best friends used to be a master tech for a local Toyota dealer (spitzer in Monroeville PA). When Toyota came out with the composite inner bed, the dealer had a section of bed floor that customers could smack with a supplied ball peen hammer. Printed on the composite was "unbustabelievable". I tried it & I must say that is some tough material.
I say the best feature that I barely found out about my Tacoma is the bed notches. You can cut out planks of wood and place them in those notches creating a flat/ raised bed with storage underneath. Great for camping or any outdoor.
Good video. Especially loved the last one with the 10 mm socket lol! I agree that is the first socked I grab on every mod I do. Interesting about the paint on the rocker panels that I did not know.
Awesome video as usual, ya the gas cap bend on the cord is so it doesn’t twist on you and yes from day one I use it for hanging mine all so. Keep the great videos Rob.
My brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 Extra-cab came with that special lower body, under the paint protection from the factory back way then as well. It is to help protect the metal body from road grime/rocks/road salt and debris thrown up by the tires.
Well, if there is going to be any socket missing from your set it will always be the 10mm. This is a well known phenomenon so it's a good idea to buy a dozen at a time, lol. Glad to hear about the pre-tapped holes for the steps, as I kinda struggle getting in and out of my new 2022 I just got.
Great Vid. Hey Rob, you have a lot of subs. Now that many are isolated and at home due to the virus, I look forward to your contents. But, be safe Big Guy.
my 2003 tacoma has a thing to screw the first thread or so of the cap into on the inside of the gas cap door, Toyota Genuine Part with vehicle. Original cap and plastic string still there, only one click is all I've ever tightened to into the fill. never failed any emissions because of the cap as many do.
Great vid Rob. I grabbed me some of those grab handles on your recommendation. FYI, you overlooked the pen holder in the underside of the centre console lid 🙃
Great tips, just bought my second Tacoma 2021, (gave my 2013 to my son in law), I thought the last tip was that you got a puppy in the bed with your 2018.
1:43 I replaced the original cap for the lock key one. 5:20 not sure if plasti dip will work without removing it, I need to cover the paint and try it out. Thanks Rob.
Front bed rail bolt holes are still there. I got one from a 2nd gen in a junk yard and the bolts are even on the bed. Just remove them and bolt the rail on.
My father and I had an autobody repair shop back in the mid 70s and some of the Ford products had a rubberized coating on the lower portion of the doors and quarter panels. I used to buy it directly from Ford and it was applied with a special spray gun. The texture of the product was similar to what you are seeing on the Tacoma. It wasn't too expensive and a lot of my customers asked me to apply it to their vehicles when getting an all over paint job.
Your lucky cause your tailgate has a key lock and the 1st and 2nd generation Tacomas do not , from what I have heard. But I added a tailgate hinge lock too , for extra security. Tacoma tailgates are a hot item in Hawaii !!
The paint on the bottom of the doors is referred to as 'orange peel', since it resembles... Exactly that, the skin of an orange. However, it's... Really not 'unique' to the Taco, I've owned 8 Subarus, and 6 of them had the exact same feature on the bottom of the doors, and along the rear quarter panels. I also find the 10mm to be ironic in three ways: 1) The first thing I ever did on my Taco required a 12mm and 14mm box wrenches, not 10mm sockets, 1) The second thing I ever did was to rotate the tires, which required a 21mm impact socket, and 3) I have a complete craftsman socket set, except I lost the 10mm. So, I have like 7 other one-off 10mm sockets, so as I lose and find them, I at least have a few in my tool box in easy reach.
Gonna disagree about the 10mm. I just did a steering rack, and the only time I used a 10 was when i unbolted my steering line bracket. Same with the brake lines, almost all of them are 12mm..so idk about that brotha
Do yourself a favor and get a bed mat. It protects the bottom of your bed but more importantly it keeps stuff from sliding around like it does without the mat.
Paint... I would be interested to hear what the Toyota official word on it is. My 4runner doesn't have it, the paint is as smooth as silk top to bottom. But, as I am looking at a new truck and I go to 5 or 6 dealers.... I do see the wavy/bumpy paint in the lower quads. I ask the sales people but they don't even know what time it is.
It's chip protection. My Jeep Grand Cherokee had it in the 90s. The 4RUNNER is an older design so Toyota might not have changed that on it. My 2018 4RUNNER does not have it.
I suppose this is already known by most Gen 3 Tacoma owners, the Gen2 bed headrail bolts right into the Gen 3. Undo the 5 Torx screws, the holes line up perfectly! (You will have to buy two end caps ...I think $4.00. I like having the headrail to ease transporting my bikepacking rig. So when I traded in my 2016, I took my cleats, headrail and bed mat (which incidentally I like as it prevents items in bed from slipping around....and protects the bed as well.). part number for the Gen 2 Bed head rail: PT278-35100-BH. (Shop around....I bought mine for $44.00 18 months ago). Short bed rubber Bed mat: PT580-35050-SB (LB for long bed). I bought mine at the dealer a year ago....with my military discount I paid $80.00 ....but YMMV. End caps part number: 66314-04010. Just thought all would like to know. Again, a Great video, Rob!
Hi.. I have a 2017 TRD 4x4 Off Road and it did not come with a front bed rail either. :-( I believe there is an after market part for it, but again that will be more $$$..
Rob is it me or do you make videos like way in advance? Didn't you put the front slider rail on your Tacoma a week or so ago? Do I watch your videos too closely to notice the discontinuity in timing of your videos. Like in the last few videos you install the Meso custom black turn signals (which are quite nice) and then mention it in an later video as an upcoming mod like in the future. Not complaining or being critical as I do enjoy your videos. As always👍
Lol!! At most I may be 5-6 videos ahead (in case something happens and I have to miss a day). I must admit I do occasionally get out of sync!! I appreciate that you watch closely enough to notice! Thanks👍
It’s a full time job (and then some) to put vids out full time. Mostly editing and keeping up with all of the other social media sites!! There’s a bunch of stuff in the Amazon store. Things I use on the channel and such👍
Not sure if I'm sorry, i bought my 2016 n found out later my keys did not fit my tailgate, the camera was also placed below the bed. The dealership said they would call the previous owner to ask if they had the key, which was bs. But do I continue to put the pressure on them or just replace the lock, I bed if I discovered this issue b4 I bought the truck they would of fixed it for me 😆 🤣
Where did you learn your photoshop skills to pull off making us believe that you have two 10mm sockets last longer than 2 minutes in real time? enjoyed the video
2019 double cab, 6’ bed, V6 SR5. I’m trading in a 2013 F-150 supercrew 4x4 that just spent 11 weeks at the dealership with $5000 of repairs (covered under an extended warranty fortunately). It only has 68,500 miles...
RobMotive , got the truck this evening - it was a very easy purchase. I’m in Dallas, the price was $30,335 for the Tacoma described above. Seemed like a decent price.
Now the tailgate does indeed have a lock in it so are you saying that it can still be stolen when it is locked ??because there is a key in side the key fob to lock it
I just acquired my 1st Toyota tacoma 4x4 and I'm loving it . Coming over from the Jeeplife thing .
Congrats👍👍

