As a Black woman, I have a problem that you can’t question the motives of Black people especially when they speak as if they represent us or their efforts are to help us as a collective. What we have found is that these women who did not want men to be a part of the movement and did not do anything to assist the families who lost their loved ones, did nothing to help them but too money to make their lives better. The exposure and the fact that they ran a con, they got out while they could get away with taking the money. So hopefully we can lay that movement to rest and they go away permanently.

I just want to tell a story to American leftists. I live in a small European country that suffered a lot with austerity measures after the crisis.
Our far left had 20% of votes in elections, and there was huge mobilization on the streets.
In the last years they started pivoting to identity issues and very divisive figures started to pop, atacking our history, statues, being white, and class issues disappeared.
Now the far right (that didn't existed here) had more votes than the far left parties together. I see no mobilization in the streets and corporations are happy.

Campbell deserves kudos for his thorough solid investigative piece on BLM Global's finances. It is certainly telling that NY Mag commissioned this piece on BLM Global a year or more after leftist independent media sounded the alarm and interviewed many organizers of local chapters who demanded financial transparency shortly after the George Floyd protest. I suspect that the timing is related to the Dem Party's hawkish stance on crime & the need for more resources for the police from the increased funding of capitol police, to the 9/11 esque handling of the 1/6 investigations. As ineffectual/co-opted as BLM Global is and as careerist as Garza and Cullors and their acolytes are, I suspect that the Dem Party and the liberal media allies like NY Mag see BLM, which still does a lot of critical posturing of police as a potential threat regarding their tough on crime & venerating police strategy. I hope Bad Faith will do more eps on BLM and co-opted activism and will interview a lot of the local activists on the ground who have had run ins w/ BLM global. Black Power Media has long blown the whistle on the Neoliberalization of BLM.

    • @scratchpenny
      @scratchpenny 2 роки тому +2

That's probably true. Unfortunately, I think the national narrative is dead regarding the phrase "Black Lives Matter." It's now associated with the Democrats/neoliberals and their machine. Anything significant accomplished under the umbrella of BLM can and will be controlled and spun by them for whatever their purposes. The cause is still valuable/essential, but the brand is done. Still, I would welcome your suggested additional reporting to ensure that this scheme and its players are entirely exposed. People need to understand that the establishment plays multiple games simultaneously. It's another example of how centralization of power and resources often leads to corruption.

@@andrewteague114 That's not the point. The point is the original intentions/goals have been hijacked by neoliberals for their agenda. Packaging everything into nice slogans/phrases like "supporting civil rights" is precisely how that's done because that statement is meaningless without specific goals. Notice how little change has happened legally or in government since these protests. Notice how coverage and talk about BLM were lessened significantly after the elections. That's intentional IMO, as these people never intended to make significant changes. Instead, they bought off the highest-ranking members and had corporations provide lip service and money without any significant policy changes. That's why the "brand" is damaged. The national BLM organization has become a massive joke as it was basically a giant grift at the expense of the real people who suffer from this criminal justice system.

CAA is a talent agency that helps with book deals and tv news appearances as well, it has some bad dynamics as most businesses do under capitalism but it’s not inherently corrupt or bad or akin to a corporate sponsorship to join it. It could be part of a very smart strategy to push politics in a good direction. The problem is BLM never had a meaningful set of beliefs and the leaders were opportunistic grifters. The phrase Black Lives Matter is basically meaningless and not at all odds with corporate America so they arguably didn’t even sell out, there was nothing to sell out. It was a main brainstorming issue in discussions on the level of T-shirt and bake sales just to try to get funds for photocopying fliers. It would be interesting to map public/private opinion on each of those agenda topics as the website info was pulled by BLMGN... I would guess that BLMGN public branding followed closely whatever would pull them the most institutional donations, and I could certainly see "what donors like" being the primary driver for their messaging.

To Sean's point, Black Lives Matter is three related but different things: an organization, a movement, and a slogan. Folks on both the right and left often conflate these three things, treating them like one in the same. The left does it when they criticize Sean and others from being against the movement when they are only casting skepticism on the organization. The right makes the same mistake the other way: they use bad behaviors of people using the BLM slogan or acting at a protest that is affiliated with BLM to cast aspersions on the entire movement.

Great show again. As a Marxist-Leninst who spent 10 years as a member of an ML organization in the 70's, and the #1 unpaid volunteer for the Bernie 2016 campaign in the State of Arizona, I would like for you BJG to consider these ML ideas on this subject. First, if we go back to the very basic ML definition of classes (i.e. Lumpen Proletariate, Peoletariate, Petite Bourgeois, Bourgiousie, Imperialist, etc.) the BLM matter becomes clearer. Kullers et al are upper Petite Bourgeious with career aspirations and good educations and individual skills that will keep them in the PB. In fact, many of the activists of all races and nationalities who have been active are from the PB. No judgement, just political evaluation. Though they would disagree, and so would others, their political position in this capitalist/imperialist system is objectively Black Capitalist Nationalism, and distinctly of the variety of race separartism (really, same as Farrakan without religion). In political positioning, they see the main enemy as whites (white supremacy of white people, not the system--successful Blacks in the 1% are heroes not enemies.) and not the White Supremacist Capitalist system. I have been told this by the many BLM and minority acivtists I have worked with, and they have said so much at their public events. It is ironic, I believe, that the system understands damn well that they are upper middle class (their definition of PB) with aspirations. In fact, buying off BLM is an old chapter in their playbook. Considering the power the slogan "BLM" had and has to unite the Black movement with masses of white people, they coud not let BLM succeed. The separatist Black National GNF leaders chose to ally with the corporations of the White Supremacist Capitalist Corporate system, and not the masses of white people who supported or were sympathtic to the anti-police movements. All these other details of their errant behavior, large or small, come from this class analysis if you examine them in the class context.

