Eclectic in her appearance and sound. She was a huge club favorite. Friends with Bowie and Andy Warhol, she was always cutting edge. "Pull Up to the Bumper" is one of my favorites. Give it a listen 🎶
Grace Jones was just way outside the box. Her look, her voice, the unique way she presented herself, made her a mega personality that just about everyone knew during the height of her fame. I saw her in films, enjoyed her modeling pics, and owned one of her albums.
Pull up to the Bumper is a Grace Jones club banger. Two more classics are Slave to the Rythm and La Vie En Rose. She is definitely a captivating performance artist.
Absolutely love this woman, she is a definite cultural icon. Famously slapping British chat show host Russell Harty live on his show as she felt he was ignoring her. A real force to be reckoned with. Other great songs are 'Slave to the Rhythm', 'Pull up to the Bumper', 'Do or Die', 'Demolition Man'.
Love that movie! Really, I love both Conan movies from the 80's (never saw the third one from 2011). I hope they react to them both sometime this year. :)
@@greglegakis4177 "Slave to the Rhythm" was a top 5/top 10 song in many European countries. "Pull Up to the Bumper" didn't reach the top 10 outside the US.
@@Pulsar77Maybe so, but for what it's worth, "Pull" was a much better song. Definitely more catchy and more danceable. Nipple to the Bottle was also pretty big and IMO a better song as well. Slave has a cool video but I didn't think it was very catchy or very danceable.
Love Pull Up to the Bumper. But perhaps my favorite is her cover of The Normal’s Warm Leatherette. Saw her several times early on and midway through her career but not during her more recent years performing. She was a very close friend of a good friend of mine (a fashion Illustrator who died age 44 in ‘87 of AIDS😢). Grace Jones is 74 and still performing: seductive as ever!
The song that always pops into my head when I think of Grace Jones is "Pull Up to the Bumper" from 1981. She was always dressed in the most sculptural, dramatic clothes. In the eighties, it was often Issey Miyake and Azzedine Alaïa. She was one of the few people who could carry off Issey Miyake's most avant-garde outfits. And she was also known in the eighties for appearing with equally chiseled bodybuilder boyfriends, most famously actor Dolph Lundgren.
I met her at a party in NYC back in the late 80s for four minutes. She was awesome. Please, please, you haven't heard Grace Jones until you've heard her sing, 'La Vie En Rose'. AMAZING!!!
On your movie channel you can watch her in the James Bond film, 'A View to a Kill' her character is iconic! 🤩 (Duran Duran sing the unforgettable theme song in this one)
Grace was Jamaica's first International model. She frequented Studio 54 in New York and started singing there as a joke. It grew from there. Flippen BRILLIANT
Such an icon of the 80s! Many of her songs were staples in the dance clubs. “Pull Up to the Bumper“ (a massive dance hit), “Slave to the Rhythm “, “My Jamaican Guy” are a few of my favorites. Love her!
For me, one of her best performances was in the Eddie Murphy movie Boomerang. She was absolutely hilarious. 🐕🐈😂 I remember her as a model and a singer back in the 80s. Pull up to my bumper it was real popular. I love how she’s down to earth and very unique. Very cool!
I mostly remember her from Conan the Destroyer and that James Bond film she was in (I don't remember which it was) but she always stands out no matter what she's doing, she has a very unique style.
I first heard this song in a movie called Frantic starring Harrison Ford, which takes place in Paris. I had heard other Grace Jones songs before, but this was so well placed in the movie... there is no one like her. She is fluent in France... she lived there for years as a model. I was fortunate to meet her years ago... my husband and I were on cruise, and we had stopped in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and wandered onto a private beach during the few hours we had... the locals welcomed us, and then this woman came onto the beach with a few others... she was older, but stunning... she lived just behind in one of the homes.... one of the locals introduced us. We talked briefly... I did not want to disturb her or her friends, but she was quite gracious.
One of the first supermodels, lived in Paris, then went into music became a dance music icon, then graduated into the movies. She was a singular sensation. Try Pull Up to the Bumper (her biggest hit), Slave to the Rhythm, My Jamaican Guy, La Vie en Rose, Private Life, Breakdown, Love is a Drug, Warm Leatherette obviously I'm a fan!
Grace Jones is amazing and many of the comments talked about some of her best recordings and her status as an icon. Grace Jones played a warrior Queen in the movie Conan the Barbarian. In an interview, the star, Arnold Schwarzenegger said that Grace was really fighting and the director had to tell her to take it easy on the stuntmen. I was walking down 57th Street in Manhattan years ago and saw a traffic jam, caused simply by Grace Jones walking down the street. I recommend one of her later songs, Corporate Cannibal. I guarantee it is unlike anything you have seen! Please continue to explore the music and talent of Grace Jone! Great reaction!