They say it’s tougher than steel! From my experience with it, I’d agree👍

Good video. Especially loved the last one with the 10 mm socket lol! I agree that is the first socked I grab on every mod I do. Interesting about the paint on the rocker panels that I did not know.
Thanks Ryan! They should provide a gold 10mm socket when you buy a Tacoma!!!😁
Awesome video as usual, ya the gas cap bend on the cord is so it doesn’t twist on you and yes from day one I use it for hanging mine all so. Keep the great videos Rob.
Thanks Randy! 👍
Thank you for all this tips, I was worry about the paint on the side of my Tacoma.
That's a good tip about the 10mm socket, thanks! I'm a minimalist, so I might just keep a 10mm Gear Wrench in with my jack tools for emergencies.
I’d keep a small set. The 10mm socket is the holy grail...but there are a few others as well 👍
Thanks for the tips about the 10mm sockets I'll keep it in mind 🤗
Have 2018 Tacoma 6 love it seems like every other month find out something new about it on highway get about 22 mpg
Good job. Btw keep ur tailgate locked they can't steal it :)
My brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 Extra-cab came with that special lower body, under the paint protection from the factory back way then as well. It is to help protect the metal body from road grime/rocks/road salt and debris thrown up by the tires.
I really enjoy your videos. I watched one and then I was hooked. You have a true talent for making things very interesting. Thanks my friend.
Very kind of you Shane! Thanks 👍

I love my 2002 Tacoma!! 144,008 miles.
I love your vids man. Thanks for all the hard work!
Thanks Lamont. Appreciate that👍
Thank goodness for that pint it really helps cut down on rock chips.
Yup..I agree! Kind of disturbing when you first see it if you were unaware that how it supposed to be there though!!
Love my Tacoma!
Great vid Rob. I grabbed me some of those grab handles on your recommendation. FYI, you overlooked the pen holder in the underside of the centre console lid 🙃
Thanks👍
I put my truck on 4H when i doing backing and there is big sound like cracking, what is that sounds? Thank you
No idea. First I’ve heard of this🤔
Great tips, just bought my second Tacoma 2021, (gave my 2013 to my son in law), I thought the last tip was that you got a puppy in the bed with your 2018.
Lol! No free puppies 😁
1:43 I replaced the original cap for the lock key one. 5:20 not sure if plasti dip will work without removing it, I need to cover the paint and try it out. Thanks Rob.
I’d go with an overlay. Pretty cheap and they look great.👍
Love the 10mm socket trick, I know what I'm adding to my truck kit.
It’s the holy grail of Tacoma Tools!!👍
Don’t forget to disconnect backup camera when removing tailgate.
Absolutely! 👍👍
Front bed rail bolt holes are still there. I got one from a 2nd gen in a junk yard and the bolts are even on the bed. Just remove them and bolt the rail on.
My 2021 Taco TRD Sport.., does not have the large cubby panel. They left it out again.
Nope…Been gone for a while😑