if you think BLM or the statement "black lives matter" ever had the power to unite whites and blacks against whatever system you're whining about then you're a fool and it's abundantly clear why you've accomplished nothing in 40+ years of political activism. stop reading theory and start paying attention to what's obvious in front of your eyes. live in the same world as the actual working class. (because your post suggests you live in a very different world)

@shogun7p7 Too true, but that is because of incredibly poor, sellout capitalist and class collaborationist leadership at BLMGNF. The movement itself was real and did have actual revolutionary potential.
Had Cullors, Garza and Tometi been actual Marxists who did the hard work of building BLMGN into an honest-to-god revolutionary political organization by committing the organization to real neighborhood-by-neighborhood organizing, installing democratic decision-making structures between the local chapters & the national organization, working to centralize around core demands and imbued their chapters with a regimented approach towards political education then 2022 would look far different than it does now precisely because of the potential 2020 presented.

Ideology is so important and Americans are primed to believe they don't hold any ideology, but everyone has their own set of ideals with varying degrees of conviction. The ideology is compromised of that which we hold sacred to our existence. Dogmatism is to be uncritical of one's own ideology. It's unfortunate the English language has been so twisted to fit narratives that words lose their meaning and people think Marxism-Lenninism is pure dogmatism. ML's in my experience have very strong analysis and arguments. Anyways thx for your thoughts.

In the case of TJ from the Huntington Beach White Lives Matter incident, I spoke with him personally in the lead up to the counter protest, as did many local organizers. The reason that people were hesitant to support his efforts wasn’t because of the BLM organizations denouncing the counter protest, although that did play a role towards the end . It was primarily because when he was asked about what he was doing to ensure the safety of folx that he was calling on to come out, he dismissed the concerns and said that the massive numbers would be enough to keep everyone safe. OC had already seen a counter protest gone wrong in Yorba Linda the year before, so people were understandably worried about a repeat in Huntington.

He also referred to anyone who offered to help organize the counter protest to ensure safety as “clout chasers.” Luckily, local organizers ultimately decided to show up, and the Nazis were scared off, but it was definitely a messy situation all around.

This Sean guy is on the ball. It's clear that he really cares and understands what oppression is about and is dedicated to calling out those who don't "respect" the reality of the "little people's" lives of black people. Just to include my 2 cents, we black people as a community really need to brush up on our history. We are losing the depth of feeling that we should have commensurate with our suffering compared to those surrounding us. Since this profound sense of loss is centrally what moves us, and defines us without supporting institutions which we control, the sooner we will be wiped out as a definitive group of people called "black" in the United States of America for whatever its worth. Look around and we can see the whitening of that which is black to white. We're fading to white if you will. And it ain't no joke. We are a unique group of people and we need to make clear that we all recognize what this means. I fear too many of us already don't recognize the true deal if you will, which will soon lead to the end of "us." Thank you.

I'm curious for opinions on a hypothetical. If it were the case that; over many years black women were selectively targeted by the state to annually endure 1/3+ of the extrajudicial murders by the state's own agents and in-group vigilantes and, if all the black female activists who initially stood up to speak out were mysteriously murdered, what would happen if then, a band of heterosexual black males arrived on the scene and somehow galvanized an already existing movement and popularized their struggle so well they were able to enroll the people and press to a rallying cry while also generating $90 million? What if, to go further, those men formed an organization that declared no women or LGBT could participate in leadership even though they were the ones being victimized by the system(s) the protest movement, which went global, sought to thwart? What if discoveries were made that the vast majority of funds raised couldn't be accounted for and millions that could, had been allocated to their friends, organizations run by and exclusively dedicated to the uplift of straight black men? What if most of the rest had been used to buy influence for themselves and multi-million dollar mansions across the nation and around the world? What if, in close to the final analysis, the group of men who pulled off this amazing feat of influence dipped out one by one leaving all the people who were supposed to be direct beneficiaries of the movement, their supporters and affiliates with zero financial support, legal aid or good will all the while dropping messages that they'd done everything correctly, had no regrets and were now being persecuted themselves for merely being questioned? Wouldn't if be curious if, after all that, professional journalists would be desperately seeking ways to find and bestow benefit of a doubt to the situation on behalf of those men about whom, it could be argued, no doubt of nefarious intent should exist? Would it cause an uproar if professional journalists even feigned delivering benefit of a doubt just to play devils advocate especially in a medial landscape like what exists now, where all nuance is suspect? Would the headline question "Did ... Leaders Cash In On the Movement?" be tolerated as legitimate? Wouldn't people be expecting the word 'HOW' to proceed "Did"? What do you think would be the national and international response to this scenario under these circumstances which, as described here, mirror what actually happened in this brane of the multiverse? Please share ...