Love Grace Jones! This song conjures up a parisienne vibe in Paris, -- smoky cafes, especially with the accordion (and you know I love me songs with accordions since I'm an accordionist myself!).
Rob, you nailed it. This is art. Lots of musicians. Few artists. ART is that extra-level genius very few know how to offer. (consider: I'm Not Perfect)
I saw her perform last summer. She's amazing. 74 and she was the best act of the day. What a woman 🔥🔥 search for Grace Jones Rotterdam to see her performance at 74
Incomparable. Un-coverable. Highly conceptual. Her oldest material is a bit odd because they didn’t know what to do with her voice. Her catalog is full of so many fun things to play. Start with her most recent and go backwards. Next videos could be Corporate Cannibal, Love You To Life, I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect For You.) Her appearance on Later With Jools Holland is a treat if you can find it.
It is impossible to capture what a revelation Grace Jones is. She revolutionized music in the 80's & 90's. She was Jamaican born and international in culture. This period of her albums Nightclubbing, Warm Leatherette, and Slave to the Rhythm were an especially creative period when she redefined cool, chic and modern, delivering the flat top fade hairstyle later widely mimiced by early hip hop stars. SHE had striking looks and out of this world fashion from the top couture designers. She sings a modernized version of a hit by Motown's Marvelettes -- The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game -- which loses cool and suave. Listen to the club version of Feel Up, a remix by DJ superstar Larry Levan. Or maybe her song about making love during a car crash, Warm Leatherette. Her dusky alto, delivered in dulcst monotones was reminiscent of European stars like Marlene Dietrich. She began her singing career in chiffon and tulle wearing an old 45 record on her head as a hat singing a disco tune so awful it became fabulous by going through the back door: I Need a Man; and a risque version of a French song 'La Vie en Rose'. Try these out Nipple to the Bottle, Slave to the Rhythm, My Jamaican Guy, and the fabulous Pull Up to the Bumper (Larry Levan Mix). Nightclubbing and Hunter Gets Captured by the Game. She still performs. You can catch her at Queen Elizabeth's 90th performing while using a hula hoop the entire time. GRACE JONES IS WHAT FABULOUS IS MADE OF!!!!!
Grace Has a much bigger following in Europe where she lives and she still goes on tours. She still has striking beauty even into her 70's. I saw he in person up close on two occasions back in the late 80's and early 90's. She has never had any cosmetic surgery done, but people who do, try but fail to achieve her looks.
Grace Jones! I would call it melancholy. Dark, sad, happy mixture. lol. She was very cool. New wave, punk rock, alternative, reggae influenced, international music.. Some disco. etc. Very versatile. Her songs and videos wre fun to check out when I was a kid, '80. Some of her good friends includes David Bowie, Iggy Pop, etc. So that explains it lol. She's Jamaican, very pretty lady too. Tall and thin. She's also a model and actress, Creative, strong voice, stylish. Avant garde, artsy pop, similar to Kate Bush. Very long career from the late '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s. "Slave To the Rhythm", "Demolition Man", "My Jamaican Guy", "Do or Die", "Amado Mio", ect next ones for yall to check out!
This song is based off a famous piece called "Libertango" by Astor Piazzolla. Before the pandemic, I was in a string quartet and went through a tango phase. I rearranged this piece for our group to perform and it was so much fun to watch everyone start dancing to it!
Grace is one of the greats! She has so many greats songs, some amazing grooves like Pull up to the bumper and I'm not perfect (But i'm perfect for you). Another amazing song is My Jamaican Guy, her own kind of reggae. One great sng after the other.
I adore Grace Jones!! She’s simply captivating in every sense of the word. She is a very international artist whose managed to crossover into many different medium forms. You mentioned singer, model, actress, etc. She’s just about done it all. One of my all time fave Grace Jones songs is actually a French remake of a song called “La Vie en Rose”. In my opinion, it really showcases her vocals in a beautiful and sultry way. Hope you check it out!!
Thank you so much for picking this recommendation.😊 Grace Jones is… Grace Jones. Unique, creative and a force of nature. Check out „Slave to the rhythm“, „Pull up to my bumper“, „Private Life“ and of course her beautiful version of „La vie en rose“.
