you can go past 12,000 lbs on the steer as long as your tires are rated for it. Most states have a max weight higher than 12,000 on steers (typically between 16,000 and 20,000) but most companies teach that the max weight of steers are 12,000 lbs because after the max legal weight of 34,000 lbs on drives and trailer axle groups the max out of 80,000 lbs is 12,000 lbs for the steers. If your total weight is under 80,000 and both your axle groups are less than 34,000 each you can run your steers to either what your tires are rated for, or what the max legal steer weight is where you are going.

Hey Alex, and fellow truckers. I've been out of cdl school for over 3 years now, and I just wanted to say there's an easier way to move that fifth wheel. You don't have to keep cranking it until it unlocks. First part you did right, put the legs down, and keep cranking until you start to hear air out of your suspension. BUT, when you go back inside your truck to unlock your fifth wheel, drop your truck's air suspension also. Now there should be a gap between your fifth wheel and your trailer, and the big part of the kingpin should hold the fifth wheel somewhat in the air. saves a whole lot of time and a whole lot of cranking.
