Same goes for engaging the mower, but for the belt. Have the engine at an idle, your belt will last longer!
PTO clutch and spindle bearings will also have a lot less stress on them.
Also guilty and thanks for advice.
especially the electric PTO clutch. those can go bad from the shock of engaging or disengaging the deck.
That’s what I thought but didn’t hold true on my. Ltx 1050 Cub going through belts till read Manuel or send a video saying to give her all she’s got before engaging pro. ???
My Bad Boy zero turn says to have engine at full throttle.
Here's a challenge for all you fans of Steve and his content:
I'm not ringing a bell for myself, but I just sent him a $fiver out of gratitude for the time and headaches he has saved me, and the headaches I get to avoid in the future.
If you have benefited from his content at all, show your gratitude with a monetary gift. If hundreds or thousands of viewers were to throw just a few bucks each towards his efforts, he gets to stay on the job, and maybe he'll be just that much more motivated to keep creating.
Thanks for sharing your craft, Mr. Steve. Please don't use my donated funds to buy beer.
I used old car brake pads on mine and it works amazing. I restored my 1990 Dynamark with the 39 inch deck, Mine are rivited on. I drilled out the old ones and used them as a template and the drilled new hole through the car brake pads and the riveted them back on. I works absolutely flawlessly. Its been working like this for 3 seasons now and still going strong
great idea but all my cars the old brake pads are worn down thru half the backing plate :)
Just watched your 10 nastiest comments video. They must just be jealous. Keep up the good work Steve. You are so loveable.
Thank You...
I've a bad back and was rebuilding the deck on my old cub cadet. I brought over some sawhorses to elevate things to make it more comfortable for me. New spindles, pulleys, belt, and blades. I got done and went to put the deck back on the ground and as I pulled it off the sawhorses I hamy left hand gripping around the bottom of the deck . When I pulled it towards me the blade spun around and caught my pinky on my left hand severing the nail at the nail bed. I cleaned it up real good and bandaged myself up. The nail came off in the following weeks. Probably shoulda got a stitch or two. Stuff can happen quick and very unexpectedly.
If the blade brake is so worn totally out that metal rather than brake pad touches the blade pully there will be sparks thrown out because of metal against metal. This could easily start a fire in dry weeds or dry grass.
Oooooh, Ouch... Guilty as Charged. Have another brew or two on me. Thanks again as always, Steve!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Wow! I had absolutley no idea. Blade Brakes, a concept that has totally eluded my awareness, until now! TY Steve! Your stuff always makes good sense.
You're Welcome...
Steve, you didn't tell us what you were gonna drink!
Been doing that since I bought my mower in 2003. Brakes still in good condition.
Thanks for the update.
Awesome!
Wow .. good tip , thank you 👏👏👏
... and No Blue this time 😂😂
At golf course with E clutch PTO on all equipment we were taught to idle before disengaging blades. Also we'd run engine at mid level before engaging. Obviously there's times you quickly need to act but generally you shouldn't be in a rush operating equipment
Great information.
Glad you think so!
STEVE WHATS HAPPENING HAVEN'T HEARD FROM YOU FOR A LONG TIME. From Melbourne AUSTRALIA 👍🤠
Hey Steve You and your wife need to do your 20 questions and answers again!
Well Steve, "this is another fine tip you've gotten me into "
Thanks again, makes good common sense.
You're Welcome...
Steve, I wouldn’t doubt it that you’re going to get 75% longer pad life by letting the engine come ALL the way down to a V E R Y slow idle BEFORE you disengage the blades.😊
Right on
Do a video of a cheap/junk lawnmower . One with regular gas and one with ethanol free after they sat for a 6 months or a year. No additives
We use our Kubota to cut our own, plus 5 other lawns. We're back in the woods a bit and there's an impossible amount of sticks and debris on the ground. About every other week, I'm pulling the deck off the machine because of thrown or destroyed belts. That entire brake system was so aggravating to deal with whenever I removed the deck, I got completely fed up. I removed the whole thing!! No more brake system to deal with. When you idle down the engine and disengage the blades, they still stop before you even get off the machine. 😁
I cannot believe I didn't know this! I'm 65, kinda hands on born out of necessity. I never made big money and have learned to do many things myself. I really appreciate this.
Thank You...
Thank you for this information. I didn't even know I had these. Thank you.
Happy to help!
Great Tip - Never Knew This !
Thank You...
