Most people say French is predictable because everyone expects them to do a long feudal with knights and archers on a single TC. But in some match ups like French/Abbasids, French/Ottomans or French/Byzantines you are most of the time better off if you avoid overinvesting in knights, because these civs have both strong anti-cavalry bonuses (limitanei + camels for Byz) and better archer balls (longbowmen or javelin throwers for Byz). So either you try to out-eco your opponent with trade or a 2nd TC or you try to get a fast castle while your few knights delay your opponent by baiting him into building defense or training feudal units.

That's a very good point, I didn't think of it that way. I've not played French a huge amount and that's one of the main reasons I struggle because I haven't seen the different playstyles and moves enough to figure it all out. Thanks for the tips, I will keep them in mind next time 👍🏻

When you see the French only throwing out a couple of horses you can bet they are going for a fast castle and likely trying to grab the relics.

Yeah, I need to get better at noticing what and how many units they are throwing at me and scouting them constantly to get an idea of what to do. The more I play them, the more I feel like I'm figuring it out. Just a matter of time 👍🏻

Considering most people say French is weak it’s always a hard match up. GG

It's one of my hardest match ups, mainly because I haven't played against them much, but their knights are really strong

I have three tips for you here, judge fights before engaging, you lost possibly 3 armies by taking bad fights which I was grinding my teeth over even before you engaged because I knew you would lose those fights.
If french is not pushing, it is bad for them, your civ can trample them in late game with superior eco, so if they age fast casting, let them, go 2 TC if you need and turtle hard. Then stone wall and push with unlimited superior army in late game.
Army composition was wrong. He was going light and heavy cavs, so you need mass spears + mass crossbow and one mangonel to deal with whatever he had. If you can make 3 horsemen and keep him focused on his side of the map, you'll buy yourself enough time to survive.
Also I see that you are in my friend list in AOE. LOL. Wanna practice with me? Might be good content for both of us. I can help you practice turtle.

You are completely right on all of these. I still haven't played a huge number of games and struggle to identify good and bad fights, but the more I play the more I am getting the hang of it. Just not in this one lol
I am really not a fan of late game, that's why I try to end it in castle if I can. I find imp harder and the slow keep and stone wall creep with slow siege pushes drain my will to live XD
I tried to harrass with some horsemen that I haven't done before and I think it would work if I had better control over them and didn't lose them so easily. And you are right about the composition. Mass spears, crossbows and camels for the buff / debuff would have been way better here.
If you see me online, feel free to ping me a message and we can play

Haha in general or to something specific? It might not always look like it, but I take all the comments and suggestions on board. Whether I remember them in the heat of battle is another story 🤣