Seems to make sense for chip protection 👍
Nice 👍🏻 any vids or mods on truck with lifting
Just at the shop👍

Tacoma tailgates are a hot item in Hawaii !!
Apparently I live in the #1 state fir tailgate theft!!!! Glad mine locks with the fob 👍
My 2nd Gen 2012 TRD has a locking tailgate.
Electronic🤔
My 2021 Tacoma has a lock!

It’s funny how prone they become to loss when they are so important! I hear this all the time😬
I did the same thing on mine I was
Like sweet it came with a bed liner lol
Then I realized it was a composite bed.
Lol!! Too funny! I was a bit surprised. They are tough as nails though👍
Gas servicing door inner Catch clasp (prongs). Drape cable over it and life is good.
Pretty handy👍
The tailgate has a lock on the handle by the camera. The same key for the door and ignition. Just lock it
Always the best way (Unless you forget....)
Gonna disagree about the 10mm. I just did a steering rack, and the only time I used a 10 was when i unbolted my steering line bracket. Same with the brake lines, almost all of them are 12mm..so idk about that brotha
I have a 2015 z71 and it has what looks like a color match line x on the boys panel. Very similar to the Taco
I think a lot of the manufacturers do similar things there due to the potential for rock chips🤔
Do yourself a favor and get a bed mat. It protects the bottom of your bed but more importantly it keeps stuff from sliding around like it does without the mat.
Stay tuned......🤔
..great video...gas cap clasp I did not know....
Thanks! It’s the simple things👍
@@RobMotive yup!!!
What size socket do you use to tighten the bed on the Tacoma
It takes a torx bit. I don’t recall the size🤔
Thanks for video
Thanks for watching 👍

Wanna know how easy it is to take a Tacoma tailgate off? I once took it off by accident as a kid😎
Have a look at this video. ua-cam.com/video/5z-KbJ500X0/v-deo.html
And that you can look your tale gate with your key, no body points that out!!!!!
The 10mm bolt is the king of all Japanese cars. Not just Toyota, but also Subaru and Honda.
I believe it👍

Hey Rob, Did you know the bed has slots to lay 2x4' s across and you can add a plywood panel on top to create a two level bed?
Yup, I did know that. Pretty versatile 👍
@@RobMotive Cool brother! Yea i am excited to give that whirl some day, Thanks for your vids.

Hi.. I have a 2017 TRD 4x4 Off Road and it did not come with a front bed rail either. :-( I believe there is an after market part for it, but again that will be more $$$..
Nope. For some reason they’ve deleted it!! Not a huge deal for me...I don’t recall ever needing it🤔
Great stuff
Nice color!
Thanks👍
@@RobMotive I wanted that color too but my gf was against it so my back up was Carverly Blue
Nothing wrong with that! Calvary blue is awesome too👍👍
As always, good info!

Why didn't you mention the Tailgate MOD clamp on the right side? It works for me.
Good option for piece of mind for sure👍
Tailgate,,how about the camera cable?
Liked the Vid, Thank you
Thanks for watching 👍
Master lock makes a tailgate lock for around $15.00.
Yup. There are a few options out there. I prefer my cheapo method👍
I have a 2019 Tacoma I still have the lil cubby but its on the passenger side. Also how did u add the power outlet?:
Mine came with the outlet. Surprised yours didn’t?
Guess I had to buy a more upgraded version. Lol been trying to find a vid on how to diy adding one.
That’s a drag!! I’ve seen vids about that out there. Should be able to find them on the Tube I think👍
Sport ,Offroad ,or Pro comes with the outlets
@@Troystoy ok cool thanks.
I am looking for a tailgate for a 2018 Tacoma! Help
Check out sparksparts.com. You can use discount code RobMotive for 5% off too👍
I need to know how to tighten the bed bolts, I can’t see all the nuts below the bed.
Just a fyi, I took my cleats out of my truck bed, Just so that nobody takes them when I'm not using g them.
Thought about that. I have heard of them being stolen!