Hi Steve, you have given me a lot of great tips with fixing my equipment but I’ve run across an issue which to my knowledge I do not think you have covered. I have a craftsman 25 cc weed wacker with new spark plugs and carburetor. It starts fine, but as soon as I let it idle it shuts down and stops working. Wondering if you have any insights, thanks again
Great video as always Steve. Simple things to save money series coming soon to Steve's Small Engine Saloon. 30 Tips in 30 Days !!!
Great advice Steve.
Thank You...
Different design on my simplicity older broadmoor. Brakes are in the clutch. Under the engine
9/20/23:
Following the Amazon link below for the pad replacements, it's a 2-pack kit, which includes the lever, a spring, and disk/bushings, all in one package. About $25 before taxes.
Hi Steve thank you for everything and showning us to repair,Can you please show us how to change broken rope on lawn mower, or sthill chain saw pulling rope
Many videos in my playlists...
Hi Steve - I'm one of those people that can tear down stuff, but very incompetent when it comes time to put things back together. For this reason I have always hated fixing stuff. After watching many of your videos I had the courage to replace the blade belt on my Poulan Pro 500EX PB22H46YT LAWN TRACTOR. Guess what, my fear materialized. Although the belt itself took me about an hour to finish up, I did something really dumb. I messed with the Brake Arm assembly, I believe it is the RH. Spring Torsion Brake 532198410. I spent the whole day trying to put this thing back and I just couldn't. Worst yet, I could not find any tutorial video on putting this Spring and the Arm together. Do you have any video on the tricks and tips on how to install this particular Spring? Thank you for your time.
Steve, is there a chance you would do a video on battery-operated mowers in the near future it's inevitable, and I believe you would be the one to explain it correctly and in layman's terms love your videos
Great idea!
Great tip. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Great tip Steve thanks 👍
That thought had just never occurred to me. I do like squeezing a nickel until it turns into a dime, so this is much appreciated. Thank you!
You're Welcome...
Thank you for the tip any way to save a cup of dollars Is good Thank you for the video

Yea Steve that’s all fine and dandy till your beer cans empty and you have to wait those extra few seconds for it to slow down. Are you working for the “anti beer drinking brigade “? Just kidding. I learned my lesson on this the hard way. Thanks brother
Right on
Thanks for the tip Steve.

You can JB Weld some brake pad on

Thanks Steve! I appreciate this advice. Now...I'm off to get some beer.
Rock on!
Hi Steve. I just purchased a used LT150, and sure enough one of the blade brakes has no pad at all. The other one seems OK. I'll order a new one and install it. Thanks for the great video and tip about reducing the engine speed to extend the life of the brake pads. Best wishes.
You're Welcome...
Excellent tip

THANK YOU 🙏
Any time!
Thanks cheers Steve.
You're Welcome...
You got that right Steve slowing down the blade speed down then disengage the The blades I have to do that for my poluan XT mower and the John Deere lt mower thank you for suggesting that idea to do that for saving the brakes on your riding mower
Great advice and i alway`s lower my engine speed to idle before disengaging blades. Thank you for sharing.
Right on
That explains a lot! I disengage and I hear a whirlwind sound obviously now I’m guessing after about thirteen years of this they are down to the metal! Good to know though! I am guessing I better buy me some pads!
Right on
Do these pads also help when starting mower to keep the deck pulleys from moving which causes drag on the motor which can cause a ruff start?Having issues with belt grab
It might seem like a small point to make, but it can save you some trouble and aggravation as the seasons pass. Thanks Steve!! The Voice of Experience
Very true!
Excellent video. I just got a new deck for my John Deere D100 at the end of the season last year. I will be doing this from now on. Thank you very much.
Right on
Not sure if you've brought it up before in another video, but another good point on the opposite side of this is to have the throttle at idle when you engage the blades. Saves on belt wear for same reason.
@@AlpineWarren What pump? Unless you're running a hydraulic PTO I don't understand what you mean. And barely any residential lawn tractors have that.
?Warren?
British Westwood/Countax machines use "V" shaped brake pads, matching the shape of the inner surface of the pulley. Greater contact area, less wear.
Due to my hydraulic systems my mfg recommends keeping throttle at full when PTO or Drive is engaged. (Cub XT3) Would you mind discussing this?