I loved Grace Jones. Saw her live in Florida back in the late 80's and it was fantastic (and wild!). I've still got her CD's from back then. You will probably get suggestions for "Pull up to the bumper", "I'm not perfect (but I'm perfect for you)". I also like a couple of other cuts from that last album "Victor should have been a Jazz Musician", "Chan hitchhikes to Shanghai" and "Barefoot in Beverly Hills". Her music is definitely creative. Sometimes it's like she just is thinking about something from her week and puts it to music.
Grace did a brilliant cover version of The Pretenders Private Life. The legendary and highly influential Jamaican musicians and producers Sly and Robbie were responsible for her sound. If you type into UA-cam Grace Jones on Russel Harty you can see when Grace slapped the Yorkshire chat show host on his chat show, which first got her noticed in the UK.
I've always liked to describe Grace Jones as a force of nature. There is not one quite like her! She has an amazing voice, she is STUNNING to look at, she is a model, actress, singer, songwriter, fashion icon. I hope you'll continue to check out more of her music. Love Is The Drug, Warm Leatherette, Slave To The Rhythm, Victor Is A Jazz Musician, Walking In The Rain, Nightclubbing, I'm Not Perfect (but I'm perfect for you), Cooperate Cannibal, Williams' Blood, This Is, and so many more. She is a Bond girl, she was in the James Bond movie: A View To A Kill. She was also in Canan The Barbarian. One of my favorite movies she did was Boomerang with Eddie Murphy. She also did a very interesting movie called Vamp where she's a vampire.
Fantastic artist. I literally bumped into her at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. She was there filming a view to a kill. Was 1984. She apologised after bumping into me, but I didn’t recognise her, but a bit later they called her on the tannoy, and I realised it was Grace Jones.
I met Grace once. In 1987. All I can say is that nothing really prepares you. A unique individual. Her cover of Love is the Drug should be next I think.
I'm not perfect , A piece inspired by a meeting with Mick Jagger one day when they found themselves by chance in the same studio she had the idea when Mick Jagger and her were flirting together , Mick and Grace started to talk about a subject in particular that of couples formed by two celebrities. then discussed this obligation to be as perfect as a partner as an artist. only one sentence will emerge from this working session: “I’m not perfect, but I’m perfect for you”. The video is awesome made by her ex husband the photographer Jean Paul Goude, guest appearance in this video, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Niles rogers. La vie en rose is a remake from the famous french singer Edith Piaf.
Grace Jones burst on to the scene a Legend. She only when Up from there. She's an Icon of the 80's and still brings it when there's a show to be done. She's a Phenomenon go find something from her ''Night Clubbing'' album or her ''Warm Leatherette'' album Awesome Awesome Music.
She always looks in her videos as if she's about to bite your face off if you dare criticize her--but in interviews and concerts she's a very funny lady.
Grace Jones is living art! I just recently saw Grace perform here in Seattle. She's 73 and she brought the house down. We were all living! She sang Slave to the Rhythm while hula hooping throughout the entire performance. Many people throw the term"iconic" around and I don't always agree. However, it's just facts that if anybody truly was iconic, it's Grace Jones.
OMG! Finally! You must see the video for Corporate Cannibal. Demolition Man is also pretty wild. When she was still a bit more into her disco era, she also did a great cover of La Vie en Rose.
Warm Leatherette - Slave to the Rhythm - Walking in the Rain - Nightclubbing - I'm Not Perfect Born in Jamaica, she performed at the opening of Studio 54, starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Destroyer, was body-painted by Keith Haring to star as a vampire in Vamp, and appeared in the Christmas at Pee-Wee's Playhouse special. She is an icon.
Some disco, some soul, some 80s synth wave, some French chanson... and, of course, Grace Jones's mysterious appearance. As others have suggested, there are a few other nice hits of her (even though I love this one the best): Pull Up To The Bumper, Nipple To The Bottle, Slave To The Rhythm and a great cover of La Vie En Rose. She also was great in the Bond flick 'A View To A Kill' (1985, iirc).
Grace Jones was a force of nature, she was everywhere in the 80's, Bond Movie, model, music. Then just as suddenly she disappeared, I know she is still out there doing stuff but she went from the pinnacle of celebrity to "oh yeah I remember her" in no time.
This piece was scored and arranged by Astor Piazzola...the famous argentinian tango composer and achordeon virtuoso....in other countries this song title has been changed to "Libertango"
Also a showcase for bassist Robbie Shakespeare and drummer Sly Dunbar a.k.a Sly & Robbie, who were part of the studio group "The Nassau All Stars", who are backing this.