Great tip...as all of your videos. Found your site since I just gotta new s100 JD. I ran it for first mowing last week. Leveled the deck as you showed. Cut grass nicely, but felt like there was excess vibration for the deck. Checked blades and belts , all ok...since brand new. Sharp and no bends. Same with belt and pulleys. First time with a rider mower & JD. Thoughts anyone?? Thx
Awesome 🇺🇲
Thank you! Cheers!
I've been meaning to replace my brake pads. I parked Martha, my Deere, a half hour ago and the blades are still winding down. I'll follow your advice in future, Steve! Thanks!! 👍
lol
I honestly never thought that brake pads is something that you might have to use not only on your car but garden mower as well
👍👍👍.Thank you
Welcome 👍
Great tip😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊I will do that on my tractor
Right on
Steve, what is a good riding mower that is dependable for residential use? ( Not too expensive) I need to get one soon. Thanks.
Thanks, Steve, no riding mower in my garage, but storing it in the bank of good stuff. Never know when my next door neighbor will be stopping over with questions (as is my limited knowledge seems to exceed the local level)! Cheers! Dave J
You're Welcome...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Best wishes my friends!
I had the issue of that same blade brake with no brake pad left on my Craftsman tractor mower. The pully ate grooves in it to metal. I bought both, locked the other pulled back out of the way after removing the rod, and both were out of stock. I've been waiting on them for moths with months left to wait. I pulled both to prevent damage, so using the throttle to slow the blades is brilliant! And that will help my new brake pad assemblies last longer. Thanks, Steve!
It would be great if there was a way to replace the brake pads without having to buy the whole assembly. The arms are still good. They just need new pads. Any thoughts on accomplishing that? If you figure it out or know of or find of a way, please make a video on it. And a video on installing and properly adjusting new ones would be great. I know you said it shouldn't be necessary, but I had to remove the rod for the brake pad arm on the side without the lever spring to lock it open after removing that brake pad arm, so I need to adjust both again. Thanks
I have the brake pads that are on with rivets and I haven’t a rivet tool. How can I put the pads on without a special tool?
Hi Steve my son has purchased a Toro zero turn mower unfortunately the belt keeps falling off the pulley.please help
I have a John Deere LX188 that I bought with no deck fitted, I have since fitted a deck to it but the engine cuts out every time I engage the pot switch, initially I found that the plug for the pto was disconnected but it did the same with the pto plug connected, I wondered if it could be connected to a seat switch? The engine starts regardless of if I am sitting on the seat?
Steve how can I get my small engine running if there is no connections to the carburetor??
Hi Steve I hove a john deere D110, I have a problem. My blades slowly spin without them being engaged. Replaced tge blade brakes, would you know of any other issue that would cause this?
Hey Steve your videos have helped me a lot with fixing small engines and I appreciate all you do for your subscribers. However, I ran into a lawnmower problem you haven’t addressed yet and I think a lot of people come across this same problem. I picked up an auto choke lawnmower that wouldn’t start and after cleaning the carb and performing a tuneup it started first pull. The problem was it would not start after the engine was warm. I thought the spark plug or ignition coil was bad and I replaced both, but I still had the same problem. Finally I figured out that the thermostat on the lawnmower was faulty and causing the mower to not start after getting hot. I think a lot of people have this problem and you should make a video about it. Cheers my friend
Do all JD’s have these blade brakes?
HI GOT A 12 YR OLD 2.2KW 5HRS POWER GEN AT THE BACK OF THE ARMATURE IS A DIODE ,MINE IS BROKEN LOST THE SAMPLE HELP PL IS IT A DIODE ,PURPOSE? AND SPEC THANKS
My Gravely commercial zero turn mower that I bought new in Florida said that setting the throttle at 3/4 then hit the button for the PTO. Now live in Missouri and this dealer says to turn PTO on at full throttle. The new mowers don't have the adjustable belts they have constant pressure. I think this dealer is wrong or they want me to spend more on belt's. Any thoughts
I have a JD L120 can you make a video on how to level the deck properly? My front is lower than the rear.
Check tire pressure first, then play with rods to adjust
My 2012 Husq tractor has an electric/spring pto clutch/brake.
With pto switched off, the spring applies the brake.
With pto switched on, the magnet overcomes the spring, releasing the brake while engaging the clutch.
It's brilliant, really.
Yet, even though it operates differently, everything else you've said in this video still applies. Best practice is to idle down when engaging/disengaging the pto for all the same reasons but on different components.