Grace Jones is an ICON! I’m pretty sure she was one of the first supermodels. She’s always been cutting edge and commanded attention everywhere she went. She was in one of the Conan the Barbarian movies. She was a badass warrior. This was a nice surprise for female Friday. Thanks y’all!
"Super Models" have been around since the early 1940s, and the word 'supermodel' has been around since the days of Capucine, Twiggy, Veruschka, etc. in the early '60s - so Grace came along to international modelling in the '70s and contributed to the Diva persona transitioning to singing and acting.
Also, her song "I'm Not Perfect( But I'm Perfect For You) from 1986 produced by Nile Rodgers has a similar groove and tempo to Duran Duran' s song "Notorious" also produced by Rodgers. The album "Inside Story" is where it comes from. Great release check it out!
Adding to her list of accomplishments she was also a "bond girl". She played Mayday in "A View to a Kill". She was not just a pretty face but tough as nails. So add action star to her list.
I saw her live at a giant festival in the Netherlands in 2009 or something. About 250 acts in 3 days, and hers is the one performance that I still remember and think about. I-CONIC. 70 years old at the time and hoola hooping her way though Slave To The Rhythm ❤️ Check out the cover art for her album Island Life. Oh my god, gorge
wow Grace Jones. I´ve seen her live, when she was already round 70, and did a great 2-hours-show with one ( very long) song using a hula-hoop during the whole song. man, i was very impressed. she´s a great musician and artist.
Queen Diva Artist, multi linguist revolutionary Grace Jones. Original and kept it real. Bold and beautiful. Pull up to the Bumper, My Jamaican Guy, Slave to the Rhythm, warmLeatherette, La Vie en rose. She was an artist that was always ahead of her time and smashing boundaries. Bravo
I have been a HUGE Grace Jones fan since the very early 80's! She is the embodiment of POWER! A sleek goddess who honestly has never given even the most remote shit! I still adore her crazy self! She's still performing too - topless half the time. Seriously. 😈💜😈
Legendary and iconic! Miss Grace Jones is truly one of a kind. Another iconic performance was her role as Strangé in Eddie Murphy’s Boomerang…hilarious!
Yes guys, Grace is really one of a kind, a very special character, especially in the 70’s to the new millennium. It got a bit quieter around her, she’s 74 at this point, but she still is a very unique woman. If you want to see her in action, you have to watch her in “A view to a kill“ Fromm the James Bond franchise. It’s from 1985 and the last one with Sir Roger Moore. It’s a franchise you should check out btw, although there are 25! movies at this point and this one is the 14th! If you want to check a character out just like Grace, listen to Skin from Skunk Anansie, she is also someone you never saw and heard before, a one of a kind black Rock chic!! Trust me, she will blow your mind! “Charlie Big Potato”, “Hedonism”, “Brazen (Weep) or “Twisted (Everyday hurts) are just 4 examples for Skunk Anansie, “Faithfulness” and “Trashed” just 2 from her solo.
Such an icon. She is very dramatic. Love her look, so unique at the time. She s another over achiever. Slave to the Rhythm, banger. Thanks guys for the smile.
You hit the nail on the head guys with your Talking Heads reference, Grace is definately in that genre and has many great weird songs..hope you check her out more.
I remember her from a lot of movies - Conan The Destroyer, Boomerang, A View to a Kill (yes, she was a Bond girl!), but I also remember her great cover of Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug".
Eclectic in her appearance and sound. She was a huge club favorite. Friends with Bowie and Andy Warhol, she was always cutting edge. "Pull Up to the Bumper" is one of my favorites. Give it a listen 🎶

Grace Jones is pure art from head to toe. Absolutely exquisite.

She scared me as well yet was beautiful at the same time 😊

Grace Jones was a genre all by herself. Absolutely stunning and a force to be reckoned with. Demolition Man should be your next song by her.
‘“A genre all by herself.” Yeah, that’s it exactly. Well said.
"Stunned"....everything Grace Jones has ever done left me feeling this way. Strange but cool. Always mysterious. One of a kind.

Slave To The Rhythm, Pull Up To The Bumper and La Vie En Rose are Grace Jones musts! ❤️😁
Her rendition of La Vie en Rose is very cool
I Love this....Also Love watching you two very much....God Bless..xx
6:10 the reaction on Amber's face is pure reaction to Grace Jones. She's just got more talent than we can understand.
"La Vie en Rose" (Long Version) and "Slave to the Rhythm". Masterpieces.
The Grace Jones movie "Vamp" is the coolest vampire cult film EVER!!!!
I love her. One of my favourite songs is Grace singing La vie en Rose, it makes me happy, must listen and watch her sing that 😀
Grace Jones most famous role was as the villain Mayday in view to a kill which is a James bond movie
I met Grace once. In 1987. All I can say is that nothing really prepares you. A unique individual. Her cover of Love is the Drug should be next I think.
Grace Jones was in the sequel to "Conan the Barbarian" as Zula an Amazonian warrior. She kicked ass! She had 6 studio albums by that time.
"I'm not perfect" and "la vie en Rose "songs from Grace Jones are pure joy to listen.
So far ahead of her time!! Love her!!
Grace Jones burst on to the scene a Legend. She only when Up from there. She's an Icon of the 80's and still brings it when there's a show to be done. She's a Phenomenon
go find something from her ''Night Clubbing'' album or her ''Warm Leatherette'' album Awesome Awesome Music.
When she was still a bit more into her disco era, she also did a great cover of La Vie en Rose.
thrilled to see you add grace jones to your world! strongly suggesting "pull up to the bumper" and "slave to the rhythm"
Warm Leatherette - Slave to the Rhythm - Walking in the Rain - Nightclubbing - I'm Not Perfect
Born in Jamaica, she performed at the opening of Studio 54, starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Destroyer, was body-painted by Keith Haring to star as a vampire in Vamp, and appeared in the Christmas at Pee-Wee's Playhouse special.
"Pull Up To My Bumper" was her hit. Grace Jones is... unique (to say the least).
Slave To The Rhythm is another banger from her.
She had quite a few hits
She had 11 Top 10 hits on the US Dance Chart
Grace Jones was a force of nature, she was everywhere in the 80's, Bond Movie, model, music. Then just as suddenly she disappeared, I know she is still out there doing stuff but she went from the pinnacle of celebrity to "oh yeah I remember her" in no time.
This piece was scored and arranged by Astor Piazzola...the famous argentinian tango composer and achordeon virtuoso....in other countries this song title has been changed to "Libertango"
I have had a MAD CRUSH on Grace Jones since I was a child! SO BEAUTIFUL and SO TALENTED!!!
Also a showcase for bassist Robbie Shakespeare and drummer Sly Dunbar a.k.a Sly & Robbie, who were part of the studio group "The Nassau All Stars", who are backing this.
This song was used as a theme in the Harrison Ford film, Frantic which took place in Paris.
Slave to the rhythm is a must 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Grace Jones is an ICON!
She was May Day in James Bond: "A View To A Kill." Formidable!
Grace Jones is UNIQUE. She is an absolute icon. She sings in Duran Duran's offshoot band Arcadia in a song called - "Election Day".
Grace has had some amazing tracks, Pull up to the bumper, Slave to the Rythm and Corporate Cannibal. All very worthy of a review may I add!
Grace is in a league of her own, a true artist.
She and Rocky’s Russian opponent Drago were an item. Both physical freaks. Stunning together.
The absolute definition of cool. So damn talented in so many ways, she still looks and sounds original as hell some 40 years later.
Grace is not just different, she’s Strangé. She is definitely an experience. Might want to hear her song “I’m Not Perfect” next.
Bravo
Now, where we cool in the 80's or what!? Yes, I dare challenge todays artist to be this cool! Love this woman!
I have been a HUGE Grace Jones fan since the very early 80's! She is the embodiment of POWER!
A sleek goddess who honestly has never given even the most remote shit!
I still adore her crazy self!
She's still performing too - topless half the time. Seriously. 😈💜😈
Pull up to the bumper was a classic by her, club hit!!
The accordion is reminiscent of a cafe in Paris in the 1940's. Maybe still, I have not been there in years.
Grace Jones played an evil vampire in the movie "The Hunger". She was unforgettable!
Very cool - I've never seen/heard this song of hers before. She's definitely one of a kind.
Grace Jones was a mega Icon of that era. For the best of 80's accordion, try a song by The The ~ "This is the day".
I was thinking the same thing. It would be an interesting reaction.
Grace Jones is a rabbit hole into originality, funk, reggae, disco, pop!
Amazing artist in every way. Great choice for female Friday!!
Thank you!
I remember her from a lot of movies - Conan The Destroyer, Boomerang, A View to a Kill (yes, she was a Bond girl!), but I also remember her great cover of Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug".
Grace Jones!!! The ultimate cool!!! 💋Picture it - Midnight in a Parisian basement bar
